Best car charger for ET4G? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I seem to have very slow charging times in the car. I'd like a quality car charger that has safe but fast charging times. I know some of the 2.1 A ones only work for iphones and ipads. Any recommendations? I'd prefer one that has a usb port so I can plug in a straight cable or one that comes with a straight cables. The coiled ones don't work well for my needs.
EDIT - I am very sorry - I had the wrong forum open. Moderators if you could please move this thread

I like this one, charges at 950ma which is good for a car charger. Its coiled but charges fast.

The Motorola one above does NOT charge at 950ma for me. It only charges at 100-300ma which is the same as USB charging, VERY slow. This sucks because it's practically useless. When I used my EVO 4G with this charger, it was charging at the ~950ma...

through Battery Monitor Widget. Also during my 30min drive to work, it'll only charge up about about 6-8%. With the EVO 4G, it'd be more along the lines of 20-30% i think.

I'm using the one I got with my original epic. I did not know they make car chargers different. I thought they were all the same charging rate.

OP made a genuine mistake and isn't an idiot, so I won't Russian Nyan Cat this thread...

I Have two of these and a whole mess of these. When a cable goes bad from being mistreated, I grab another from the glovebox and stick it in the USB slot. If you have an older device that uses mini usb (slacker G2 for instance), you can just switch out the cable. After searching around, this one seems like it would push out more charging power, though. The Belkin one doesn't have a rating and the Kensington one pushes out 2.1 amps. I think I am going to upgrade.

It's all good. I maybe we can get this moved.
Samsung Galaxy S II

You need a charger that can put out more than 700 mA and shorts the D+ and D- lines of the USB port together.
If they aren't shorted together, the phone will go into USB charger mode, which will limit current to 450 mA if you have the same charging chip as the I9100, and 400 mA if you have the same charging chip as the I777 on AT&T.
Stock current limits on the I9100 and I777 are both 650 mA.
On the I9100, the current limits can be tweaked with some kernel mods. On the 777, they are fixed in hardware. Unknown about the Sprint variant.

I'd bet the Captivate will only see it as USB port and never draw more than 500mA from it. You can check which mode your phone is charging in the settings.

I got a $3 AC car charger ("For blackberry" but thy're both just microusb) off dealextreme. The connector is a little tight but it works great and charges fast
I've found that my Zune HD FM Transmitter charges well too. Has a USB port on it. Not a cheap alternative, but it's multi-functional and it works. Think the Captivate recognizes anything to charge as long as it gives power...
I'm sure it will charge, but at only 500mA, will be pretty slow (especially if you're using while charging).
I use an old crackberry charger (has usb port on it). 500mA output. Charges phone fine. Just not as fast as the samsung 700ma charger.

I haven't tried the car charger, but the AC outlet->USB works great
I purchased the $1.16 car charger from Monoprice.com, and it works great. Unfortunately, board rules don't allow me to post a link. Just search for "car charger" on Monoprice, and it's the first one that comes up. Or, search for the product ID: 3523.
The only problem is that, while the label lists a maximum output of 1A, the Captivate only draws 500 mA from it (USB mode), as is the case with the other chargers listed in this thread. I have not found the lower charging current to be a problem.
For $1.16... It's a steal.
I also purchased two micro USB cables from the same site, the ones with ferrites, but I had to mod the plastic heads with a Dremel to get them to fit the angled port opening. They fit and work perfectly now, though.
Even with the stock 700ma wall charger, it takes almost 4 hours to completely charge the battery. A 500ma charger (most iPhone ones and generic USB ones) will take even longer. This of course assumes you're not using the phone for anything. If you're using the phone for navigation, for example, your 500ma charger will not have enough juice for the phone and the battery level will continue to drop. So, it is important to have the car charger that can supply more than 500ma to the phone.
Currently, I know the Zune HD premium car charger can be recognizd as AC charger and seems supply more than 700ma of juice. And I read some Moto mini-USB car charger (no USB port on the charger) can be used as rapid charger as well.
I've tried two different cheap USB port car charger, one labeled 2.1a and the other is 700ma. Both are designed for iPhone/iPod and hence can only be recognized as USB charger.
If anyone found any small USB port car charger that can be recognized by the phone as AC charger, please post here.
I've heard good things about the Scosche Revive charger. I saw it in a car charger thread on the Android Forums. A guy bought it for his Evo and said it charged nicely with everything running (GPS, 4G, Navigation, et cetera). Here's a link to his post reviewing it. There's also the Revive II which has a 2.1A port and a 1A port.

Thanks for the link. The big question is: Can Captivate regconize it as rapid charger instead of USB? Just because it works with Evo (HTC phone) doesn't mean it will work the same for Captivate. And I suspect the Revive II won't work well for Captivate at all because it is designed for iPhone/iPad.

I can't say how it'll work with the Captivate, but they were having the same problem with their phones (700mA chargers only outputting 500mA). So, I'd have to say there is a good chance it would work. I'd test it out myself, but I really don't need a car charger. My work commute is 10 minutes round trip, school is 20 minutes.

As far as I know (and please correct me if I'm wrong) you can use any Android charger with micro USB. In fact, I used my OG Droid car charger on the way home and have it plugged into the Droid wall charger as I type this. It's working just fine.
So if you have a charger from an old Android phone, try it out.
p.s.
I would refrain from using that euro charger. You might fry your battery. Happened to a friend of mine from Australia earlier this year when he first moved here and didn't have a US phone.

