First thing first. Let me explain that I'm pretty much an Android novice. I have had the Moment for a few months and never modded it and just recently got the EVO and as of yet have not modded it.
I don't think I have the balls to attempt the "FULL ROOT" but I think I'm willing to try this UnrEVOked method. It seems super simple to install and uninstall. My question to you guys is this: Using this UnrEVOked root what exactly am I getting that I'm not getting from a fresh out of the box stock EVO 4G?
From my limited understanding the only things you can really do is overclock the phone (is this even safe? If so what is the best program and what are the ideal settings?) and also enable tethering (once again, what program would you use?)
Anyone that has UnrEVOked installed on their EVO please give me some insight about this and whether or not you recommend others to try it.

From what Ive gathered trough complains and other post. It's a temp root. removing apps return after a reboot, no writing to system etc. Pretty useless *from what it seems* SO just take the plunge and do the toast method as it is also needed to run the latest Roms if you intend to do such. Hope that was semi-helpful.
It allows me to run wireless tether and full titanium backup, which is all i wanted to do anyway.
I feel the same way.. unrevoked gave me wifi tether, system panel and Titanium. I may take the plunge when there's a full blown 2.2 rom. Until then, this is all I need.
That overclock app is really an underclock to save battery when in standby. Not sure it even works.
My battery is hanging just fine now that I've made the few tweaks and don't stay on it all day.

UnrEVOked is very simple which was it's purpose.
However it's not REAL root access. Real root gives you ability to flash custom roms that have MANY more features and tweaks that Sprint/HTC can't afford to invest the time/man hours/money in.
With Custom ROMS you get better battery life, more freedom and options to customize what Sprint/HTC shove down our throats.
IF you search the market for the word ROOT. You'll see what you're missing. Most of those apps won't work properly if you don't have real root access.
What is "real root?" having NAND access to flash a custom recovery image and being able to do away with ADB access from your computer and the ability to write to the /system folder.
Imagine being able to delete all that Sprint crap that is taking up space that no one uses. Not even you.
Your choice. It's all worth it. 79,000+ views for Damages ROM can't be wrong.

Where can I get wifi tether once I d/l Unrevoked? Also, what is system panel and Titanium?

I installed 2.0.2 version.
Titanium is a system backup tool.
And system panel is a neat little app that let's you look at your performance. I downloaded it when I did the overclock tool - which is still installed.. but it's debatable on if it's really do anything. So not sure if I can recommend it. But you can try it if you're having battery issues still. I did too many things at once and can't tell what really helped.

Some kid posted a video on utube stating u can d/l free paid apps on 4shared.com. Any truth to this to ur knowledge
I don't know about that site.. and like I said. I'm new to this too. But I think in theory, you can install any .apk file you want, if someone shares it with you. I've pulled several apps like that so far.
But there could be a licensing issue I just don't know about yet. Like some app might require a license file tied to hdw or something. I really don't know.
But, if you can get an apk file, you should be able to in theory install it from your sd card.
In truth tho, most of these apps are only one or two dollars.. and the developers deserve some compensation for their work. So it's one thing to install one to try out.. but if you like it, you should pay for it, donate, etc.

So, a Huge thanks to all those who worked on the method to get 2.2 rooted. I followed the directions and I am here, rooted. I used the Amon_Ra for my recovery back to 2.2. Now, this might be a stupid question, but What now? My phone looks the same, and I still can't remove sprint stuff. What are the next steps, I know i can install a custom "higher speed ROM", but can i just work from where i am now? I have the Superuser icon, but when i open it, i get "no apps in list" ? what do i need to install to start taking advantage of all that rooting has to offer?

Choose a new fancy ROM, download it to your SD card and use Amon to flash it. Easy as pie.
They are many great ROMs from many great developers here. Everyone has their preferences, mine is Fresh. I've never been dissapointed.
Agreed.....I can tell a big difference in speed and battery life but now what? I also can't delete any of the Sprint bloatware and I am on Baked Sense 1.6.
I don't understand: Why would you root your phone if you don't even know what it does? Not trying to be a ****; I'm just saying.
Firstly, if you rooted, all you did was revert your phone back to 2.1 so you no longer have Froyo. (edit: nevermind.....I see you want back to 2.2; I'm guessing you flashed a 2.2 stock rooted rom to your phone). The superuser app is empty because it hasn't given superuser permission to any apps that require it. If you want to see your superuser app in action, download ShootMe or screenshot from the market, and you will see the app asks for superuser permission.
I rooted my phone because I thought it was ridiculous to pay Sprint $30 a month to use the wireless tether option that was built into the Evo by HTC and which I already paid for when I purchased the phone. Now I use my root privileges to do a lot more, but my point is that I had a reason to root my phone to begin with. Download wireless tether and try it.
If you want to uninstall apps, download Titanium Back up (that's what I use anyway) and go to town removing stuff. I am not sure if the free version removes apps or not because I got the paid one from the beginning, but now that you are rooted, it is well worth the price for the premium license. You can use this app to move stuff to your SD card and free up your phone's internal memory, too. You can also back up all your apps and system data which is handy when you flash from one rom to another and you have to do a full wipe of your phone.

