Hey everyone .. I was just thinking back to my Blackberry days (ew) and how much I liked being able to hold down the Volume Down button to initiate Silent/Vib mode. Is there any way to do this? Ideally I would like to be able to do that from the lockscreen too. Any ideas? I only bring it up because I think other people would like this feature too.

Juggernaut ROM has a lockscreen where you can slide the other side for vibration. Also the notification toggles has this also. It really isn't needed outside of that.

Well I'm using the new ICS style lockscreen so it doesn't have the sliders. Maybe its not something people would like *shrug*

If you hold vol down it does go to silent and vibrate..? Not from the lock screen but it does it.

Guess I'm just in a testy mood today but why do people say things "aren't needed"? Android phones aren't "needed", but we want them, and we want them to function in a certain way, that's why we're on XDA after all right? Kudos for giving the alternative methods but I, like the OP, would much rather be able to use the physical buttons (while in the lock screen especially so I could silence the phone without even looking at it) to turn the phone to vibrate. That way, I can use my lock screen and toggle space that WOULD'VE been taken up by volume controls, to launch other things.

It really isn't needed if you think about it. There are 3 current methods in which you can silence your phone, I think we should focus our want into something much more productive and innovative since if we continue down this path, it's going to contribute to a cycle of redundancy.
I agree that it's the "wants" that makes this place great, but it's not like we're crippled to have only one way to silence our phones after all. One man's inconvenience is another one's convenience. I don't want certain features since it may break other features that I really liked which may result in some sort of compromise. We have different wants and objectives with our own phones, which is great, but don't try to confuse what you're trying to get out of your phone with what I am trying to get out with mine.

There's absolutely no reason my want has to break any other features or mean any sort of compromise. Also you didn't even address the user case I presented in which vol down to vibrate is still the quickest, and most discreet method. Nobody's confusing what we want out of our respective phones (what does that even mean?). And no, we're not crippled by not having that feature, but nobody said we were. But my original point stands, it's counter productive and a bit condescending to tell someone else what they should or shouldn't want. If you have alternatives to offer, awesome but why bother saying "you shouldn't want this".
As for the actual topic, it definitely seems like this is less prevalent, on my G1 and MyTouch3G I used a bunch of ROMs with it baked in.

Silent mode, along with music play/stop and screen wakeup are the three most oft used features in my book

I think the user would have a faster time swiping across their lockscreen to silence their phones, since the method you mentioned would require one or two hands, with one button press to bring up the lockscreen, the other to button press to hold down the vol toggles. I still think my proposed method is much more efficient in terms of bringing up the lockscreen to silence.
This is all completely my opinion, and If I came out condescending, that was NOT my intention. In a way, I think we're past arguing about adding in features to arguing more on wants and needs which I'm not against at all. I'm more or less against adding in extra features that in a way isn't really revolutionary or anything new for this phone. I honestly think it's counter productive to ask developers for extra small features that already has it in a different way, instead of opting for bigger features, and in this case with Juggernaut 5.0, ICS lockscreen with music widget, which is huge. And again, this comes back to the perspective we have for our phones, which most want the bigger piece of the pie (ICS lockscreen, toggle rearrangement, etc) while others may want more smaller features added in for their specific niche.
Also, would it have been better if I put "I honestly think..." in the last sentence of my first post? I believe that the way the first post I posted did sound a bit presumptuous and snobby, which you were right to point out. Again, that was not my intention.
I don't want to derail this thread with any of our differences so PM if you any further qualms. And all things considered, I think we just violently agree for the most part and disagree on why specific features should be implemented.

