[MOD] Lego dock (using pogo pins) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Sorry for the pics, it's kinda not pretty but best I could manage with what I had around:
Here's 1 pic with the phone on the dock : took picture with 3GS's phone, quality is ****ty, will try to get more later:

Others photos have been made with Gnex's with flash:
I've been using regular boards pins : used some scissors to reduce their width (did that randomly until it was fitting inside the lego bricks).
Then used a hammer to make two holes on top of a lego brick, evaluated where holes have to be only with eyes. First brick was a fail and gap between pins was too wide, 2nd try was good.
Linked the 2 wires from a wall charger to the pins (need to attach 'em more seriously (with some duct tape) as it's only wrapped around atm).
Then tested and it's charging instantly... (info on phone show that it's "usb charging")
Will probably add some floor so it'll maintains pins in position even if I move around the dock
Yay ;-)

He he, cool :-D

WIN!!

Very nice idea, and great work on it!

Nice work, if only it enabled dock mode.

You said you were going to do it. Looks great. My question is: why does using the pogo pins charge at USB rates? Not a deal breaker for me but I would have expected AC charging mode. Any ideas?

It seems you always get usb charging if u use the pogo pins, so no choice about that.
For the desk mode, well night clock (free app) can turn the phone automatically into a clock when charged and support landscape view... imho it's still pretty limited.
But I guess this lego dock can sit on the desk at my office to get some juice during day (+ that will make coworkers talk).
Anyway I'll probably get a desktop official dock whenever they are out (I'm not 100% sure if my dock is risk-free (use of board pins, use of a wall charger for pogo pins) : any input on risks will be welcome ;p

Wouldn't a NFC tag and Tasker be able to solve that?

my kid is sitting on the floor in front of me playing with his lego, i asked him to make me a stand. he said "maybe" (kids are so lazy)

My mistake. I thought it was you in another thread that said they were going to make a dock out out of Legos.
As for the pogos only charging at USB rates, that seems a little short sighted on Samsung's part. There are numerous threads on here about using navigation/LTE on USB charging and the charger can't keep up. Maybe that's why Verizon's car dock does not have pogo pins and opts for the USB connection.

I was thinking the same thing about Samsung not releasing the GSM docks. Maybe they are trying to find a way to make pogo charge at 1A...

Good idea. That probably would solve the issue.

I make a dock with knex long time ago, for my samsung galaxy spica and for my bq verne, some pics

I use an app called DeskHome by Cowbell Software. It launches the dock app or any app you want when plugged into a charger. It hasn't been updated since I used it on my Nexus One but it works great with my Galaxy Nexus.

first gen ^^.

This is pretty awesome!

Hey man!
Really good idea!
Congrats!
So, I have a Xoom´s dock. I dont know anything about pogo pins, execpt they have it.
My question: Can I use the pogo pins form Xoom to charge my GN? (I´ll change place to make it fit on GN).

As I learned from trying to do the same thing on my car dock mod.
As shared by rotus8 in the other thread:

It is on the phones hardware side and can be done with a kernel that supports it and a simple app from google play

Best car charger for ET4G?

I seem to have very slow charging times in the car. I'd like a quality car charger that has safe but fast charging times. I know some of the 2.1 A ones only work for iphones and ipads. Any recommendations? I'd prefer one that has a usb port so I can plug in a straight cable or one that comes with a straight cables. The coiled ones don't work well for my needs.
EDIT - I am very sorry - I had the wrong forum open. Moderators if you could please move this thread

The Motorola one above does NOT charge at 950ma for me. It only charges at 100-300ma which is the same as USB charging, VERY slow. This sucks because it's practically useless. When I used my EVO 4G with this charger, it was charging at the ~950ma...

through Battery Monitor Widget. Also during my 30min drive to work, it'll only charge up about about 6-8%. With the EVO 4G, it'd be more along the lines of 20-30% i think.
I'm using the one I got with my original epic. I did not know they make car chargers different. I thought they were all the same charging rate.

OP made a genuine mistake and isn't an idiot, so I won't Russian Nyan Cat this thread...
I Have two of these and a whole mess of these. When a cable goes bad from being mistreated, I grab another from the glovebox and stick it in the USB slot. If you have an older device that uses mini usb (slacker G2 for instance), you can just switch out the cable. After searching around, this one seems like it would push out more charging power, though. The Belkin one doesn't have a rating and the Kensington one pushes out 2.1 amps. I think I am going to upgrade.
It's all good. I maybe we can get this moved.
Samsung Galaxy S II
You need a charger that can put out more than 700 mA and shorts the D+ and D- lines of the USB port together.
If they aren't shorted together, the phone will go into USB charger mode, which will limit current to 450 mA if you have the same charging chip as the I9100, and 400 mA if you have the same charging chip as the I777 on AT&T.
Stock current limits on the I9100 and I777 are both 650 mA.
On the I9100, the current limits can be tweaked with some kernel mods. On the 777, they are fixed in hardware. Unknown about the Sprint variant.

