Hi everyone,
I was on the stock latest official with my Epic 4G Touch White. Last weekend I updated to FB17 via Odin and I believe since then my phone has been overheating for no reason.
At one point it was so bad that when I put my phone on my ear it burned my ear, and I had to take it off. It was literally that hot. I think it happens more when it's charging, but right now it's doing it and I'm not even charging it. Right now it's warm, not hot, but it does get really hot some times when I'm not even using it.
Anyone know why this is happening? Is it FB17?
EDIT: ...it's dolphin browser.

So you think its dolphin browser... Cause I use DB on the daily and have never had issues with my phone overheating.
I am running the FB17 Flashed through Rogue CWM and i have had no problems with heat, but i have seen alot of complaints about this rom making their phone really hot. one thing that might help is to leave the gps off unless using navigation because the 3g with show your location in maps and on google.

Check the picture I posted.
Are you leaving DB by pressing home? Are you leaving DB with flash content or something graphic intensive while leaving it in the background?

I saw the picture... That is strictly indicating that Dolphin browser is using the majority of your battery life, not that it is increasing the overall temp of your phone. I think rigorous is right, my guess would also be that it is ROM related. Were you seeing this issue when using DB with your previous setup before FB17?
Close the browser by pressing on exit in the menu...
This closes all the tabs, all the scripts and all the flash contents...

I decided to flash the new rooted FB17 along with CWM and a new theme.
I'm not going to install Dolphin Browser, so far no more overheating issues.
Its not just dolphin, it's any browser. When you browse sites in desktop UA, it will cause the CPU to work harder. When viewing mobile sites, it doesn't overheat

A memory leak? And I don't know if it was running in the background. Manage apps would tell me?

When you are exiting Miren you have to hit the menu button and select exit app or it will continue to run in the background.

You could also use the long press back button if on CM7.
I guess I kinda have a bad internet habit of just pressing home. I use back to close for kik and other things I don't want open. I'll try getting use to that. Stupid auto brightness setting didn't help. I really like miren. I don't wanna ditch it for being a hog.

It could be a memory leak, but I don't think so.
In reality, the phone is calling back to china to report your location and all your activities...

Ok, just kidding. I have a suspicion that it's all the rss feeds updating every so often (too often). I had the same issue when I first started using miren. I couldn't figure out what the damn thing was doing in the background, until closely examining my wifi activity. I posted about it in one of the miren threads, but the fix is to delete all the rss feeds that are preconfigured when you install the app.
Even when exiting the app properly, it still continues to run in the background. This usually doesn't bother me, but I would use it for ten minutes & it would account for at least 30% of my battery use over eight hours. I haven't used it in a while, though, so it could be different now.
I've been doing testing for Maxthon so having 6 or 7 browsers on my phone for comparisions is a must. Here's what I've noticed.
Installed Miren and without even starting it, it ran in the background. Ok let's reboot, same thing. Alright Miren, enough is enough, terminate process. 5 minutes later there it was running again. Set my task killer to "I hate Miren" and then my task killer replaced Miren for usage because all it did was keep killing Miren. I haven't really looked into why but can say that this is normal for Miren.

Hi everyone, I'm new here.
I really love the stock browser it supports flash which many other browsers now don't. The problem I am having is internet pages are taking 5 mins to load sometimes I have to reset it because it takes so long and the loading bar doesn't move.
Is anyone having this problem? What can I do? I have looked on the app store other browsers do not support flash anymore I used to use opera mobile.
Thanks people.

Try clearing the data and cache out of the stock browser and see if that speeds things up. IMO however Chrome is the best and quickest browser available (and it supports Flash I think)
Hi and welcome
i'm having the same prob as you but it's been happening to me randomly on and off for years, i guess it can't be rom related or even phone related so it must be the signal/reception in the area ... have you tried on wifi?
Chrome doesn't support flash otherwise I would use it as it is really good. Stock is good just has its moments when it doesn't work. I haven't had any problems with wifi on so far but then I have only started having problems with the browser today. It might just be the reception and the signal like you said due to the rain (In the UK).

