[Q] Com Port when connected to PC? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have a program I am fiddling with called CDMA workshop which allows you to do...well pretty much anything to any CDMA phone you have connected to the PC, from reading/writing MSLs, lock codes, ESNs, PRLs, and a host of other stuff. Works easily with feature phones, but it requires you to put what com port the phone is using so it can connect to it. It's easy on feature phones, as soon as you connect it, the phone shows up under ports and tells you what it is using. However, when I connect a smart phone, an Epic Touch in my case, it doesn't show up under that. It only shows under USB controllers and ADB Device.
Does anyone know how to pull this up? Or do they not even use Com Ports?
Thanks in advance.

Connect it to Odin. It will tell you which Com port once it is connected.

Ok, second question: is there a way to change that port, through Odin or anything else, once you find it? This particular version of the software I'm using only recognizes com ports 1-10.

Try this:

It also depends on which USB port you plug into on the pc too mine ranges from com 0 - 3 depending on what port I'm in or if I use my hub

Notebook suddenly stopped recognizing my sgs

Hi there,
I flashed my sgs several times, but suddenly my sgs isn't recognized by my notebook anymore. I tried reinstalling my usb drivers, sgs drivers & Samsung Kies unfortunately with no result
When I connect my sgs I can see the battery charging, but I keep getting the message that my 'device' is unknown. Does anyone experience the same problem? And how can it be solved?
I tried another desktop but i'm facing the same problem there as well..
Furthermore I noticed another unusual thing; When I turn off my sgs and connect it to the notebook it turns itself on, while it only used to charge the battery before
I'm using the following software:
sgs: JM2 + root + mimocan lagfix
nb: windows 7 64-bit
Thanks in advance!
Jersr
*Ps: I'm sorry if my English is bad
that is a very strange problem, if it was only happening to one windows machine, then i'll say the USB port on the machine might be bad, but if 2 windows machine says the same problem, then it's something else
i hope it's not your SGS USB por that is damaged.
because that is the only time when windows will report "USB device unknown"
try turning off the windows machines, then turning it back on
sometimes windows 7 gets stuck in a stupid mode, where it wont accept new USB devices.
i have to reboot my windows 7 x64 machine every 2 weeks, because every now and then it will not recognize USB keys, HTC phone, or SGS phone, or whatever i happen to plug in.
then after reboot, it works right away.... windows is stupid
I tried a reboot several times, but it didn't help.. If the sgs usb port is the problem then why does it still charge the battery when connected?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Because charging doesnt requiere working drivers...
You should check if the phone is recognized in downloading mode if yes reflash with checked re partition than check again

stupid question but i have to ask the obvious:
settings->about phone->usb settings
is set to the right option (mass storage, ...)?
I've already tried all the options in there

I had similar problems getting my computer to recognise my Galaxy S also. I was also unable to uninstall the Samsung Mobile Device Drivers for some reason so I deleted the drivers manually from <Windows>\system32\Drivers. Here are the steps I took:
1) Delete all Samsung drivers from <Windows>\system32\Drivers.
2) Control Panel -> Programs and Features
3) Uninstall Kies
4) Uninstall the Samsung Mobile Device Drivers.
5) Reboot PC (leave your phone unplugged).
7) Reinstall Kies (it should take longer than usual to install as the drivers will be reinstalled).
8) Close Kies and the tray icon.
9 Open Odin.
10) Boot the phone into download mode (Hold Volume Down + Home + Power).
11) Plug in your phone into your PC.
12) If the PC doesn't immediately recognise the phone (it didn't for me), go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager, then from the menu select Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
This should cause your PC to recognise the Galaxy S, reinstall the Samsung Component Device and Samsung Mobile Modem drivers and Odin should recognise the device. At this point you can setup Odin with the PIT, Code, Phone and CRC files and flash as per usual.
had a similar problem. i just activated the debug mode on the phone under applications > development...then it recognized the phone....only had the problem after i rooted it......

How can i see what Samsung drivers are?
@hkmatt:
Entering the the USB debug mode will nog help
did you already try another usb cable? it is much more likely that your cable is broken than your usb port...
Yes, i tried but again no result
After that i got my sgs totally ruined, by resetting to factory settings in boot mode.
I thought that might help, but the only thing it gave me was fc's when I started the phone..
I just brought the phone back to the store and they said they'd repair it for free!
But will it still be for free when they see JM2 + root + lagfix
Well.. If it ain't, i'll still get my sgs back working again
Thanks to all of you guys who tried to help!

Probably a bit late now seems as you've sent the phone off. I can't guarantee this would have helped anyway. But for future reference...
It took a bit of investigation but I sorted the drivers by date of modification and then individually checked the manufacturer of the drivers (Properties -> Details). I can't remember but I believe they all started with "ss". However, they definitely weren't the only drivers to start with "ss" so I don't recommend deleting all drivers starting with "ss".
My solution to your problem is simple. I noticed whenever i pluged in my sgs certain usb devices started to fail. I figured that maybe sgs was sucking in more then say 300mw. Maybe it was sucking in 500 when it wasnt ment to. I only noticed this bug when i flashed certain roms and it always happens wheb i have root installed. Anyways simple fix, just buy a powered usb hub. Works for me

I've been monitoring the USB information sent to and from my phone and the PC. The phone requests power "25" which corresponds to 50 mA, beats my why the specification uses 2 mA units. The max provided by USB 2.0 is 100 mA so the power the phone is requesting/using is not at all an issue.

he is not talking about current but about power! i guess you know the difference?! P=U*I they used to beat that into my head
the issue could be that if you have other usb devices connected that the controller is not able to supply enough energy for all devices. if you don't have a active-powered usb-hub you should at least try to unplug all other usb devices and then connect your sgs....

