Help with an Incredible 2 that is Acting Strange - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I picked up an Droid Incredible 2. The phone does not appear to be rooted. It is in S-On mode. The phone does not want to reception at all and frequently freezes. It is running Android 2.3.4 and software version 5.10.605.9. I have tried a factory reset and it still doesn't help.
Is it possible to manually download the latest firmware / software update for the phone and install it via the SD card?
Any suggestions or tips on how to get this phone back up and running properly?
Thanks!

have you tried to update the prl?
Sent from my Sabotaged Droid Incredible 2.

Can you point me in the right direction on how to update the prl? Sorry, I am a noob when it comes to Droids. Thanks for the help.

Sorry about that....I did a little home work on the prl. I did not know that this was the preferred roaming list. I thought it had something to do with the software on the phone. I have a strong Verizon signal on my iPhone and absolutly no signal on the Droid. I have tried going outside with the Droid and still nothing. I have plenty of Verizon towers around me to get a signal.

Gain root, wipe, install a custom ROM, and hope you didn't buy a defective phone.

Hehe that was going to be my next suggestion. Also, just because the iPhone gets a signal that doesn't mean anything.
Sent from my Sabotaged Droid Incredible 2.

I feel like an idiot. I had the back of the phone of to get the ESN number off of the phone to activate it online. I didn't realize that the back needed to be on to get reception. Doesn't explain why the phone kept locking up on me though.

the constant search for a signal may cause that and possibly having the back off could too.

Wipe everything and do factory reset, there still could be traces of previous stuff on there causing it to freeze and sruff

Random reboots

My Evo has been acting up lately. It randomly reboots at least 10-20 times a day. I thought it was probably an app causing the reboots so I wiped my phone and still does this. It especially doesn't like to stay on with the Navi on. It started on Myns RLS 4 and after flashing Fresh 3.5 and still does this. I've tried flashing different kernels from stock to Netarchys to kings to ziggys to alleviate this issue. I've even resorted to flashing the stock rom and kernel combo but no go. HW version 0002, latest radios, latest PRI, running Fresh 3.5, with Nets 4.19 CFS nohavs. Anybody running similar combos with the same problems please let me know what I could do to fix this issue other than to unroot and go to Sprint for a new Evo.

No fix because its a hardware problem unrest install a ruu and return it.

Yep, get it back to "normal" and take it in. Mine was in the same boat, it wouldn't reboot if I just let the phone sit there but once I launched the browser or navigation it would just reboot. Then it started boot looping. Maddening. Sprint was cool and seems like most haven't had issues returning / receiving with this issue.
I was hoping it was a software issue. I've had this phone since launch day and has been rooted since I got it. No problems until a couple of days ago. Looks like I'm going to have to unroot and return to stock so I can try to get another Evo from Sprint. I hope Sprint doesn't try to jerk me. Thanks guys

How'd you do that. Only problem I'm foreseeing is replicating the reboots. It hasn't randomly rebooted as of 11 am today. I made sure to talked to Sprint tech support so they can document my problem. As soon as I get home I'm unrooting and going to stock. Tech Guy told me Sprint repair center should just swap my phone the same day

HAH one guy tried to get me out of there, I left my phone there for 2 hours and they couldn't get it to reboot. They gave me a new battery and said that was the problem. LOL I got it to reboot in two minutes in front of him. Suffice to say that was that. Be polite but firm.

So finally after taking my phone to a 3rd party repair center, raising hell with Sprint, and taking it to a corporate store I got my new Evo. First store I took it to were no help. Told me my phone had liquid damage without even opening my phone, I never dropped it in water or exposed it to water. Called Sprint and customer service was no help, call got escalated to customer priority service next day and they told me to take it into a corporate store. Tech reset my phone and my phone still randomly rebooted in the Store so they had to give me a replacement phone. New phone was a version 0003 and had the radio and rom that shipped on launch date. Rooted my phone and installed Flipz's rom with net's kernel immediately after getting home. Problem free since. I noticed that new phone uses a different panel. Screen seem to look more natural in terms of color. Previous Evo had a screen that was unusually bright and had light leakage around the capacitive buttons. Battery life is fantastic for some reason because I was running the exact same setup previously and I was getting around 9-12 hours on a full charge. I'm getting between 12-17 hours between charges in the past 5 days I've had this replacement phone.

you think they have actually taken the time to take EVERY single refurb and update them instead of just NOT doing it and having the phone force the update upon activation?

That's the point of a refurb though, to be brand new so to speak. so it will 9/10 be updated software.
I got my fascinate to inc2 switch with a refurbished on wed last week and it came with 2.2. Just a fyi.

It is a mixed bag with refurbished versions. I currently have a little screen separation going on but I am dealing with it because I don't want to lose root or get stuck in Verizon refurbish hell.

no one can say for sure.
Mines left yesterday, should be getting it Thursday or Friday, so i hope it still have 2.2. I too think it's a roll of the dice, because they would literally have to replace ALL the phones, it would be better to just let the user update it, but we will see.
This was an issue back when I had the Eris, and I needed a refurb, and the same thing, I tried asking before they sent it out and they said that it's most likely going to be sent with the updated software, if it a refurb..
I have to ask. I see so many people on here saying they got the DInc 2 from a Fascinate (Same thing I'm doing now) so I'm sure you are all familiar with the Fascinate. How come there isnt anything like the stock ODIN files that can be used on a Fascinate?
Because Samsung and HTC have totally different ways of debugging/developing and use different tools. The Eris is the same way, with S-OFF and all that jazz with the bootloader. IMO the Odin App made recovering from meltdowns and updating things like the radio VERY easy which was nice. But for some reason this simplicity also led to MORE bricks as all it took for a while to brick your phone was to hit the dreaded phone button instead of the "PDA" button in Odin...

