Whats the need to root? - HTC One X

Honestly i dont think ill root this phone for a long time. There seems nothing wrong with it
Sent From My HTC sensation (desire with rcmix s )

You don't root because there is a problem. Awesome apps is the reason.

Like 70% of the most awesome things on android need root access
Things like Sixaxis Controller for example

More examples would be good... I'm not 100% sure why on a stock device I would need root?
Looking at my Xoom which I have a custom ROM and Root on. There are only 4 apps with root privileges
CIFSManager - Allows me to connect to network storage, not 100% sure I would need / want this on my phone.
Mizuu - Movies Database which works with out root there is just one small feature that if you want to use requires root.
Root Explorer - File manager that again works with out root, root is only needed if you want to access system areas.
SetCPU - For overclocking and if your just running stock then I guess you wont be wanting to overclock.
PS: 131 apps / 4 require root = 3% (if 70% of the most awesome things on android need root then I'm missing a lot please help me!)

I didn't say 70% of the apps need root access I just said that 70% of the really cool stuff needs root Stuff you can't do with an iPhone

Titanium Backup anyone? I'' backup my HTC Sensation (well all the user apps) and restore them on the One X. AdAway is another reason.
Other than that I don't really need it for daily use.

This was a question raised on the CyanogenMod G+ page. The reality is that most people don't need ROOT. Some people shouldn't have ROOT.

Without Root you can't flash a Custom recovery (easily) and without a Recovery you can't flash good patches/themes or Custom ROM's.

Well you can root and have awesome apps but you don't need to install ROMs if you don't want to. But apps like titanium backup or root explorer are definitely worth it.

you remove bad apps that waste battery with root.

It depeneds up on the users. Root access can really brick the device if the user doesn't have enough knowledge about android. Xperia Arc stock firmware has lot of junk apps I need Titanium backup to remove them.
P.S. Most of my favorite apps need Root access. Root Explorer, Titanium backup, Voltage Control, Script Manager Pro etc.

Its going to be nice to have cm9 without having to root though. I hope more devs follow.

A must have app for me such as Titanium Backup need root to proceed...Root is more convenient for me~

I can't live without root, Titanium backup is a god send as I flash left right and centre, root explorer to debloat, AdAway as I hate ads when browsing the net, Voltage control as I like testing governors and such, Autostarts so I can stop apps from loading after boot, little things like that make root vital for me.

I just hope S-Off coming with one X asap..I really need root but dun wanna do unlock from htc bootloader...

The main reason i want root is to remove the adds in angry birds

If the above apps don't add any significant benefit for you personally (and you're happy to live without them), then there's nothing wrong with staying on the stock ROM. Still, here's a short list of things that I like about root:
- OpenVPN
- Root File Explorers
- Backup tools like Titanium
- Ability to remove stock apps
- CPU over/underclocking & voltage control
- Undelete/ file recovery tools
- More advanced screenshot/screencasting tools
- Add blockers
- Voice call recording apps
- Mods to improve stock apps (eg. camera features)
- LCD Density tools
- Custom ROM's and the new features they bring to unsupported devices.
There are many others, but I think the turning point for most people is when they have a specific need for something that can't be achieved without root. If you don't have such a need, why risk bricking your phone?
Good luck with your decision
Bugsy.

Most people come to xda for cool stuff. Most of these cool stuff requires root for example, titanium backup, cpustats, supersu, busybox and also for some "ahem" apps Rooting adds the admin function or rather extends the usefulness of your device

I wont be updating till the phine becomes outdated
Rooted my desire after a month
This phone will probaly last longer.
Or unless there us an amazing rom
Or maybe to underclock the phone

I rooted my desire and ended up really missing a few of the Sense apps (like the dialer). I do love trying out the different roms though, and just tinkering with my phone

UnrEVOked "root"