I'm well aware that power is the product of voltage and current. However, USB ports only provide one voltage regardless of the situation or what device they're plugged into, they provide 5 V +/- 5%. As such the power provided by a USB port is defined entirely by the current that the device requests.
So the the device requests power "25", which corresponds to 50 mA, or ~250 mW.

lol, yeah but that was not my point! what i meant is that: MAYBE the usb controller can not supply enough energy for all devices attached to the several usb-ports it controlls. even if it should be able to give the 100mA*5.5V=550mW to all ports, a lot of controlles can't do that. i have had similar problems myself before. that's why i said: try do disconnect all other devices. most likely it won't help but after reading this thread i think you are desperate for ideas, or am i mistaken?

what drivers are you refering to? are you trying to access your USB storage inside the phone on your computer or what are you trying to do? which USB drivers are you refering to?
Connect to the computer with usb debugging disabled. It will install a driver, then unplug, enable usb debugging, and you should be able to see it with adb

I did actually, and Kies couldn't see the phone.
Also, the phone did not see a USB connection, though it was charging
per the documentation I tried to mount as mass storage device through Wireless and Networking. This didn't do anything either, phone still charges.
I had borrowed the USB cable from a co-worker, I had him plug it in to his phone, and it works just fine, just XP machine sees his phone.
Turns out, its something with the cable.
rummaging around for another cable, I noticed I had my XOOM and its cord with me. Its the same type, but its the Moto brand one (if that makes it any different?)
plugged it in instead just for ****s and giggles. It works.
Phone just doesn't like his cable for whatever reason.
Now Win7 sees the phone, and Kies sees it (doesn't like the debugging mode but whatever)
His cable was an LG branded one. Any one know if there's something different?
I've tested 2 LG branded usb cables and they do not work. Same thing you described.
I found it in pull it out half way the phone recognizes USB and the computer sees the phone but if I try to transfer files I get a "device disconnected" error... Or something like that. I can see the files, just can't touch 'em.
I could not believe that the cable is have been using on tons of devices for years wouldn't work only on this one. I'd sooner believe it was the computer. So I grabbed a coworkers much newer LG branded cable and same thing... I still didn't believe it after testing 2 cables on 3 computers... Though I had a hunch from the first second I plugged it in I still can't believe it... And then I read this.
Explanation please, lol.

I downloaded Kies as well, and it did install a driver called "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device", but I don't think this is what I need (trying to root).
Whenever I open Odin w/ the phone connected, no COM port mapping number displays...
Using the USB cable that came w/ the phone.
Deleted original post.

Have you considered getting your USB adapter/port checked for issues? It could be possible that the adapter no longer has the ability to send data, but only charges the E4GT when connected; try using another USB port on your computer.

I have three computers here and none of them are working with it --- and the weirdest thing that I just noticed === it seems like its just showing the charging animation... I left it plugged into my computer when it was supposedly charging, screen turned off, check back in 20 minutes and it had gone down by 20% --- it's just like its triggering the charging animation
If your phone will charge but won't transfer data, there is a strong possibility it is actually a problem with the cable. I tested 3 LG micro-usb cables which all worked fine with an LG phone, but would not transfer data with the Epic 4G Touch. The would only charge. I thought my USB port was busted at first also because I tried 3 different cables and this is the first time I've encountered a situation where micro-usb cables were not universal.

[Q] Weird USB Problem.. SGH-T999

"This device can perform faster" note when I plug my device to the laptop.
Tested with no help:
- Two similar devices connecting without a problem. (Bought together)
- All ports tested on 2 different computers.
- all *#7284# "qualcomm usb settings".
- MTP mode and PTP (camera) mode.
- USB debugging On and Off.
I'm pretty hopeless..
Could this be a hardware problem?
The device is 3 months old.
Adroid 4.1.1
What should I try?
Thanks.
There is not really any "Problem". What's happened is that you plugged a USB2 (or faster) into a USB1 port.
In plain english, your computer might just be a little older, and not have all the faster stuff that newer pc's have.
If you plug in a older USB Device, it would work with no problem and no message.
If you plug in a newer USB2 device (it runs 2X faster than USB1) it will show you that message, but the device will still work fine, except it will be slower than if you had plugged it in a USB2 slot.
If your Computer is older, it might be a benefit for you to get it updated, if there is software available via Microsoft Updates.
If it's XP that's running, you could benefit using the Service Pack2 or Service Pack3 updates.
It may also be that your hardware is going as fast as it possibly can, and cannot go any faster. Bottom line is, it'll work fine so don't worry.
Aloha!

Why you asking again?
I have a new motherboard with both usb 2 and 3...I get the same message. How old is the laptop? If your laptop has usb 3 try that. Also go to google and type that usb notification and see what people say about it.

[Q] No option for usb(mtp or ptp)

When I plugin the S3 (Sprint non rooted) I no longer get the option for mtp or ptp. I suspect it may have happened after updating to 4.1.2. Ive tried multiple pcs and usb cables. To make it even worse, it works on my note 2 for sprint. Any help is something
I don't have my phone hooked up to my computer at the moment, so this might be a little vague.
I've had this happen a number of times. Plug your phone into the computer via USB and go into the Windows Device Manager (assuming you're running Windows) and uninstall the driver for your phone. Look for something like "Samsung Android Phone" or something like that.
If there is an option to delete the driver DO NOT delete it, since we want don't want to remove it from the computer.
After it's uninstalled, unplug your phone from USB and then plug it in again. Windows should do its automatic driver thing, and hopefully you'll be back in business.
Hopefully this helps. Good luck!
Also make sure you turn usb debugging off prior to connecting the phone.

If you have drivers installed and is still not working go to your dialer and do ##diag# click cdma then use setting make sure it's set to mtp + adb

This is what it should look like after you hit "Qualcomm USB setting"