Omg guyz are you guys getting this 1.3453379 millisecond lag when you push the home button? It's sooo annoying omg.
This phone sucks! I'm taking it back. Get this...I asked it to make coffee for me this morning, and it just laid there doing nothing!! What a POS!
Seriously people, this is what you guys complaining about stupid things sound like. I have a feeling the people complaining are either 13 years old, or have absolutely no life.
This phone is awesome in every way possible. The screen is HUGE, bright and bold. The colors are vibrant. The GPS locks in almost immediately. The speed is fast. It does have a slight lag when you push the home button but it's literally a millisecond long. Who the hell cares?
If you're on the fence about the phone, go and get it...NOW!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
I was thinking about this myself yesterday. There's a line of tolerance that you have to set for yourself with these things. Sometimes I think that it's not that the people don't like the phone, it's that they are having the "grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" mentality. In the end of the day it's just a phone!

we went through this same crap when the sensaion came out. people were like this phone is such a piece of crap cause i ordered waffles and the waitress brought me eggs....i feel your pain most of these people with this phone will go away once development kicks off for this awesome device. I know its hard but try to ignore the stupid posts and they usually go away.
Is it possible that the home screen button lag is because double tapping home opens the touchwiz "voice talk" feature, and the phone hesitates for a fraction of a second incase it's a double tap? Do other non-tmobile SGSII's have this feature and behave the same way?
good point blue biscuit!!
Good call, can't wait to be able to remove that feature with CM7 (at least re-map it). If you guys want a nice sign of speed go to the gallery. I'm blown away at how fast all the images just drop into the gallery when you load it. Maybe that's just me though, coming from the HD2 with android...
With new phones comes new complaints and true they will go away once the phone has been out for a while. I really think people just need a way to vent. I got this phone and it didn't have siri. The phone looked like an iphone but didn't have itunes. Irritating but it's as easy as just ignore their posts.
Seriously people, if you have a problem just ask for help. Starting a new thread to ***** and moan is not going to solve the problem. If you get no help here and want to return it. Do it queitly and move on. Now I'm going back to playing with my phone. It's going to be making me lunch in a little bit and I don't want to miss that. This thing makes great eggs.

Very good question. The home button lag is odd and seems deliberate, no?
Regardless, there is no question this phone is slower than the other SGS II.

An early leak of HTC's Sense 3.5 running on (over) ICS....
http://goo.gl/JaIyb
(I had to watch quite a bit of this just to make sure it WAS Android 4 running on that phone.)
IMO, Samsung kinda gets a small pass because Touchwiz isn't THAT intrusive, andI just gotta ask...
What in the world is HTC thinking?
^That "interpretation" of ICS is going to sell about zero point zero phones for them in the future.
(and no, I don't even know what language this is in, and the shaky video seems to be just that-not Rom related... Apparently, this build was just released for the Sensation, and most everything works on it, or so I've read.
P.S. : Moderators:
I posted this here, because I know that most of us prolly have owned an HTC device in the past, and have our own opinions about Sense, and that some people might find it interesting.

My balls just went up into my stomach.
These oems need to wake up.
There's absolutely no need to skin ics.

This looks awful!
Just for the record, the rom is in Finnish.
WTF?! Why would they do that. I haven't owned an Evo but it looks like Sense does now minus swiping apps to kill them. Maybe they are just sticking with the formula that has worked for them in the past. Is this real and not some port hackenstein build?

Yeah, sense 1.0 was great during android 1.x-2.1, now its not needed and slows up development for stock and aftermarket. Google should put their foot down with 4.1 - no vendor skins. Let the hardware options speak for themselves. Acer/Dell/HP don't skin W7 when they deploy laptops and still are able to distinguish themselves. Plus with ICS apparently supporting more secure exchange environments, AOSP finally is an option for me.
Lol looks like sense on GB, touchwiz is much lighter and hopefully they go with a modded stock launcher instead of twlauncher 4.0. Anything beats Rosie either way

