After about a year and a half of joyful use with my HTC desire...It died two days ago...in a tragic twister accident...the screen no longer displays anything but a few white lines, yet the touch screen still works...i just cant see what im typing...or what im doing, not very practical.
Now What should i do now...send it off for repair, being in mind it has a custom Rom on it, Or just buy a new phone...another htc desire? or?
Thanks for your opinions
You are considering getting another HTC Desire? A 2 year old obsolete piece of technology?
Man you have a valid reason to upgrade then why not do it. At least go with HTC DesireS or something.
Haha my desire is like my son!
haha, true this is my opportunity...TO EBAY! lol..not sure if i really trust ebay tho !
You could get a beater phone and use it until you find a phone you want on eBay, kijiji, etc. Or until the one you want releases.

Sensation imo.
Or maybe step outside the square and go Nokia Lumia900
I would say send it for repair, there is no issue what so ever with your phone contaning custom rom, to my opinion it is just your LCD display died, it is nothing compare a new device cost, if you repare it you mite even get a good price for it, which will make your new phone cheeper.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
I don't think repairing it will be worth it. The display costs about 60-70 Euros and if you don't repair it on your own, it gets even more expensive.
I got a new Nexus S for my girlfriend for 200,- Euros, so...
If you got some "good hands", there are planty of you tube movies how to replace the lcd, and if you go to item number 300640556669 on ebay, you will find the display for about 28€.

Thank you for all of the replies, I went into the 3 store. they said if it is accidental damage, it will be repaired for free.
as their is no visable scratches or damage, i hope they can do for free.
Now, once its repaired, i might try and sell the desire, and get a sensation...and if it cant be repaired, ill try to fix it my self, which will be a fun project!

I've been looking at the following site, from searching around on this forum...
http://www.htceurope.com/Wizard.aspx
Filled in all the details, IMEI, Serial Number, etc... and its coming up registered as a 9090, when I try select MDAIII or MV2000, it Always defaults back to 9090...
SO... this is what puzzles me... surely if HTC dont do O2 repairs, why would they have the mobile on the 'warranty' list, as I tried my old Smartphone on there (which is way out of warranty) and it says there is no valid warranty for this phone!
Basically, the TFT is cracked to hell, BUT i can still use the phone using MobiControl software, and it makes/recieves calls just fine!
Would it be worth filling in the Warranty form, or just giving HTC a call on Monday (tomorrow)???
I got the phone for free of my brother who works in a phone store, with a smashed screen, was originally a demo phone, so only has 15 hours outgoing calls logged only & no incoming, in A1 condition, no scratches, all accessories, MINT!
If HTC decide not to repair it, or they do at a charge, how much would it be for...
HTC to carry out the repair if they add a surcharge (as stated on there site)
Other individual to eith ersupply a screen for me to fit, or fix it for me??
Cheers
Paul
I sent off my phone to HTC (uk) cause some friend sat on my mdaIII and cracked the screen (just the touchscreen.. not the LCD).
This happened 1 month after i got my phone.. (just my luck i guess).. Anyway they said screens aint in warranty, and they charged £90 (GPB) plus VAT (£105.75). I had 2 options.. pay it.. or pay 15 pounds to return.. so i took option 1..
Note tho.. it took em ages! i called 1000 times for status.. and they were saying waiting for parts and stuff... BULL****.. in the end and 3 months of waiting.. they said they had to replace the motherboard cause the screen wasnt compatible.. what a load of bull**** lol.. they gave me another phone.. different serial, IMEI and everything.. but 3 months of waiting was HELL..
hmmmm well if thats what there like, I doubt I will get them to sort it then...
Rang HTC before, but is just an answerphone service, pointless & crap!
Had a quote for £165 inc. labour & such so far from Apex Laptops, so gona shop around & see if I can get it cheaper! But a little birdy told me... that the XDA IIs screens are very hard to come by, as seems to be a common fault them going?? dont know much about it tbh!
Cheers

HTC won't touch o2 stuff from experience despite the commonality between models / parts accross the brands - I tried to get a screen done in an XDA exec and they wouldn't as they claimed they coudln't guarentee to have the screen that matched my board (see previous poster )so I think they stick to the brands they have a repair contract with, even though I could quote the part number needed!
o2's own XDA helpline quoted £165 for the exec, HTC had quoted £115 for the 'm5000' so were cheaper :-(
I ended up getting one direct from Taipei for about £100 and fitting it myself.
If you source the b.a part yourself make sure you check the part number ( sony or toppoly) before ordering from anywhere, most places have a 'no returns' policy.

