While trying to flash the new rcmix3d rom I encountered an error while trying to flash it. Someone came to the conclusion that it was the hboot version I was using and recommended I upgrade it.
I took the advice and upgraded hboot to the latest 2.16, flashed the rom and finally gave me no error. The rom booted up but I realized while trying to get rid of bloatware after every reboot it would all come back.
Checked Hboot and apparently I lost my s-off, which I didn't know was gonna happen. So now I'm back to s-on, still have my ra 2.3 recovery, and apps are still able to establish root within the rom.
Problem is I want to get my s-off back but from what I've read you have to have ur phone connected and use adb but the usb port of my evo broke a while ago. Is there any other way I can get s-off back? How about using adb wireless? Any help is appreciated.
That's pretty wierd... but no you will need to use the USB cable. The computer needs to be able to reboot your phone to boot loader and a few other things so the wireless adb won't work since the rom isn't booted up during 75% of the root process. Best bet would be either be trying to wiggle your USB cord in your phone till it connects and re-root or run an ruu from your SD and get back to 100% stock and take it to sprint for a replacement. Since your USB port is considered a manufacturer defect they will give you a refurb for $35. I would know since my evo bit the dust on Christmas and got a refurb yesterday.

My usb port is just completely broken it just moves around everywhere. I actually tried going in to a sprint store about my usb port and they completely just told me to file an insurance claim even though I said it was considered a manufacture defect. I might try again though, you've given me a little bit of hope. lol
Can anyone tell me what benefits do I lose by having s-on? Looks like I'm stuck like this so I'd like to know what ill lose. I know now I can't get rid of bloatware with titanium backup and that sucks and I can't update Su binary anymore, but what else?

That's worse than I thought...so if I at one point wanted to switch to twrp I wouldn't be able to? I mean I have ra 2.3 right now and I'm quite satisfied so I don't think ill be trying to switch. Not being able to flash some roms is really a big let down. I need to get this USB port fixed.

you think they have actually taken the time to take EVERY single refurb and update them instead of just NOT doing it and having the phone force the update upon activation?

That's the point of a refurb though, to be brand new so to speak. so it will 9/10 be updated software.
I got my fascinate to inc2 switch with a refurbished on wed last week and it came with 2.2. Just a fyi.

It is a mixed bag with refurbished versions. I currently have a little screen separation going on but I am dealing with it because I don't want to lose root or get stuck in Verizon refurbish hell.

no one can say for sure.
Mines left yesterday, should be getting it Thursday or Friday, so i hope it still have 2.2. I too think it's a roll of the dice, because they would literally have to replace ALL the phones, it would be better to just let the user update it, but we will see.
This was an issue back when I had the Eris, and I needed a refurb, and the same thing, I tried asking before they sent it out and they said that it's most likely going to be sent with the updated software, if it a refurb..
I have to ask. I see so many people on here saying they got the DInc 2 from a Fascinate (Same thing I'm doing now) so I'm sure you are all familiar with the Fascinate. How come there isnt anything like the stock ODIN files that can be used on a Fascinate?
Because Samsung and HTC have totally different ways of debugging/developing and use different tools. The Eris is the same way, with S-OFF and all that jazz with the bootloader. IMO the Odin App made recovering from meltdowns and updating things like the radio VERY easy which was nice. But for some reason this simplicity also led to MORE bricks as all it took for a while to brick your phone was to hit the dreaded phone button instead of the "PDA" button in Odin...

I already miss Odin. It was so ridiculously easy to do anything with it. You didn't even need to root to flash a custom rom. Just Odin CWM, boot directly into it, and flash the rom. And very easy to go back to stock and not leave a trace of root. Unlike the current inability to go back to S-On...

100% agree. Someone needs to dev a way to do that for this phone.
I have had my evo for about 6 months. About a month ago I noticed none of my computers were able to recognize my phone any longer. I decided to just use FTP for transferring files. the other day however, my wall charger stopped working. I now have to wiggle it around until its in just the right spot to charge. My phone is rooted with custom rom etc. What should I do about this? Take it to sprint or mail it to HTC?
This is not damage from anything I have done, so I really don't want to pay $100
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Either place you'll get a refurb.
Good thing about htc is that youll get your housing back, just a new board. You can either throw a stockish rom on there or unroot it. Its a matter of opinion on which should be done.

Will both charge me 100$ most likely? A friend told me HTC might not charge me.
I can just flash a stock rom without having to unroot? I also have a custom bootsplash.

I just did mine with HTC for free because I didn't think i would get a refurb. sprint will also be free if you have tep.
I would advise fully unrooting for HTC.