The one that the other guy posted only includes the case for $34. You have to buy the mat seperately. The one I found comes with both....but I'm sure that the quality isn't as good though.
that powermate case looks fat!
This is not exactly wireless, the four tits on the bottom of the door contact the bars on pad to charge. I have the qi wireless door from Verizon and the energizer two position pad. It works great but there is supposed to be a update that will increase the distance it will charge. Thus most cases will not be a problem. The current one is about 5mm I believe and suppose to be going to 40mm. Distance between the door and charger. Goodluck
See the Galaxy sIII shine via SynergyRom
Hmmm...... I don't think the quality on that thing would be very good, $55 seems pretty steep, I'm pretty sure you can get something of better quality for cheaper or the same price.
well.. technically it's wireless...... since it doesn't require a plugging on cables.... but yeah.. it's just one of those with contacts....

Yeah it looks like the power runs through the power mat on those metal strips, and the contacts on the back case make a connection with that. Doesn't seem very safe or efficient, plus those contacts on the back of the case seem like they'd scratch the powermat strips, and if you look carefully on the bottom right of the first picture it looks like that may be the case, could also be writing or a reflection or something else too.
I think the price doesn't justify it. I'll stick to wired charging and wait for a phone that includes wireless charging out of the box.
wireless
This is not Qi(only way to go) nor Powermat (not bad, but not Qi...yet) nor is it inductive charging. It is CONDUCTIVE (Duracell) and useless...In this case, use a USB cable instead
I hate to play devil's advocate here, but by using this type of charging, the only thing you're doing is reducing the number of inserts/removals on your usb port thus having it last abit longer... but these things are also rated for 50,000+ insert/removal cycles so it's kinda hard to use these devices long enough to go over that limit.

You're completely missing the point. The main idea is to increase convenience, which this does big time. I don't care at all about the longevity of USB port.
That said, I bought a Verizon pad for $15 on eBay, and am now trying to find a stupid charging cover that isn't made in someone's kitchen. Finding the latter is the hard part.

i'm not missing the point at all. The convenience factor is implied with that. There is no other real reason for you to get wireless charging.
What i'm saying is that it's an added "benefit" for this specific charger.
Also, send a PM to kms108. he's selling the receiver pad for the Qi chargers.
I'm buying the Nokia chargers as soon as I can find one hopefully this weekend seeing that the Nokia lumia 920 is released on Friday. I have the Qi receiver and it works great on the LG (Verizon Pad) just want something more appealing. They also say that the charger is more forgiving on where you place the phone do to new technology from Texas instruments.

Custom Design Wireless Charcing dock.

I am an indusrial designer. I want to design a wireless charging dock that will hold the N7 at around a 60 degree angle so that while it charges you can have a daydream set up.
I want to design it in Solidworks, but I will need some help on the manufacuring end. If any of you know anyone that can give me a hookup on the manufacturing side, we could do a small run of these, and if it works out on the forums, put it up on amazon. Dive you want it at 60*, add a third leg to make it a tripod. Think of the rear leg from the Microsoft surface. Maybe keep the same two spoke design for it and pivot it off of the center point.
Have the 3 legs collapse on each other (by spinning) and I'll buy one
Would be good if you were able to detach the charging cable from the actual wireless charger. This way its nice and clean look for when you just want to use it as a stand.
Maybe have the third leg come off the center of the wireless charger and have a microusb port at the foot of the 3rd leg where you would plug in the charger cord.

This should be easy to acomodate. I am planning to have small base legs come off the 2 ends and toward the rear, this way you minimize amount of plastic, and still have an adjustable angle and leave the Qi clean at the top. Run the power cable down one of the side to an end and have the power plug plug in there so that cable runs up the base leg.
I want this, as I have been considering the like since replacing my old Nexus 7 with OEM dock for the new one. I used the old N7 on my nightstand as an alarm clock/clock radio, and to stream content to my bedroom a/v system. I used it for the same purposes while traveling as well.
It needs to be stable, like the old dock, and not too deep as there are numerous other items on a nightstand (water, kleenex, phone, etc.).
Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
Let me know if you need any help with this. I have an engineering background/degree and am well versed in solidworks also.

Unfortunately I am much more mechanical than electrical. I definitely dabble with my electronics though and have done some other electrical projects with another tablet in the past. For starters, learning the qi spec would be a good start. This seemed like a really good read.

I saw somewhere (can't remember where) and Qi charger designed to be built into furniture (like a desktop). Just use a hole saw to make the right side hole for it to pop into, so that would get all the electronics out of the way in one chunk.
It would be good to start piecing together the charging circuit.

Is there no Qi wireless charging stand that I can put the new Nexus 7 on? Do we really have to design our own? That's ridiculous.

[How To] Moto G Wireless Charging Internal Mod by jamlvs

If you are not rooted you will need to have the screen locked, in the beginning I was using the pattern lock. Right now I have a custom ROM (CM11) with root and have installed the "Moto Floating Charge" (needs root). That way I don't need the pattern lock. You can find more information about the Moto Floating Charge here.