I think it'll only take one time for it to be proven how it could work as a business model:
If HTC would say, release their next major device like this:
"The HTC Edge, featuring the world's first quad-core processor in a mobile phone, Google's newest version of Android 4.0, and HTC's very own Sense 4.errrrrrrrrrr."
"Scratch that.^"
"Featuring ONLY Google's newest version of Android 4.0, in the spotlight, for you to enjoy the fastest, smoothest, Android Experience possible. "
"Only from HTC."
(I'd go buy that **** in a heartbeat.)
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Wow, way to ruin a good thing. Much rather have TW than that. Why even skin a good thing anyway???WHY????
Imagine buying the newest HTC phone with ICS on it without knowing anything about what to expect with the newest version of Sense:
You leave Best Buy or wherever on launch day, after waiting in line all morning.... You get to your car, and you're kinda shaking with excitement as the phone boots up, you activate it, and you sign into your gmail....
You get the "Your google account is now linked to this device" message and you hit the home button to check things out....
Next, you:
...... (are confused...)
...... wut.
...... "Hold up, what is th... "
...... (flings homescreen, trying to find SOMETHING that resembles what you've seen on the Gnex...)
..... (re-checks Android version #, just to be sure.)
..... (looks around, just to make sure you aren't on "Punk'd")
..... (lastly, screams with rage and slams new phone onto concrete.)

As stupid as it is until the day El Goog puts it's foot down on UI standardization this will continue to happen with Motoblur, Touchwiz and--the worst offender--Sense. I'm sure there are more I'm not aware of (LG I'm looking at you).
The manufacturer sees this as another way to brand their device, make it unique...stand out from the legions of other Android phones. HTC (and to a much tinier degree Samsung) is also trying to set up their own ecosystem on the side by providing services that either they get a cut of (whatever HTCs movie service is called, I forget) or they get ad revenue/monetizable user data. HTC obviously seems especially furiously jealous of Apple's vertical integration provided by not just building the phone (which HTC does), but also the whole of the operating system (which Sense is an attempt to do) and the app store/itunes (which their movie service--and I'm sure music and market etc are in the making)....and nearly everybody is in the user-data market.
Frankly, from a purely business point-of-view, you can't blame these companies for at least trying. I don't have to like it...and I don't. But the vast majority of people don't notice let alone care. I don't actually think the differentiation thing is working for them at all. There is not a single non-geek that I know that has purchased a device just because of the UI overlay or any of the integration they may provide.
I also have not known a single non-geek to ever get a different brand of phone and even so much as mention a difference between an OG Droid and an HTC anything....so, I'm not so sure that a> people would even miss it and more importantly b> that it is even working. But, given that they don't appear to be losing anything for trying they will likely not stop until Google says 'knock it off', but, I doubt they will...while it seems unlikely Google wouldn't want to scare a major OEM off of the platform. Sense on WinMo is nearly indistinguishable from Android to 99% of all people. The same would go for Touchwiz on Bada....WebOS is now open source too, I believe.
Did I watch the same video as everyone else? Because what I saw looked fine. Jaw-dropping? No. Hideous? Also, no. It's a decent, cohesive skin that keeps HTC's look while maintaining all the functionality. Looks fine. I prefer a cleaner look, but I wouldn't be pissed off by it.

Taken in a different context, you could very well have just described the effectiveness (or lack there of) of advertising...lol
Honestly, i don't see why they don't just compete in the hardware market? I mean, in all honesty, that's what's driving the smartphone explosion, not manufacturer skins.
Manufacturer software, though, that's an entirely different story. Like Samsung adding all-share. But this is easily done (manufacturers adding these bits of functionality) without messing with the core system interface, and you'd end up in a better scenario: easier and faster software upgrades

I agree. Honestly to me, with ICS all the vendor skins look more and more like a custom launcher and some widgets for added value. The settings and multitasking look very similar to ICS. I think the fact that we are seeing vendor builds on ICS so soon after launch is indicative of the similarity to the stock OS.
Really, we shouldn't be asking for Google to lock anything down user interface wise as that's just one step closer to apple. If Google locked out oems, they would have to stop users from using custom launchers as well. The only thing Google should mandate is that vendors release full source code (including proprietary drivers) for any android release. That would do a lot to clean up problems, if vendors knew their code was actually getting looked at by millions of eyes.

