Sounds like a problem for the S4 not sure if it will implicate us here on the S3. And yeah, the firmware version is skipping from 4.1.2 to 4.3 and leaving the 4.2.x branch out completely which I think was a genius move. At least we won't be too far behind when Kitkat is released.

It is a problem on the S4. But it's in the bootloader, just firmware updates.... well update. Just something to watch out for, I guess.

Yeah. The weird thing about that bootloader update though is I thought the S4 was meant to be an open device hence the fact there's a Google edition. That's a bit weird. If they keep this up we may see an influx of users continue onward to HTC and Sony which as of late have been working with the community.

Chainfire warned us about all this two years ago. And I'm sure it'll affect us too.
4.3 will have selinux enabled for us as well. Plus we have had a pretty good view of the fact that Sammys built-in warranty killers have been evolving with each upgrade. We will just have to be careful when updating is all. Dont do the full update. Hopefully most of the restrictions will be in the bootloader...wishful thinking, I know! But not allowing us to downgrade once we've updated??? That's just wrong! What if 4.3 sucks?! As that article pointed out, their reason for updating the S3 in the first place is likely just to sell more Gears.
One things for sure, it ought to be interesting!
I hate when developer friendly companies turn out to be not so friendly.

I think we can call it confirmed as it every source site i read says about the same thing.
http://www.androidauthority.com/android-4-3-coming-to-samsung-galaxy-s3-and-s4-next-month-263690/

The worst problem we have to face is the fact Samsung is a successful entity in the mobile industry. Will other open-source Android OEM's follow suit in an attempt to stay as close to Samsung as possible and as a result, start closing their sources, and locking down the bootloader?

My hope is that other companies do just the opposite. A smaller company could gain more traction and do it faster if they become known as developer friendly. (As long as the devices are competitive as well of course). Then they'd have people from forums such as these begin to take notice. And how many of us have had friends and family ask for our advice or recommendations? It seems to me that'd be a good start.
Another point against companies such as Samsung doing things like locking us down that I rarely see discussed, is how much free support is given for their products! Turn on the dev community and they lose a lot of that benefit as well! I know there were a lot of people who stopped buying HTC because they made it so difficult to do anything! I know I was one!
I know we are a very small percentage of their overall consumer base, but I do think we still have enough influence that we ought not be ignored! It seems they may disagree though.....Or maybe I'm just wrong!

This is why I am usually reluctant to update and try to wait a bit before I do. I think that even before they get an upgrade off the ground there may be workarounds and hacks for all of their insipid douchebaggery. Regardless, you have got to love Chainfire for all his work in making their stupid little efforts come to nought.

Make something hackproof, make better hackers. I'd rather they not lock the bootloaders on the new update, otherwise I may have to just stick with AOSP for new versions. In that case, might as well upgrade my phone to something not so Samsung.

ICS Carrier IQ Substitute

I could be wrong, but it looks like Sprint/Samsung have put a diagnostic app back in (similar to carrier IQ). Not sure where it is in the app settings, but you can opt out in the about phone settings. Hopefully in the actual eventual ota they let the user choose on first boot instead.

I think this is their way of using Carrier IQ and the average user wont even think about what it is or disabling it so they win either way.

I know they announced work with Smith Micro, but I think that is only for data offloading, although Smith Micro does something very similar to Carrier IQ.
It is possible that at some point they may also go back to Carrier IQ as well. I think that would take place once all the lawsuits and questions regarding the EULA etc have been answered.

Just remember however this is a TEST build. right now Samsung is trying to see where things are going wrong as well as Sprint since they are most likely testing this on their network as well. If it's still there come OTA then it's something to worry about but till that point and time it would be nice to help samsung try and fix their issues.