I actually don't. I sold/returned all my old phones along with their adapters. I bought a $25 charger but its not "compatible" with my phone so, instead of charging at its usual 1amp, it only does 5mAh

Best Charger For GNex (or any USB device)

I've been hunting for an extra, high quality, 2A USB charger for my devices - but I didn't want to pay $25-$30 to get a Samsung or Asus 2A USB charger. And then I came across this blog entry by Ken Shirriff where he went and reviewed 12 different USB chargers including genuine and fake apple chargers + other brands.
http://goo.gl/rym3M
Really good and informative post. Definitely recommend a read. For the Cole's notes version, apple makes great USB chargers ... but not the best. The best USB charger in this review actually turned out to be the USB charger that came with the ill-fated HP TouchPad. This charger has very low noise and voltage drop characteristics.
What's more, you can actually get these great HP chargers for $15 on eBay. Or via Kijiji for $15 if you're in the Toronto area.
Mine is off Kijiji and here are logged screenshots of my GNex charging from 12% to 100% with both the Samsung charger that came with it and the HP Charger.

FYI, I use this charger for both my GNex and my N7. I've posted OEM vs HP Charger graphs from my N7 here.
I see nothing in those graphs that makes me think one is better than the other. The lines are virtually identical, they go from 12%-100% in the same amount of time.

It doesn't buzz like the stock one and it doesn't get hot when charging the GNex at ~1A like the stock one does. As well, this charger is capable of handling tablet charging as well. Guess I should have indicated all this in my first post.

The post is rating the chargers on far more than just how quickly it charges a phone.
Just to add my two cents, anecdotally, before even seeing this post, I was going to say that the touchpad chargers have been the best I've used also. Glad i bought 4 or 5 of them for $5/each when hp went on their firesale binge.
I read that same article and bough two of them months ago for $6. They are great. They do have a slight buzz if you put your ear up to them but nothing like the samsung one. Highly recommend them.
Interesting article. Not really sure what to make of it though, beyond not buying counterfeit chargers?
I've actually got a bunch of those HP chargers for my Gnex. I got them straight from HP for $4 each last summer. Very awesome chargers.

Well... the battery charges at the same speed for both the stock 1A charger and the HP 2A charger. The device itself regulates how much power it will draw, and drawing 1A from a 2A charger is surely more efficient and will result in a longer lasting and better charger, as well as one that can be used for tablets and other USB devices that want to draw more than 1A. I wonder if you can take the 2A charger and put a USB Splitter or something on there and charge 2 1A devices at the same time... I'd imagine so.
I use my OEM Galaxy S4 charger. It charges all of my devices faster than any other charger I've ever tried.

Car charger that's recognised as an AC charger

Has anybody already found a charger for in the car, which is recognised by the phone as an AC charger? (besides from the official HTC car dock/charger)
Because the charger I'm using is recognised as an USB charger, and therefore doesn't charge faster then 500mA.

having it recognize that it is AC vs USB is one problem... but even if it says it is charging via AC, it doesn't always pull more than 500ma (even if it is a 2.1a charger, etc). i've been testing chargers and inverters w/ac adapters all week. i've got one more to test before i narrow down the issue (hopefully).
this was just delivered: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009TBF7IG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
tested it using my normal method-- watching Battery Monitor Widget for about 20 minutes, while running Ingress. the app reported battery draw fluxuated between -56 and +300. i've been using Ingress as my test app because it tends to really hammer my battery. this new charger doesn't seem to be as consistent as the 5Vdc/2A wall charger i use with an inverter, but i'm going to keep trying it to see how it works in 'real world' cases over about an hour or two. i'll let you know, but this charger is potentially an answer to this car charger issue.

Yes, it is recognized as AC-- but so are most of the car adapters I've tried (mostly, those just have the 2 middle pins on the USB port shorted), but they have a lower wattage output, typically at like 6-8W. I bought this one specifically because it says it can output 5Vdc/2A, or 10W, per USB port. I suspect it will dip below 10W when both ports try to output at max capacity, but I'll be able to test that this weekend (and aside from testing, there's virtually no time where I'd have a need of that).
I performed a second test, about 30 minutes of talking on my phone via a bluetooth headset, Ingress open and running, push emails for GMail and Exchange, full brightness and volume, etc, and it only dropped down to discharging a handful of times. This is definitely much closer to the results I've gotten when testing a 5Vdc/2A output DC adapter.
You might be able to find other 5Vdc/2A adapters on Amazon UK, and ruling out the 'piece of junk' factor, hopefully some of them will work. I'd think that for the duds, you can at least return them for a refund by stating they don't output the proper wattage as stated on their product pages.

No to anything with the name Samsung. The LG Optimus G Pro E980 charger plug I have is 5v 1.8amp. Get any correct USB cable and make sure the plug is at least 1.8amp, a 2amp plug will also work. I have trouble with generic car chargers that are only 1amp, they keep my phone alive but take hours to charge it and it will eventually burn up the USB cable but not harm the phone. Trial and error results.:good:

Look for a used iPad charger in your local market. It can be for the iPad 1st gen even. I've never used off-market chargers with expensive gadgets, a couple of my friends' phones were fried that way.
I have noticed, keep in mind I just got this phone so still learning it, when my battery wasn't fully charged the LED on the home button wasn't working quite right. It was working but very dim. Now that the battery is fully charged the LED is nice and bright and not dimming on me. Is this normal? A power saving feature maybe? Or could there be something wrong with the LED board underneath?
And most Ipad chargers are putting out [email protected] amps. Isn't that a bit too much?
