I took off my t-mobile screen protector yesterday and to day discovered a deep scratch on the "gorilla glass"...
To be very clean. Im very very verrrryy careful with my electronics and never damaged any in anyway! But its how how people say you can stratch it with keys or pens or put it in a bad with bolts and screws and the glass wont be scratched.
It false advertisement because i had my vibrant in an empty pocket fresh dry cleaned too! no dust and anything inside to cut it.
I had many average phones where i only got a tiny scratch on the screen from the phone falling from my hand after 2yrs of use and landing on concrete...
its funny how this glass gets scratched up very deeply without being dropped or scrapped at! and its a scratch for sure because when i move my thumb on it pressed i can feel the sharp line of the scratch on my thumb
Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, maybe only euro galaxy S phones have the gorilla glass... because this sure doesnt!
So for those who want to go naked!!! DOOOOOONT! buy a screen protector!
man... although a simple glass wont scratch with nothing in your pocket..

I've been using my vibrant for about three weeks now and have no scratches, only some marks on the battery cover.
The samsung vibrant does indeed have gorilla glass. Just because it has gorilla glass doesn't mean its un -scratchable. It just means it's more resistant than regular glass...if you don't mind me asking...what did you have in your pockets? A machete? A light saber?!...I kid, I kid...the morale of this story is, get a screen protector, prevent your vibrant from getting scathed by a light saber!

whether it has Gorilla glass or not, this is the FIRST phone that ended up with deep scratch only after a month of use.
I really dont care, i got it replaced and finally bought screen protector that i really like. (anti glare and anti fingerprint)
People should seriously invest into realook, it's only ten bucks and you won't even know it's on. But don't take my word for it or the other hundred posts here on xda that claim the same thing.

Have you seen any video's posted, I'm interested n anti-glare and anti-fingerprint but with the realooks you can't really tell its on style. I know, it's probably a lot to ask for.

with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint you will always tell that its there. i personally dont like reflective screens or screen protectors so my anti-glare and anti-fingerprint work great.
lol. this phone isn't fragile, you must have done something. no way the phone got scratched being in a pocket with nothing else in it. unless you walked that pocket into the corner of a desk or something...
my phone's been without screen protector or case since release with no scratches or blemishes.

+1 not a scratch.
Real Gorilla Glass takes alot to scratch. The ZuneHD is known to have the Gorilla Glass. My ZuneHD has been naked since the day I brought it and today it is still scratch free. It is possible our Samsung Vibrant does not have the Gorilla Glass as part of carrier modification to cu cost. who knows.

Interesting post...I'm actually a screen protector freak and have ordered multiple brands of screen protectors for the Vibrant (actually even Galaxy S just to try it...) so I'm all FOR screen protectors...best one so far is from Korea.
About your scratch...unless there's a scratch fairy, there is SOMETHING that caused that scratch. It may be foreign to you because you may not have known when it happened...It's highly possible someone else without your knowledge was the cause of it. Scratches just don't appear out of thin air...
Bottom line...the glass on the Samsung is solid...very solid...I've dropped my phone before so I know first hand how durable the glass is...it's some tough $#!t....

Its just the way of the world. If you put a screen protector on, soon after you take it off your will get scratched.
If you put it in a case, soon after you take it off you'll drop your phone. Call it karma, or just dumb luck, but it always seems to happen this way

If someone can do a key test we all can find out for sure
I've put this phones in my pocket with keys many times, dropped it several times, not a scratch yet. Whatever it's made of, it's pretty tough.

just to say this... like many people who were surprised by vibrant getting scratched so easily... Im on of them too! Because in theory if it has gorilla glass its suppose to be a lot tougher than average glass! I understand its not un-scratchable but it deff got scratched very easily being that i had nothing in my pockets! and that whenever it did recieve that scratch it wasnt from something really bad because i would of noticed it... since the phone is around me all the time!
So if any kind souls who believe this is a gorilla screen please demonstrate it for us on a video.... Take a key and scratch it the glass around and we'll see then....
I don't use a sp, but my phone still looks brand new.. No sp, no case, usually keep my phone in my pocket when walking around. Screen is still smooth a glass. Could samsung have used different materials depending on when it was built, kind of like the problem with the shortage if amoled screens?

I actually dropped my phone on one of those concrete roads in a way that send the phone sliding on the concrete several feet face down. All 4 corners of the phone's bezel show scratches but nothing on the screen itself.

I agree 100%!!!!
I put my first one on backwards and complained to them about not having standard directions. (You take the plastic covers off in reverse?) I did not read the instructions, but they still sent me three free new ones.

