[Q] unlock bootloader backup plan confirmation

I would like to unlock the bootloader in order to flash doomlords kernel for overclocking.
My device is rooted (gingerbreak) and updated via OTA to 2.3.4.
I read that unlocking the bootloader via official SE way will wipe all data, so i need some confirmation regarding my backup-plan.
This is how I plan to do it:
1. backup all my apps and data (sms,call-log etc.) with titanium backup (i really need my savegames and stuff..)
2. unlock bootloader as described here http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/
3. flash doomlord kernel for stock firmware as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176502
4. install titanium backup and recover all backups (reboot)
5. fry device via overclocking
So here comes my question. Could this plan work? i really really dont want to reinstall all my apps.

Hi all !
I've rooted my Play and looking forward to O/C it (mainly for N64 emulation ).
Reading several threads, I gathered that I need to unlock my bootloader and flash a custom kernel (DoomLord's for example).
My Play is not simlocked, so I can use the official unlocking for my bootloader.
If I understand well, I'll then lose some DRM-credentials... But I could not find exactly what that would mean. I guess there would be no problem with apps bought from the android market. But would I lose the games pre-installed on the play? Or the free games I got from EA (Dead Space, etc.) ??
Another n00b question: when flashing a custom kernel (keeping the stock rom), vill I lose everything on my phone and therefore, do I have to backup/restore everything? And if so, what would you recommand in order to have a full backup?

Drm is your your certificate for official updates and if you lose your drm official updates would brick your phone now, if you can't do a official update you can always flash using flash tool. You won't lose any of your games or the xperia store. There is a touch point method so you won't lose your drm. You won't lose any data from your rom when flashing a kernel. When do flash a kernel then you can do a full back up through cwm.

Unlocking the bootloader + flashing a custom kernel: must I backup everything before and restore afterwards, or do these operations keep everything intact (apps, datas, etc.) ??

Yes that's the method and no you don't need to back your data up or anything when flashing a kernel. You only need to back your data up when installing custom roms.

I really hope there will be a one-click root for 4.4.
It's weird all phones from the competition are easily rootable but someone 4.3 on Sony is so complex.

They've closed alot of the bugs that were being used for the previous root methods.
IF you don't care about your data, what you CAN do is to revert to an older FTF, root, backup your TA partition, then go from there... it's a pain... but it works.

Seems much easier (no bootloader unlocking necessary) so I'm trying to figure out why you'd have to do everything listed in the other thread. Any insight?

if u want your phone to be stuck in bootloop, go ahead with that method, else you follow the method which i posted. it's a long procedure, but it works!

I don't understand why someone would post bad directions like that. Also they are very similar to Doomlord's own instructions for rooting. He says to flash an old exploitable kernel and then run his exploit and then flash back.
Anyways, your method says to downgrade to .67 firmware, and I can't find that anywhere. Can I downgrade to .423 firmware and use Doomlord's root method instead? Should be the same results, right?
Also, is step 8 necessary? Do I have to flash back stock recovery or can I keep CWM?
And finally, using this method, how will we keep root when 4.4 finally arrives?

I also wouldn't take the risk to flash the Kernel of .423 over the .67 firmware.
Yes they are both Android JB 4.2. But you never know.
About 4.4, we will have to wait what will be the available methods.

yeah. that kernel method worked for previous firmware. now it won't work. and yeah you can downgrade to any rootable firmware. u are doing this just to backup TA so that you can lock BL. you can keep that advanced kernel. but you wont get OTA updates, better to flash stock kernel and lock your BL. when 4.4 arrives, if no rooting kit is available, you've to unlock BL, install advanced stock kernel which has custom recovery and install SU and flash back stock kernel and lock your BL

After you've rooted, but before you actually unlock your bootloader... if you install the dual boot recovery, you can make a backup of your TA partition information via TWRP as well as by using the other method... (do both to ensure you can revert)...
And then after you unlock your boot loader save ANOTHER TA backup... name them so you know which is which so you can re-lock your TA if you choose if you're running a stock kernel/rom and want the DRM keys back... but that way you don't have to go through the pain for unlocking each time...

Well I ended up not even needing to unlock the bootloader for my goal, which was simply stock + root on .101.

Only had one small issue with the flashed zip/stripped FTF messing up the XZDualRecovery settings, but deleting xzdr.prop and rebooting fixed it.

When i was searching for, i really thought i was being crazy.
so many devices with a single click to root
I cant wait to start theming my ZL, Some mockups cooking here to new skins, but can't test without that root.

if u go with method, u have to download those stripped files every time when new firmware arrives. which is kinda boring to download those huge files. whereas in that unlocking BL method, u download only kernels with recovery which is just 15 to 20MB

[Q] Z1 Compact 757 straight to root?

