so... this is my second problem today, the first one was with the FTS, but no its woking~
The problem is the Root. Yeah, the root...
I have tried to root my device using this and others FTS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43935357&postcount=2
but dont know why, if i use, for example R800i_4.0.2.A.0.69_World.ftf or R800i_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf, my device dont accept the root...
BUT, if i use :R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World and other lower version, he accept... anyone know what to do? i'm trying to use DoomLords root, tried every version... help, again!
EDIT: now that i have tihnk for a time... the stock rom that came with the xperia play, acepted the root, so, its 2.3.2? the only problem is that i dont remember some stuffs in the 2.3.2, so i thin it is only 2.3.3 that came with the xperia play whe i buy it...
Already solved the problem.
You can only root devices from 2.3.2 down...
The strange is that I tthink may xperia play came with 2.3.4 and I rooted it before it bricks in boot loop...

you can root 2.3.4 until version 58 (enhanced v3) with locked bootloader. just flash the ftf, boot, enable usb-debugging and mass storage device (instead of mtp at usb-connection) and root it via flashtool.
otherwise unlock your bootloader and install a superuser application in any rom you want. flash the latest firmware (.79), flash custom kernel, install supersu or superuser via cwm and you got the newest firmware rooted.

Hi, i own a Xperia Play since 3 days.
Normaly it is no problem for me to root my older devices and put cwm on it.
But the Xperia Play makes me angry...
I managed without problems to unlock the bootloader.
Than i installed .42. There i could root the phone and put cwm on it but when i installed a custom rom, the device stuck on "sony ericsson" bootlogo, so i need to install stock .42 again. (i rooted with superoneclick and flashtool) CWM was installed by the cwm app and "cwm-install" from the forum.
No methode works for me to install a custom rom.
Now i installed .62 tft on the device because with .42 didnt worked for me.
But now i couldn't install root(superoneclick or flashtool doesn't work). So i couldn't install a cwm.
Could you help me ? I read a lot of threads, but couldn't find an answere.
I read something with kernel, but kernels are normaly installed by customrom itself or manualy after installing rom, i am right=!
I hope you could help me, because i want a fast device.
Best regards bikerboy-030

.62 firmware is unrootable by normal methods, therefore you have to use a pre-rooted rom/kernel to have root and CWM
thanks for the fast answer!!!
Thx a lot, now i know, that i do not need to test it with this rom any more
Does an pre rootet stock rom exist, that i can install with flashtool?
So that i can install cwm over the new app? That would be awesome

Try DooMKernel. Pre-rooted and comes with CWM.
BTW there is only pre-rooted kernel, not rom. My mistake

can you please tell me how do you flash the kernel when the phone is not rooted?
I am in the the situation but couldn't work out how to flash new kernel.
thanks!
edit: finally figured out that I need to unlock bootloader first. strange that I didn't need to do that for my first root.

search a prerooted system.img and flash using fastboot, or read this
Since you've unlocked the bootloader first, which you didnt have to do but is a much easier process of rooting your phone if your BL is unlocked
all you need to do is download the rootxperia.zip then put it in the root of the phones SD card and then flash the zip onto your phone using CWM.
Put rootxperia.zip in sd. Hotboot a suiting kernel with cwm. When phone starts booting tap the volume down constantly untill youre in cwm. Then install update and choose the zip in sd

Hi guys, so i have my stock Xperia Play GSM and i wanna install a custom Kernel with CWM and then root the phone using CWM. Can you please tell me what is the best Kernel for games and also has the CWM built in. Do i have to do anything else to my phone before i can do this ? I unlocked my bootloader and installed Flashtool ...
Device: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play R800i GSM, Android 2.3.4 -> 4.0.2.A.0.69
Thanks !
I can't tell you which is the best, and I hope all threads starting with "best" gets locked. But generally you need 2.3.3 to root but since you already have an unlocked bootloader, you can install any custom kernel, they have CWM installed so you can boot into recovery by pressing the Volume down button at Sony logo. From there you can install a custom rom that is already rooted. You need the rom and kernel to be compatible with each other in order for the phone to boot.
If you want to just root the phone you need to down grade to 2.3.3 and use the root feature in flashtool. If you want to manually install clock work mod, after rooting, use the CWM installer version 5 from this link, the option to reboot into CWM in the program will not work BTW, you'll have to do it manually. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840

