I was expecting more. Much more. And Nokia disappointed me. First, I think I'm not astonished because I've seen the hardware before. At June.
The Lumia 710, it's pretty nice and cheap. It's great!
But hey, where is the front camera? Every device nowadays should have one. Even if I dont use it, I want it. Skype is just around the corner (hope so) and it will allow, or should, video calling.
So, Nokia did save WP7? Everyone was expecting this day to foresee the WP7 future. What now?
Saved or Doomed?
I don't think they've done either - it will survive with or without Nokia. What I do think they've done is totally shot themselves in the foot by leaving out FFC. Think I'll be getting the Titan now to replace my HD7, very disappointed with Nokia on this one.
I totally don't care about the front facing camera, so it's hard for me to see it as a make or break feature for the platform.
They weren't supposed to release some super awesome device.
The idea is that Nokia is a massive brand in Europe, has the biggest market share (despite relying on a dying OS, Symbian, and having competition from the iPhone) and brand. People will buy Nokias because they're Nokias. A certain premium comes from Nokias as seen with the unique design on the Lumia 800.
It's the equivalent of Apple going suddenly ditching iOS and deciding to go with Android and then releasing an iPhone 4S with Android.
I am more than disappointed by Nokia.
But this was predictable. They are just focusing mass customers and developping countries with low end devices...
I will stay with HTC or move to Android. That's pretty sad.
Looks like the 710 supports SD card, that's interesting

Think its important to note that these are just the 2011 devices. The rumors have suggested upwards of 12 Nokia phones in various form factors by the end of 2012.
Doomed....lol
Nokia don't save WP7...Windows 8 will...
Those of us in the USA are maybe disappointed but Nokia is first and foremost an international company that has never been truly huge in the US. The two phones announced today are just what was needed to expand the worldwide market and in my opinion that is why this is a big deal! Lot more people in the world than us USA technophiles! More WP7 phones in more hands is better for all of us!
Also have to say while its smallish I love the clarity of the screen on the 800! The video on Engadget seems to be filmed in natural light and wow, it still looks GREAT! Look forward to next year my friends! Theyve always told us thats when to expect the great things from Nokia!

I hope so!
Worldwide? I'm not from Nokia, but they took 9 months to take a device that they probably already had (N9), put some buttons and the OS. If XDA hackers would want to, they could put WP7 OS in N9 in 2 months or less. But nobody cares at all. Whatever, the point is.. they took 9 months to create a device that isnt a killer device, and they forgot the "Worldwide" word. Not even US. Rumors that they will arrive here at February. 4 months? Not even Apple is that slow.
And the Lumia 710 is the only device that surprised me, not for it's specs, but the price is nice.
And frontal camera isnt a feature that would turn me away from a device, but that's us. If I can have a bigger (not Titan bigger) screen and a frontal camera for the same price, I would choose the bigger screen, thanks.
But yeah, Lumia 800 is sexy.

Looks like Nokia's plan gonna fail...Think their strategy managers need to go back to school...
They gonna focus on China and India, which gonna fail real soon...Although they are huge population there, but it doesn't means you gonna success.
Lets make some simple assumption, especially in China now, what's most important for a developing country?they will definitely promote local company to grow rather than allow foreign companies to dominate their market such as Nokia. Even apple Ipad and Iphone tax so high in China. I can say that they are over hundread phone manufacturer in China who making KIRF phones...And now, here is the most important part, when talking about KIRF phone, nowadays they already started to use android(the green army). Why?cause it is free,no license fee or anything...
Therefore, the protection towards local investment and the "Free" goddess of Android will simply block Nokia out.
Lastly, don't think that people in developing countries won't want a high end-device...
It is a tough game for Nokia now,Anyway, windows phone 7 will be safe until the Windows 8 is released, complete integration, sync and kinect....
Doomed for Nokia...cheers
Everybody in this forum who makes $7/hr bagging groceries always knows that the bigger company sucks at planning, marketing and developing. Just watch & see whether they succeed or fail, none of us have any idea who will buy it.