Same problem, seems to happen to quite a few people. I don't feel like wasting my time sending it in, and just use a wall battery charger, along with 2 Anker 1700 batteries, so I always have one charged at all times, its easy to switch the new when when needed. I like it much better than having to have the phone connected to a charger, I never worry about that now. Two Anker 1700, and two stock OEM batteries, and Ankers seem to get quite a few more hours of life, amazing boost for such a cheap price for two batteries and a external battery wall charger.
What would be the easiest way to unroot in your opinion? I don't remember the method I used to get root.
That's a great idea about the batteries and external charger. I will definitely keep that as an option. Thanks.

Your unroot method depends on the method you used to root. If you go to the bootloader and it says revolutionary at the top and you have hboot 6.16 then you s-offed with revolutionary. If you have s-off with hboot 2.16 or lower you used unrevoked

It looks like I used unrevoked as my hboot is lower than 2.16. Should I follow this guide? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151733
Or is their a more up to date method?
I had the same issue. I went with the spare battery and wall charger route myself. seemed easier than unrooting and using insurance. being this way for 6 months now, and its really not an inconvenience. just gotta change the battery once a day.

Yeah just download and flash the s on tool zip in recovery and download the PC36IMG.zip to the root of your sd card and then boot into the bootloader and let it update that PC36IMG.zip
Reboot and then power off and back on while holding volume down and check to make sure your s on. That should be it.

Trying to get back to stock before taking my epic in to sprint. Here's what's up.
I got a refurbished epic 4g when my screen cracked. It worked well at first flashed over to cm9 and atarashi kernel. Since then my usb port started acting up sometimes it thinks its charging constantly other times never says it charging. Booting into download mode and plugging in to the computer it doesn't connect. And yes I am using a non stock cable (blackberry cable).
I've also tried to restore to a backup in case it was the new kernel version still doesn't work.

Try reinstalling your drivers, use different ports, and different cables. I had to do the same thing yesterday when my screen had water damage. They probably wont notice if you take it in and i think they wipe anyway, but keep trying to odin just in case. Maybe try heimdall too.

If you can't get it working flash the FC09 stock deodexed MTD ROM here:

There are instructions at the bottom of the OP to make it look stock enough to fool most Sprint techs. Marcusant has a kernel for it that has the stock numbers in the version that shows up on settings. PM him or me if you need that.
Alright I'll try that hopefully they don't notice. If they do well hopefully they don't say anything cause its a hardware issue obviously. Just a poorly refurbished phone.

kris, most likely you have a dirty usb port, take a qtip, dip it into alcohol and gently clean the port and then use a hair dryer for a few secs and then give it a try.

I don't think they'd notice. They either don't know or don't care and if the service center is in the back, they probably won't even look at it before they reset.

I bought a new USB cable that was supposed to work for data/sync and charging for my phone. It worked fine as a charging cable, but my PC did not detect my phone's USB connection so I can't access my sdcard or get into Fastboot or Flashmode. When trying to get into Fastboot, I see a very brief blue blip, but that's all. Flashmode doesn't turn green at all.
I have tried this now on 2 different PCs with several different cables that have worked OK previously and have not had any updates done to them. On a third PC, I'm able to connect to the USB port and access the sdcard, but Fastboot and Flashmode still are not detected. I thought I had read something about this problem before, but I've not found any answers. Is this something that Alejandrissimo might be able to fix, or is it strictly a hardware issue and insurance time? I am able to return the phone to a stock, unrooted state if need be.
I would return it to stock state and see if that fixes it. I remember reading about a similar issue once. I too will try to find it and see if there was a solution.

Nope - It was actually a failing/failed USB port. I took it to Best Buy and sent it off for repair/replacement and have a loaner phone to use until it comes back in later this week.

Flashing a stock 4.3 restore will return your phone to original (stock) ROM and kernel, un-root, reset your flash counter and install stock recovery. Once your warranty bit is tripped, however, there is no known method of resetting this. Unfortunately, with your LCD bust, you wouldn't be able to see what you are doing. You can only hope that since they wouldn't be able to see either ....

Looks like they are hardly consistent wit the warranty thing. I just saw a post from another guy who had exactly the same problem. Sent it to Telus and they declined claiming it was a physical damage not covered by warranty. I guess insurance works separately from the standard warranty. To be on the safe side, however, I just remembered I sometimes connect my i747 to an LED TV using a micro-USB to HDMI adapter. The adapter can be bought cheaply online and lets you use your TV or PC with HDMI as an image screen for your phone.

If I am not mistaken, you should be able to use the fastboot commands using ADB to flash things. He or she will need to have the packages he or she is needed to flash the 'fastboot' folder. He or she will also need the packages in order to do fastboot as well.