I'd have to agree with you. While I am completely against spying of any sort without my input, this is a test build. This isn't a required update, nobody is forcing it down anyones throat. Everyone running it choose to install it. It's great that people are keeping a close eye on the movements of these companies but until there is legitimate cause for concern ie. an official release, nobody should get up in arms about this.

eh I'm here or there with that part right now. My reason is this with the builds being released (I'm sure some Sprint employees are using the build with devices in a test center) this could very well be to cover Sprints and samsungs butt if someone does see this app installed and it lets them know the reason for it as well. I do agree with you I don't like this stuff on my phone when it comes to an official release however right now most people (I myself till I went back to a Stock rom) were running an Alpha that does have issues so sending the data to Samsung to help them I don't see a problem with as it could work out well for us in the long run with a much better OTA release.

It's up for debate. GS3 hardware is supposed to be standard across all carriers. You shouldn't have a problem. Imo if you want the best value and best data speeds go with tmobile.
I'm unsure what the specs for the international is but I believe they're all the same.

Unfortunately they are not standard. And yeah intl will always get the best development but nevertheless at the end all you need is 5 good roms. Intl got 20 roms or more but users know that half of them are just a minor modified version of the stock rom.

Samsung Put OTA System "on hold"???

Does anybody have any information to add that can possibly explain? I went to my usual 2 sites for ota releases and saw this. Had to double and triple check it! And I haven't found ANY explanation anywhere!
Basically when I checked live.samsung-updates.com I noticed the two "Notes" you can see in the screenshot. As it turns out they haven't had an ota for any device for over 2 days! I checked sammobile.com and it looks like our latest ota was their last for any device...3 days ago!
They also state that most otas for the i9300 and legacy otas have been deleted from Samsungs system!
Can anyone enlighten me as to whats going on here? Is this temporary or was UVALI8 the last ota we will get?
It just seems odd that there isnt hardly any info about this and that the update sites have seemed rather quiet about it. (Or is this something that happens enough to be normal and I just never noticed before?)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Maybe clearing them out getting ready for official.
I think there getting it ready for the i9300 Jb release
Maybe they are waiting for a fix to the NFC vulnerability before publishing anything?
Then why would they take their entire ota system offline? The i9300 wasn't the only device they had otas for. Im talking about every Samsung device worldwide is no longer getting the leaked otas.
Honestly I just threw the info about the deleted ones because it was right there.
What im curious about is why they took down the whole ota system apparently and if its temporary.
Seems like not one device has had an ota leak in 3 days. Kind of unusual I thought.
I guess not though. Oh well. Thanks anyway guys.

It has said that for a couple weeks now. They are referring to their own site that posts the otas. It went down for a few days and now needs fixing. ( notice there is no info about versions). They posted that originally saying they were on vacation and would have everything back to normal by that date.
The 2 notes Im referring to were put up yesterday and are referring to Samsungs system, not their site. (They cant get otas anymore because Samsungs OTA system is "on hold")
Also notice that they haven't had an ota for going on 3 days now while sammobile hasnt had one since our UVALI8 going on 4-5 days ago. Im pretty certain they usually have several everyday. They post otas for all Samsung devices all over the world. Or at least they used to?
On hold sounds temporary but youd think there might be a little more info about it somewhere.

No kidding! Like you said, we would think that if there was a problem or they were doing significant maintenance they would have posted SOMETHING to let people know. Thats pretty much why. I dont mind waiting however long it takes for new updates, but yeah when they just stop like that for everything it makes me wonder why.
I do understand that the otas are not official, just leaked, and may not warrant explanation from Samsung themselves, but what I posted in the op was ALL I could find! No one even discussing it just seems odd to me.
I would have thought its becsuse Sammy doesn't want these leaks getting out, but with there being established web sites devoted to getting them out for a while now, its not like they haven't known about it. Im sure they've been taking full advantage of it for testing and fixes like you find in our dev section.
But yeah, after finding no discussions or good info at all, I decided to post what I knew here. You never know who knows or found something I couldn't. Or maybe one of the guys that had a bead on the ota releases knows something theyd be willing to share?

It very well could be maintenance. But then i have to ask why they deleted the i9300 otas? Maintenance...could be. Its just the lack of any information that made me wonder. I believe the official fw updates go out as ota patches from tmobile. But you can download the full fw from Samsung or one of the ota sites. They roll out fota updates in phases so doubt they are lacking the infrastructure for it anyway.