$7/hr bagging groceries are a good measurement and good enough to judge their low end phones...Anyway,Thanks for your reminder.
Nokia starts to lose their ground...Take nine months to copy their own design on N9...great stuffs...
People with name starts with steve sucks ball( steve'n elop, steve ballmer), except steve jobs....
It is just silly Elop is praising their Nokia N9 sales are great while he is the one who killed the device.

Oh, forgot to mention. The 800 actually lists USB storage mode and TV out as features. So as usual, the haters always focus on the negatives but the oft requested features are ignored. OK, back to the hating!!

It also says FLAC and AVI support. For me it's now down to Nokia 800 and Samsung Focus S
I dont get all the hate i love this phone already and will be getting one on the 16th. I dont get what you are expecting tbh some sort or cyborg tech from the future? We all knew what WP7 supports etc and as for the rest of it i cant think of a better looking well made handset and the screen looks lush
Don't think its devices that will save WP7. It is marketing and retailer influence, which it looks like Nokia is taking very seriously.
Sure, the Lumia 800 looks decent and has pretty cool features, like navigation. However for a flagship device i miss a FFC, not that I need one but a flagship device should have one. With 16GB this device will be a great option to jump on the WP7 train if priced right. However if the Omnia W comes out around the same prcing I'll go for that. Because it has a FFC... But we'll see...
apparently the device has won an award for best mobile 2011, while this might sounds great, its only been out a day and dosnt even have a front facing camera..... whats is this award all about then???

Actually, the Lumia won Editor's choice, not Phone of the year. That award went to the SGS II, so I agree, utterly pointless award to a heap of junk! http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/flow/item/13654_The_Lumia_800_picks_up_UK_Phon.php
In Rob's defense, the first link from wmpoweruser did not convey that. As reflected as an update in your website:
Update: We've got more details from What Mobile (hat tip to Marcus in the comments), and the award to the Lumia 800 was the "Editor's Choice" award, not "Phone of the Year", as initially reported. (Phone of the year? That went to the Samsung Galaxy S 2)
But to discredit the awards because the Nokia Lumia 800 won without looking further?
I just got one, it is really nice.
But the speaker volume is a bit soft
Look, the euro guys have some shills like our J.D.Power !
And what is "editors choice" composed of ? Someone got paid to say nice things, and a $5 plaque.
Awesome.
Too bad real reviews and customer response don't mean much to "news" anymore.
Nokia official Q4 sales are out. Long story short, after being introduced in limited markets Nov 2011, Lumia sales are over a million units.
Not a bad start.
Edit: Removed 800 from thread title and body. Sales are for Lumia line and not only 800.
No, that's for the 710 and 800 combined.
" He said Nokia has sold “well over” 1 million such devices since the launch of the Lumia line in the fourth quarter, in line with company expectations.
Including other models, Nokia sold 19 million smartphones in the quarter. By comparison, Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the same period."
Lumina 710 and 800 combined 1 million.
N9: 1.4 million
N8: over 4 million
Nokia total losses: over 1 billion

Oh I am sorry, you are right. I thought the Lumia 710 came out this year. When exactly did the 710 launch? All I see is december.
This is an assumption, but could the Lumia 710 be responsible for much of those $1 plus million sales given the short window of launch?
Depends on which country. I think it was December.
Still in one month that ain't bad. it already has 45% of the Windows phone total sales and ATT in the states still doesn't have a nokia yet. only tmobile. (much smaller provider).

Moreover, the company announced that its total loss for the last year was of €1.073 billion ($1.4 billion). Compared to the previous year, the company’s profits went down 43 percent.

