[Q] Need Advice whether to repair desire or not - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a desire bought from starhub, singapore which is out of warranty .. It's having the infamous reboot problem while using gprs/3g/gps the only solution of which seems to be replacing the motherboard.. HTC Singapore asks 150 SGD For replacing the motherboard..
1.Is it worth spending money on the desire or shall i move on?
2.i also see people in many forums reporting the problem to come back after a few months of replacing motherboard too.. I'm worried about that.. Will they provide any sort of warranty on the replaced motherboard?
Pls advice..

Well if the device is still under warranty and the replaced motherboard acts up again, then they HTC have to replace it. Given the fact that you bought a defective unit that is out of warranty from Starhub, then it's better for you to return it to where you bought it and get a refund of some sort or a replacement unit.
I would move on and get a decent smartphone... one that's relatively new and is in warranty. Don't be cheap because in the end, you'll get what you pay for.

Hi,
Not sure what the exchange rate is, but I would probably think it would be better to get a new phone.
I have never tried, but some ROMs allow you to overclock the cpu, maybe you could try to underclock yours and see if the reboot problem goes away. You might already have tried all that.
Don't throw money away on a motherboard though, invest in a new and better model instead.
Mons

Get a new one
I would skip reaping that phone unless you have the parts on hand. keep it around, you might need the screen one day.

Thank you guys..

tried underclocking it.. But no use... the only solution is motherboard change.. By the way, 150 SGD Is around 110 USD.. Although i may not be investing in a new phone as of now, i just wanted to know if it's reasonable to spend 110 usd for this problem so that i could keep the phone for a year more.

Not worth it. You'll probably be fine with a midrange priced phone with 150SGD (not eally sure how it goes in Singapore ) and save up for a decent replacement for Desire.

Destroy my desire

Hi been having such problems with my desire and I cant be bothered with it anymore. Is there any way to destroy it so that it cant be repaired and has to be replaced.
I would also prefer to do it in a way that I cant be blamed for this as I'll get a lot of greif.
simply use your car upside down and drop it from a height of approx. 20 meters (or more as you like) onto your Desire. Problem solved
Flushing it would be more appropriate. But I have reported all my problems to t-mobile who are thinking about swapping my phone, is there any way I can do something that I wont look like I did anything and it was a phone fault.
An idea could be to deliberately give it a bad flash. What about if you try to install your carriers RUU and unplugged the USB cable mid flash?
Please note that i do not recommend you do this and i have no idea if it would actually achieve what you wish. I know on O2 UK if you return a handset for a repair, then return again with the same fault inside 30 days it automatically becomes a replacement not a repair. Not sure if other carriers are similar.
chris
yea t mobile here have said that they will replace it is it keeps causing me problems.
Walk through a bad area playing angry birds...wont take long to get it stolen.
This way you can scam your insurance without breaking the law, genius...unless you get stabbed, but at least you'll have a cool scar, but that's what you get for fraud.
Fraud never pays off and it will definitely come back to you... Better try to sell your desire and get a new phone in a proper way.

I'm creased!!! Lol
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have one word for you, (and yes, it works) Edit
I've seen some mad posts in my time, but this is close to being in my top 5.
Anyway, we can't condone any kind of fraud here on XDA Developers, and therefore......... Thread closed.

[Q] Desire HD - Motherboard failure

Hello,
I have a HTC Desire HD that has just died on me, it just stopped detecting the SIM car. Everything else works just fine.
Gave it to HTC service here in India and they gave me a quote of 13000 INR ($260) to replace it. Since its out of warranty (15 days over) I'll have to bear the expense.
Now I got this phone for 25000 INR($500) it makes no sense to go for this replacement. Now my dilema here is what more can I do with this phone besides using it as a glorifed paper weight
I doubt root it would solve this issue. But would love to hear from you.
Kind regards
I'd just went out of the similar problem. One day my DHD turn off and... That's all ! It just turn of and never came back. I'd to send it to HTC support, they return it to me saying something like "we changed the motherboard".
Now I think "Whatdafuck is this phone whitch can die one day without any aparent reason !!". At it's next death I'll get a Motorola.

Atleast you were lucky that you device was under warranty. I am well and truly screwed.
cheers
Personally, I'd get it repaired, since you could easily get another years' use out of it (more, but other devices will start to make it look old).
That would then work out at $20/month, compared to say $40 ($500/12 months) for a new phone, even via an operator's subsidy.
I'd also let HTC do it so that they can respond directly, should anything go wrong.
Sorry I saw you replied.
If you pay the HTC support can repair your phone.

I would try to buy very cheap non working phone with broken digitizer or similar - many people (at least in europe) sell their phones when they are broken and get new ones. And I would change the mainboard myself. its not that difficult. Ive done it with my old htc topaz...
Suffering at the hands of HTC
Last week, my 1.5 years old Desire 816 was working absolutely flawlessly. 5 seconds later, I pick it up and it is dead! :crying:
The HTC Service Center guys are asking for Rs. 9,700 for changing the Motherboard and I am like WT*. I can buy a new phone at that price. A bit of research and find out that Motherboard issues are very common in HTC. This surely was my last HTC phone.
Now I have 2 questions:
1. Is there any way I can get this phone repaired in the open market?
2. I was using CDMA as my primary number. I am not finding any other reputed manufacturer who has CDMA smartphones. I am not willing to ditch CDMA as of now. Any suggestions for a good smartphone that is not HTC?