First thing first. Let me explain that I'm pretty much an Android novice. I have had the Moment for a few months and never modded it and just recently got the EVO and as of yet have not modded it.
I don't think I have the balls to attempt the "FULL ROOT" but I think I'm willing to try this UnrEVOked method. It seems super simple to install and uninstall. My question to you guys is this: Using this UnrEVOked root what exactly am I getting that I'm not getting from a fresh out of the box stock EVO 4G?
From my limited understanding the only things you can really do is overclock the phone (is this even safe? If so what is the best program and what are the ideal settings?) and also enable tethering (once again, what program would you use?)
Anyone that has UnrEVOked installed on their EVO please give me some insight about this and whether or not you recommend others to try it.
Many thanks in advance!
From what Ive gathered trough complains and other post. It's a temp root. removing apps return after a reboot, no writing to system etc. Pretty useless *from what it seems* SO just take the plunge and do the toast method as it is also needed to run the latest Roms if you intend to do such. Hope that was semi-helpful.
It allows me to run wireless tether and full titanium backup, which is all i wanted to do anyway.
I feel the same way.. unrevoked gave me wifi tether, system panel and Titanium. I may take the plunge when there's a full blown 2.2 rom. Until then, this is all I need.
That overclock app is really an underclock to save battery when in standby. Not sure it even works.
My battery is hanging just fine now that I've made the few tweaks and don't stay on it all day.

UnrEVOked is very simple which was it's purpose.
However it's not REAL root access. Real root gives you ability to flash custom roms that have MANY more features and tweaks that Sprint/HTC can't afford to invest the time/man hours/money in.
With Custom ROMS you get better battery life, more freedom and options to customize what Sprint/HTC shove down our throats.
IF you search the market for the word ROOT. You'll see what you're missing. Most of those apps won't work properly if you don't have real root access.
What is "real root?" having NAND access to flash a custom recovery image and being able to do away with ADB access from your computer and the ability to write to the /system folder.
Imagine being able to delete all that Sprint crap that is taking up space that no one uses. Not even you.
Your choice. It's all worth it. 79,000+ views for Damages ROM can't be wrong.

Where can I get wifi tether once I d/l Unrevoked? Also, what is system panel and Titanium?
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I installed 2.0.2 version.
Titanium is a system backup tool.
And system panel is a neat little app that let's you look at your performance. I downloaded it when I did the overclock tool - which is still installed.. but it's debatable on if it's really do anything. So not sure if I can recommend it. But you can try it if you're having battery issues still. I did too many things at once and can't tell what really helped.
Thanks for the help swebby. I'm going to try those programs u recommended.
Do you know if its true that you can get paid apps for free once you install unrEVOked?
Some kid posted a video on utube stating u can d/l free paid apps on 4shared.com. Any truth to this to ur knowledge
I don't know about that site.. and like I said. I'm new to this too. But I think in theory, you can install any .apk file you want, if someone shares it with you. I've pulled several apps like that so far.
But there could be a licensing issue I just don't know about yet. Like some app might require a license file tied to hdw or something. I really don't know.
But, if you can get an apk file, you should be able to in theory install it from your sd card.
In truth tho, most of these apps are only one or two dollars.. and the developers deserve some compensation for their work. So it's one thing to install one to try out.. but if you like it, you should pay for it, donate, etc.

Stock Roms for EVO

I rooted using toasts method. Tried a bunch of ROMs and don't really like any of them. What is the closest to STOCK Rom out there? I like the HTC sense and stock EVO but want to maintain root for wifi tether. Any recomendations on a close to stock Rom greatly appreciated!
you can use the stock supersonic roms to keep root and maintain the stock experience. do a quick search at the top of this forum for the guides and roms sticky.

prob best for the q&a thread.
im biased but i think my ROM, which i designed for exactly this intent is the best stock ROM. of course, thats my opinion. it loads the stock kernel and a completely stock system, with root that properly works with wifi tether and small developer tools like busybox, flash_image, and a shortcut remount script.
it loads all the stock apps, everything stock!

