Trying to go back to GB after FB17. Brick now? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I renamed touch cwm recovery to update.zip, put it in /cache, then used the stock FB17 recovery to flash that recovery from cache.
The stock recovery restarted into cwm.
I then did clear data/factory reset, it said "formatting data, formatting cache", and then it hung up. I tried hard reset by holding power button.
Now, whenever I power on the phone, it just has the blue led lit and does nothing.
I tried power+vol up/vol down after a battery pull. Same result.
Is this thing bricked?
What are my options?
Thanks.

I've went back and forth countless times. I'd suggest using odin to go back.

Can you get into Odin mode?

I remember reading about it somewhere today. It worked for someone.
I don't know what I did wrong, should have freaking odin'ed it.
But of course, I also read about several people for whom odin didn't work.

Does a jig not work? Samsung phones are hard to brick.

They are only a few bucks. Worth trying.

Guess nobody reads around here. As much as I wanna try a leak, Ive been using parts of the day to gather knowledge before I get flash slappy. ONCE AGAIN to anbody who reads this do NOT use rom manager it has caused multiple issues. Use odin to get back to a stock recovery and THEN restore a nandroid.

Yeah get jiggy with it first.

Yeah I bet a jig will get you up and running. The only real way to brick this phone is to **** up your bootloader.

You don't even need to rename the recovery kernel to update.zip. I've been flashing EL29 kernel with FB17's stock recovery a lot to switch back and forth. Unfortunately as I have read, flashing the touch recovery is known to be problematic. I flash steady's EL29 kernel and everything went well.

Download that zip. (this the newest update released yesterday)
And download odin from http://www.mediafire.com/?u868rqz4qn0ta34
Then follows these steps:
1) Power off your phone
2) Plug the USB cable into your computer, without plugging it into your phone.
3) Hold VOL UP + VOL DOWN while plugging in the USB cable to your phone. Stop holding with 'Warning' appears.
4) Press Volume UP and start ODIN (Run as Admin on Vista and 7, just to be safe)
5) Click PDA and locate the MD5 file extracted earlier.
6) Press 'Start' and be patient. It will take a few minutes because it is a large file.
7) You phone will reboot when its finished then you can unplug the usb and reboot your phone once again.

Your phone will never read "1GB". Due to how android handles memory, some will be reserved for it and not be visible to you. Kinda like what Windows does to your hard drive.

Kernal Flash help!

I'm so sorry to bother you and thank you in advance for your taking the time to read this. I flashed the EL29 kernel for my epic 4g touch through ODIN. After it exited download mode, the splash screen now says that samsung gt-19100 with a yellow triangle. Is there a fix for that?
You can get rid of the triangle with the triangle away app from the app store, or by getting a usb jig. Rwilco's awesome website gives the step by step process.

Restoring back to nandroid.

I'm on cyanogenmod 10 beta 3 and wanted to go back to AOKP Milestone 6 but I'm having problems with superuser (and therefore cant use mobile odin) so I was wondering if I could just restore my nandroid back to EL26 via the JB recovery mode and then flash the aokp ROM through that recovery like normal? Or would that not work/brick my phone?

Hey, quick question.I'm just trying to do some reading about safety and such, and came across your post. Wouldn't it be safe to JUST Odin EL26 CWM alone? Without going back to EL29 first? Is that necessary? Again, not being a smartass and trying to call you out, I'm just really trying to get a hold on what is safe, or not, and procedures.

It sounds safe, both are quoted as being safe recoveries. I even restored a nand from a broken phone onto my replacement one yesterday so I'm sure what you're doing is far less risky. Its the wiping in non-safe recoveries that caused bricks, you should be OK as long as you don't do something stupid like pull the battery during the restore.

Someone else told me that even while restoring a nandroid backup, it still wipes data, so if you're on an unsafe kernel, it still can brick. Just so everyone knows, I was on a safe kernel when I bricked mine. Apparently there was a mis-merge that happened that caused the safe kernel to be unsafe for a few days. I was very unlucky, but its one of the risks we all take when doing this. I'm planning on odin-ing el26 kernel whenever I need recovery from here on out!

Since Odin picks up the phone see if adb will recognize the phone.
Also try kies. The emergency recovery or firmware update thing. Can't remember exactly what it is called.

If it's the wrong bootloader I think Kies will recognize it as the international version. Emergency recovery wouldn't work.

I thought you need to be able to get into 'download mode' for Odin to see your device?

That's what I meant lol sorry about that... At least you knew what I was talking about. The tool kit got my phone into download when nothing else would. It worked even when adb wouldn't Thankfully I only has that problem one time

if you got into download mode and odin'ed back to stock and it gets stuck on the "samsung with the blue logo behind it" boot screen than you have to go to stock recovery and wipe data and cache there and reboot, i had the same problem earlier but mine could get into recovery and download mode but it wouldnt wipe the data it would just turn off whenever i tried to

HOLY S-H-I-T SNACKS! I got into download mode. Rather then pressing Volume UP + Home + Power, I did same but Volume Down, and I'm Golden.
Thanks for all the help and Replys. Love this community. I root because this is what we do. I stand behind those that say Samsungs are damn near impossible to brick.

How'd you do that? I might have the same situation.
to get into the stock recovery you hold volume up and home and the power button at the same time, use the volume keys to move up and down and power button to select than wipe data and cache and reboot
