Hi there, ive been searching for guides for last few days for locked bootloader root on Z1 Compact on .757 Kitkat and every guide seems to be different or out of date, either jumping to other out of date tutorials or needing several downgrades?
Can i just run DualRecovery installer and have root on 757 or do i need to downgrade several Android versions back to early JB and then root and reinstall newer versions using root up to 757 again?
I mostly want to backup my TA folder and then can mess with phone properly but it seems a long winded process of downgrading and upgrading several GB of Android versions just to get root? How does root even survive if upgrading again?
So what is the easiest way to root on .757 so can backup TA then unlock bootloader? Do i need to downgrade to early JB to rooot or is there a current tool for 757?
Ive been messing with my Nexus 7 2013 since launch so not a complete noob when it comes to rooting and unlocking bootloaders, just the route to root for backing up TA isnt so clear for this Z1Compact on 757.
Thanks for help!
The reason for downgrading is purley so you can root the phone without unlocking your bootloader so that you can backup your ta and drm keys.
When that's done you are safe with the ta and drm. Then you can put whatever version in and unlock bootloader and root. Rooting on the newer versions can't be done without unlocked bootloader as far as I've understood this.
Me however just skipped the backup procedure and just unlocked and rooted. My ta and drm ain't backed up.

Once ive downgraded to root and backed up TA/DRM, can i upgrade to pre-rooted .757 without unlocking bootloader still? Or to have a locked bootloader once back to .757 to turn all the drm/TA features back on?
Is it possible to have locked bootloader, root and proper TA/DRM features enabled while on .757 currently?

Yes, just downgrade, install dual recovery, upgrade to pre-rooted .757 FW, then Backup TA (in tha case in future you will want unlock bootlader), done. Fully working rooted phone with DRM intact.

Sweet thanks!
I take it with downgrading i just let flashtool overwrite everything, or is there things i need to skip to preserve TA?
Sorry for all the questions but the tutorials all vary slightly.

Yes, in Flashtool do not "Exclude" anything and Wipe Data, Cache and Appslog. The TA have nothing to do with flashing so you can flash how much you want and they be there intact, they will be wiped when you will unlock your bootloader only.
Few Tips:
To backup TA use the only app recommended from HERE , and do a Backup TA before Unlock Bootloader and one Backup TA after Unlock bootloader (after unlock bootloader there will be no more DRM keys), but if you do 2 Backup you will be able to switch between Locked and Unlocked Bootloader just by Restoring the Backups, Backup before Unlock will Lock your bootloader, Backup after Unlock will Unlock your bootloader. Do not Relock your bootloader with Custom kernels because you will brick your phone.

A quick search shows there is no direct root for 757 FTF, secondly the Z1 Compact forum is here. Please ask questions in the correct device forum

Type *#*#7378423#*#* and go to Service test > Security, if you have in all strings [Key OK][Active] they are all good, if you have [Unknown Error] the DRM keys are lost.
I post mine with UB.

Well the Link is broken but if you root your phone VIA Exploits, aka bin4ry root , then you will not lose your DRM keys, the only ways to lose your DRM Keys , is to Unlock your bootloader, if this method includes installing a Previous version kernel (elf file) then yes you will have to unlock youur bootloader
there is a way to back up your TA partition , but you will have to search though the development section
You only loose DRM when you unlock bootloader.
You cant loose it in any other way.

so, to root my phone with the method i posted, i have to flash my kernel back to an old version, then i must root and then i must flash back the new kernel, so i cant loose my drm keys with this method?

Well to flash any Kernel you must have a unlocked bootloader (not sure if it matters if its a FTF file kernel)
unlocking your bootloader removes your DRM keys, you can RELOCK your bootloader but you will not have your DRM keys unless you backed them up
(like said unlocking your bootloader can wipe your TA partition which contains the DRM keys)
EDIT - it says in big and blue , FOR UNLOCKED AND LOCKED BOOTLOADERS

well tell me if bravia engnine works (images look clearer , brigher, blah) , Bravia Engine depends on DRM keys, now when a device is unlocked from factory then im not sure if it has DRM keys
and even if your bootloader is locked then ROOTING VIA that method should work either way, drm keys kept too

How come your bootloader was already unlocked by factory?
It is impossible.
Are you sure you see "bootloader unlocked: yes"? Not "booloader unlock allowed: yes"?

not can you use it , DOES it work?
my XS when i bought it said Rooting status Bootloader unlocked = yes, although saying that bootloader was not unlocked
unlocking my bootloader means, that i have root rights or?
in my service menu is bootloader unlock allowed yes
so, i want the information, i want to keep my DRM Keys, so are they lost when i flash a new kernel version? because i have to flash back the kernel to root my phone and then i can flash back the new kernel, so do i keep my DRM keys or they lost now?

rooting your devices keeps your bootloader locked, also drm keys
flashing a stock kernel does not need unlock bootloader
flashing custom kernel will need unlock bootloader
Sent from my LT26i using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Stock kernels are signed by sony, and locked bootloader can boot signed kernels.
That means you can flash any stock kernel anytime with locked bl.
Unlocked bl is required to flash custom kernels, and so that custom kernel ARE not signed by sony.