First thing to do: Head over to the developer forum and flash Netarchy's kernel, which will uncap your FPS. Do it ASAP, DO IT NAO!!!!1!!1!1!eleven. Then come back here and tell us how amazing it is.

Here's the thing. The android revolution is ongoing and picking up steam. and i could talk about that all day long. Opensource, kick blackberry in the berry, and send apple back to where it was after its huge popularity boom in the 90s - struggling to overcome its fatal closed system flaw. Beyond that, I bought my Evo for 2 reasons. My 16 month son threw my blackberry into the toilet (nice work - i now appreciate it), and my tech guy at work has been raving about his rooted Droid x2. as of 10 days ago it didn't seem possible to root the 2.2 froyo, but he told be to be on the lookout. I figured this is a little like an arms race and that the sooner i rooted my phone when the method was avail. the better. (tech guy is in italy with his fiancee right now, or i would be asking him all these questions)
Soooo, it seemed to me, that in the spirit of owning an opensource device and joining the android revolution, that i should root my phone and unlock all the magic.
I'm no computer programming whiz, i dont write code, and i learned all of the terminology on this board in the last 2 days. So lost, but learning fast.
I did not root my phone for no reason. I clearly understand the utility of having superuser status (besides, most guys are wired to want that kinda thing regardless) - deleting annoying sprint apps that chew power, "re-tuning" the device to run more efficiently, and of course, free wifi tethering.
But, after completing the most excellent root method described in this forum, i found myself staring at a rooted 2.2 and wondering what the next step was. There are NO google results for "i've rooted my evo 4, now what?" so thats why i started this thread, figuring that I was not the only one in my situation

If you did unrevoked then I would flash the latest Amon-RA recovery image. No offense to clockworkmod, amon is just my preference.
Poke around the recovery console and learn how it works.
NAND FIRST!! haha, develop that habit before you flash anything (roms, kernels, etc.), just in case
-Flash a rom that suits your needs. Read their OP's and threads to learn what they are about and what the people that use them think. I would suggest you just flash the stock rooted 2.2, play with it for a week or two to see how root works and explore what you can do with it. Also look into backup methods so you are familiar with how to preserve your stuff when you flash a different rom.
FPS = frames per second. There are kernels that will lift the 30fps cap.
Read about kernels and how to take advantage of them.

It is highly recommended that you do what he says! You'll see a major improvement in lots of areas. In case you're curious here is my setup: STOCK 2.2 w/ Netarchy kernal. I chose the stock 2.2 so that I may do with it what I like. It's very fast and very stable.

You can remove Sprint stuff, just have to spend some time and learn to use ADB. Rooting an EVO is not the same as rooting an iPhone, you can pretty much do everything you can from rooting an iPhone without even rooting Android so the difference is not that great.
Most of what you gain from rooting Android is being able to do things the carrier doesn't wan't you to do such as install free wifi tethering, remove their apps etc... You can also install others roms where they have already done this stuff for you but from what I have seen on the EVO and 2.2 battery life suffers greatly on pretty much any rom other than stock rooted so there is a lot to be gained from learning adb and just working with the stock rooted rom to remove the apps you wan't to.
I'm in the same boat. I got my new EVO on Tuesday, it was rooted an hour later. Why? Because that's how we do things! First thing for me it was important to have tethering. Work blocks damned near everything. As I learn more about the Android system I'll get more use out of root.
I was carefully paying attention to the thread and particularly bluehaze's answer. I'd like to learn more about using adb to remove sprint crap. That amazon app is always restarting itself. If there an ADB for newbs guide around here anywhere? I looked but didn't see.
There are a few things that I use which make root a necessity.
- custom ROMs provide a setup more tailored to what you are personally looking for
- using wireless tethering without being artificially limited to Sprint's commercial offering
- backups! I can boot into recovery and make a backup image of my setup at any point. That way no matter what settings I change or what ROMs I test out, I can always go right back to my stable daily driver in 5 minutes if needed.
- custom recovery and superuser allow you to install things, uninstall things, theme things, etc. Nothing worse than not being able to change something on my own device
- speed, battery, etc. via tweaked kernels. I'm using Baked Snack's ROM and kernel now and it's way faster and nicer on battery than stock