I had a little accident with mine on Sunday. It fell out of my pocket and down 4 or 5 stairs in a carpark. The side cracked off on one of the sliders, so its come off its runners and the screen and unit are two separate pieces! However oddly enough the screen isn't cracked at all!
I'd sell it, but insurance is providing a new one tomorrow and I need to give this one back.
Lovely device but some things I just can't live with!
Does anyone want to give me £300 for it (brand new with box and original HTC case) or a swap for an unlocked HD2 (with a perfect screen please)?
Thanks for looking...

HD2 for sale
Just read your post.
I've gone the other way and bought a Desire. So now have an HD2 for sale. I was going to list it on ebay, but if you've sold your Desire and not yet bought an HD2 then mine is for sale. I'll take 200 quid for it if you're interested. Saves me the hassle of sticking it on ebay and paying them fees.
Screen is fine...official HTC screen protector on since 1 week after buying phone and it's lived in the supplied pouch since day 1.
Can send pics if required. Let me know...email or reply on this thread.

Hmm, I've got an unlocked HD2, flawless which I have no need for and it just sits collected dust. Well, in it's box
Could do with another Desire...
Swapsies?

Don't get me wrong, I think the HD2 is one of the best bits of kit and the build quality is second to none. I just was never a fan of winmo and i'm not much of a rom/tweak/h4xx0r (is that what the kids say these days?)
But I'd prefer another desire as I'd get more use out of it and one thing i hate is wasted technology. And my HD2 is just sitting there..
actually, now you mention it...

Sale or swap might be the way forward for me too...since I'm new to Android at least I'd have a back up if I bricked mine...lol.
So there you go...sale or swap anyone?
And for the record, I'm with isaw on my opinion of the HD2...it is a fantastic bit of kit, just for me I felt the time was right to move on to a newer platform.

Hi Jayz,
I'll try and get some pics done tomorrow...not been well today (recovering from kidney stone op earlier in the week, but had a bit of discomfort today). It's got a screen protector on at the minute. Do you want me to take the screen protector off so I can take pics of the actual screen? I have a spare screen protector (genuine HTC) I can send with the phone if you buy it.
I also have a 4gb card in the phone which I'm happy to include with the phone. Or I can put an 8gb card in for an extra £10. That's up to you.
The phone is currently flashed with CleanEx 3.50 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=629409) - which is now up to v4.30. However, I'm happy to flash it back to a stock ROM if you want.
It got it on a vodafone contract but it was unbranded and unlocked from the factory.
I've also flashed the HSPL to 1.42....basically, making it incredibly simply to flash any roms.
I don't live in the Midlands, but I'm sure we can work something out if you want the phone.
As I said before, I'd rather sell it on here as I know it'll go to someone who is willing to experiment with it as much as me...plus fleabay don't get their unjustifiably high fees from the sale....lol.
Rich
if you want you can send photos of ur phone to my email address [email protected]. Only two things i need to know one any marks on the screen and two any damage on body and don't worry about memory card.
Folks - I have a problem....
My Desire had an unfortunate accident involving a flight of stairs and a bounce-bounce-bounce-smash incident!
The insurance says it is unrepairable but they have no Desires in stock to replace it with a new one.
If they are unable to source a Desire and offer an alternative phone, what is the best option in your opinions?
***** slap them round the face and demand a replacement. It is up to them to provide it. You are paying for insurance and your entitled to a replacement phone so it's up to them to keep stocks up. There's nothing really you can do only talk to the insurance company. Talk to some manager instead of some grunt. You usually get a little more out of it that way.
Thanks - but if they genuinely cannot get a replacement within a reasonable period, what is my preferred alternative to demand from the manager as possibly an upgrade?
Desire HD, Samsung etc?
Take the money and get a new phone, or wait til after the Mobile Congress in Madrid and see what's out
DHD is a very nice phone but obviously size is a key factor so go see one in the metal
If they're gonna have you wait a bit, might as well go for the latest: HTC Inspire
We don't have 4G in the UK, so it's useless
I can't recomend the DHD, the build quality is aweful. I sold mine and kept with my Desire. I was very dissapointed with the device. If my Desire broke/failed I'd do what I could to get an identical replacement from my insurer.
Surely they can give you the money to buy another one? CPW have them for sale on their website so I'm sure they can get one from somewhere!!
Cheers - I shall "discuss" at length with them....