Just reroot via this method and you will 100% stock rom with root access and nand unlocked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
I really like the stock experience as well, and this allows me to maintain that + add things like the FPS fix (godsend), & setcpu.
Enjoy.
Thanks FluShot! That is exactly what I wanted. One question though.... can I format the SD card now without loosing root? I have a bunch of junk on there from all the "messing" around.
Try omj eclair rom
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I think Caulkin posted an entirely stock rom, it has nothing but root added.
However I think OMJ or JoeyKrim is an even better idea, the only changes they have made are adding in some tools you may eventually need, which won't be in the way. BusyBox for example gives you tools for backing up, adding, and removing data and apps, but it doesn't even add an icon to your drawer, it is just available when needed from the terminal (and is probably less than 100k, but I don't know).

I used this method and lost all capabilities of syncing my facebook contacts and pictures. a few of us have had that problems but no one seems to have the answer. =/
I used Facebook sync from the market to get all my contact pictures imported. Not sure if that is how you are supposed to do it but it worked for pictures then I removed the app.

[Q] Why do we root?

The title says it all
with the iPhone we jailbreak it in order to install cr**ked Apps and install some other Apps that cant work without the necessary privileges (ex tethering), what about Android devices?
Thanks
Because we can and it's my phone and I don't want to be told what I can do with it, but the primary reason for me to Root and S-OFF is so i can install CM7
Rooting means that you can flash whatever custom rom you want from proposed android gingerbread (before its officially released) to chinese MIUI rom (similarities to iphone). whichever takes your fancy....as there are alot to choose from.....you can also overclock your device to improve speed and underclock to improve battery....you also get total freedom to file manage your phone and make necessary backups if anything were to go wrong....this is just some of the endless possibilities of rooting...
Hope this helps
Rooting gives you full access to your phone.

I rooted mine to get rid of all the rubbish bloatware that comes with being an Orange UK customer. They suck for bloatware, takes over everything! In your face Orange!
also, rooting gives us the possibility to overclock/underclock!
it is necessary to install custom rom.i advise to you.
we root in the pursuit of perfection
we root because we need more control over our phone. we only want what we need and remove what we don't need. stock ROM is good, but its not enough.

Why do people root?

I'm still rather new to Android, and I was wondering- why do people root their phone exactly? If I root my phone, will it run slower? Also, can I run the stock ROM my phone ships with if I root it?

We root, because we must... It doesn't make the phone slower. It does the opposite (With the right kernel, that is )
Rooting ONLY means, that you have the right, to accss the ROM (Read-only memory) where the system files are saved...
Which means, yes. You can have root access, on a stock-ROM phone
(If interested, check my signature ^^)

Rooting just gives you more control over your phone, the ability to easily freeze/delete system apps, flash alternate kernels, etc... You can run your stock ROM whilst rooted, it won't slow you down.
Rooting also opens the door to being able to flash (i.e. install) alternate, custom ROMs among other things.
A basic rooted stock ROM is a good place to start out, and learn your way around things before you decide, or not, to start flashing custom kernels, ROMs, etc... OR you can happily cruise along on a fully stock phone.
Just a quick summary; there's lots more specific info available on this site, and the intarwebz to give you more detail if needed.
I'm fairly new, so hopefully I get this right. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
My guess is that you're coming from iPhone if you're asking if it will slow it down since jailbreaking tended to do that. It won't slow it down unless you install apps and mods that run in the background and stuff.
All rooting is, is allowing programs to run as the root user (I *think* I'm right here). This means that they can access parts of the system that are unavailable to be modified on unrooted ROMs. This means you can get things that tweak system level functionality. It's very similar to jailbreaking an iPhone except apps in the Play Store aren't prohibited from having root functionality baked in.
Yes you can root the stock ROM.
Hope that answers it for you, and I hope I got it right. It's tough trying to figure some of this stuff out. Nothing out there really explains why things are done, but only HOW they're done. Bit of a nuisance trying to get into this in that regard.

There are many reasons to root, my favorites are that I can access the root or the phone, meaning I can replace the rooms, kernels to my liking. I can overclock or underclock the phone. One more than I like to do it use ad blocker so I don't need to deal with the stupid ads that are in free apps

And the benefits like custom colors, kernels, ROMs, and all that is nice.