im new to this so im trying to figure out all this stuff. i recently rooted my phone using unrevoked, i believe i did it right but who knows. can someone please let me know the advantages and disadvantages of using unrevoked or another rooting tool im just looking to speed up my phone remove the lag remove some of the sprint apps and able to get some cool apps on my phone any help will be greatly appreciated

The older method of Unrevoked was known to break 4G for some people. I don't know, because I've never used it, but I haven't heard any complaints from the people using the new Unrevoked.
To check if you phone is rooted properly, simply download the Superuser from the market and install it (you may already have it if it came on the rom you installed). If you do have, download shootme from the market and see if it allows you to take a screen shot of your phone. If it does, you're rooted.
What I don't understand, is why would you root the phone if you don't know what rooting does or what it can do for you.
I like the unrevoked root as it is easy to do and easy to remove.
The best part of rooting for me is installing custom roms and getting rid of the bloatware from sprint. Also by installing one of the new custom roms you will get the new leaked HTC OTA update (thanks to flipz) which makes the EVO a lot more usable because you actually get decent battery.
Wifi tether and quickboot are nice too.
Go try a new rom with some interesting additions like bakedsnack or vaelpack and you'll soon get the hang of it. First thing you need to do is install a custom recovery. You can use clockwork or amon ra, but I've had a few problems with clockwork so I would recommend amon ra. Either of these let you install custom roms and do nandroid backups.

Best place to get roms and kernels would be under the development forums on this website.
They are specific to the phone (ie you likely cannot run a Desire rom on your EVO).
Always backup your nand with whatever recovery image your using before flashing new stuff, that way you can always get back to where you were if you screw something up.
Hey guys... plain and simple, I need help. I'm kind of a noob, but not really. I know a little bit here and there but I want to get good with my Evo, I mean really good! I'm currently browsing XDA in my car (Evolution X) tethered to my Evo 4G. Love Evo's. I'm also on a macbook pro, which makes a lot of the standard rooting options difficult for me, and i'm not running boot camp on my mac, so I don't have windows access.
Anyway, I want a foolproof, safe root. Currently I'm rooted with unrEVOked3. I hear not so great things, especially that full root might not have been attained. I want to confirm this and I don't know how. I don't want to be stuck with a root that might brick me in the future or give me problems down the road. I'm considering unrooting unrevoked and re-rooting with a more solid root method. I know that it doesn't matter the method as long as root is attained in the end but, from what i've read, a lot of people just don't agree with unrevoked method. I'm also concerned about the updates that unrevoked will provide when OTAs come out.
Here are my objectives...
1. Be familiar with the definitions and common terms root users use. For example, I want a clear understanding of recovery mode, HBOOT, bootloader, setcpu, kernels, etc. I know a little bit, but I don't feel comfortable enough to start messing around with flashing roms, changing kernels, etc. I want to be though.
2. I want to be able to flash roms.
3. I want full root and guaranteed SU permissions.
4. Wifi Tether.
5. ability and know how to overclock and underclock depending on the situation i'm in.
I know a lot of you guys will tell me to search and READ READ READ, but i've been doing this since I got me Evo about a month and a half ago. I rooted with unrEVOked3 because on my mac it was a simple download and click.
I downloaded the android-sdk-mac-86 download and I also have ECLIPSE for mac. I know these are app development programs, but will this help me with root and everything from there on?
Does anyone have a link to a site with definitions and explanations or is someone willing to take the time to explain to me these definitions and how they relate to android and effect the phone...