Hm! Do you use the GPS at all? If yes, then the Galaxy line would be a disappointment. If not, then get a Galaxy, I'd say...at least as snappy, tons of custom ROMs available and even more on the way; a tad larger AMOLED screen...
Personally i would hold out for another desire - they aren't in short supply so they should have no trouble at all in sourcing another (me and a mate only just got ours) to be honest Desire is still the mutts nuts and i wouldn't settle for anything less just my 2 cents
I bet they just don't want to part with money really so they're stalling.
Yeeeaaahhh!!
Quandry solved - replacement Desire just arrived
It is an unbranded and unlocked model A8181 where the previous one was a branded locked Orange one full of Orange crapware (until it somehow accidentally got rooted and a different ROM inexplicably appeared on it )
Happy days are here again...
I just stepped on my G2. I barely put any weight on it and boom, black screen with white lines. im finding out tomorrow if i have insurance or not. if i dont, can someone point me to everything im going to need to fix it myself?

Deng that sucks bro. If you have insurance with t-mobile you will have to pay I think 150-200+ bucks. If you want to repair the LCD am not sure what website to buy one.

Depending on what you actually broke, you may need a couple different parts. It sounds like you just broke your screen. Repairs Universe sells most replacement parts for every phone, as well as including free tools with purchases. If you do a search on Youtube, there's going to be multiple video tutorials available for fixing the G2's screen, including one from RU, which is rather excellent and detailed.
I hope your warranty comes through for you.
I sent my htc one x for repair it had a screen issue where black screen and no led lights at all .the phone has never had a unlocked bootloader nor water damage .they want me to pay 200 dollars for the repair due to they said it had a small scratch on the outer shell what should I do file a class action lawsuit ? Has any one dealt with htc before.
Small scratch in the outer shell? I sent my phone which was in pretty bad shape, cuz I had the WIFI and no-focus camera issues and they gave me a new one...so fight your claim.
U can try send a mail to htc with the paper that they reject ur repair n see what they say

I had my original HOX replaced with a second one even with scraches on the case. And the second HTC replaced with a HTC+ for free, while the second one had other scraches on it too. Just try to talk to a HTC repressentative, they are really helpful. That's how it worked for me.
Best of luck.

I am so dissatisfied about HTC Care, and I consider them the worst one to deal with (In a way, where they try to run away from their responsibilities as a way of cutting-costs!).
Let's just start saying, I gave them my phone + a technical paper which describes all the problem I am suffering from my phone, in addition to that I wrote my phone number ,and asked them if something isn't clear let them call me.
So, after waiting 5 days and no body called me, I assumed everything went fine, and decided to call them for checking. So, according to them, they didn't discover any fault about my phone! They couldn't see the visible yellow spot on my screen, and neither they find a problem in my flickering GPS ,and the other problems I told them about.
I called them for reinspecting my phone, and after spending more than 1 hour with them, they told me nothing to fix, and I will get my phone on Saturday.
Yet, I didn't receive my phone as they promised... You can only imagine of how happy I am about my first phone with HTC. :\

Thanks for your suggestion, one of my family members is a lawyer, and my (upcoming) brother in law is studying to be a lawyer as well.
I just find it frustrating to deal with HTC Care, (they are the one who needs customers ,and nothing special to make me stick with them for my next phone). Let be honest, HTC need to build a good reputation among their users ,and currently not only they are failing to do so, they forcing their customers to run away from them.
I got couple of ideas to do with my phone (I'l be listing them, in case someone get use of them), and screw HTC care.
1- Replacing my battery with One X+, this will greatly reduce my battery temperature and will prevent my screen from showing the yellow spot.
2- I'll pull up the antenna pins to get a better GPS,Wifi, and better 3G/2G Signal (thanks to gabrielvl for his creative way of fixing these issues).
3- Cleaning earpiece for better sound/clarity.
Ill be happy if they fixed my phone but im skeptical of sending it in for the second time .fighting with htc is like fighting a locked door with a dead bolt.what will tier 2 do for me except tell me I have to pay atleast I have my note 2 as a backup until then.i wanna file a class action lawsuit against htc but I don't know where to begin.

And what do you hope to achieve by doing so? You won't get any compensation worth worrying about, all you'll do is make some lawyers rich.
I wouldn't be seeking legal advice from a phone forum.
You know what? I think you just want to have a whine that you didn't get your way. Best to seek sympathy from your mum or girlfriend, not a phone forum on the internet and not the courts.

My HTC is a good phone but HTC need to relook at their customer service.
One wonders if the powers that be are aware of what happens further down the line.

Go for it.
So here's my update got my phone back unrepaired and after I did a htc survey and give them Bad review .few hours after that they called me and apologise and ask me to ship it back to get it fixed free.so they must have a heart somewhere.
That's what I was talking about. Good for you.
As a tip for future reference, not that I'm wishing that will be the case, try to keep in touch with the same representative. It helps... A LOT.
That's what I did and now I own a HOX+ network unlocked, absolutely free of charge due to the incompetence of the repair shop...
Really nice to hear that they still offer the support we used to know and expect from HTC.
Best regards.