Yay trash folder!
Dear Samsung customers,
There will be scheduled Smart Hub maintenance will occuring on Tuesday, September 25th from 9:00 PM - 5:00 AM (EST). During this time you may experience difficulties connecting to Smart Hub servers and using various functions of the Smart Hub service (App download, App launch, Smart Hub ID creation, etc). Do not setup repair service for Smart Hub issues during this time. The Smart Hub service should be restored at or shortly after 5:00 AM (EST).
Thx man. At least you got an email about that though.
I suppose it could be related if they are doing massive network upgrades or something. Otherwise one probably has no bearing on the other.

Way to completely misunderstand. Those are Exynos devices. We have Qualcomm devices.

So what? Xda community and those who use cyanogenmod are barely 1% of sammy's market share

Don't be ignorant now. They are the 99% of XDA AOSP Development.

Haha funny kid. Of sammy's market share i said. Yes iknow all xda goes crazy about cyanogenmod and i also think they used to be great but in my opinion this is just a tactic of theirs to get more donations. That is their new motto.

Or maybe you could try and do some reading before you post? No amount of donations will improve this situation. Exynos and the Mali GPU have documentation that rivals that of an IKEA instruction booklet.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

Oh hi there you back from the cave lol? Whatever idc. At the current level that touchwiz is i find cyanogenmod a holdback cuz it misses many features. Couple of years ago when manufacturers' os sucked then yes cyanogenmod was #1 but things have changed now. Probably cave people are 2 years behind and cannot realize it.

Your problem is your farfetched, outlandish assumption that laz is overly full of himself.
However you saying that he think he is so funny" says a bit about your own insecurity/ but more so immaturity.
Especially in his last post there was nothing funny about it, there were facts and opinions..

Hey guys, nothing against ANY of you, but this is that point where everyone should just stop posting lest it get out of hand and we get more locked threads and banned/suspended members.
No one ever leaves these things happy, so just leave it now, please.

It may not affect us now but I'm sure in the future all of samsung's devices will contain their exynos chips.
I'm curious if it would affect the next nexus, seeing that is supposed to be a developer phone I don't think it would but I'm guessing Samsung is making the next one

Yes the above post is overflowing with factual statements. You probably think Codeworkx is soliciting donations and this is all a ploy right? There is no helping these devices save Samsung stepping up. No amount of money wikl magically document Exynos and the Mali GPU.
And my bad, I forgot that calling someone a caveman isn't an immature attempt to be funny.. but then again it's hard for me to argue with all of the facts about soliciting donations!
I'll take Doc's advice and let you two have your little conspiracy theory.

Dude you should learn to accept different opinions otherwise life gets boring. There is no need u to become cyankgenmod's lawyer because they do not need one. The facts regard my first post and you like it or not that is the truth. Sammy sold 20 million units of this device. Go to the international forum of the s3 and lets say you find 2000 users on that forum. Now do the math, how many percent of the overall share are these users? And that is what i am telling you even if theh stop supporting the galaxy still sammy does not get hurt at all. I said cyanogenmod was great two years ago when the android os was not so developed but now they lack ots of features. And i can give you many examples of what features they lack. Camera?svoice?smart stay? Etc etc. What are your arguments other than attacking me and not the points i make? I do not use most of those features sammy included this time but still that can make somebody think well maybe this cyanogenmod is getting lil bit behind. That is not an attack to cyanogenmod cuz i currently am using codename rom and it is great but for most part of those 20million gs3 owners cyanogenmod is not seen as u see it=god.

