Okay, I've been browsing xda since having a tmobile g1, and while I appreciate everything the developers do to advance things, im kind of annoyed with kingxclick or whatever name he goes by. It just seems to me he appears in various forums and takes existing roms, modifies them very slightly, and claims them as his own. He did that on the g1 forum and here he is on the evo forum doing the same. Has he contributed anything original, or is he just the hack I think he is?

He's complaining about a developer he believes takes someone's rom [say mikfroyo for example] makes a few base changes, and then says its his rom.

That's what I figured. The sad thing is that he pops up on the evo forum and nobody knows what he's up to. If he is providing fixes and developing his own roms, that would be one thing, but if he's just taking various rom fixes and implementing them in "king's evo! 8.73!" or whatever other flashy named rom, he is a disgrace to true developers and he should just be banned again.

Well I'm not sure I mean according to some all I do is swap out some PNG files and then call it my own. I will say this when I used my own base everyone wanted me to use Calkulins.
Well, considering his site isn't even active anymore (404's on the whole site), I don't think we'll be seeing much of him.
I find this post a little amusing. I remember when he was making kernels. I followed very closely, was excited about the next new King Kernel! Almost donated to him!. GE was asking for donations because he didn't even OWN an EVO!. And still made good kernels!
...then one day he posts on his twitter that he finally got his!.... Vibrant?. I questioned this move on his kernel forum and stated this seemed like a 2 faced move. Asking for donations to buy an evolution to better develop his kernels, only.to buy something else.
I was chastised for questioning the great king on his thread! And he even commented saying "geez, lighten up, I'm still saving for an evo. They are sold out here is all". I stopped visiting that thread and stopped using his kernels. I felt that was a really low move and was amazed so many people followed him after that.

I guess I just figured that was him on the evo android development forum with "kings super ultra froyo!" and "kings gb amazing cool rom!" or whatever theyre called a page or two into the forum

99% of ROM makers do the exact same thing as him... They are just taking pieces others developed and putting them together. Most of the ROM makers/chefs couldn't code their way out of a box.

I'd be pissed as well if my rom was 30 pages deep and had 100 users I feel your pain. Lol its ok zone I hear your frustration but you'll be ok dude.
Ok. So i have been away from the form for a couple of weeks (family emergency) and I noticed that some of the dev's are packing up and going to different forums JoelZ9614, ihtfp69. What did I miss?
I'm kinda wondering that too tbh
devs should just ignore the crap and keep doing what they do.
Stuff like this makes me want to stay with CM even more. CM is my first love for custom ROMs and my favorite so far due to it's speed and features and open source model. Since they packed up quietly it just would make you speculate.
I like looking at the front page of Inc development to see what's new. We'll still be seeing new ROM on xda, just from fewer devs.

I thought I would stick with this phone way past my contract because of the development but I might have to second guess that if the developers become too hard to locate . Like they say " There is a beginning to every end "

I had not paid attention before today, but I noticed that Calkulin is not a recognized developer! I looked up what is required and he seems to fit the bill.
Maybe he has not filled out an application. I think in his case the moderators should upgrade him to Recognized Developer with or without an application. When I first purchased this phone and was trying to decide on which rom to start with, it became obvious that he was recognized even without the title. I saw more than one person posted that they bought this phone because they saw him developing for it. He is very involved with every leak or upgrade. His interaction with everyone is exemplary. His work provides a good base for other developers working with our phone.
Either way, Thanks Calk for all of your hard work. A lot of us appreciate it.
Edit: Thanks for thanking me, but I haven't developed anything. Go find something of Calk's that you have not thanked him for and thank him. He is the one that deserves it! And remember to thank the other developers and people that help.
I assume that maybe he doesn't want to have that status. He is most definitely a Dev though. I've used his ROM's since the Windows mobile days.... Very smart man =)

I totally agree on this one... before cm9 came his from is the only thing I would run as a dd.... I would play with others but always end up back at calk!

I think that everyone agrees with you. He is too busy developing to care if he has a title on this site. It hasn't and won't keep him from developing. I have seen a number of recognized developers around the forums and thought that he deserved it. In the OP I said that he maybe hadn't filled out an application, and he probably has not and doesn't care.

