I have Hboot 0.93 from all the way back in the day when we had a 30 step root process. I'm pretty sure the answer is "no," but I'll ask anyway. Is there any good reason to update my hboot or should I just leave well enough alone?
Just leave it alone. If you have to unroot for any reason then re-root, on the newer hboots, much more of a pain.
What he said.
I'm still on the .76.2 eng hboot from right after launch and have never considered updating.

Thanks guys. That's what i thought all this time, but suddenly wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on something.
the only concern is that the .76 hboot can cause problems with certain kernels. i believe the anthrax kernel needs an hboot newer than .93... just read info for anything you are thinking about flashing. if it recommends a certain hboot i would upgrade.

So it seems as there is still some uncertainty in terms of updating to new hboot. Read some people lost root by doing so and read some were successful possibly due to having unrevoked forever installed. I updated to latest radio, wimax and nv already. Has anybody been able to downgrade the radio? I ask as it seems if downgrading is possible than unrevoked could be installed and then the hboot could be updated without losing root s-off. I appreciate any information and all your help.

Why would you want to upgrade the hboot?
Was reading a few threads that suggest we should. I believe calkulin posted saying that he would update the hboot if it weren't for the fact that he uses fastboot commands during his development. Page 110 of his thread.

From what I've seen the new hBoots are all backward compatible, and as long as you have already ran Unrevoked Forever you *should* keep S-OFF, but the new hBoot has been particularly stubborn when it comes to abiding by the S-OFF. The extended commands on the eng-hBoot may not be very useful to most people but they can be very handy if something goes wrong and you manage to fubar your phone. So as long as you retain S-OFF or a custom recovery you should be ok using the 2.02 hBoot but I would wait awhile to find out more about ver 2.10. Especially if you plan on upgrading your radio.
I have already upgraded radio, wimax and nv and I don't have unrevoked forever installed . My hboot is the original with fastboot commands.

I have 0.79, and as long as everything else is working, I don't see why it should be necessary to upgrade. And now that I've already updated all my radio's with the latest combo pack, I'm apprehensive about doing it anyway.

Same here except I think I'm at even a lower version... 0.76
What would the point be to upgrading hboot to 2.02? It's one thing I don't really understand all that well.
Anyone care to explain?
So, I have seen a lot of people have issues with HBOOT or suspected HBOOT conflicts in here. I have the ENG HBOOT .76 and have not had any reason to suspect it as a problem with any of the ROMS that I have tried. But I am wondering... is it not possible to go back to the .76 HBOOT once you have gone up to the 2.10? And if it IS possible to go back, why isn't everyone doing it?
.76 is an older one thus easier to work with. The newer ones 2.02 and 2.10 more partitions around, so it makes it a tad harder for recovery devs. Yeah you can downgrade your hboot but possibly too many possible things can go wrong. I mean maybe earlier as the newr hboots came out, a downgrade might be smart. But pretty much everything is worked out now.
Imo .76 hboot is the best..don't upgrade the hboot unless u have too.

Ok. I need to unroot because I've got some screen separation and some dead pixels on my Evo, and want to get the screen replaced at the sprint store so I don't have to pay for it. I'm currently running Fresh 3.5.0.1 with the stock kernel, Radio is 2.15.00.09.01, PRI 1.77_003, PRL 60671 and my hardware is version 0002. I rooted a long time ago using unrEVOked and unrevoked forever and then got the HBOOT 0.76.2000 using this. I've already done all the research on how to unroot and found that this should do it for me. My question is, will that method take away the .76 hboot? If so how difficult will it be for me to get it back? Also is there a better pc36img that would be better for me to use to make re-rooting easier?
Any help on this topic would be much appreciated.

Just some FYI alot of times they give you a replacement phone but you can downgrade from .97 with out problem so if you do run a RUU and get the .97 Hboot you can still go back to .76 and rooting any of those is easy still

I know they do, I actually called the local sprint repair store and asked if they could replace the screen. The rep said yes, but I'll believe it when they do it. I can live with the phone the way it is, but I figured if I can get it fixed then I might as well.
I hate to be a PITA but I want to make sure I do this right, is this the correct place to find the ruu? How do I know which one contains the .97 hboot? Like I said sorry for the questions, I've learned a lot since I decided to root, but the biggest lesson was to always make sure I know EXACTLY what I'm doing and why. Again thanks for the help