Hi there, i managed to root my device a few days ago by downgrading, rooting and upgrading to .757 again.
Is it possible to delete apps, settings etc etc and fresh install .757 but keep Dual Recovery and root available without going through several downgrades and upgrades again? I have a locked bootloader and a backup of TA but would prefer to keep it locked if possible.
Ive been messing with root apps and installed something thats burning through my battery at double the usual rate and want to go back to a fresh copy of .757 rooted.
Also whats the easiest way to make whole backup of device once fresh installed again so can restore quickly to rooted .757?
Thanks for look.
Use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688933
But dont uncheck wipe data on flashtool process for a fresh .757 install
p.s Personally i use titanium backup pal

If u have backup of TA then the easiest way will be unlock BL, flash 757 firmware, flash doomlord kernel with cwm recovery, root using cwm, flash dual recovery using cwm, flash stock kernel using flashtool and then restore TA.. It would be the easiest way and all the drm keys will be intact....

Sweet thanks guys, i used the tutorial posted and had it done in 5 minutes. I will be unlocking bootloader eventually but have not found a need to yet, is it really required for anything except custom kernels and cd drive emulation?
Ive also seen a few custom roms listed with stock kernel, modded with things like CM privacy guard and other tweaks and such. Can these roms be run on a locked bootloader if using stock kernel and will these roms still have the Sony DRM required features enabled if run on a locked bootloader?
Thanks again!
U will get the requirements about locked and unlocked bootloader in each rom thread

Hello.
At the moment I am using stock lollipop .270.
How do I root it in order to backup the TA partition ?
Probably you have to flash KK v108 with Flashtool, root that and flash an already rooted+recovery 270 that are in the general section of the forum.
Or check around general forum if you can root without going back (been out of the loop with rooting procedures). Something like this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3140241
So if I use Flashtool I guess I have to onlock bootloader. Wouldn't that destroy the TA partition ? I want to backup it before I begin modifing anything.

I rooted just a few days ago while on the 270 uk firmware. Unlock bootloader first then i auto rooted with chinese Kingroot app http://androidxda.com/download-kingroot-application . After this i follwed ( http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html ) this guide to remove kingroot and install super su. After this i used ( http://nut.xperia-files.com/ ) Th locked dual recovery from here which installed the recovery to the phone. Next step is here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952609257 . Once you flash this prerooted firmware you are fully rooted. good luck i hope this isnt too confusing.
Note iff you do not unlock bootloader the kingroot app will not be able to root the phone. bootloader unlock is the first step.

For flashing a ftf via flashtool, You don't need to unlock bootloader. You could also try the link from My signature to root, it worked fine for Me on locked bootloader.

Please guide how to root E6883. Thank you very much !
well rooting is not as straight forward as you think...
1) downgrade to LP .200 or lower if you are on MM already.
2) use iovyroot - (temp) root tool from @ zxz0O0 to backup your TA partition in order to preserve your DRM keys!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597
3) after successfully backing up your TA, you can unlock your boatloader and root your device!
then you can use this method to restore those SONY features that you lost by unlocking bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/sony-credentials-restore-unlocking-t3296383
There is no permanent root for locked bootloader devices yet...

With unlock boot loader and there is method to save to DRM keys. Whenever you want to relock, relock your boot loader with DRM keys. And even with unlock boot loader all functions are running properly.

No point...the stock kernel got dm-verity (verified boot) any changes made to it won't let you boot...and there is no way around it, the only way to root is with a custom kernel....
If you use iovyroot you can temp root on Lollipop and back up your TA, once you're on a custom rom you can also flash your drm keys (not just emulate), so you're all good...
People that can't unlock are out of luck...

You misunderstood what iovyroot does, it's a temporary root that uses an exploit found on certain versions of Lollipop (so it won't work on MM . 224 or .253) you need to downgrade to a Lollipop firmware that is listed for your device, then you can root temporally just so you can backup your TA so you won't lose your drm keys forever once you unlock your bootloader...
This here will also explain in all details why you can't root when dm-verity is in place
You will never have full root because of dm-verity without unlocking your bootloader for the reasons explained above....
You can use this tool to fully reactivate your drm keys if you backup your TA partition before unlocking....
Hope that is a bit more clear for you now

Thank you for your answer and links!
I posted the previous answer because i had read this guide that says:
"2. BACKUP YOUR DRM KEYS
There is a tool called iovyroot, with which you can backup your DRM keys from an unrooted phone, but at the time of the writing it doesn't support the latest firmware (.224). It does support a lot of older firmwares so it may be useful to not upgrade your phone before checking up this tool."
