My Epic 4g Touch is connected through Credomobile. I have Credomobile's 3rd party insurance. The phone I have is little more than a month old. My question is will the Sprint Store honor warranty, exchanges or repair of my Epic 4G Touch? I have been unfortunate enough to brick my phone by 'trying' an ICS ROM and then wiping (or attempting to wipe) said ROM to reflash a GBread ROM to it. To top it all off I used CWM Touch to do it. Anyway the phone is bricked. Won't go into recovery or download. I've been following the 'Bricked' threads and think taking the phone to my nearest Sprint Store is in order. But will the Sprint Store honor phones from it's resellers(Credomobile)? It would be alot easier to just walk-in to a Sprint Store and show what's happened versus explain over the phone to Credomobile...
If I was a betting man, I'd bet on sprint saying it wasn't their problem.
No, if you have 3rd party insurance, you have to go through them to make a claim. If you had TEP through Sprint, then you could go to a Sprint store.

I doubt it. Credo is a good company but they are an MVNO so you probably have to buy insurance through them. I would have used their service (since it's just Sprint with some activism involved) but I couldn't figure out if I could port a Sprint phone over. The problem with all these MVNOs is that they aren't given access to the higher end handsets so they are only good if you want a low-to-mid-range phone or hack a Sprint phone over.
I used to have credo and have taken my phones to the sprint store for certain things. i found that the majority of sprint store employees have no i idea what credo is. if they don't need to pull up your account they won't know. for your situation a warranty replacement would use your account info so you couldn't go to the sprint store, but you could stop by a sprint repair center and try to find someone who could flash your phone with their pst tool. May or May not work.
As for taking a sprint phone to a credo account they won't do it even if it is a phone they carry. they told me that the esn has to be sold from them to be in their database.
I used to have credo but switched back to sprint. really is the same service except credo donate 1% a month to progressive causes. i found that i was paying 20% more a month on a plan compared to a a a plan on sprint just to donate 1%. They are nice though.

im just really curious as to what to do if someday i was to want to exchange my phone in for the sprint warranty. i currently have it rooted via toast method with fresh 0.2 rom and am going to update it to the newest radio. what steps would i take, should the time come to exchange for warranty. im curious because if stable Evos with no screen or light leakage start to come out i wanna be ready to roll for a exchange. thank you in advance
I was told by a man that rooting was no big deal, but installing new roms would violate the warranty.
This was in a Sprint store, with two employees inside listening to me.
ok, i work at a corporate service and repair store. technically if their is any notice of the software being modded. ex: roms, rooted etc... than we do not authorize an exchange and will flag the device DBR (damaged beyond repair) but of course that depends on which store you goto. At my store it depends on what the phones doing and customers history with Sprint.
but in the end. just un root your phone when you go in.
I've been reading in this forum about a 1-year free warranty from Sprint (not their special add-on plans like TEP). I searched the Sprint site for information on this warranty, but could not find it. Are you sure you can return a defective Evo for a replacement (new or refurb) for up to 1 year? Is that information on-line, or only found in the Evo packaging? Is this true for Evos purchased at BB & RS as well?
well i dont know about BB and radioshacks and stuff. but I work at a sprint corporate store. and how it works is you take in the phone to a service and repair store. we try to fix the phones, if were unable to and its out of the 30 days, typically 9/10 we order you a replacement. (as long as its not physical dmg or liquid)
Please read title. Thank you kindly.
Cant they track it?
You could sell it, but that's kinda morally objectionable.
Plus it will be flagged as having a bad ESN, so it won't be able to be activated on Sprint.

Yea But cant you still use it??
the point is you can do what you want but sprint is not going to let it be put on a line. The ESN has been blacklisted so if you want to use it as a music player or whatever you want that does not use phone service or data then yes but as a phone No.
I will buy it for forty dollars!

Once you lose a phone, Sprint places it on a lost/stolen list. If you sell it, the purchaser will not be able to activate it.
Sell on ebay and state has bad esn
I think if you only went through asurion the phone might still work. I had a phone that was lost and I did it through the website and i gave the phone to someone else when i found it and they told me that it activated. So maybe have a friend try and see if it works.

Ill Buy it for $50 dollars, no questions ask!! I want to start into development roms, and ill be good for me!!!
Why even ask a question like that? Once you accepted the condition to file the claim then the phone belongs to the insurance company. The only sense to this question is that you want to know if you will be in any kind trouble.

i thought the same thing too when i lost my phone in the movie theatre after it fell out of my pocket. I filed a claim and got the replacment then i was able to find my lost phone shortly after. i checked the ESN and it was still clean. i was surprised but now i have two evos. You can always call them and check if its still a valid esn.
Because I don't want to cause anyone any undo trouble. I would like to get my deductible back so I will say bad esn on eBay for $100 as another forum member sugested. Thank you for all input into this discussion.

