[Q] Various questions about ROMs and app's on SD - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 General

Hi everyone !
First of all I want to make all my apologies if my english is too bad..
So I followed with a great attention some threads about CyanogenMod and I was very sad each time it failed.. My galaxy Y is my second Android phone (but in reality it's the first because my beTouch e110 was ... "bad" ) so I have some questions about the ROM :
1) What is the real goal of a ROM ? Providing new themes and cool fonts ? Does it improves performance or does it comes with new fonctionnalities ?
2) I tried some ROM like Hybrid, Sense Aurora.. But after installing them on my phone, the french language (yes, I am ) wasn't available. Should I change CSC after installing a new ROM ?
3) After the disapointment of no french language, I flashed my phone with Odin with a stock ROM. Is the XEF CSC a good choice for me ?
4) Now a question a bit more technical (I study in computer sciences ).. Why a ROM like CyanogenMod need a custom Kernel ?
5) And I want to know how to really move app to my SD card, because it says they are in, but after multiple installation of ROM and the flash I lost some app.. ?

Up for question 4. Devs mention the need for custom kernels in order for cyanogenmod to work on our units but all of them never mentioned why. Enlighten us even if it is a technical matter. I have a fair linux background and have patched and compiled kernels in the past. What kernel configuration or module does cyanogemod require anyway?

cyanogenmod uses 'criminal' kernel (as far as i know) ..
......to run it cant run on stock kernel.....

Yes, but do you know what are the specifications of this kernel ?
[Nobody to answer to my other questions ]

Up ! Nobody can answer ?

[For Starters]Best Rom...Custom or Stock...?

Hello guys...as every galaxy w owner wants best possible rom for his/her phone...people try switching between different ROMS and dont figure it out as some roms drain battery...some give fc's at while performing operations...so for those users (mostly noobs) ...best possible soultion is a stock rom...now mostly people say stock ROM is very much laggy...i had the same experience with my stock ROM...but now there is a new ROM Launched for Galaxy W XXLM8 Europe....this is very good as compared to other roms as it also brings some ICS features like Face Unlock...and is much smooth as compared to previous ROMS...
Following Link would help you with that...

[Q] RenovatePLUS rom help! + kernel/etc questions

Hi guys I have just flashed this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705334) however it is not the renovatePLUS version, how do I flash with the PLUS version, need it since it has mods and tweaks which I will need, auto-inverted rotating screen is driving me nuts!
FYI: I downloaded the plus zip but I dont know what to do with it, do I just extract into my phone? Because that did not work.
Also, I saw this guy, username(csec) with this signature (Phone: Renovated Endeavoru, F4, XM-Kernel #296 (Most fantastic combo in my entire experience with HOX)). I want to use have those thing stated, already have Renovate(will flash PLUS once I know how), and there is F4, anyone knows what that is? and finally XM-Kernel #296, which I believe is this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136731), can anyone please confirm is that is a similar one that I can use? Sorry for asking so many question, I finally decided to go deeper with flashing kernels and stuff and I require some professional advice, so please help! Thank you!

It doesnt seem to state on that thread that I have to do it through recovery. But thanks anyway!
For kernels I have one more question. Can I just use the kernel as provided? Of course checking that it is meant for my device 1st. Because there seems to be this confusing thing called repacking...

I RUINED my device before with kernels i didn't know how to use them and obviously i bricked my device so please dont try anything unless u gain experience
Repacking is like making peanut and jam sandwich its like making the kernel work with ur rom if u are using renovate u dont need to repack for XM kernels

If there are no Ramdisc tweaks in the ROM, you don't need to repack the kernel... Mostly kernel repacking isn't needed for Sense roms... So you just have to flash the boot.img from the kernel's zip and then flash the modules from recovery...
AOSP/AOKP Roms need kernel repack each and every time before flashing!

Sense roms these days are a lot so i suggest repacking as it will not do any harm!