I would never personally do this, and a 3 dollar screen protector to protect the integrity of a very sweet piece of equipment, is a very small price to pay.
I just find it hard to believe that with only cloth surrounding it it got scratched. Not even lint in your pocket? I call BS

I know that the Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass, but does anyone know how scratch resistant the screen is? I have never used screen protectors, and don't really want to put one on my Nexus, but if the screen is easily scratched I might have to think about it. Any thoughts?

I have a Zagg Invisible Shield on mine. It's really nice... adds a bit of friction, but is just a minor learning curve.
I know how you feel OP. My previous two phones had Gorilla Glass I and never felt that I needed a screen protector. However, the coating on this screen does scratch fairly easily so I recommend picking one up. I just put an XO Skins screen protector on mine and I am loving it. You can't even tell it's there.
@sn0warmy: Thanks for this. When you say it scratches easily, just how easily? I tend to treat my phones pretty gently (i.e. never in the same pocket as keys etc), so do you think I still need a protector? Is the screen at all scratch resistant?

Yes, many people are getting scratches on their phones from just random dirt in their pockets.
It sucks...I've had Gorilla Glass phones in the past, that have been thrown like a baseball at cement walls that haven't scratched or chipped, not to mention never needing a screen protector.
With all my phones I have used an Otterbox Defender series while at work and a sunglass bag when off work, out and about. It works for me, I'm not too clumsy and I am fairly careful with my phone so no scratches for me. I don't know exactly why, but I dislike having to use a screen protector.
The GNex DOES HAVE fortified glass, it's just another type without the Gorilla name.

The GNex, while a great phone, does not have the gorilla glass that you've all come to know on other phones. It's bad, and your pocket might as well be sandpaper around it. Cover it up quickly with a screen protector. I speak from experience, my GSM version GNex got "mysteriously" scratched from one day to the next.
Now the question is: Which one? Zagg is leaving horizontal lines on my screen and is pissing me off, so that's out of the question.

This is all very strange to me, because I had my SGS for nearly a year, never used a case, tossed it in my handbag or hoody pocket with my keys all the time...it has no visible scratches.
I've had my Gnex since Christmas and it already has one deep scratch and also a "ding" in the glass, both of which can be felt if you run a fingernail across the defaced area. I have not been nearly as rough with it as I was with my SGS.
I know the plural of "anecdote" is not "data", but still, my Gnex now wears a screen protector, as much as I hate the bl**dy things. I'm also waiting anxiously for someone to come out with a protective case that I don't hate.

get some ghost armor, i hate screen protectors and im loving the protection from this product as so many people have had alot of scratching problems.

On the same data point, I've discovered that dry-application screen protectors are worthless on the Gnex because of the curved glass. I was afraid of the wet-application ones but I decided to try one (XO Skin) after going through 12 dry-application ones without getting a single one aligned and placed without enormous bubbles and peeling edges. I admit I suck at applying the dry ones but with the Gnex it seems pretty much impossible to do.
I consider myself to be gentle on my phones. That being said, I already have a couple small scratches in the glass that in my opinion would not have occurred with a higher grade of fortified glass. I am sure the screen curvature factors into the options they had. So what screen protector is most recommended that is invisible and does not increase friction?

I don't think there is one that's 100% drag-free, but the best one I've found is XO Skins....it doesn't have an orange peel texture, and the drag is only slight after you've broken it in a bit. When I first got mine I thought I wasn't going to be able to stand it because it was rubbery, but after two weeks of use it only feels slightly different to my SGS (which has bare GG).
Giving a quick review of the ArmorSuit Screen protector for the T-Mobile GSII SGH-T989. I got it from Amazon the other day for $9.00 and thought I would help out anyone seeking quality screen protection beyond the gorilla glass.

If you read the product description it will give you the rundown. I'll give you my opinions of it. First, the self healing claim is for the most part true. It scratched pretty bad when I was applying it but they all went away within a day. Installation was a breeze, just follow the instructions and watch the install video. I did find that at the top of the screen (where the front camera is) the protector just ends rather than going over the camera. I'm not sure if there is any benefit but it does seem like it will be a nuissance in the future because this is where it will start to peel (if anywhere.) Pictures are included.

Looks to be similar to the zagg. I have one too and I don't think it's that bad.
then again, I'm not that 'oily' as a person...
On the plus side, it looks a lot less orange peely than the zagg.

I haven't noticed anything beyond what the standard glass would have. If anything, I would say it is slightly more tacky but I'm sure that that will go away with time.
IMO you're putting plastic over glass.. Unless its in a car and its tinted its a waste.
They used to do it with TV's now TV's are being made with Gorilla glass.
Oils, smudges and so on..

