Updating my rooted Xperia Pro MK16A - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says I wish to update my Xperia Pro MK16A Android Version 2.3.3 However I'm not sure how to go about this since my phone is rooted. Do I need to unroot it? Is there a rooted version of my phone's rom that I can just install? Or if I decide to go for a custom ROM, which one is good and works with most Android apps?
A bit of a newb here and will need a lot of help. Thanks for reading.

No, you should be perfectly fine updating with SE tools.
Unlocked bootloader must be reset, but just a rooted rom is no problem.
I run CM7 from FreeXperia and it's a joy, but there is no absolute answer to your question. Just try them and keep the one you like the most.
Just remember to back-up your data
And also remember to wipe caches
Good luck!

So if I update with the official updater my phone will still be rooted??
EDIT: Also if I decide to go for a custom ROM how do I even install it??

are these all correct? r800i newbie

I have a r800i, android version 2.3.2 rooted with gingerbreak and has a working recovery installed via xperia cwm apk..
now I want to install some themes, and most themes requires android version 2.3.4 with build number 4.0.A.xx higher..
I only have 2.3.2 build 3.0.A.2.184...
so I want to update my phone now, I dont want OTA, bad signal here, I also cant install pc companion, I says its not compatible with my PC( tried several times still not working)
what I succeeded installing is the flashtool(updated)
Just want to confirm.. Im planning to flash 2.3.4 R800i 4.0.2.A.0.58.........
Im also planning to root it again using the flashtool, are all ok? TIA
Yep, looks like you've got it down pat
thank you very much... hope nothing wrong occur...

Root Xperia S (6.1.A.2.55)

Hello,
I'm one of those lucky guys who got the 2.55 build number.
Wandered around the forum for some time, seeking for a way to root my phone, but don't want to risk before being 99% sure that this may work.
As I understood, Bin4ry's method won't work with my phone, which results in need of unlocking the bootloader.
I checked its status and it shows that its Unlockable = Yes.
Now, let's say I unlock the bootloader, what should I do next? Flash a prerooted ROM?
All I could've found on forums was "UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER" and "BIN4RY'S METHOD" stuff. Maybe because people were posting about this 2.55 thing alot. Maybe not.
All I need is a n00b friendly tutorial.
Btw, I'm on 4.0.4 ICS, which is pretty obvious.
Thank you, in advance.

Unlock your bootloader and just flash an auto rooting kernel.
But if you're unlocking the bootloader you may as well flash a Jellybean rom anyway

Hi, I hope the OP doesn't mind, but I'm kinda in the same situation and I need some help from you guys, because I am currently a Samsung owner (please don't throw rocks ) and I don't really know much about flashing ROM's on Sony.
So... I have with me my brother-in-law's Xperia S with 6.1.A.0.453 (ICS 4.0.4), never been tampered with, just bought, updated to ICS and rooted with Bin4ry's method.
All great, but I was hoping to flash 6.1.A.2.55, because I heard it is the latest.
But now the hard part comes, the phone has Locked Bootloader and I can't unlock it because "Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status > Bootloader unlock allowed" says NO.
That being said, if I flash the .55, how do I root it?
I updated and rooted an Xperia U a while back, using a method of changing the kernels, something like this:
Flashing the ROM I want (the one that can't be rooted)
Flashing an older kernel from a stock Rom witch was rootable
Root it
Flash the kernel of the last ROM, and root remains.
Do you guys thing that this method will work on Xperia S?
Flashing .55
Flashing an old kernel (from 6.1.A.2.45 or other that can be rooted)
Root it
Flashing the kernel of .55 again, and hoping that the Root remains.
Also, where could I find those kernels?

[Q] Xperia Ion JB Rooting (Spectre Method)

Now that JB for ion has been released, i found two root methods.
One for unlocked booloaders and the other for....i dont know, which is what i am here to ask
the other one is by spectre:
LT28h-6.2.B.0.211-Stock-Rooted-Deodexed.zip
If we have an Rooted ICS with CWM installed on an Xperia ION with LOCKED bootloader,
can we also simply flash this via CWM
if yes then do we have to wipe anything?
If no then...alright xD
Yes you need to wipe for Spectra's pre root JB. Us locked loader guys have to use this method until someone comes up with a root. The only thing we still need is a working cwm but that should happen soon.

don't you also have to flash the jellybean kernel too otherwise you get bootloop?
Correct after you flash the rom shut the phone off and flash the kernal. If you guys would just read a little bit all of the answers are in the last few pages of the thread.

Xperia Play dont want to be rooted

so... this is my second problem today, the first one was with the FTS, but no its woking~
The problem is the Root. Yeah, the root...
I have tried to root my device using this and others FTS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43935357&postcount=2
but dont know why, if i use, for example R800i_4.0.2.A.0.69_World.ftf or R800i_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf, my device dont accept the root...
BUT, if i use :R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World and other lower version, he accept... anyone know what to do? i'm trying to use DoomLords root, tried every version... help, again!
EDIT: now that i have tihnk for a time... the stock rom that came with the xperia play, acepted the root, so, its 2.3.2? the only problem is that i dont remember some stuffs in the 2.3.2, so i thin it is only 2.3.3 that came with the xperia play whe i buy it...
Already solved the problem.
You can only root devices from 2.3.2 down...
The strange is that I tthink may xperia play came with 2.3.4 and I rooted it before it bricks in boot loop...

you can root 2.3.4 until version 58 (enhanced v3) with locked bootloader. just flash the ftf, boot, enable usb-debugging and mass storage device (instead of mtp at usb-connection) and root it via flashtool.
otherwise unlock your bootloader and install a superuser application in any rom you want. flash the latest firmware (.79), flash custom kernel, install supersu or superuser via cwm and you got the newest firmware rooted.

How to keep root and fresh install .757?

Hi there, i managed to root my device a few days ago by downgrading, rooting and upgrading to .757 again.
Is it possible to delete apps, settings etc etc and fresh install .757 but keep Dual Recovery and root available without going through several downgrades and upgrades again? I have a locked bootloader and a backup of TA but would prefer to keep it locked if possible.
Ive been messing with root apps and installed something thats burning through my battery at double the usual rate and want to go back to a fresh copy of .757 rooted.
Also whats the easiest way to make whole backup of device once fresh installed again so can restore quickly to rooted .757?
Thanks for look.
Use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688933
But dont uncheck wipe data on flashtool process for a fresh .757 install
p.s Personally i use titanium backup pal

If u have backup of TA then the easiest way will be unlock BL, flash 757 firmware, flash doomlord kernel with cwm recovery, root using cwm, flash dual recovery using cwm, flash stock kernel using flashtool and then restore TA.. It would be the easiest way and all the drm keys will be intact....

Sweet thanks guys, i used the tutorial posted and had it done in 5 minutes. I will be unlocking bootloader eventually but have not found a need to yet, is it really required for anything except custom kernels and cd drive emulation?
Ive also seen a few custom roms listed with stock kernel, modded with things like CM privacy guard and other tweaks and such. Can these roms be run on a locked bootloader if using stock kernel and will these roms still have the Sony DRM required features enabled if run on a locked bootloader?
Thanks again!
U will get the requirements about locked and unlocked bootloader in each rom thread