Phone broke, been told I voided the warranty by installing 'illegal software'

Hey,
So started a new account to post this and have searched forum and seen some similar stories but wondering if there's any new info.
Receiver and camera on phone broke. Sent it back for repair and been quoted £134 to repair, including replacement of the main board (£60) and some plastic parts (camera lens apparently, £20).
When I rang to ask why it was so much i was told it was because i voided the warranty by installing the 2.3 upgrade from their developer site. Apparently there were warnings that the warranty would be voided when I did this (which I don't remember at all and will look into). Makes me pretty damned angry that one of their own upgrades that they promoted on their own Facebook page has apparently voided my warranty.
Anyway, apparently because my phone has S-OFF (can't even remember what this means) and this 2.3 software they need to replace the main board.
Is it just me or is that insane? Like having to replace a motherboard on a computer just to upgrade windows.
Anyone had a similar issue? Their customer service team were almost totally inept at answering my questions.
tl;dr Phone broke. Being asked to pay for a new main board cos I installed the official 2.3 upgrade which is considered illegal software. Advice?
Buy a new phone. You know that you are wrong and still arguing with them. Forget about the 2.3 part, if you s-off, you void the warranty.
What network are you on? If you are in the Uk the networks are quite relaxed when you join the darkside. I've sent my desire in three times, (stupid engineers), with a custom rom and they laughed and fixed my phone. I'm not the only one too.
If you are anywhere else there are loopholes.
Well yes the cost of Main Board Replacement is more then half the cost of Entire the Cellphone. And now as the Desire is about 2 Years old and its rate might have dipped to 50% of its original cost in 2010 its well worth to buy a new Phone instead of replace Main Board.
Some Engineers of HTC Just don't understand anything.
Once I tried and he was asking me if its possible to install any apps in Android???
I'm not so much questioning whether i've voided the warranty, i'm questioning why I have to pay a very large sum to replace the main board when I can't work out what it has to do with the software on the phone.
Surely they can just update the software on the phone without replacing the main board? Seems just like an opportunity to charge me a ****load of money.

They probably think that the hardware got corrupted, and the price is pretty much what you will expect, unless if you fix it by yourself. The desire is a good but outdated phone. I would consider this as an opportunity to get a new phone, but that's just me.

Go get a Sensation especially with it's recent price drop...it costs 22000INR now!!
Considering getting one myself!!f**k repair and think of it as a reason to get a new one

More overheating - G7

I know this is a mother board problem, but because I was impatient, and bought a gray import before the Desire was officially on sale in my country, I can't get a warranty repair, also, it is more than 2 years old.
The problem has gotten worse over time, such that now graphically intensive games can cause a boot loop in less than 1 minute. phone calls kill it in under 10. It doesn't help that I live in a hot country, air temperature in my apartment is often 35-40C.
I decided to bite the bullet and pay for the repair myself, but, I am having difficulty finding an authorized dealer to make the repair (because of the phone status) also, I can buy a used phone for less than the cost to repair mine.
So, my question is... Is there anyway to know if a used phone has either had the mobo replaced, or is a production model with a modified mobo?
I don't want to get another phone and find that it has the same problem.
I like the desire. it does everything I need, so I don't want a different phone. I have a 7 inch tablet which I use for movies etc. so I don't need a bigger or better screen. I just need reliability.

WiFi Issue

Hello,
So I have the wifi issue where the signal is pathetic, and is unfortunately barely usable nowadays. Having contacted HTC (and quoting their own admission that it is a hardware fault), I have been told that due to the phone being rooted it is out of warranty, and to have it fixed I will have to pay to get it "back in warranty" (so they want a bit more money).
Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this response, and if they went ahead with it what sort of fee they were charged?
Thanks.

I think it's time to move on mate...
Not that that is a reason to separate with the phone, but if that issue makes the phone unusable for you, i don't think it's worth repairing, since you can still sell it, as it is not a major fault and get something like the HTC ONE IF you liked the HOX.
You can even get S-OFF on it...
I have a HOX too and am thinking of switching to the ONE.
That is the standard response for bootloader unlocked devices so you are not alone...
If you don't have the money to upgrade and like your HOX then go ahead and get it fixed.
If it's really a hardware problem there is nothing you can do yourself.
You could try to install a custom rom and see whether it's really a hardware of a software problem...

I really wish I could move on! The contract is 24 month (ie. next April), however even if it wasn't I am going travelling in December, meaning it unfortunately wouldn't make financial sense to purchase a new device (which I would definitely do otherwise!) Certainly I have the money to upgrade, but by the time I am home there will probably be another flagship (with talk of the HTC M8+ or something :L).
Definitely not a software issue, I definitely enjoy custom ROMs! My One X ROMs of choice have been CyanogenMOD and Viper X. Just a shame companies refuse to repair Android phones due to them being rooted - particularly when they have previously admitted it is their problem!

The odds are good you have the regularly reported antenna issue that means the pins on the motherboard are not making proper contact with the antenna.
There is PLENTY you can do to sort this yourself, but it does involve opening your phone.
There is an absolute TON of video guides on doing this on YouTube. Check it out and decide if you want to go that route.
Look for one that DOES NOT involve soldering any wires. You just use a couple of small bits of tin foil and your signal should be fixed right up.