This is incorrect. Plastic will protect the glass from any random things that would otherwise damage the glass. It is well understood by now that gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. By adding this plastic cover you increase the compression in which an object can penetrate before hitting the screen. This increases the time the object has to transmit it's energy into the phone and by using the formula for kinetic energy (KE=.5mv²) you will notice that it will lower the velocity of impact. This results in a compression which will lower the KE before whatever may scratch the screen actual scratches it, therefore concluding that the screen protector does protect the gorilla glass.

Either way, its like putting plastic around a bullet proof glass..
IMO they are not needed anymore at all. Keys,wallet clips, concrete will not scratch the gorilla glass, so anymore more than that is a catastrophic failure that no plastic will really help..
Either way, like I said, some people like to put ugly oil attractive plastic on their phones.. More power to them

Plenty of people have scratched their gorilla glass screens from everyday use such as putting the phone in the same pocket as keys or change. Google it.

I have..
But that argument doesn't really work because I can say Google the strength of Gorilla glass.
You will see people taking X-Acto knives to them.. People take hammers and so on..
I've had my evo for almost 2 years, with NO gorilla glass, never had a protector on it..
Tight jeans in pockets (retro, lol) with keys, with a METAL clip as a wallet, never NOT ONCE did it get a single scratch..
IMO it takes a lot! a real lot to scratch glass, GLASS, regular glass, not including Gorilla glass..
My evo did scratch though, riding on my bike at 25mph I dropped it like an idiot taking it out of its mount.. On the asphalt it dragged about 50 feet glass down.
Either way, plastic or not, it would of went right through a dinky piece of plastic.
Either way, I know some people want it, I just think its complete over kill and makes the phone feel/look weird..

actually i go through a lot of phones. I buy and resell gs2's all the time.. And the skyrocket.. I have to say. The glass does get scratched. out of 7 phones I've seen 5 of them scratched. It can only resist a scratch for so long. It might not be a deep scratch, but with the correct angle and lighting, you can see the scratches.

I'll take that as a compliment.
Any screen protector adds value, but it's pros vs cons.
Even Corning's CES videos show that gorilla glass is NOT scratch proof. Where? They sand blasted it in the circled area to show 'wear'. Personally I think it is easily enough to simulate without going to that extreme by using a decent grit sandpaper and rubbing it over the screen for a few minutes with moderate force.
I also like the tacky feeling the zagg adds, so I don't see a reason to not have a screen protector in addition to whatever proprietary strength glass is on it's face.
Looks impresive probably will get it.

Say that to my optimus v, have been using it for past year with no scratches and still going, sometimes i throw it at the floor with otterbox on and its like a bouncy ball. Nothing happend to it..... 3rd day on my galaxy s2 using it normally in the same pocket i had my optimus in and same exact jeans and it got scratched. Better be safe than have a phone that you won't like anymore.
For those who think Gorilla glass is scratch-free, try rubbing a few grains of beach sand on the screen. Come back tell me how you feel Ok!
Why not just keep one pocket dedicated to your phone and nothing else? I keep my phone in my front right pocket every single day and have never once scratched it... no stinking screen protector.
Since I have gotten the One X I have noticed that the screen seems to be oleophobic, because if I leave the phone alone for an hour all my fingerprint smudges are magically gone . To me this is a killer feature .
Is it really oleophobic or am I just crazy, because I can't seem to find anything about it online ?

Just checked mine, noticed the screen is indeed totally free of fingerprints for some reason while I never clean it. Didn't even notice it until now, nice!

warning: no finger oil makes it prone to scratches, this makes scratches as fast as 1 week vs 1 year using gorilla glass v1. I personally hate this absurd, it destroys my expensive toy 1000% faster

The microscratches are probably because the oleophobic coating is being scratched, rather than the glass.
mine has some but barley seen .

oleophobic will hold smudge, and it won't disappear
but it will get less smudge, and it will be easier to wipe it off.

i did sanding of the screen to check if i could wipe off scratches and oleophobic coating - oleophobic coating disappeared almost completely but the scratches are still there very deep in to the glass, hard particles could just glide on top of the glass if there was any oil for it, like the oil in car engine to protect engine from scratching itself, the oil that our skin is releasing to protect our skin from scratches
oleophobic coating is a big mistake, a big FAULT as faulty antenna in iphone 4 - technological fault that should be fixed by HTC at no charge, i want my gorilla glass back as i had in galaxy s after 1 year without any scratches not even tiny ones