You certainly can activate it still.
I lost my TP2 and got a new one thru insurance and then Sprint called me and told me someone turned in my lost tp2.
I reactivated my original the second I got home. I sold the new TP2. I called Sprint and they told me I was supposed to send the lost one to the insurance but it was up to me. They didn't really care.
Moral wrong..yes... doable .. yes.
if you call ausrion and get a replacement phone they send you another one out but by law or sprint policy (not sure which its to early for me to google it a few sprint employees have told me though) they cant contact sprint and flag it as bad ESN your suppose to do that yourself. So you can activate the old one if you like with 0 issues. Been their and have done it. (on accident found the missing phone like a week or 2 later) sold it to a friend and he is still using it.
There are methods to make a phone work on another carrier if it has a bad ESN on Sprint. Cricket and Metro PCS are the carriers that are most commonly used in the US. I actually bought an Evo on Craigslist a while back for a good price. It wasn't listed as lost/stolen, but it was still tied to a suspended Sprint account. I later sold it on eBay for $360 and listed it with a bad ESN and a bad headphone jack. I think the guy I sold it to was planning on using it in Mexico.
Even without activation, an Evo makes a pretty nice MID on Wifi. Just be warned that most Android devices won't connect to an ad-hoc Wifi network, so it's hard to tether it to another phone.
You could sell it for more than $100. Can't you hack it to work with VZW PRL? Maybe that'll sell for more.
Technically you could sell it to someone on metro pcs or cricket.. they dont care about esn's being blacklisted they'll activate it anyway.

Oh God the moral police is here. Its a very valid question. I would do the same damn thing this Guy is doing. Just think of it as a way to recover that 10 dollars extra a month we are ALL getting hosed for every month.
Sent on my cursed EVO
The "moral" thing to do is call the insurance company, explain that you found your old phone and you would like to return the phone and get your deductible returned as well.
I would think they would go for it as they make out in the end.
And you can sleep at night knowing they won't catch on to you some day and deactivate your phone. (highly doubt that could ever happen, but I tend to have a really guilty conscience. what's a $100 anyway.....)
I recently rooted my Samsung epic 4g and installed cm7. By rooting my epic I knew I was voiding my manufacturer warrenty and that if my actions bricked my device that was on me to replace it. However, I am on the Sprint network and have been paying for "Total Equipment Protection." Two days after installing a new rom, I noticed my screen was highly distorted and by the end of the day the screen would only flicker. I discovered that the flex cable for the slide keyboard was worn and was in need of being replaced. After reading several posts on this website about sprint serviceing rooted phones with hardware problem, I decided I would call sprint and get some more information on the topic. The CSR informed me that sprint isn't really so hard on people with rooted phones and that any sprint repair center would still fix my phone under total Equipment Protection as it was damaged due to normal wear and tear of a piece of hardware. Acting on this information I went to the nearest repair center. When i went to check in my phone for service, I told the tech the phone was rooted and I was told that they would still service it. He told me that no, they wouldn't service it and he would make sure to flag my account and void my warranties. Now, a few days later, I have been too three repair centers and have been refused at all three. In fact, when i offered to pay for the service out of pocket, I was informed that my money "has no value here" and i should leave. I should add that I was very polite to the tech. Today I called Sprint again, and explained the situation. The rep told me that they should have serviced my phone under the total Equipment Protection "because with that, you could smash your phone with a hammer outside the store and it would still be covered ( with deductibles of course). ". So here I am, I had to get a new phone because corporate Sprint says one thing, but local Sprint stores say the opposite.
Is there any sort of formal policy letter released by Sprint to address this complete breakdown of communications? I keep seeing people refering to it, but after all this Id love to get my hands on something.
I'm not sure where this thread should actually go, sorry if its misplaced, I just figured this is something that should be addressed if for nothing else, to prevent a situation like mine from ruining someone else's day .
Searched the Epic 4G sub forums using the keywords "root policy", and the result was halfway down the first page.

That's crap I feel for ya that's a load of bs but it is usally smarter to play stupid than tell them straight up its rooted I hate local reps who think their The Ultimate Being of all things righteous and technilogical....

At this point its too late, the rep at one of the stores blacklisted my device and banned it from the network as if it was reported stolen. I have been on the phone with sprint all morning and they have refused any form of service, insurance, credit, anything. At this point I'm leaving Sprint. Very unfortunate as I've been with them since January 07.