Hi there, ive been searching for guides for last few days for locked bootloader root on Z1 Compact on .757 Kitkat and every guide seems to be different or out of date, either jumping to other out of date tutorials or needing several downgrades?
Can i just run DualRecovery installer and have root on 757 or do i need to downgrade several Android versions back to early JB and then root and reinstall newer versions using root up to 757 again?
I mostly want to backup my TA folder and then can mess with phone properly but it seems a long winded process of downgrading and upgrading several GB of Android versions just to get root? How does root even survive if upgrading again?
So what is the easiest way to root on .757 so can backup TA then unlock bootloader? Do i need to downgrade to early JB to rooot or is there a current tool for 757?
Ive been messing with my Nexus 7 2013 since launch so not a complete noob when it comes to rooting and unlocking bootloaders, just the route to root for backing up TA isnt so clear for this Z1Compact on 757.

The reason for downgrading is purley so you can root the phone without unlocking your bootloader so that you can backup your ta and drm keys.
When that's done you are safe with the ta and drm. Then you can put whatever version in and unlock bootloader and root. Rooting on the newer versions can't be done without unlocked bootloader as far as I've understood this.
Me however just skipped the backup procedure and just unlocked and rooted. My ta and drm ain't backed up.

Once ive downgraded to root and backed up TA/DRM, can i upgrade to pre-rooted .757 without unlocking bootloader still? Or to have a locked bootloader once back to .757 to turn all the drm/TA features back on?

Yes, just downgrade, install dual recovery, upgrade to pre-rooted .757 FW, then Backup TA (in tha case in future you will want unlock bootlader), done. Fully working rooted phone with DRM intact.

Yes, in Flashtool do not "Exclude" anything and Wipe Data, Cache and Appslog. The TA have nothing to do with flashing so you can flash how much you want and they be there intact, they will be wiped when you will unlock your bootloader only.
Few Tips:
To backup TA use the only app recommended from HERE , and do a Backup TA before Unlock Bootloader and one Backup TA after Unlock bootloader (after unlock bootloader there will be no more DRM keys), but if you do 2 Backup you will be able to switch between Locked and Unlocked Bootloader just by Restoring the Backups, Backup before Unlock will Lock your bootloader, Backup after Unlock will Unlock your bootloader. Do not Relock your bootloader with Custom kernels because you will brick your phone.

How can i know if my DRM keys are intact or not.. Recently I have restored my TA partition and locked the bootloader..but how can I be sure if the DRM keys are working or intact?

Type *#*#7378423#*#* and go to Service test > Security, if you have in all strings [Key OK][Active] they are all good, if you have [Unknown Error] the DRM keys are lost.
I post mine with UB.

[Q] 14.4.A.0.108 Update... Already rooted

Alright, I know there's a few similar threads but they're not exactly what I'm looking for.
My Z1C is on 14.3.A.0.757 and I've just got a notification for the 14.4.A.0.108 update. Is there any way I can maintain root whilst updating just to fix the camera issue and other bugs?
I don't want to do anything that will lose my data, such as reflashing the entire firmware and what not. I'm trying to keep on a Sony ROM for stability etc.
I'm also on a locked bootloader if that's relevant running dual recovery
Could stuff like this be done through flashable zips through recovery or any other way? I'd rather post this where it'll be seen but for some reason I don't have permission.

I wish it was that easy. The update won't install either OTA or via the companion. Through the companion it shuts the phone down then the companion fails to update. OTA it just fails and wants to redownload

You may need to unroot first to install the OTA sometimes then root it again. To be honest, if you don't want to do anything then it is strongly recommended to not up to .108 from .757 because there are dozen of guys who have many problem(like battery draining and camera go crazy) after updated without factory reset. The system settings in 4.4.2 and 4.4.4 should have many different places and will easily mess up the OS without factory reset.
Or if you real need 4.4.4 then use Titanium Backup or Helium to backup all apps and apps data first. Besure to also do a full rom backup in recovery if you have install custom recovery.

But surely if you're updating OTA or via companion, it doesn't force a factory reset so you're not losing data. Therefore it shouldn't make a difference whether you factory reset or not? Does anyone know if EasyRoot works with 4.4.4? I'll do some research after this reply on unrooting and the possibility of rooting .108
I just don't fancy losing my xposed modules, it'll be a ball ache to set it all up to my requirements again lol

OTA won't factory reset but it is dirty flashing. Like I said it, it is very easy to cause problem in 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and you have a high chance will need to do factory reset at the end.
We are all using EasyRoot to root .108

EasyRoot works with 4.4.4. Titanium Backup reliably backups and restores Xposed modules including all their settings, I did that just yesterday.

It wouldn't let me, even on standard sony firmware. I've had to backup, flash another sony .ftf, upgrade that all the way up to .108 then root and install dual recovery again. and i still lost all my data like pictures

Sorry to hear that mate, i wasn't aware flashing an .ftf wiped the sd card on the Z1C. Only had it 2 days i've just upgraded from the T and i don't recall losing pics when i flashed a .ftf onto that phone

No worries pal. The .ftf flash didn't wipe, flashtool gives you the option to wipe the data/cache etc so I did it. For some reason I thought titanium backup had grabbed all my personal data like pictures, but it didn't. I'm sure it used to back in the day... And my sony companion doesn't want to restore backups.
It was full of crap anyway, mainly meme's and stuff off 4chan. Good riddance :good:

Unchecked the clean data option in flashtool will not wipe sdcard files and so the OS settings and apps.