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I started using a screenprotector because of all those horror stories about how
easy the screen scratches but I'm glad it's of again.
I'm one of the lucky people I ques who has a decent screen, no scratches what so ever

Sanding of the screen to get the scratches off?
Very deep scratches that didn't dissapear?
I'm sorry but I do not understand how people can have deep scratches if you keep your device in the pocket.
The only thing I can think of are keys and sand indeed.
If I take my device to the beach I'm very carefull, not only with HTC One X but with any device.
Actualy not only phones but name a device that is sand resistant?

oleophobic coating is a big mistake, a big FAULT as faulty antenna in iphone 4 - technological fault that should be fixed by HTC at no charge, i want my gorilla glass back as i had in galaxy s after 1 year without any scratches not even tiny ones

yes sanding using toothpaste is a method to remove scratches
I keep my HOX in HTC leather pouch, there was no keys or direct sand, environment was the same when i had my galaxy s, scratches came visible because i wanted less smudges and i wiped them off couple of times (thousands of times for the galaxy s), so there is like 100% chance i did finger cleaning my galaxy s with tiny hard particles on my fingers and scratches never appeared after a year but it did scratched my HOX in first week thanks to the oleophobic, by the way i got my HTC leather pouch same day i got HOX
Gorilla Glass V1 was scratch resistant (not scratch proof) with our finger oil , Gorilla Glass V2 with oleophobic is not scratch resistant.

sorry, but what the hell are you on about? oleophobic screen isn't a fault. the coating isn't making the scratches more likely. neither is the oil in your skin? clearly you scratched it with a bit of grit/sand/dirt that you didn't notice was there when you wiped it, or there was something in the pouch that scratched it (ie a bit of grit/dirt/sand)
gorilla glass 2 is stronger than gorilla glass 1 - due to the ion exchange, the molecules are pushed closer together than normal glass, hence it being more scratch resistant. but anything harder than glass WILL scratch it.
and all sanding does, even with toothpaste, is replace a bigger scratch with lots and lots of even thinner scratches. why would you want to do that?

I think he meant polishing, not sanding. I'd have to agree, these new screens are more fragile than the ole gorilla glass.
Back onto topic, I noticed the smoothness of the screen straight away, just felt so silky and smooth - nice!
I also noticed how dark and smudge-free the screen looks when it's off compared to me other devices that use the older glass.
The screen surface is awesome against fingerprints.
Just putting the phone into my pocket for 2 minutes is enough to wipe the few fingerprints that managed to stay on the screen.
Well, I've had my nexus 5 for little over 2 months now, and the screen is just covered with surface scratches. It's really annoying as I have never dropped the phone, or left it in my pocket with my keys, nevertheless, despite my best efforts the screen is riddled in micro scratches only visible in the sun. Is there any way I can remove these easily? or could I use a screen protector to hide them? Also, isn't gorilla glass 3 supposed to be scratch resistant, because from what I've seen it's really not.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Since you posted in this section and didn't use a (?), I thought you where providing a magic product to erase scratches
You can hide/reduce visibility of some or many of them with a screen protector but not all.
+1 to above. Matte screen protector helps a bit. Depends if it's your thing though.

Sorry about that, but yeah, i think I may pick up one of those invisible shields, but these scratches are quite thin and light. so who knows i guess we'll wait and see.
For microscratches pretty much any screen protector will do.

I'll echo the above sentiments. I had (well, have) a barely noticeable, yet nonetheless aggravating scratch, about a centimeter in length, toward the bottom of my display. A regular plastic (non-matte) screen protector solved that issue, as well as completely hiding a giant 'permanent' smudge caused by my oleophobic coating wearing off (but that's another story). So you'll hopefully be good to go.
Metals don't scratch glass. Sand particles do.
If the tiny scratches that can only be viewed at a certain angle under strong light when the screen is off irritate you that much, you may have to use a plastic screen protector and change it every 3 days, or a glass protector and change it every few months.
Gorilla Glass 3 is already the most scratch-resistant thing you can normally get for your phone. Any protectors will scratch worse than it.
There is no way to remove the scratches without damaging the oleophobic layer. A way to "remove" the scratch is to use toothpaste, but that actually scratches the sides of the scratch to "flatten" it. The oleophobic layer will be damaged and you will leave bad smudges on that area.
The best way is to buy a Nexus 5 front frame from eBay and replace it.

Wow isnt 3days too often? I would say with a good quality screen protector it should at least be good for 3-6months.

Glass protectors yes, but no matter how good quality a plastic screen protector is, the hardness is still only 4H max, meaning micro scratches can build up pretty soon. I mean those tiny, tiny scratches that you can hardly notice unless under the sun.