Emailed sprints ceo and hoping something comes of it, like maybe a policy letter from the ceo could get the local stores to do there job. Either way, ill upload a copy of the email conversation when i hear back from him or his assistant.
Email Sprints CEO with a copy of their own handling policy for root devices. Basically they are told to flash it to stock firmware. If problem persists, repair or replace the device and "note" the device was rooted. If unable to flash stock firmware, "note" device was rooted and replace the device. Nowhere in their own policy does it state "you have the right to refuse service to a rooted customer and blacklist their device" or anything of the like.

A few months ago the screen slowly started turning red on my epic, then purple, then black. You could still see a few lines of pixels right along the edge showing the screen was on, but otherwise it was useless.
I went to the sprint store and had them look at it. I mentioned it was rooted, the guy said no problem, it looks like a hardware issue covered under your warranty. They ordered me a new epic, but since it was a couple weeks out on backorder, they sent me to another store that went ahead and replaced my screen for free (other store had an extra one for that use) while I waited for a new phone. After the repair I would have canceled the new phone, but the wifi and cell signal took a drop from having the phone opened. Long story short, at the end of the week, my replacement arrived, they set it up, and I was out the door. Gave them my rooted/ROM'd/overclocked epic4g and they gave me back the battery and SD card. They even gave me a free water bottle.
This cost me $0, a couple hours, and was nothing but a good experience. The guy there said they never turn rooted phones down for unrelated hardware failures. A separate store in Colorado helped my mother set up PDAnet tethering on her phone so she could check her email on her computer without paying for wifi tethering. Never seen a company so committed to their customers, at least in my experience.

One recommendation that I can offer u is, report this issue to the fcc, and send a copy of ur email to the fcc right to sprints ceo. And emphasize that u did report to fcc. Major customer service complaints do get handled by the fcc. And also state that u felt discriminated against.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Omg LOL I was literally just in the process of researching what kind of FCC complaint I could make LOL but thanks for the effort to assist me, I do appreciate it. As an update, I haven't heard backfrom Dan Hesse but I'm still waiting.
Continue sending him an email. Do it as many times as u need to. That needs to get his attention and resolved appropriatly. Sprints main focus now is "customer satisfaction". Also, if u were able to get the names of the reps that caused u this problem, place that in the email as well. Be specific on every detail of the occurence. This will show to the ceo, factual evidence and discrimination. Also, report it to the better business bereau. They accredit all compaines.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Sprint is no longer concerned with customer satisfaction. Those days are passed. They are only concerned with saving their business now. That is why they locked down on moving upgrades and releasing people from ETFs. I have had several drawn out arguments with Executive office and they won't budge.

theres always more to the story. were blind on one side here.
You should go back to the store and get the techs name. That guy should lose his job and testicles.
I know this is probably a long shot, but from what I've read Asurion doesn't follow the phone, it follows the SIM. I spoke with a lady from Asurion, but she was no help at all, so I spoke with someone at T-Mobile and he wasn't any help either. They both basically stated that they weren't sure and would need to get back to me about it. That was almost a week ago and I still haven't heard back from either company, great customer service, isn't it?
If the insurance won't cover the phone I don't want to be paying the $7.99/mo for it and not be able to use it if the time comes.
PS: I do assume the answer is no, but it's worth asking I suppose.
Try starting a claim online and see how far it goes. Or call and ask someone at asurion.

the answer is no..i have checked, double checked, tripled checked...
i originally asked a tmo chat rep..he said yes, i didnt believe him so i wanted to double check...i asked another rep and he said no...then i called asurion directly and they said no
asurion is the company that handles most of the major US carriers...being that the galaxy nexus (GSM) is not supported by any of our carriers its easy to see that the answer would be no
ensquared will though...only like $60/year and a $75 deductible
ensquared.com
they cover water damage, loss, theft, drops, pretty much everything
i just sold my SG2 today..gonna call tmobile to cancel my phone insurance now that im using the galaxy nexus
according to their pamphlets they only cover phones sold by tmobile. I have found securranty to be a cheaper but reliable provider of smart phone insurance.
I sold my Boost-flashed E4GT recently after moving to T-Mobile. The person who bought it is having trouble activating, even though my old number is no longer in service. So I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and deal with Boost's godawful customer service to get my account fully deactivated.
Do they really care these days about people having flashed phones, or will I still need to tell them it's an Incognito if the subject comes up?

If you have a balance then the ESN may not be good until they clear the balance one way or the other. I've gone on Sprint Support Chat and checked in the past if an ESN was good or not.
If it's using a donor ESN then you could always dump the donor and reset it back to the factory settings. Basically undo all that you did before.
