ICS Carrier IQ Substitute - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I could be wrong, but it looks like Sprint/Samsung have put a diagnostic app back in (similar to carrier IQ). Not sure where it is in the app settings, but you can opt out in the about phone settings. Hopefully in the actual eventual ota they let the user choose on first boot instead.
FB17 ICS version

I think this is their way of using Carrier IQ and the average user wont even think about what it is or disabling it so they win either way.

newalker91 said:
If you're referring to com.android.samsungtest.SlateTest, then no it is not CarrierIQ in any form. Slate is a diagnostics tool that we service centers run that tests the radios and basic functions of the phone.

I am referring to the consumer facing diagnostics tool that comes activated in the fb17 about phone settings. It appears not to be related to the fact that it is a dev build.

I know they announced work with Smith Micro, but I think that is only for data offloading, although Smith Micro does something very similar to Carrier IQ.
It is possible that at some point they may also go back to Carrier IQ as well. I think that would take place once all the lawsuits and questions regarding the EULA etc have been answered.

Yes, I don't like being spied on and don't want sprint knowing the apps I use on my phone and how often I use them. Oh, you use a root app, no warranty for you...or you use a tethering app, lets add 20 dollars to your bill.

Sprint doesn't care if you root. They've put out memos saying that it doesn't void warranty ... the tethering ... well, that I'm sure they'd be interested in. That's money out of their pockets. lol

Just remember however this is a TEST build. right now Samsung is trying to see where things are going wrong as well as Sprint since they are most likely testing this on their network as well. If it's still there come OTA then it's something to worry about but till that point and time it would be nice to help samsung try and fix their issues.

I'd have to agree with you. While I am completely against spying of any sort without my input, this is a test build. This isn't a required update, nobody is forcing it down anyones throat. Everyone running it choose to install it. It's great that people are keeping a close eye on the movements of these companies but until there is legitimate cause for concern ie. an official release, nobody should get up in arms about this.

eh I'm here or there with that part right now. My reason is this with the builds being released (I'm sure some Sprint employees are using the build with devices in a test center) this could very well be to cover Sprints and samsungs butt if someone does see this app installed and it lets them know the reason for it as well. I do agree with you I don't like this stuff on my phone when it comes to an official release however right now most people (I myself till I went back to a Stock rom) were running an Alpha that does have issues so sending the data to Samsung to help them I don't see a problem with as it could work out well for us in the long run with a much better OTA release.

i care more about freeing up RAM (thanks to the commenter that has killed it with no side effects)
but really does everyone think samsung is using the reports from all of us running leaked builds?? righhhhht and dont think they dont know who should and shouldnt be.

[Q] spy apps/software??

I know similar questions have been asked before and information won't be easy to obtain from anyone regarding this but I know so many poeple have the knowledge to answer. I obviously don't want to use a subscription service but here is my dilemma.
Yes I am trying to spy, however I own both devices and pay for the entire bill just granting the phone for use as is to my current girlfriend, I'm not accusing her of cheating however she is hiding something and its all within the texts she deletes, those texts are transmitted to and from the device I allow her to use, just looking for any options I have aside from shelling out hundreds or thousands on something that can be easily accomplished, however if the information is sensitive I don't want it uploaded to the web, just more of a forward type of thing I suppose but definately hidden from her view, she isn't tech savvy, but our evos are both rooted and custom Rom etc. If anyone could help me with this, that would be super. App / software / source / service doesn't matter to me.
cool story bro, get a new girlfriend and leave the spying to the spy's. if you do not trust her, let her go.

A buddy of mine suspected his wife was cheating and she wouldn't admit to it. He decided to sift through her emails. He found she was, had proof, divorced her and is now happily married to a faithful woman. Just sayin.....had he not done that he would be far worse off. There's definately better ways to do it.....but every relationship and every person is different right?
That's weird, I thought he was asking for help with finding an app. Guess I missed the part where he asked for a bunch of relationship advice....

Dude you should learn to accept different opinions otherwise life gets boring. There is no need u to become cyankgenmod's lawyer because they do not need one. The facts regard my first post and you like it or not that is the truth. Sammy sold 20 million units of this device. Go to the international forum of the s3 and lets say you find 2000 users on that forum. Now do the math, how many percent of the overall share are these users? And that is what i am telling you even if theh stop supporting the galaxy still sammy does not get hurt at all. I said cyanogenmod was great two years ago when the android os was not so developed but now they lack ots of features. And i can give you many examples of what features they lack. Camera?svoice?smart stay? Etc etc. What are your arguments other than attacking me and not the points i make? I do not use most of those features sammy included this time but still that can make somebody think well maybe this cyanogenmod is getting lil bit behind. That is not an attack to cyanogenmod cuz i currently am using codename rom and it is great but for most part of those 20million gs3 owners cyanogenmod is not seen as u see it=god.