To get the most out of my phone. Especially in the g1 days, you pretty much had to root because of the phones limitations

You root to gain admin access to your phone. You'd never use a computer without admin access, same on a phone. You can tweak and change anything you can imagine with root access.
And no it doesn't make it slower, actually can make it faster.
Root access doesn't do anything in itself. It just gives you administrator access to all of the system files.
Once you have that access, you can start tweaking.
Root is only required for deep-level back-up programs, some file explorers, and rom tweakers such as Rom Manager.
Day to day stuff, Android is pretty open to anything.

Root or not to root

The phone is pretty good out of the box.
However rooting will give you much more control on the phone. So it really depends on what you want to do with your phone.
Example rooting enables you to remove bloatware from your, disable auto start ups , backup data with titanium backup etc.
But since you are new. I suggest you play around with your phone a bit longer for the stock experience and do more research on the advantages of rooting before you decide to root and delete/disable important system files or fiddle something that screw up your phone causing you to re Flash the whole rom
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
Don't root it if you don't need it right now. I have rooted my previous phones for apps like Titanium Backup but I didn't need any of these apps on Note 2, so I didn't see a point in rooting. I suggest you the same. There is no big plus when you root. You can remove carrier apps, or install apps that messes around with system files but if you don't need these things, you don't have to root. You'll root it when you need it.
I'm ignoring the exynos exploit when I say these things btw.
I would say yes
It depends on you. If you like it out of the box then don't.
For me it is always - YES. Why?
-Titanium Backup (backup)
-Mobile odin (flashing)
-Adaway (hmm)
-all music tweaks
-Joystick Center (all games played with pad)
-sd-booster (that's clear)
-undelete (restoring deleted files)
-WifiKill (find out yourself )
And much more.
Rooting just to install apps and little modifications to your phone to show off to your galaxy note 2 friends that aren't rooted is enough reason but there's a lot more behind rooting!
Sent From An Incognegro Galaxy Note 2
I'd always do it, mainly because I'm paranoid and cannot live without regular device backups.
And there is always a bunch of apps I don't want on my phone, but cannot get rid of easily. However, with the amount of space on the Note 2 that's hardly a reason anymore - it definitely was one when I still had the HTC Desire.
DON'T root it unless you need custom ROM.
AND
I don't think you need custom ROM because it is toooo early looking for one now..
Trust me on this..

You can't back uo app data without a root and titanium backup. A very annoying thing about unrooted phones. Why can't they just let us back stufd up?
With Exynos Abuse, I don't see any reason not to root. It's super simple to root and unroot. Also, if you disable the exploit with Exynos Abuse and are going to unroot, make sure to enable (uncheck the box) the exploit first. If you do not, you will no longer be able to use the app to root, until you use a different root method. (I'll give you one guess on how I know that... :banghead: )

Without root you cant delete all this unnecessary samsung app-**** and free more than 100mb space from your ROM memory.
Rooting takes my device to a whole new level.
-Titanium backups
-Adblocking
-Spen gesture control
-Xposed framework for unlimited multiwindows, per app dpi settings, various ui tweaks.
-Etc.etc... so many valuable tools work only with rooting.
Backups are my main concern, but the other root apps make this device much more enjoyable.

I say root. I've rooted many devices and had no issues. Best advice for a noob would be to read over the root process for your device. After you have read the process once go over it again, and again, and again. Best to know the in's and out's before you attempt the process. Not to make the whole process sound scary but knowledge is power. If your on the fence about the whoel root process I say root but leave stock recovery. This way when it comes to returning phone for warranty if needed you simple unroot and off it goes. Worst case if you want to go all the way the great peeps of XDA always have a return to stock guide. Hope this helps
ROOT ur going to do it sooner or later
Definitely go for Root. All those above suggested programs are a must, especially Adblock and i will add Lucky patcher, which removes google adds from free programs.