Help once more!
Hi, so after researching a little bit more, I decided change my kernel to the XM kernel(original non-repacked), tried it for a few days, noticed that it response quite slowly compared to default kernel, things like slow display of lock screen upon power on, less smooth transition when. Could I have done it wrongly? Other than the slow response everything else seems fine, I noticed one of the features is S2W, I tried that on my buttons and it worked, however fast charge usb and usb mass storage isnt working, is there somewhere I can enable it or do you have an idea where I can find a guide for XM kernels that describes its features and functionality? Sorry for asking so many questions, thank you!
You have rather detailed instruction how to deal with fast charge and USB mass storage in XMister's thread (first one or two posts).
I suggest you install some of the kernel manageent applications:
- trickster MOD
- Set CPU
... There are many. Choose one that fits you (I am personally using Trickster).
There you will be able to play with your governors and scheduler, and thus achieve better performance or battery life. Or both. Check Q&A, there are few very educative threads about it.
You seem to be on a good way. Keep reading.

"upgrade" z1 compact

Hi everyone,
i have a xperia z1 compact phone and i'm a newbie in the world of custom rom, kernels, ecc..
A few days ago i flashed a new custom rom and the phone is working pretty well, but i have a question here..
Can i use a stock firmware (let's say original lollipop 5.1) with just a new kernel?
I was thinking about not installing a completely new rom but just a new kernel and the xposed installer to change something on this phone, is that possible?
If android releases a new version of android and i upgrade my version, do i have to reinstall the kernel? And some apps from sony's firmware are quite useless (at least for me), could i delete them just like a new rom? (ofc with root)
I just want a stock firmware with a new kernel that can use less battery possibly.. I don't need overclocking or stuff like that, just battery life i would say..
Sorry my bad english though and thank you all for your attention!

There are at least a couple of custom kernel options in this forum. Check ' development' and 'original development' threads. You can usually tell if they work for stock if they have either 'stock' or a build number, (e.g. 368), in the thread title. Otherwise they may be CM based, and won't work.

Android 5.1 on this phone is .368.
5.0 is .270 or .242
The others are KitKat, (either 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, or 4.4).
For the first - as always - be 120% sure that kernel you want to install is compatible with remaining system parts.
Base thing - stock to stock, non-stock to non-stock, but it is not everything.
Changes between versions them may be too big to play together.
You don't put any tires to any car. You need to know that dimensions fit.
Same here.

Finding a ROM

Hi guys, it's my first post here, so sorry if I will wrong the section.
So, I have a lot of problems with my Note II: slowdowns, "the process has been stopped", etc.. :crying:
I would like a rom stable!! The most important thing is stability, fewer bugs possible, and with the Note features...
Who help me?

Do you wish a stock rom , A custom rom ?? .
If you took the first option then i'd recommend KitKat with Nadia custom kernel , i've used it , it's good .
If the second choice is your preference then first i'd suggest you read about how these things work and how they are installed , the custom recovery . etcetera ,before taking any step through the process
Then and this is an important approach : Focus on the model of your phone and be careful , flashing the wrong ROM might mess with the soft of your device , and you won't like it trust me .
and good luck
Any cyanogenmod ROM should be fine.

...he wants the Note features, including spen! No way to have this features in an acceptable way on any kind of rom except those one TW based. So he can decide to stay on pure stock, maybe rooted, debloated and xposed or on some Note 3, 4 etc port - or simple reinstall his updated stock rom if he doesn't want to mess around.
If you bought a Note I suppose it is for the S Pen (on my N3 I coutend 3000 charging and 2600 spen in/out), otherwise any S series would be fine, and speed and rock solid CM would be a good choice - obviously if you don't use the pen a Note is a S...
Hi guys, sorry for the delay but I'm very busy with the university and I'am also sick in this period!

Technical wondering about KERNELS & Cyanogenmod

First of all i'd like to express how glad i'm for being in such community , it's good not to feel alone intellectually .
The situation is i'm enjoying my custom rom CM and it's fascinating flexibility But i do still want to get custom kernel specially
" AGNI " , my phone is GT-N7100 and i noticed that this custom rom is actually using a custom kernel of it's own , i didn't read much about android infrastructure and how it's synchronized with custom roms however , is it possible to change the MOD'S kernel with another one , and if not , is there any other productive alternatives can be made ?
Wish me luck .