I think the numbers show the clear picture of where Nokia was heading and why Symbian was not the answer. I believe the only thing that is debateable is if Nokia should have gone Android vs Windows Phone.
Nokia got paid handsomely for choosing Windows Phone. Nokia will be the king of that platform, like Samsung is of Android (with HTC close just like WP). Maybe they should have done both Android and Windows Phone.
I think only time will tell where the WP road leads them. But I think I would have done the same thing Nokia did.
They shouldn't do Android. They should've focused on Meego and kept updating Symbian a very long time ago, and offered Windows Phone alongside their other offerings.
Why do people say RIM should do Android? That's silly.

According to the resellers of Lumia phones... It has sold better than N8 and N9.
“Lumia 800 sales is not comparable with the iPhone 4S, but it mixes with the mobiles that sell best on the market currently, it has also sold better than the N8 and N9 at launch, and it also sells better than other manufacturers do when there’s a new product, “says sales director Michael Bech from Telia.
“We have since Friday experienced the same demand, as shown by the introduction of the iPhone 4S. Lumia 800 has sold more than three times as much as number two on our sales charts, “Morten Steen Jensen, purchasing manager at TDC.
But then again... Lumia only started off on 6 markets... So I guess the estimated 1,3 million sold units aint too shabby.

I wonder if "sales" represented shipped devices to retailers or actual customer sales ? (You know how things are at times)
Also, I ran across this on my mail aggregator and just thought.... WOW:
http://m.tomshardware.com/news/Microsoft-Nokia-Windows-Phone-7-Deal-Partnership-money,14564.html
When Nokia and Microsoft last year revealed a strategic partnership that would see the former use Windows Phone 7 as its primary smartphone OS, it was obvious what Nokia stood to gain from the deal. The Finnish company, once a king in the cell phone industry, was struggling in the smartphone space. The company needed a smartphone OS that already had an established user base and the support and apps necessary for growth. However, this wasn't a one-sided deal. Though Nokia has been less than successful in the smartphone market, the company has a lot of brand loyalty, and the partnership offered Microsoft the chance to reach millions more customers. As it turns out, Microsoft paid rather a lot for this privilege.
Though both parties have remained quiet about the financial details of their agreement for the better part of a year, information was revealed by Nokia yesterday during a quarterly earnings call. According to Nokia's Q4 results, which were released this week, Microsoft paid Nokia $250 million to use Windows Phone 7. Described by Nokia as a "platform support payment," this isn't a one time thing. According to SlashGear's Chris Davies, who was first to pick up on the figure, there will be more payments made by Microsoft. The eventual figure is thought to be more than one billion dollars.
"Our broad strategic agreement with Microsoft includes platform support payments from Microsoft to us as well as software royalty payments from us to Microsoft," Nokia said in its results. "We have a competitive software royalty structure, which includes minimum software royalty commitments."
So far we know next to nothing about what Nokia is paying Microsoft, but Nokia did say that over the life of the agreement "both the platform support payments and minimum software royalty commitments are expected to measure in the billions of US dollars.
Nokia also confirmed yesterday that it has sold more than a million Lumia handsets, as predicted by analysts earlier this week.
Look at like this:
Go with Android and get sued by Microsoft and still be in decline
Or
Go with Windows Phone and get paid by Microsoft.

This. Plus the quite obvious fact that on Android you can't push out single core 3.7" phones and get away with it, it would have costed them a lot more also in terms of hardware, they would have been risking too much.