I'm quite sure this is the deal.
He'd been developing for the OG EVO for a long time here on XDA as well. He knows he's a great Dev, the community knows he's a great Dev, and that's really all that matters. He obviously doesn't care about titles and I respect him for that.
I always wondered about those. Seems like a lot of well know themers\devs do not have recegnized developer or themer. I would love to know how they choose.
There is only one benifit to having that title. Being able to lock and close your own threads. That's it. Other than that its just words. Everyone knows Calk is extremely talented and that's all that really matters. So I don't blame him for not worring about it. I have seen many with that title and Calk deserves it way more then they did. But ah well. If he ever wants it just has to fill out the form.
Who is Calkulin and what does he do?
PS: he saved my Samsung Moment from flying into a brick wall at 50 MPH.

I don't think anyone mentioned him being the desperate. I think that "Hint: If you're desperate for such a title, you don't deserve it. " was meant in general to others who just want to release kanged ROM's and claim all work or demand the dev status right away.

Agreed. That was my first experience with his work and then I used his work on my brother's Evo. Now I use it on this once again. I can' ask for a more dedicated developer. Glad he picked this phone up to dev on.
This is the first time I have used any of his work. He never did anything on my previous phone. But still, from what I've seen he seem like a really cool cat. Respected and rightfully so and never harsh to answer a question. I think it would be nice for him to have the title so he could have more control over his threads and such. But he doesn't need it to get mine or many others respect.

Calkulin's ROMs were my first experience with anything other than stock rooted. I like his work and think this community would miss him tremendously if he left.
I have run Calkulin's roms on, I believe, 5 devices going back several years. I also used his kitchen to cook my own Windows Mobile roms back in the day.
The man is a legend.
First of all this is a project im looking for any help to get our devices to boot sense please refrain for telling me it is not possible that i sould have gotten an htc phone if i wanted sense. I wanna live in the xda way and develop for our phones which have better internal specs then the htc phones for our carrier. Also i would like to see our phones run diffident flavors of android. Please don't tell me its not possible i have a ics rom port in alpha already i've gotten to the boot animation and it locks up i have both the logcat and rom to prove it. Im looking for help within my forum to get it running.

So, what exactly do you need?
Any help im a complete noob on how to develop im learning as i go along see if someone can kinda help me kinda understand the logcat im honestly surprised ive gotten to this point.
Have you look the sense4all projet? There is already a rom working for the internationnal GS3 (SO DON'T FLASH THIS ROM). Maybe you can try to port that one.
Also our phone have the same processor than the canadian HTC One X, maybe you can go in that direction.

I'm sure Thomas Edison got some good laughs when talking about the light bulb too. You don't know him or know what he's capable of; nor will you ever find out with this attitude. I envy his will to learn, and to take on a big challenge like this. I don't envy, I even despise attitudes like this that try to put people down who are attempting to do great things. To OP: even if you do fail at this, with the attitude you have, you will do great things.

One has gotta start somewhere, I started with ports.
To OP, try porting AOSP/AOKP ROMs from a similar device (like the other SGS3 variants). Those are way easier to port and will give you a chance to learn the basics.

In the same way guys... There's a learning curve. It could have been approached differently. But speaking from the position as he stated that he is completely new to this... If I was a sherpa and someone who had spent their life on a couch says they're interested in rock climbing, I'm not going to say, 'awesome, next week when your equipment arrives go to mount Everest and have fun!' There are ways to train and become better at things. Would suggestions have been better than simply stating that it'd not go well... Yes. And coming here to help where there are experienced devs is good hopefully their guidance will be enough to get him on the right track with this project and if not maybe he can start out smaller and build to this project.

I mean lets be realistic has sense ever been ported completly stable to a non htc device before? Dont go swimming in deep waters if you dont know how to, start off shallow then work your way up.

His jellybeast ROM was the first one that I ever flashed. Being a newb at this, I expected issues from everything I had heard about custom ROMS, but it was totally stable and ran great.

hi all I am alive.
thanks for letting me read this. honestly I needed a break for a while even though I check this and other xda threads four or five times a day still.
havent been building lately just too lazy. maybe soon I will get my steam back.
and just a note on the side: this was all my doing not anyone elses of course. I take fulll responsibility for my ignorance haha ill be back one day witha great ROM and Kernel combo I hope. no real plans for when but when I make something good I'll release it into sourceforge database.
until then peace and my pm is or was off cause I had a nasty little kid pm'ing me about how he knew everyone and was going to have me booted off xda so I just disabled my pm's... I don't need some kid trying to be abusive... anyway hes on my ignore list now. and I think I know that there are plenty of people that are cool around here. so thanks! and be good or good at it =]