I already miss Odin. It was so ridiculously easy to do anything with it. You didn't even need to root to flash a custom rom. Just Odin CWM, boot directly into it, and flash the rom. And very easy to go back to stock and not leave a trace of root. Unlike the current inability to go back to S-On...

[Q] S-off without usb?

While trying to flash the new rcmix3d rom I encountered an error while trying to flash it. Someone came to the conclusion that it was the hboot version I was using and recommended I upgrade it.
I took the advice and upgraded hboot to the latest 2.16, flashed the rom and finally gave me no error. The rom booted up but I realized while trying to get rid of bloatware after every reboot it would all come back.
Checked Hboot and apparently I lost my s-off, which I didn't know was gonna happen. So now I'm back to s-on, still have my ra 2.3 recovery, and apps are still able to establish root within the rom.
Problem is I want to get my s-off back but from what I've read you have to have ur phone connected and use adb but the usb port of my evo broke a while ago. Is there any other way I can get s-off back? How about using adb wireless? Any help is appreciated.
That's pretty wierd... but no you will need to use the USB cable. The computer needs to be able to reboot your phone to boot loader and a few other things so the wireless adb won't work since the rom isn't booted up during 75% of the root process. Best bet would be either be trying to wiggle your USB cord in your phone till it connects and re-root or run an ruu from your SD and get back to 100% stock and take it to sprint for a replacement. Since your USB port is considered a manufacturer defect they will give you a refurb for $35. I would know since my evo bit the dust on Christmas and got a refurb yesterday.

My usb port is just completely broken it just moves around everywhere. I actually tried going in to a sprint store about my usb port and they completely just told me to file an insurance claim even though I said it was considered a manufacture defect. I might try again though, you've given me a little bit of hope. lol

That's worse than I thought...so if I at one point wanted to switch to twrp I wouldn't be able to? I mean I have ra 2.3 right now and I'm quite satisfied so I don't think ill be trying to switch. Not being able to flash some roms is really a big let down. I need to get this USB port fixed.

There's a glitch with the e4gt that I think was the issue with Los

Ok so whenever I reset my ram with task manager my radio crashes and when it comes back on it says roaming then jumps back to Sprint service. It also happens when using ##3282# wether I go to edit or view clicking on evdo will crash the radio. It did this on every build since I got the phone. Its nothing major like b4 when rebooting was the only way to get back in service. Just wanted to point it out bcuz I know its not normal and never experienced it with the og epic.

Its not a glitch that is supposed to happen. When u clear the RAM it stops all apps and processes from running. That us why that happens. Actually that was used to help get rid of LOS rather than rebooting cause it resets the radio.

Ok but why does it do it when accessing ##3282# and clicking on evdo from both the edit and view option? Also mind you it did this on my EG30 firmware when I got the phone. I disagree for the simple fact my phone always did this from day one. Clearing my ram always crashed my radio on eg30 so how is that new? Don't get me wrong I believe they did find a way for the phone to not have to reboot when it happens, but that right there is not it. Its a hardware flaw..

Clearing apps and ram from the built in task manager does not, and never has, crashed the radio on my phone.

I got my phone about three months ago approximately. It must of had eg baseband on it because it immediately updated to ek02. I don't know if what I think Los is, is actually what it is. I thought it was, when you woke up the phone, you would discover that the 3g and bars were gone and replaced with a circle with a slash through it. Am I mistaken?

Ok that's good to know. I got the phone on December and I never got one either. However I did experience the no signal popping up whenever I shut the phone off every once in a while. Never happened again after I upgraded to ek02. I'm just trying to get some info b4 I decide to go to Sprint and swap it out.. I have both phones, and both perform the same way. As have the hundreds that I've troubleshot in the last three years at my store.
Sounds like you have heard your answer countless times, your just looking for feedback that follows what you want, not the actual facts.
Its not a crash. It will show a crossed out circle, flash connecting to voice(the 1x icon), and reconnect to 3G. If it isn't reconnecting, you have an issue. But, it will always reset.

1st I'll start off by saying two people already said they don't have this issue in this thread. 2nd how those the 1x icon show before reconnecting to 3g when Sprint disables the 1x from all their 4g phones from showing. And lastly I am glad you experienced the same behavior on all the phones you've worked on. I however didn't have that same experience. Anyways I already spoke to my friend (who works at a Sprint store) and he assured me his doesn't do it and if I would like I can come in to the store so he can order me a new one. Which I will do...
Edit: PS how dare you say all phones do it when I have my first epic 4g in my face and it is not doing this? Smh

[Q] Stock issues

i work in the sprint store and in the past few days we have gotten at least 4 people with an epic touch still running gingerbread (with no option to update to ics) having issues with the bottom buttons not responding, touch screen acting weird, vibration activating sporadically, and with one case the media scanner runs in a loop. the only way to solve these issues have been to factory reset. but could only be temporary. the customers havnt returned. these issues have not just been happening on older devices but recent activation's.
is this a common issue? is there a fix? (without rooting!) we are a sprint store. we cant promote that lol
Well, couldn't you use the one click ek02, no data, which isn't rooted, and then let the ota process take the phone back to el29?
EK02 thread is here.
It would be stock, unrooted and you wouldn't be losing data.
Worth a try before a factory reset anyway..
Only thing I can think of since you don't want to root, then unroot..

We can't do that. This is a sprint store and we are very limited on what we can do. So far factory resets have done the trick. We haven't gotten anyone back sense but we also told them it wasn't normal and that if the problems returned that they should take it to a repair center to have repaired or replaced.
It really sucks though. I wish I could manually flash these peoples phones but I'm not allowed