I've read a lot about rooting and never found anything answering this specific, simple question. Please point me in the right direction if I've just carelessly looked past it.
If I go to unrevoked and do the simple root, does it change anything right away? All I really want to do is delete the bloatware, wipe battery stats, that kind of thing. I still want sense and everything else I currently love about my phone. I don't want to lose anything, just make a couple tweaks I can't do without rooting. So does rooting leave everything as is and just give you more permissions? Or does it inherently change anything I might regret?
What rooting does it gain you access to change things you normally couldn't. you can flash custom ROMs that have all the excess bloatware deleted out of it. They can be optimized, they can have added features in them, amongst other things. You can also flash custom kernels that will give the phone either more power ( overclock, but in this case overvolting ) they can give them better battery life, but it will be a tad slower. You can also get a nice blend in power and battery life ( read my guide in my signature about kernels )
You can also get free wifi tethering that Sprint charges you for. You can also just theme your ROM to how you like it. There are many many many more things, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
You can root your phone using revoked, but then if you're looking to do all of those things, then why not flash a nice ROM that has that stuff done? Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo is a NICE sense rom. Its fast etc.
I know all the fancy stuff rooting can do for you, and maybe one day I'll get into that. But for the time being, I still don't know the answer to my question. Will rooting in and of itself change anything? What I would like to see happen for now is: I root, and everything stays the same, except for the added access to things. Will that happen?
All the extra stuff may come in time, but for now, I'm not an expert on this topic and I don't have the money to throw around to risk damaging my phone because I was misinformed about something. I'm very timid when it comes to this!

The only thing unrevoked does, is change the security settings to S-off, adds a custom recovery, and adds the Superuser app. Otherwise you wont know the difference.

1. is there a way to save all my apps and email addresses, pretty much just move everything over to the rooted product or have a backup of it i can access. i mainly don't want to lose my emails that aren't gmail cause i dont remember all the passwords.
2. is there a way to come back to stock? and have all my stuff still there?
3. whats the easiest way, i'm currently eyeing Unrevoked3.
4. what are the pros and cons of rooting?
5. i keep hearing about there being no security and i want to know how to keep my phone secure while also being rooted.

1.Once you root [recommend using unrevoked] it won't touch your apps, ect. it'll be the stock rom with root access, so you won't lose any data.
2.Yes, you'd run the unrevoked s-on tool, the a 3.70 ruu to return back to stock, unrooted.
3.Yes, use unrevoked. Just make sure HTC isn't installed, but was prior. You only need the drivers, and install the hboot drivers.
4. Pro: Highly customizable: splash screen, boot animations, multiple roms, themes for roms, increased battery life, you can take it further.
Con: Only real one is you can brick your phone by doing something stupid, like doing a battery pull during a radio update. Quickest way to brick it. More trouble shooting than non rooted phone, but most are easily fixed.
5.There is security. A small amount of people have claimed to got viruses from downloading pirated apps from sketchy sites. If you choose to use them, no problem, put you can't post links to paid apps. If you really want protection, you can install lookout mobile security, nice features. But basically, don't download from sketchy places.
so i will keep all my emails and also what about applanet?
1: using unrevoked, you don't have to. any other method, you can back up apps with titanium backup. contacts with stock contact backup.
2: yes. unrevoked s-on tool (even if you don't use unrevoked, the other methods use the unrevoked radio exploit) and then ruu back to stock.
3: easiest is unrevoked, but then you are pretty clueless afterwards. you can do this if you want, but i'd personally reccomend the method in my signature. not as hard as you think. mostly just copying over commands. teaches you A LOT as well.
4: pro: do anything you want with yoru phone. roms, roms, roms, roms, themes, boot anims, splash screens, free tether, anything you want, updates sooner, other phone's updates on your phone, stock android (not htc), modded stock android (cm7 is sexy), a bunch of other stuff, gets you away from video games, get a bit of tech knowledge.
cons: you can brick by pulling battery during radio update, or by the flash memory corruption like 7 people have reported (but they all got free refurbs, and 7 is like 1/3000000th of rooters anyways). if you are experiancing problems, you need to do more troubleshooting than stock. this is actually good though, because my dad's phone is messed up, and the only thing he can do to fix it is ruu. thats it. i can change roms, diagnose, replace apks, anything. also, you need some time on your hands.
5: the security they are talking about is from you. yes, if you turn off your nand protection (root) then you are more easily succeptible to viruses, but most have rageagainstthecage exploit anyways, which would let them do the same thing. the downside here is all antivirus and moblile security things will say that you have system viruses. ignore that.

applanet is piracy, and very risky. most malware and viruses come from things liek that.
and for your question there \/. unrevoked is pretty self explanitory. just install and uninstall htc sync, install drivers, and run the program.

Follow these and you'll be fine.
-Install modified windows hboot drivers
-Install htc sync, immediately uninstall it
-On your phone, enable usb debugging [menu>settings>applications>development]
-Connect your phone in charge only, run unrevoked [will show up as reflash_package on your pc]
Let it run its full course, will take ~5 minutes, and reboot twice.