You are being a little extreme Fiya. If Android was complete crap then why are so many people buying them?
I do agree that Nokia made a overall strategic business decision to buy into Windows Phone that was sweetened by Microsoft.
Yes, it would have costed Nokia a bit more to introduce the Lumia 800 Android; they would have had to given it SGS2 specs for it to be a flagship phone in that ecosystem but the sales would have been astronomical! But I guarantee you Apple would have been quickly knocking at their door with legal documents (Nokia successfully sued Apple in 2007 for patent infringements).
The best thing for Nokia would be to keep doing S40 phones, Windows Phones, and if Android gets past the suits Android phones as well.
Vetvito: Well... Use Microsoft techs in your OS (Android) and expect to pay for it, or pay for Microsofts tech straight away... It's an easy decision for me... But I don't manufacture any phones.
Why do you stay in the WP forums again? I haven't seen one single positive post about it... I (as a Detroit Red Wings fan) don't hang around Philadelphia Flyers-sites and post about every negative aspect I can find about them... What's on your agenda really? Jealosy?
Why do Android sell? Price and impressive specs.
Before I get started I want to say before I read the Engadget review I have already read reviews from cnet, and the huffington Post.
I was really shocked by the review Engadget has published for the Lumia 900. The other three professional reviews I had read had mostly praises for the phone. They all mentioned the low display resolution limitation of current WP7 devices however they also never mentioned how stunning the display actually was. The color saturation and sunlight visibility of the screen appear to be amazing. Engadget fails to mention that but instead complains about how the screen isn't tapered.
To make it even worse they started a hardware article with 2 negative comments about the phone. The screen display and build quality. before I get into the build quality All I have to say is that unless you feel the phone is absolute crap you don't do this.
However all the other reviewed from other professional organizations and AT&T representatives have raved about the great the build quality is. Even Engadget employees sent to CES and MWC raved about this, so why now call it a negative?
Engadget, I am aware you believe the WP martetplace is disappointing because it has only 70000+ apps. However it has either all the main apps you actually use or a decent alternative. The marketplace doesn't need a lot of crappy apps, see google play, it just needs to have the ones you use. Seriously, who cares about fart apps or 50 apps all doing the exact same thing
Overall I felt this review was meant to downgrade the perception of the Nokia Lumia 900. It just doesn't fall in line with anyhting else I have read. I knew they had an apple and htc fetish but I still respected most of their reviews, however that changed today with this travesty.
I am even starting to think maybe Tim Cook called them directly to make sure AT&T pays for calling any other phone other than the iPhone 4S their "flagship."
** removed th verge review. I know I read another major professional review, I thought it was the verge but I guess it was someone else.
I thought the same thing. The reviewer seemed biased (against the phone) from the start. In contrast I just read the review on WPCentral and thought it was the best and most informative Lumia 900 review yet. Interestingly enough there is a comment at the end of that review that talks about the guy at Engadget and speculates he is known for disliking anything Microsoft.
Actually Engadget review was more favorable to Lumia 900 than Verge review.
If you write Engadget on a piece of paper, then hold it in front of a mirror, and angle it just so...it will say. ... Enohpi

No doubt it was the worst review. He likes the hardware for the most part, but slams the WP7 os, giving the os a lower score than when they reviewed the 800. Just confirms to me that Topolsky really is a MS hater. Some of his complaints sound like a typical Android fanboy, classics such as 'single core cpu' and 'low resolution screen'.

Just watched it and it definitely looks like he wanted to take an opportunity to say how much he doesn't like the Windows Phone OS. That's fine if he doesn't like it but shouldn't he be reviewing the phone and how it works with the OS? Definite biased review - like he really didn't even want to use the phone because it has WP on it.
Everyone has opinions, and he's entitled to his. He doesn't like it, and its his job to share his opinion. My son tried windows phone, then went back to android. He sounded like this guy. He could pick things out...this and that, and did not consider the overall experience. Thats fine. There are lots of things to love in android, and lots of things to love in Windows phone. Pick what works for you.

I was just reading the CNET review.
One of the strange things I saw in the Engadget review was the comment, I won't fit in your pocket...or something like that. I thought that was a strange thing to say. For those obviously looking for something to hang on to..yeah...its bigger. But...the way he said it..like somebody else said...it was obvious he didn't even want to do the review.
Anyway...the CNET review uses...get this...the Cyan 900 half in, half out of the pocket. I had to laugh...scared the cat, who knocked by bowl of cereal off my desk. Which gives me just another reason to not watch ENiphoneGADGET reviews anymore.