I couldn't watch more than a minute of that video. I'm sooooo turned off by Sense after having been on the Evo 4G. I jumped on the AOSP train and never got off. I guess these phone companies feel the need to differentiate themselves from the pack. They do so by throwing their ugly UI on top of android OS.

Given that Google is at the epicenter of this peculiar universe that may well be the actual context. Always remember that Google is an advertising company, first and foremost. The, nearly 100% free, awesome technology is just a very fortunate side effect.

If they did that they would have absolutely nothing differentiating the different phones besides price, for the most part...and that's a race to the bottom. Nobody wants that. It's like the difference between Apple's margins and everybody elses.
I'm not entirely convinced that we aren't already on a race to the bottom. Note my earlier comments on the lack of effectiveness of this type of branding to most people. (There are Sense fanboys, Touchwiz enthusiasts and even, shudder, Motoblur fans).
If they want to be Apple so bad why not go it alone and make your own damn OS and marketplace....oh yeah, that boat sailed 5 years ago. Apple won't license iOS. Android is king of the commodity currently. This is all they really can do.
Manufacturer software, though, that's an entirely different story. Like Samsung adding all-share. But this is easily done (manufacturers adding these bits of functionality) without messing with the core system interface, and you'd end up in a better scenario: easier and faster software upgrades

100% Agreed. I think in a couple years when the dust settles we will probably see exactly that happen. Once Android stops getting "major updates" constantly. Once manufacturers stop pumping out a giant range of phones constantly and just make one really awesome flagship phone in 2 or 3 sizes and let the last model of really-awesome-phone be the second tier model instead of ****ting up the store fronts with a nonstop range of brand new crap. Once Apple has been squished back into their extremely profitable but small niche corner (just like with the Mac VS PC in the 80's). Once the 'next big thing' comes along that blows minds and changes and integrates society and technology just a little more.
Until then every Android handset maker is going to try to make a unique image and name for their small shop in the mall food-court that is the current Android landscape. lol

..but you're being replaced by the Droid Pro+, a slower, uglier, bulkier phone with a low rez screen.
Even by looking at the picture, you can see how horrible the screen on the Pro is compared to the HOX but that doesnt matter. I need my phone to reply back to texts, jot down notes, and input things in my calendar and i feel that the best, and quickest way to do this would be on a phone with physical keys. Oh and it feels great to have my four menu keys back.
I dont know what it is but i just couldnt get use to the on screen keyboard. Even using different keyboards(swiftkeys, ics keyboard, thumb keyboard, etc) i just found it really frustrating. I still think the iphone has by far the best onscreen keyboard.
Anyways, im not entirely putting the HOX out of comission, I still might use it as a weekend phone but as my daily driver, I'll be using the Pro+ until Motorola releases a better version.

My wife had the same issue when she went from a real keyboard to an on-screen one.
However, after trying various different one we have settled on Swiftkey 3 beta and now she would never go back.
Give it a little longer and you will see the benefits, hopefully.
Have you tried the keyboard on the 9900? It is heads and tails above any other keyboard I have used the this swift key is the second best.

I think you missed the part where i said i needed something that would allow me to type quickly and jot down notes, everyone else seemed to give me some input, some alternatives and even some keyboards to try for my one x and your the only one complaining about my thread..but yes, you best me on your way unless you have something useful to say.
Anyways.. ill give swype a try.. i had tried it on my HTC Evo a while ago but i wasnt a big fan of it, hopefully theyve worked out the kinks. Thanks for the feedback people, maybe I wont put the Hox down after all lol

And why is that? Cause im not praising the hox? Cause im not saying how awesome it is and how it trumps any other phone out there right now? Im not bashing the phone in anyway, im simply saying that its not for me as a daily driver. It an awesome phone and its a beautiful built phone but as a daily driver, its not ideal for me.

