Hello everyone,
I am just a bit confused on what version of Galaxy Nexus receives the direct google updates. Which version should I look for?
Thanks!

You should have the Yakju build in order to get the OTA's from Google.
Yakju.
Check with this app if you're lazy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate
Slow updates from Google
Then it seems that Google is very slow to push out newer updates since 4.0.4 exists and talk about 4.0.5 has already started.
My Galaxy Nexus is on 4.0.2 and is set to get updates direct from Google, it kinda defeats one of the main points of getting a Nexus device that being getting updates faster than non nexus devices regardless of carrier.
I'd prefer to keep my device stock for the time being, thoughts?
Would you prefer the alternative of updates that break more than they fix?
If you think people complain now, imagine how much they would if that happened.
4.0.4 exists AS A TEST.

How about that hundreds of Canadians took to the web reporting that immedately after 4.0.2 was released their market app started crashing. The fact that NFC options disappeared from settings at the same time. The crash reports posted here and elsewhere. The seven page thread here on xda. The news reports on various sites. The bug report on code.google.com. The fact that the update was pulled just 48 hours after rollout and hasn't been re-released. All that silly evidence confirms the 'rumour'.

No one knows who does the coding, testing, or certification procedures for either the yakju or non-yakjuux builds. Somewhere between Google and Samsung.
Google handles Yakju. They said it themselves. However yes, they are being quite elusive about the variants.

Thanks. It's interesting they publicised 4.0.2 instead of 4.0.3. So much for the Galaxy Nexus being the first to get updates...(Not that it really matters, only a small update )

Everything is "nexus." They simply just spread the love around, that's all.
Wish they could do that for the Nexus One I envy the Nexus S. Will the non-yakju get the OTA updates from Google? Haven't been able to catch up to the yakju vs. non-yakju debate.

Non-yakju will get the update but I believe its maintained by Samsung so you'll have to wait for them to push it. It takes a couple of minutes to switch to a yakju build. Or you can flash a deodexed 4.0.3 ROM when that gets released sometime this weekend as 4.0.3 has been dropped into AOSP.
Sadly, the Nexus One wasn't able to go through this process due to hardware limitations.
That we would get OS updates rolled out pretty much as soon as they are released. So why are we waiting for an "official" release for 4.0.3 to make it's way to the Verizon LTE device?
Verizon is probably testing it to make sure it's reliable and fixes the signal hand off.
There are reportedly problems with the 4.3 update that's been going out else where. They have temporarily suspended it. Also, there is an additional update for the LTE version (assuming that's the one you have), so it may be delayed.
Patience. Not all the galaxy S's are updated simultaneously, there still needs to be approval from the carrier, even though it's a google phone.

I don't think 4.0.3 has even rolled out for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, let alone the LTE one. It's rolling out to the Nexus S right now, so I'm sure the Galaxy Nexus will get it by the end of the month, or early January (it is the holidays you know).
i must admit i found it a little odd that even the GSM GN is only on 4.0.2 and the same day basically the nexus S was updated to 4.0.3, seems maybe something was wrong with the 4.0.3 update making it take a little longer for the GN
i expected:
-no fragmentation
-insta-updates
-google products to work
i dislike that there are multiple builds out; that google only promotes the verizon copy; that it is manufacturer and phone provider-branded; that google's own WALLET app is not officially supported (atleast on GSM)
its beginning to seem less and less "google-like"

Updates are region specific as basebands vary by region based on what frequency bands are used. Only 1 nexus device supports Google Wallet. The NS4G. The original NS doesn't even support wallet officially. Your complains are kind of invalid.
4.0.3 has battery drain issues and supposedly Google pulled that ota. Also the ns4g hasn't even got the ics ota yet...
I guess you can call it fragmentation but devs always compile the latest roms anyways. Iono it'd not a big deal for me lol

please bear in mind, regardless, you will always be the first to get the latest update from google.
question is, people seems to be able to wait for days, not weeks, where as we all know, it does takes weeks for google to release a update.
but in comparison to other manufacturer, we are talking about months in oppose to weeks.

As said already. You are taing about days or weeks. Where as all other phones you are talking a few months.

According to Samsung Sweden it is google pushing out the updates BUT samsung has to review the updates and do quality control for local carriers first so I guess it depends on what the nature of the update is if it's going to be delayed or not.
We have yakjuxw here aswell.
This comes from their facebook page though and they have been saying all kinds of crap there before so not sure if it's like that or not but it sounds like they had researched it better this time so it can be correct.
Guys.. it really doesn't matter what your device is you are going to get updates no matter what..
Not everyone gets updates at the same time no matter what so there isn't a point in worrying about it..
I wouldn't even bother listening to a company's twitter feed. They usually don't know the details (or anything for that matter...)

Precisely. Considering there are staggered rollouts for OTAs anyways, there's a good chance you'll get your update to your "Samsung" phone before "Google" phones lol. It really doesn't matter. Nexus is a Nexus.

This. All updates are pushed by Google, whether you are running yakju, or a localized build. However, as Snoemannen said, the first non-yakju OTA's will generally tend to come out later than the first yakju OTA's, as Samsung reviews them. This is not to say that if you have a yakju build, you will get your OTA before a non-yakju build - only saying that the first yakju update will come before the first non-yakju update. Now, as long as that first person grabs the update URL, then we all should have updates quickly!
It's time to stop yakking about all these different builds and be happy that Google will get you all the updates.

Just read this. Looks like 4.0.5 may be out in a month or so. Wonder if 4.0.4 was just a test build maybe? Doesnt make sense that 4.0.5 will be coming out so soon after 4.0.5 was leaked.