That's a shame. When Chrome comes out of Beta then im sure it going to support Flash (desktop version already has it built in).
When is it coming out of beta?

I have the same problem, with the stock browser and chrome. "connection to the server timed out". I actually sold my original X because of it. It's not as often on my new one.
My DHD was the same, but at least "Force stop" fixed the problem. No such luck with my X.

I didn't want to ninja the aokp thread so I'm posting this here. So for a while i was running aokp version 26 with no real issues. I wasn't following the development for a while so when i checked back they were at version 32 which runs 4.0.4.
I also want to mention I'm running no new apps, basically the same setup as when i was on 26.
Facebook seemed to be a big culprit and when i closed that it helped a bit. The screen seems to be using more than it did too. I am mainly concerned with all the wake time. The phone is awake a lot more than the screen is on.

whats the name of that app sucker app you posted.
reset your kernel, wipe and then flash again. It might help
It's called badass battery manager pro. I downloaded it last night from the market because someone on another forum suggested it. It's pretty nice in that it shows battery use app by app.
I'm also using lean kernel. Flashed it a couple days ago. Was using trinity for a while then tried out lean. It actually runs a lot smoother with lean but no battery change.
today it actually isn't to bad. All i did was manually stop Facebook. So once again it seems fb was causing issues. That app is junk.
i am still curious why it is awake so much. GPS is off, wifi is off (always have 3 or 4g), sync is off. Only thing i leave on is nfc but i have been told that is only active when the screen is on. I use no weather type widgets either. I have no clue what would keep waking the phone.
Edit: and what do you mean by reset the kernel. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I installed the rom, then a couple days later flashed the lean kernel over trinity. Is there another way to do it?

I only saw battery improvements with AOKP's 4.0.4 integration.
Quick update, i have a screenshot from a better part of the day. I'm getting a ton of awake time. are there any common culprits that i can maybe freeze with titanium?

Yeah, I'm going to stop using the Facebook app I think. It's such a drainer. I don't mind a game taking up battery on its own but something like that should not use as much as it does! Hopefully they fix it soon.
Why does the GPS area in the screenshot show over 90 minutes of usage when I have GPS turned off? Any ideas?

Facebook has been long known to be a poorly coded app (even the newest version) I've stuck to using the browser only because it's so buggy. I'd chalk it up to that...
Turn location off inside settings of app.

The lastest build of their app is by far the worst I have used personally. Someone posted an older build which does not have as many features, but it is way less buggy.
LMK if you want a link.

same issue!
im seeing the same problem on my phone now, simply annoying. its my #1 battery drain even without using the phone or app.
app can be completely off, not on process list, gps turned off, location turned off in app, still goes up! might start using the mobile site instead of app.... until this can be fixed

That's exactly what was happening with my phone. I've been using the app that dschreiber69 provided earlier in this thread, but because Facebook eats so much battery on this phone I haven't been using it much anymore. Furthermore, I haven't been using Facebook much on either my phone or a computer. I'm getting sick of it, same crap every day. Nothing new. Blah.
Wife has been complaining that her keyboard hasn't been responsive, that its not picking up her swypes. I tried it out and I noticed that its just laggy all around. Opening/closing apps, swiping through screens. Everything is just so slow. Has anyone else noticed this?
I've been running smooth like buttah since the update. But, I flashed the update tar so my system was wiped clean. Also have done the usual tweaks (freezing/Uninstaller crap, turning off unneeded notifications, etc)

Any suggestions for which ROM?
I've always run rooted stock on my S3 but the 4.4.2 update (installed via cnexus method) is doing weird things. Sometimes it's fast. Sometimes it crashes. Usually while I'm trying to take an important call.
My criteria: stability, speed, and assurance of periodic updates, in that order. No nightlies on that device, just something that works well. It's my work phone and I want to make it last for a year.
Thanks,
BJ

I would solve the problem under stock first, otherwise you may still have the problem no matter what ROM you use. Try Odining the stock ND8 tar again? Make sure the MD5 hash matches what you downloaded for it.
Maybe it's an app you have installed? Try just adding downloaded apps one or a few at a time.
I've successfully run stock rooted ND8, Wicked X v6+, and now on Singularity.