No, because this is the XDA Developers forum, not Facebook. These forums are for interesting topics that are informative and useful, not someone's personal opinion about whether a physical keyboard is better than a software one. This forum is for that.
I don't mean to cause offence, but there are A LOT of these kind of threads.
@Op,
Another boring thread about the HOX being bad....
How many of these threads has been opened?
If you don't like it go to the machine you like to my opinion but stop cluttering the board and bother us with this BS.
Post is in the wrong section as well, if you are so full of keyboards and Droid Pro+ you should have tried XDA General section to hit a 'wider audience' with your 'experience'.
Pffff... bye!
OP, for lack of a kinder way to phrase it, and the fact it's been a long day...
Shutup.
If you want to point out serious issues, ways the community can help you with that, then by all means that is what XDA is for.
What it isn't for....is to write a tribute to your One X, saying goodbye to it because you don't like the keyboard.
You can do that in private, just hold it up and say goodbye.
enough with these stupid stupid threads, really the worst part about the HOX
its good reviews and coverage attracted too many newbies to "try" it out
you know i made too new decisions i will never ever again advice and apple fan to buy or try an android...seriously i want me, my family and my friends to enjoy it all on our own
I LOVE MY HTC ONE X

Are you deluding yourself or just not reading the responses?
And... You specified that even with 3rd party keyboards you were not happy so why would I suggest keyboards?
This thread was simply you trolling. I know it, you know it, even the people who were politely making suggestions probably knew it. What kind souls with such humility. Not me, I call it as I see it.
Yet again another pointless thread that will be closed by the mods.
If I don't like anything about ANY phone I have I don't broadcast it to the nation I try and find a solution to the problem. If I can't find one I'll live with it. No doubt there are things you don't like on your replacement, are you gonna broadcast to the world again and get another phone?
Please mods close the thread.

My friend is willing to ditch his iphone for an S3, but he needs an easy solution to mimic his physical ringer switch. He needs to easily turn off his ringer from his holster. Any ideas? Thanks.
Use the volume down button to turn the ringer all the way off.

you could use an NFC sticker
Theres an app called shush that lets you program the phone so it will automatically go silent at certain times of the day that you specify.
I use setting profiles, it lets me set profiles then conditions and actions for each profuile.
It knows when im at any of my offices, at home, asleep, in a meeting (calendar item) by gps, cells, time, lots of other criteria.
Its a little sketchy to program at first, but I have moved my settings to 4 phones now and its really slick. I dont have to remember to flip a switch even.
If you pull down the notification bar there is a tab for silent /vibrate/ normal
Obviously before u holster it

Use to use settings profiles. Now I use Llama. Silence based on time/location.
Thanks guys. These options are cool, but a hard sell over the convenience of a physical master sound button. Let me know if you guys can think of anything else. Custom rom holding down the power button or something of the like?

I would have been an asshole if I said that lol
My buddy has a iphone every time he sees me he starts to reconsider his phone but he doesn't want to switch hes afraid of horrible battery life he had a older android phone before he got his iPhone so he like many other people are afraid of it lol

Although I agree 1000%, I can certainly understand of an iphone user who is reluctant to switch again when they have finally got one that "just works"
An engineer friend of mine struggled thru all the pain of a slow/laggy POS android phone with all the asinine work arounds like juice defender/custom kernels etc just to eke out a little more battery life.
Since he is not into customizing the phone AT ALL, you couldn't drag him kicking and screaming back to ANY Android phone at this point..........
Nah, I'm just kidding around. I had a 3GS before my Inspire. It was OK, but that was about it. I don't miss it one bit, but I don't begrudge anyone for wanting simplicity.
No button to switch on the side like the iPhone. But I could also list so many things that the iPhone can't do or lacks compared to the Galaxy S3 so I don't mind that at all.
I have the iPhone 4S too and still enjoy my LTE GS3 over it.
I'm sorry but I think this thread is pointless. He either wants a better all around phone or he wants to stay with his old outdated pos phone. There is no physical button able to mute the phone with the screen off. If that is the dealbreaker he definitely has some issues he needs to work out with himself

