well firstly get the tmobile 2.3.6 kernel and flash it ( if you dont and revert to stock you will bootloop) then download the unroot file its in the dev section unzip it then place the tar file on pda and flash but do a factory reset before you flash the process takes about ten minutes.. reboot and well i did another factory reset.. also flash the vl1 radio as well before you flash odin..

Download that zip. (this the newest update released yesterday)
And download odin from http://www.mediafire.com/?u868rqz4qn0ta34
Then follows these steps:
1) Power off your phone
2) Plug the USB cable into your computer, without plugging it into your phone.
3) Hold VOL UP + VOL DOWN while plugging in the USB cable to your phone. Stop holding with 'Warning' appears.
4) Press Volume UP and start ODIN (Run as Admin on Vista and 7, just to be safe)
5) Click PDA and locate the MD5 file extracted earlier.
6) Press 'Start' and be patient. It will take a few minutes because it is a large file.
7) You phone will reboot when its finished then you can unplug the usb and reboot your phone once again.
Got odin link and modified the steps from KonstantinKeller restore stock thread..so thanks to him and thanks to przekret for making the flashable zip

No post in dev section. This is a little jewel I discovered months ago. Far more simple and it's official firmware, with everything included, and won't trip the counter.

Why worry about that now? There is no official ics, nor a date in which it will come. When the time comes do what needs done. It takes all of 5 minutes to flash this stuff and prepare

Yeah I know I just have never unrooted my phone so for personal reasons I just wanted to get the feel for it.. I learned a bit yesterday.. Like that crap with the kernel.. Now if I go back to cm9 it does have that ROM specific kernel right? bootloops are so friggin irritating

Your phone will never read "1GB". Due to how android handles memory, some will be reserved for it and not be visible to you. Kinda like what Windows does to your hard drive.

If all you want is Root then yes superoneclick, but if you want recovery, so you can Flash Custom ROMs it needs to be Flashed thru ODIN.
Simple Method...

Just do the Odin method sso you have access to everything. Testy me this phone is super easy to root and install recovery as opposed to other phones where adb is required. The guides in either general or the dev section are aupdated and will work nicely. 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 will both worl

Use the Odin method. I also came from the mt4g, in comparison, this is WAY easier to root. Welcome to the sgs2!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
here you go,
make sure you have the drivers downloaded.
Remembering you from the MT4g way back when.... i would just install CWM and then flash a ROM which will give you root.
so...
1.install drivers..
2.DOWNLOAD MODE: Hold +/- and plug in the phone (let it install whatever is necessary)
3.run ODIN
4.put in the recovery tar in PDA
5.Click START
this should be fairly quick flash like a couple seconds, minutes top,.. there should be a quick green progress bar
troubleshooting:
there are times when nothing happens when you click start.. it says initializing and stuff.. don't worry! restart the process but try a different USB port... you can leave it in ODIN/DOWNLOAD mode and try different ports but you should restart the odin APP
now you need to disconnect from the computer to get into CWM recovery
to get into CWM hold +/- and power
NOTE: +/- Power also gets into download mode when you're connected to a computer
so its a universal sequence but depending if you're connected or not.
good luck
Coming from the G2x much simpler.

im guessing you ignored everything i said lol.
i guess you're gonna stick with stock since you're trying to flash superuser?
always wipe both caches when trying to install a zip.
every ROM comes rooted, so yeah. once you install CWM just flash a ROM and you're good... you can flash the stock deodexed ROM too if you want to stay stock.

You can flash a custom recovery.if the above process shows stock recovery After you flash the kernal of your choice. The previous answers cover it. I went back to stock on my S 3 for the last official ICS update, but was really a WOT. Don't have to ODIN back to stock unless you want to run on stock.
You would probably see an Odin update (which will install the firmware and and Modem when a simple ROM flash would not) pretty soon after it is OTA'd, and you could use this and not have to have the hassle of going back to stock to get it. If it is not a complete ROM, you will have to be sure you are already updated to the firmware that the OTA would be updating.

The problem with this is that when I try to reflash it waits for adb mode and stays stuck there. I think USB debugging is disabled and I have no way of going in and enabling it.

[Q] BRICKED?!?!?!

So i saw that jelly bean 4.2.1 came out so i wanted to give it a try. I flashed it and everything was gone, i reflashed back to 4.1.x. both are aokp. After that i read about the sdcard0/0 thing and i copied my cwm files from /0 to sdcard. I tried to recover it back to it was before i upgraded to 4.2.1 but something went wrong. it said error while restoring /system or something like that. I think what i did wrong was that i forgot to wipe everything before recovering. So now my S3 is stuck at the pink unicorn boot... Im unable to go to recover mode, download mode is my only option. -Plug in your phone so Odin sees it
-Grab a rooted stock ROM from the dev section
-Put the .tar file in the PDA section of Odin

And begin flashing all over again
I might add if you don't understand advanced setting it think you might mess something up... Stick to just regular flashing

You can't flash Odin files thru recovery
You really know what you're doing right? Because it kind of sounds like you don't (no offence)
Odin a stock ROM
After you do try to boot up to the Samsung e3 recovery
Wipe your phone and reboot it
Give it time... Stick roms can take up to 10minutes to completely boot up..