Actually, this review does nothing of the sort. You have a guy, who obviously does not even want to touch the phone, doing a review that searches for anything nice to say. According to him, this phone is a bottom dweller and he needs to disinfect his hands, immediately.
Thats not to say the camera is in deed good. I've heard good, I've heard bad. Persoanlly I use a camera phone for quick shots, and only 1 time in my many phones has a camera on a phone not been good enough for that...the Dell Venue Pro. Otherwise...I've been good. Of course my expectations do not include front cover Vogue shots.
The Verge review was unbelievably biased. I had hoped for more from that site after they picked up Tom Warren, but no luck. Just as lame as Engadget.
I think the worst I read was on Pocketnow. I don't event think the reviewer ever used the phone. He used a stock photo of 2 iPhones to compare the screen resolution.
With so many android phones out there, most of the sites do cater to android and apple...as they should. Most hard core android users have nothing good to say about wp or apple. Most apple users have nothing good to say about android or wp. They simply don't realize they lose their credibility by acting unbiased.
With hundreds of thousands of androids being registered everyday, I wonder why any other phone is ever going to be released.
All but the most hardcore of users fail to realize the lack of quality hardware and software wise on an android phone. Hardcore users can mod and tweek and do this and that...I used to be because they can...but now I lean towards because they have to.
I had the pleasure of working for a company that tested windows phones before the original release. I was majorly disappointed. I came to realize later that dissapointment was because my expectations were too high. I was looking for shooting stars and glitzy this and that. What MS focused on was pure reliablity. After a year I reset my expectations and the Windows Phone, IMO, is far superior than other phones. It works every time. I came back to the HD7 and Dell Venue Pro, moved to the Samsung Focus S and now on to the Lumia 900. I have not been disappointed yet. I've adjusted my expectation to the WP and use the People tab, and Messaging Hub and think of these things as the better way. My daughter just converted to the Lumia 710 from android...why....because of reliability. My son is still on android after trying WP...but he's a modder.
So I watch these reviews and laugh....every review they say this is their favorite phone ever....uh huh...why...cause their last favorite got to have android phone doesn't work any more....oh well...must be a verizon customer.

This time's 1000+. The majority of my friends are not tech heads. They just want their devices to work. The ones who have gone to WP7 have all said the same thing - they love it. Its quick, easy to use, and looks good. They could care less about modding or skinning their phones, or how many cores it has, how much ram, or the screen resolution.
When it comes to WP7, MS should really steal Apple's moto of 'it just works', and it works well.
I must've read 10+ reviews since they all came out last night. The overall response is positive. I think Verge and Engadget had the harshest reviews comparing apps and camera quality to the 4s and Nexus.
2 things I don't care much about. None of the bad reviews have me second guessing my decision to switch from my iPhone 4.
Can't wait till the 9th!

I read all of these reviews today and they really got off topic of the Device and got on the OS. So I took it upon myself to Tweet both Verge and engadget to see what the Lumia 900 has to do, to be as good as Android or iOS. The things they gripped about such as the third party apps lagging, same thing that happens on iOS and Android so that argument isnt valid. Of course I didnt get a reply from them. I agree the OS is missing some things but the device funtions well and does what its suppose to do.
And IM SICK AND TIRED of people bashing WP for not having multi Cores, if anything it should show everyone that you dont need multi cores to operate well. They tend to bash the specs but WP functions just as fast as any other OS but with lower specs. Most people dont even care about specs as long as it works well and does what its suppose to.