If this 4.0.5 update is real, I really hope Google has time to update the Android repos this time. Seriously.
It's embarrassing seeing Google promote the Nexus as the open phone and then release binary updates with no source attached, like it did with 4.0.4.

Exactly. It was a leak.
Couple things here.
SFR is the only company reporting it and has been before 4.0.4 was discovered.
Anyone find it funny a carrier announcing a software version for a carrier unlocked device?
Its not impossible as this is a Nexus device. It is unlikely though. Maybe its a typo? 4.0.3 was labeled as 4.1 on the repos at one point on accident. It shows in the commits.

Yes, I do not see why a carrier would claim to be rolling out a developer device ota, my bet is that it is listed by accident as its not their job to update, still think it may hint to 4.0.5 though, misadvertised or not

I've never read that.
4.0.3 was the official platform release
it was the release for the galaxy S
Everyone assumed it would come to the gnex because why wouldn't it but obviously google wanted to fix a slew of issues first.
To be honest I couldn't care less what version gets released as long as the bugs get sorted out ASAP. Browser stability is a big drawback for me, especially on flash rich sites. Countless random reboots and other annoying bugs along with general "smoothness" of the OS is needed.
By the way I'm on unrooted stock 4.0.2 GSM GN.

Google classified 4.0.3 for Nexus S. Check the page.
Don't ever expect anything from French providers, they are way too slow and inefficient. (except Free which is a brand new company)
0.0.1 updates are typically device and location specific update.
According to who?
Last I checked, 4.0.4 included fixes needed for the entire platform, not just a specific carrier.

If they say they will release 4.0.5, given the fact that they modify the system, it means that they will / they already have the official 4.0.5. Which means we might get it before they release their modified version.

What are you talking about ?
Repos have been updated, source is available online for quite sometime, even gerrit is up again. People want the latest? Build from aosp master branch.
Are you saying that you want to download 7+ gb of source code with a OTA or a "leaked" update?
Or are you talking about getting source code of proprietary stuff, like gpu, camera, sensors, GPS? That won't happen, at least by what JBQ told us @android-building. It isn't nor will it be possible to build a update package for the nexus all from source code. And Google is still undergoing to get all the other binaries from hardware suppliers, since we only have two officially available of the five or six needed.

Still waiting, has anyone received it on yakjuux recently?
Also waiting for an update...
I got my galaxy nexus when it was released in Canada and since then have been waiting for the updates. This will not happen with this variant of the OS. I called Bell who told me to call Samsung who told me that I just needed to be patient and wait for Google to update my OS. I then did more research online and discovered that this yakjuux version is not updated by Google at all. Never will be.
My question is, who does that yakjuux version come from? Is there any accountability for them to update it? My phone is not currently rooted, or flashed in anyway, although I am considering it even more after reading the forms here.
Thanks

It is not clear who updates the non-yakju builds. All the updates are pushed from Google's servers though. What I'm guessing likely happens is that Google updates the yakju builds, then Samsung makes some localization changes (for specific regions) to the yakju build, gives the modified builds back to Google, who pushes them out.

I sense your frustration, but if you're implying that yakjuux won't ever get an update I think there is an extremely low risk of that happening. The yakjuux update went a big wonky last month Google/Samsung stopped pushing it out. It was probably so close to the completion point of 4.0.4 that they just figured on skipping it. Yakju is the template used to make the customized builds, so it stands to reason that that build would have to be finished for 4.0.4 yakjuux could be released.
That's probably not helpful if you've been eagerly awaiting 4.0.2 and now have to watch people that had it months ago get bumped up even further, but that in no way signals that Canadian users have been abandoned on 4.0.1. If you really can't wait there's lots of detailed guides here that will get you up to date in no time.
Just a quick question for those of you that are still on yakjuux: what is keeping you there?
There is no difference whatsoever from a user experience perspective. I'm speaking from personal experience, as I bought my device from Virgin Mobile, and left it on yakjuux for quite some time. Then I decided to flash yakju. Lo and behold, there was absolutely no difference. No difference in performance, no difference in features, no difference in reception, no difference whatsoever.
So, I'm just curious as to why those of you still there have not switched, given that the only difference that I have seen so far in the almost 5 months I've owned this device, is that yakju gets updates much sooner than the non-yakju builds. It's not like it's a complicated process. In fact it's extremely easy.
Sorry deleted.

Sure, yakjuux 4.0.1 works great. You are missing USB host support and the ability to use Google Wallet, but if you don't need those, then there is really no point in upgrading anyway, as I doubt you will notice a difference. Let's not forget that we are talking about a 0.03 incremental upgrade.

On the contrary, the advantage (and a main selling point for me) of a Nexus device is its unlockable bootloader. Which devices, other than the Android showcase devices (i.e., Nexus One, Nexus S, Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Nexus) do you see that come with unlockable bootloaders out of the box? None (although Sony-Ericsson and HTC are providing on-line unlocking for some of their devices now). The beauty of a Nexus device is that it is almost un-brickable, factory images and source are readily available -- all of this allows you to try whatever you want, and always be able to return back to the way it was when you bought it without issue.
Not to mention that Nexus devices are guaranteed to receive at least one major upgrade to the next version of Android (from when it was release), e.g., N1 launched on eclair got upgraded to froyo and then GB, NS launched on GB and got upgraded to ICS, Xoom launched on HC and got upgraded to ICS, and finally the GN launched on ICS, and will get updated to JB.