Based on this xda topic, I decided to do the same.Unfortunately, that thing hanging out of the phone and the cancellation of the micro usb port was not a good option for me. So I decided to try to put the adapter inside the phone.
The adapter:

First we need to remove the 14 torx screws on the back of the phone.
If you need some help, just see this disassemble video until minute 2:20, including the part of disconnecting the battery!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd3AZSXhOf8
First I looked in to the micro usb adapter to see what contact's was using, in this case (I don't know if they are all the same) it was the 2 in the edges.
I opened the adapter (It's just some sticky paper) and found out the main 2 spot's (+5v and ground) and a third spot that says 5v +1. Have not used it but it's there.
Green - 5v +1 (not used)
Blue - Ground
Red - 5V
I then connected the adapter to the phone and made a continuity test with the*multimeter and found the 5v spot and a lot of ground spots has normal.
The installation:
First I removed the connector and installed 2 wires.
Then put it in the right place using a double sided sticker (included).
Then solder the 5V:
Then the ground and it's all done:
Now just install the back cover, and put the screws back on. You wont*even notice it's there.
If you need some help, just ask.
Here it is in action:

That will do. The "problem" with that model is being all in plastic so it is slippery. Mine is the "Qi K8" model and the center is a kind of "rubbered" material. Just confirm the output, mine is 5V 700 - 1000 mA.
Sweet!
That's awesome! Good work! I just might have to do this. Anyway, I have a question. Do you think it would cause a problem if you had the USB cable plugged in AND it sitting on the charger? Not that I'm ever going to do that, but just curious.

Having had a wireless charging phone for the past 4 years, I feel that moving to a phone without one will be a bit of a pain. Since the HTC 10 doesn't have wireless charging, I'm looking for a dock to put bedside that will -hopefully- allow me to easily pop it on for charge overnight, etc.
Has anyone come across anything good? Bonus points if it also supports QC3.0
look to lg g5 dock it is very ?

Using an QC 2 dock from iProtect with my M9. They are simple but solid and working as expected. They already launched a USB C dock with QC 3 as well. Will give it a try as soon as I received my 10. Hope it helps.

That iProtect dock looks nice.
But I'm personally going to wait for the docks that are made for the HTC 10, you know a hole on the bottom for the woofer speaker and so on
Neither have I ever liked these universal docks, just seems so flimsy and I aim to keep the USB port on my phones undamaged as long as I possibly can.
An example of a phone+dock combination I absolutely loved, which would be the original Note with Samsung's own Desktop Dock.

It's just so nice to have accessories that fit your device like a glove. I could easily place that phone on the dock without even looking and with one hand. And take it off with just one hand, of course I had to use my third finger to slightly push against the dock while grabbing the phone with my thumb/index/middle finger but other than that it was just so nice.
Same applies to the official car dock I used with my Note back then.. Oh them memories.
Haven't had that kind of experience with my One M7 which is sad since otherwise I've just loved this phone.
Shame that the official accessories have pretty much died and replaced with universal junk.
I mean like with my One M7, I tried three different docks made by a third party "for the M7" (run of the mill chinese designs which are slightly tweaked and regurgitated for each new phone) which were basically what was available at the time
1) USB port isn't aligned properly
2) doesn't fit the phone properly, rocks side to side and front to back
3) this one was just bearable but decided to break after a week or two of use, the internal USB failed so it wouldn't charge anymore.
Fun! So I gave up, whatever. Don't want to waste any more money on crap products.. At times like these I wish I'd have a 3D printer so I could design my own...
How safe is this iProtect dock with all these USB-C Charging shenanigans? Any chance of frying the device?
edit : excuse double post

As far as I can tell it is save as it utilizes an IQ technology as well.

Lisa from Mobiletechreview mentioned the Microsoft Lumia dock works with the HTC 10, meaning the HTC 10 can charge while screen mirroring, connecting to peripherals such as hard drives, etc. This is pretty awesome and has pushed me toward jumping to get the HTC 10. HTC 10 might be the closest android fans get to a desktop replacement phone. If only it could run full Chrome, it could be a chromebook/desktop replacement.

I would probably be worthwhile to check out some of Benson Leung's reviews.

Some of those docks to not meet the spec, so be careful.
Do they support fast charging for HTC 10?

Anyone have any updates?

Check out also the lambda dock. To be on the save side, you simply use the cable supplied with the phone.

Slow charge or regular charge? I guess it's meant to do it overnight. Maybe it can be modded to fit our quick charge cables

with a 3.0 charger plug charges fast so my mistake.
How about scaling on those mirrored screens? I have tried MHL cable with my fullhd Sony Z2 with a fullhd monitor and it just mirrors the screen. It is not smart enought to get things smaller on a larger screen ie. the icons are huge on monitor, remote desktop is too small on mobile screen and so is on the monitor, it should instead be scaled properly. Does anyone know will usb 3.0/3.1 connection will be smarter or that is the problem with android? Look at this for example http://www.winbeta.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/HP-Elite-x3-Dock.jpg I am not MS fan or I want to buy MS phone but this scales as it should.