Man. I really hope cyanogen or his team don't come and read this thread.. They've put in a hell of a lot of work for this device, they deserve nothing but thanks, we can't forget all of the great work that has stemmed from their work either... Smh

I can agree with the statements regarding "missing features" when comparing CM to TW. There are some things that TW has that are very nice, and become features you start to depend on as part of a great user experience.
However, CM10 has allowed me to run Jelly Bean as a reliable DD and use Google Now which completely changes the game for me. Yes, TW will update soon but the point is Cm did it already. That's just a small piece of the picture - CM has provided us with support for our phones for YEARS, and are a HUGE driving force in the Android community.
I think it would be wise for CM to start looking at adding more unique features to their builds, things TW doesn't have. But can they compete with Samsung on the highest level? Maybe.. maybe not. Samsung has really stepped it up with TW, and I applaud them for that. However I am a big fan of Android and this whole Tizen move that Samsung is doing really irritates me. Samsung is just like any other conglomerate, they want to hold all the cards when everything is said and done. Which means they have to eliminate Android to build their OWN ecosystem, and don't think they aren't. Samsung has their own movies to sell. They don't want you buying them from the Play Store.
I'm not too fond of Samsung's long term goals. They do make some of the best phones in the world, no doubt about that.. but I am an Android fan, a Google fan, first.
Which is why I see myself back on a Nexus at some point in the future.. probably whatever the best Nexus is after I get sick of the Note 2 (hey, I DID say they make some great phones..)
But losing CM support would definitely suck.. however I can't say I blame them

OMG, Why Hasn't T-Mobile Released Android "L" yet

I'm surprised we don't have any people asking (cough whinning) that the dev's don't have a "L" release ready for them yet, or begging for ETA's.

Easy answer, Android "L" has not been released to the masses at all..
I think your refering to Android 4.4.2 Kitkat which should be released any day now.
Likely and wishfully they will give us 4.4.4 instead.. But "L" Has not been even announced yet

Why wishfully do they you want 4.4.4 so bad over 4.4.2? It's a few minor security updates, nothing functionally different from 4.4.2
And "L" has been announced. I was being sarcastic being usually with an announcement like this, people start up already asking when will my device get it.
Pretty sure Towelroot wont work as of 4.4.4. Maybe even 4.4.3. Not sure on that one though.

I read somewhere, I think it was in the S5 Forums, if I find it.. I'll post it..
but it read somewhere that the Towelroot was NOT affected by the update..
Can't quote, but I think I saw it on a XDA Youtube Video..
EDIT: and at the time you mentioned when will "L" be announced..
At that current time, Google said they would make their "official" announcement the following day..
EDIT2: Here is all the info needed on Towelroot: http://lifehacker.com/towelroot-roots-android-kitkat-devices-in-one-tap-no-p-1592226618
I have a feeling that our beloved S3 won't be able to handle the L. I know it's only a dev preview but even the Nexus 5 lagged quite a bit.

I had read that the exploit used by towelroot has been patched on all kernels dated after June 6.
I am ready for the 4.3 or 4.4 already..if Canada can get it....what about us ( no pun intended)

I'm late but that's not the case. Nexus 5 at least had an update to a kernel past June 6th to 4.4.4 and the exploit is still unpatched. Some devices may have it merged or not but rest assured this will be patched by July's end. This will certainly not work on L when you guys get pushed AOSP to state the obvious. Here's to hoping you guys don't get an official update that breaks root.
Seeing a stupid comment on Google Play about an app you love and marking it as "spam". You've done it too.
I doubt we will get an update like that, though I won't discount the possibility. If what ive heard is correct (and I have no reason to believe its not), Samsung sent T-Mobile the final build for our updates weeks ago. Just for whatever reason they seem to just be sitting on it. Its not like T-Mobile to do something like that, but considering we were usually the first or second to get updates on the S3, and just about every other variant has been updated, I dont see any other viable explanation.
In the AT&T forums, a couple of the Canadian carriers (Rogers and Fido I think) got another kk update from NE6 to NF2 a couple days ago. Those who updated are reporting Towelroot and Framaroot no longer work.
Not that it matters too much for us here though. Our bootloaders are not locked so we can still root by several other methods if need be. I feel bad for Verizon and AT&T S5 owners though....they may have to start yet another massive bounty thread!