Thanks for posting the link to the PhoneDog review. It was definitely positive and he compared it to other phones and operating systems and based his review on the phone itself while pointing out how the WP OS works.
You guys are right that it's like TheVerge and Engadget reviewer's did as little as they could to explore around the phone and know how to use the OS. All I got from them was "The Lumia 900 is a nice phone but man do we hate this OS. So we overall the score is a 5 out of 10". I can't believe they get paid to be lazy.
I went to a Behind the Tiles event last night in Minneapolis. About 20 people showed up, and there were 10-15 MS employees on hand. Needless to say there was pleanty of oportunity to talk to MS employees one on one and ask very specific questions. The people who presented / made themselves readily available were very knowledgable.
Most attendees were WP7 users already: Just about 1/2 were developers, the other 1/2 were in IT/IS in one capacity or another or at least a technology enthusiast. It was not a developer-oriented event (JIC you didn't know...)
If you're new to windows phone then this is a very good event to see the features demonstrated. Even after 1.5 years of being on the OS I still learned quite a bit about application features (pinning is more detailed than I've been using, integration with areas of the OS where the appropriate apps are located), and a very good demonstration of Bing, which has a TON more features than I've been using.
Everyone had a Nokia 900 provided to play with (focus on Me tile, setting up, etc.), and for Bing we were able to execute translations, scan pictures with the camera for text which we then sent in an e-mail, playing music on the phone and having Bing display the artist and where to buy the albumn / song, and focused a lot on voice commands and how to simply talk to your phone w/out pushing any buttons. It was pretty cool, actually. One thing that stuck out in my mind was that the malls in Bing Maps have detailed floor maps (complete with store names) that I didn't know existed, which was nice to see. They also showed how to filter results from Bing search easily.
In addition, they demoed some future tech (XBox, Kinect, and WP working together), talked about Win8 and WP8 a little (very little, but at least it was direct) and focused one of the sections on business use (also very enlightening).
At the end they gave away an NL 900, 2 StarWars XBox units, and 4,000 gamer points. Given the people there, it was a 1/5 chance to win one of those (of course, I didn't win anything =) ). Not sure if those are given out at each event, so YMMV - that's what they had to offer last night. Oh, and light swag (notebook, I <3 Win Phone stickers, etc.).
Lastly, BestBuy offered $50 off the $99 Lumia 900 if you were eligible, so It's a good way to save a buck or two if that's of interest.
If you were on the fence I recommend signing up - it was worth my time for sure!

Cool. Nice to hear. Thanks for sharing !!
I would love to attend something like that. I have been using Lumia for a week and wants to love it, but i always have a feeling that it missing a lot. I would really like to explore Bing features more as IMO it should be given more credit.

No doubt! I was suprised at how much I didn't know! Here's a couple of links that may help to see the functionality of Bing:

I would love to go to one as well. I think the one in ny happened already. I'm gonna have to check it out soon.

There are lots of these resources online if you look for them. When attending an event with Microsoft, they throw this in your face. But most of it is already available. Check out the Windows Phone Blog sites, and the Windowsphone.com sites for info.....lotttssss there.
i was there too

Funny, I was sure it was an AT&T device (it has an AT&T logo on it, doesn't it?) so they should have it! I know this sounds pretty dumb... but did you ask them to try again? =)
Grats on the phone, too!
They are having these events at best buys throughout may but in order to go you have to RSVP with a registration code. Did you have that? I don't know how I would get one.

I used 'MVP', and I saw one other but hopefully that one will still work.

It worked perfectly. Thank you so much for the response. I appreciate it. I registered for an event in NYC on the 9th. I'll be back here afterwards to let you guys know how it went.

Went to one on 14May in San Diego. They changed the venue from Best Buy to the Microsoft store. A lot of interesting features were brought up & WOOHOO.... I won one of the Lumias. They gave away teeshirts, 2 lumia 900s, 2 Star Wars XBox Kinects and 2 4000 pt. XBox cards
So the event I went to was ok. I learned one or two things. They had three different stations set up and we walked in a circle hitting each. There are no seats so we were standing for the duration of the 2.5 hour event which was a bit uncomfortable seeing that I had just worked the whole day. They I didn't win any prizes though.
Seems like they gave way more stuff away at the event held at the Microsoft store. I got a bag with a sticker, pen, notebook and a poster.