I can agree with the statements regarding "missing features" when comparing CM to TW. There are some things that TW has that are very nice, and become features you start to depend on as part of a great user experience.
However, CM10 has allowed me to run Jelly Bean as a reliable DD and use Google Now which completely changes the game for me. Yes, TW will update soon but the point is Cm did it already. That's just a small piece of the picture - CM has provided us with support for our phones for YEARS, and are a HUGE driving force in the Android community.
I think it would be wise for CM to start looking at adding more unique features to their builds, things TW doesn't have. But can they compete with Samsung on the highest level? Maybe.. maybe not. Samsung has really stepped it up with TW, and I applaud them for that. However I am a big fan of Android and this whole Tizen move that Samsung is doing really irritates me. Samsung is just like any other conglomerate, they want to hold all the cards when everything is said and done. Which means they have to eliminate Android to build their OWN ecosystem, and don't think they aren't. Samsung has their own movies to sell. They don't want you buying them from the Play Store.
I'm not too fond of Samsung's long term goals. They do make some of the best phones in the world, no doubt about that.. but I am an Android fan, a Google fan, first.
Which is why I see myself back on a Nexus at some point in the future.. probably whatever the best Nexus is after I get sick of the Note 2 (hey, I DID say they make some great phones..)
But losing CM support would definitely suck.. however I can't say I blame them

Speak for yourself. I'd love it if our dev section didn't have any garbage that bricks peoples phones. This guy's been on a roll for a while. Honestly I'd love it if he'd stop dev'ing it'd save people a lot of time.

+ a googleplex, this guy wants recognition without putting in work or recognizing anybody else's. He needs to stop pestering us and go get some psychological help.
So anyone know what happened to his "illusuon" ROM post? I was waiting for a mod but went to bed and when I woke up it was gone. I'm guessing he deleted it to avoid the ban hammer that was coming.
I was looking for it too. I think it should have been up so everybody can see it. It was a.nicr entertainmemt for a chance lol Lets just hope that he doesnt come back with another name.

Sounds like a problem for the S4 not sure if it will implicate us here on the S3. And yeah, the firmware version is skipping from 4.1.2 to 4.3 and leaving the 4.2.x branch out completely which I think was a genius move. At least we won't be too far behind when Kitkat is released.

It is a problem on the S4. But it's in the bootloader, just firmware updates.... well update. Just something to watch out for, I guess.

Yeah. The weird thing about that bootloader update though is I thought the S4 was meant to be an open device hence the fact there's a Google edition. That's a bit weird. If they keep this up we may see an influx of users continue onward to HTC and Sony which as of late have been working with the community.

Chainfire warned us about all this two years ago. And I'm sure it'll affect us too.
4.3 will have selinux enabled for us as well. Plus we have had a pretty good view of the fact that Sammys built-in warranty killers have been evolving with each upgrade. We will just have to be careful when updating is all. Dont do the full update. Hopefully most of the restrictions will be in the bootloader...wishful thinking, I know! But not allowing us to downgrade once we've updated??? That's just wrong! What if 4.3 sucks?! As that article pointed out, their reason for updating the S3 in the first place is likely just to sell more Gears.
One things for sure, it ought to be interesting!
I hate when developer friendly companies turn out to be not so friendly.

I think we can call it confirmed as it every source site i read says about the same thing.

The worst problem we have to face is the fact Samsung is a successful entity in the mobile industry. Will other open-source Android OEM's follow suit in an attempt to stay as close to Samsung as possible and as a result, start closing their sources, and locking down the bootloader?
My hope is that other companies do just the opposite. A smaller company could gain more traction and do it faster if they become known as developer friendly. (As long as the devices are competitive as well of course). Then they'd have people from forums such as these begin to take notice. And how many of us have had friends and family ask for our advice or recommendations? It seems to me that'd be a good start.
Another point against companies such as Samsung doing things like locking us down that I rarely see discussed, is how much free support is given for their products! Turn on the dev community and they lose a lot of that benefit as well! I know there were a lot of people who stopped buying HTC because they made it so difficult to do anything! I know I was one!
I know we are a very small percentage of their overall consumer base, but I do think we still have enough influence that we ought not be ignored! It seems they may disagree though.....Or maybe I'm just wrong!

This is why I am usually reluctant to update and try to wait a bit before I do. I think that even before they get an upgrade off the ground there may be workarounds and hacks for all of their insipid douchebaggery. Regardless, you have got to love Chainfire for all his work in making their stupid little efforts come to nought.
Make something hackproof, make better hackers. I'd rather they not lock the bootloaders on the new update, otherwise I may have to just stick with AOSP for new versions. In that case, might as well upgrade my phone to something not so Samsung.