I unrooted with this method just this weekend and it worked pretty well. Took my phone in and they didn't say anything, unfortunately my phone couldn't be fixed so i will be getting a refurb unit I also had the .76 Hboot and this method did upgrade it to .97 hboot with 3.26 software build. Just make sure you run the s-on tool a couple times since I had the .76 hboot it never changed to s-on and still read s-off but once I started the PC36IMG and the hbooot was upgraded the hboot started showing S-OFF.
Ok, so the .97 hboot is in the 3.26 update? Thats what I was waiting for, thanks for all the help everybody. I'll post back here and let you know if they replace my screen or not....keeping my fingers crossed.
I haven't flashed the new hboot yet. I'm currently running CM7 and have the eng hboot 0.76.2000 with s-off.
As promised, here are the questions:
1) Has anyone flashed the new hboot and tried to restore a custom rom?
2) If I flash the new hboot (0.86.0008) will I be able flash back to the eng hboot?
3) What are the differences between the two? I usually use cwm/recovery, but if I need the hboot, I would like to be able to flash all the partitions. Is this still possible with the SHP version?
4) the nb0 files seem like I could flash them via "flash hboot" and skip the zip or disk destroy. Does this make anyone nervous?
5) I lost track of all the rooting going on... I rooted with gfree before there was a version number. Is there a root method that unlocks even more?
Thanks in advance... I've been playing with the ASUS transformer lately which has an unlocked, unbrickable bootloader, so I know I should slow down before getting to flash happy with hboot.
Why do you want to flash a new hboot? Something wrong with your device or something?

Stick with the ENG HBOOT -- it has more of the fastboot commands enabled.
I think we all plan on sticking with eng hboot. Still doesn't answer the question about what is different with the new one.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Hboot changes are typically to add security (i.e., take away your freedom), not add new features or make anything better. Unlike the radio, it will NOT affect performance. This is just a bootloader, like GRUB or LILO. Once it hands the CPU off to the Linux kernel, its life is over. As long as it does that correctly, there is no reason to change it.
Thank you 234 I think that is the kind of answer we were looking for I would hit thanks but am on the mobile app.

What "features" are missing from the existing hboot? If it aint broke dont fix it, definately a case of theres a new version must flash it must be better, think will stay on my old boring hboot that does what i need it to do until the wiki is updated.

Hold my beer, I'm gonna flash the new hboot!
There's nothing wrong with hboot- I'm just asking about what differences there are. I never asked if it was better. I understand that it's not an engineering hboot, but I don't know what features are "missing" from it. This is the exactly the question that I'm asking. I know that flashing a new hboot will not increase my battery life or improve my radio reception. I know that flashing hboot can be dangerous and lead to bricked devices. I know that flashing hboot will not solve world hunger, resolve the world debt crisis, or bring peace in the Middle East.
I think if I asked about a new ROM, people would just tell me to flash it and find out for myself.
Flashing hboot can be dangerous and possibly brick your device. I do not recommend it. This thread is for entertainment purposes only!

No offence buddy but why do you want to flash a new hboot then? You mention different ways to root but as far as I am aware the wiki is the "official" recommended way, will stick with what Ive got until such times as the wiki recommends changing my hboot, that is the only guide to rooting that I need.
I never said I wanted to flash it. I just asked what was different about it. What changed from the old stock hboot? Maybe the partition layout is different and there is more memory allocated to data? I don't know, hence the questions.
As some people have asked, if it ain't broke, then why fix it? Then why would HTC/T-Mo change it? I'm just curious about the changes.
I agree, for most users, they would never need hboot. The zipped up roms and radios are just fine for flashing in recovery.
sent from my cyanogen(mod) vision
I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know what does the new hboot do. Furthermore, the only thing "wrong" with knowing more is that you get more awesome stuffs, kinda painful isn't it?
And, "if it ain't broke, then why fix it", why are we using HTC Vision here, not Nokia 1100, or better yet, smoke signal?

First of all, please accept my apologies if this has been in some way answered before. I did a search as far back as early 2011 but could not find a satisfactory response hence my posting here.
I have a PVT1 Desire with HBOOT 0.80.0000, 5.14.05.17 Radio and S-ON. The phone is rooted with Amon-RA recovery and currently happily running JB. All is working well and I am conscious of the fact that should I decide to update the HBOOT and Radio to the latest version, I would have to start from scratch in terms of rooting etc. but as the phone is currently working just fine, I would appreciate people's opinion if there are any real benefits in upgrading.
Many thanks in advance.

I really don't know or understand what you're waiting for. Why not s-off? It's so simple using revolutionary.
If you have a s-off, "rooting" is just flashing superuser from recovery. Not a complicated process at all.

Just to clarify, I have no issues with upgrading and then rooting from scratch but, as my understanding is, that would involve going back to the official GB rom (to upgrade the HBOOT) and then doing all else, I was just wondering if it worth the hassle i.e. whether upgrading HBOOT and the Radio files brings any tangible benefits.
Many thanks for your responses.

I have now updated to the latest Radio but still not sure about HBOOT and S-OFF. Since I am using JB which requires stock HBOOT, there is little advantage to S-OFF for me? Also, is there a quick way to upgrade just the HBOOT without having to install the offiicial HTC GB rom?
i wouldnt recommend upgrading RADIO ! had so many issues with different roms the last year after upgrading to the latest radio. Now I am back to the latest official radio that was delivered in Europe (5.11.05.27) and having no issues since then with ICS or any other roms.
I have the impression that some issues revolve from the newer 5.17.xx.xx radios being incompatible with some roms.

Why just not to install latest RUU - it automatically flashes new HBOOT and Radio.
About efforts - it's just allows to use modern ROMs.
May be a little improves quality, stability and battery time.