I would disagree the OP is asking is there any solution for a specific criteria he has. The reasons behind it maybe questionable but he is still asking does the phone have some functionality he may not know about, which is fine. The whole point of this community is to share and exchange ideas, tips, tricks and educate. There is nothing wrong with someone asking a question about the phone at all many have found features out about their phones that they had no idea it had. What I am struggling with is what your post has at all to offer other than your personal opinion about another phone manufacturer and a potential insult to the OP about his friend. Maybe in the future rather than post something of no value you don't post or post something that has value to others.

Coming from a Treo, a while back, I agree about the usefulness of the ringer switch. It is a nice simple, elegant solution and one of the things I miss about the Treo. The best solution I have found is one of the profile managers like someone mentioned. You can set it to silence the phone whenever a calendar appointment has a word you choose like "meet" or "call" or "lunch".

Here is what I don't like:
1. When you wake up the phone from sleep there is a noticeable delay.
2. After you hang up the phone, there is a delay of about 3-4 seconds before you are brought back to the dialer.. Until then you're just shown the "Call ended.." message. Thats quite annoying because you have to wait another 3-4 seconds before re-dialing.
3. MTP.. I have never gotten it to work on this phone. After downloading the official Galaxy Note II drivers from samsungs website all I ever get is "Hardware missing" or something like that. I really miss the plain old USB Mass Storage.
4. When you bring the phone to your ear the screen turns black, (thats good), but after you take it back down to see the screen, there's a gap of about 2 seconds before it turns back on. very annoying.
So these are the 4 things I have noticed that I don't like.

I think if you press the back button or home button to go back to whichever screen you need, it works based on my experience.
Like if i just ended a call, pressing the home button takes me home right away without any delay.

What if you wanted to redial? Try it. You can't get back to the dialer without waiting 3 seconds.

You are complaining about common problems on different phones.

I hate how you have to press home to go back to the home screen after an end call. I want it to go direct to the home screen after a call ends. I had to install an app for that: "On Call End". Works great.

I don't think he is complaining, more just expressing his thoughts.
If they are common problems on different phones then that means exactly that, different phones. Not all phones. I'm not trying to be rude but I think all the OP was trying to say is that the four things he listed kinda bothers him, nothing more, nothing less.

The biggest complain I have with the Note 2 is the stylus not able to control the menu and back buttons.
I agree with you, that is the most annoying thing about this phone by far. It's one of the biggest reasons I don't use the stylus me consistently. Great point.

While I do agree that these problems may be minor: With all due respect, this is a website about mobile devices and development, and this thread is specifically for the issues regarding the user experience of the T-mobile Note 2.
There is nothing to say that the OP did not start a blog for starving families in third world countries on an appropriate website, or that he lacks common sense and or compassion towards major economic problems. . . as is implied by your remark.
Furthermore, problems must be addressed, not ignored. Many minor problems compounded can become a major one, eroding away the cumulative ease of use and overall responsiveness of the user experience.
Many people like myself regard our phones as valuable business tools rather than toys. It is important to have a high performance tool to efficaciously compete in today's "hi-tech" market.
Getting edge only speeds when using it unlocked on AT&T :banghead: yeah theres so little flaws I had to blame something it cant control .... yet.

I didn't like that it sometimes didn't want to charge as A/C...even though it was plugged in the wall it thought it was charging through USB which took for ever. Changed the USB cable and it seems to be working good now. So I had 1 thing I didn't like...not anymore! There's nothing I don't like about this phone! Ha!

Excuse me? Yes, we live in America and can afford nice things. That said, if we are spending $300, or as much as $700 or $800 off contract, we expect these products to continue to improve over time. The intent of this thread was clearly a constructive one. Developers can't know what we want improved if we do not voice our opinions. Get off your moral high horse.
I think the white is too warm or dirty in my taste.