The flashing process can take time, wait up to 10minutes. Sometimes it can get stuck due to bad cable or other variables. Try plugin it in a different port, preferably USB 2.0 port, and with no other USB devices connected to your computer, keep trying and it will work eventually. Try a different cable as well.
Flashtool have to work with locked bootloader, which is needed if you want to restore a locked phone to stock. You don't have to check anything unless you want to specifically exclude it from being flashes. You should flash this firmware, its 2.3.4 but it has been modified to be rootable: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591398
I thought you said you unlocked your bootloader though.
I have just updated my Sony Xperia S from 6.1.A.0.2.45 to 6.1.A.0.2.55 via PC companion, after the update I wanted to root my phone again too allow some apps to have root access. As I went to check to see if my phone was rooted I noticed that it wasn't for my apps weren't allowed super user. I then attemted to root via Bin4ry like I did previously in version .45. It didn't work.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if it has been resolved without having to unlock the bootloader / install a custom kernel, I don't want to do either of those, I just want root. Has anyone been able to root on .55 on Stock sony ICS firmware .55?

Simple, downgrade to .40 , root it, install CWM, download prerooted .55 system, flash via CWM , connect to flashtool, flash stock .55 ftf only kernel and baseband ...

its looks hard, but its simple, Flash--root-cwm-flash via cwm- flash kernel and baseband... about 20mins...
the problem with flashing pre rooted system, is the change in region, ive unlocked then flash recovery nozomi then flash supersu, flash stock kernel.sin, flash cwm, then relocked and deodexed my firmware, and now im reinstalling all mods on my previous rom..hahahaha..cause dont want to change region .
So you think its better unlock BL ?

TrackID works after unlocking and relocking bootloader? I thougt it stops working because of loosing DRM-KEYS while unlocking a bootloader.

Download music info works again if you relock you BL, but TrackID (I think) and FB music likes via Walkman will not work anymore, so it's your decision if you want to lose that functions.

Hi I am a noob and have tried 2 different ways of rooting, I am sick of being low on internal storage and need to make a partition on my sd card which requires my phone to be rooted! All of this is just stupid to me, it's a gaming phone WTF were they thinking with low internal memory?!?!
I just need the easiest way to root the my Xperia Play without any BS.
P.S. I have searched the board and all of it is outdated BS or BS that doesn't work.
You have to be on 2.3.3 firmware in order to root. Or flash a custom kernel with root preinstalled. Those are your only 2 options.

Ah I went to 2.3.4 for the Screenshot Feature, so would have to revert just to root and then have to stay at 2.3.3? The second option sounds simple enough and best.
And you have to be rooted to partition? Ah..was looking to get 64GB so if I have to be rooted.ahh, looks like its inevitable.

All information can be found in the "About Us" in your phone menu
State your model, android version and your firmware like below:
Model: 800i
Android: 2.3.4
Firmware: 4.0.2.A.0.42
Model - R800x
Version - 2.3.4
Firmware - 4.0.2.E.0.57
Any help is appreciated! Maybe I should try the Zergrush way? I really don't wanna brick my phone and I have had 2 fails already :crying:
Edit: Oops I guess I need to download drivers from Flashtool before being able to root... (I think lol) Doing that now..
You can't root 2.3.4 you have to downgrade first to 2.3.3 to root then if your bootloader isn't unlocked you can up update it. But other than that there is no way to root 2.3.4.
Is there a way to make a partition on the SD Card for internal memory by unlocking bootloader or by any other means? I basically just want more internal memory. If I can do that without rooting great!

Yeah you can, I've done it. It has to be early 2.3.4, though. The 0.57 version that the OP has won't do it, but the 0.42 version I have worked. Didn't work the first time, and I couldn't get DoomLord's script to do it, but I got it using the 'Force zergrush' option in FlashTool. To get the 0.42 version that worked, I installed the R800a 2.3.3 firmware and let it OTA update to the 0.42 version of 2.3.4, then used the zergrush method.
But that is for GSM not for CDMA. 2.3.4. It can not be rooted while on it unless your boatloader is unlocked.
WOW I just took a couple more hours of research, and I rooted my 2.3.4 xperia play using that rooting software that I'm too lazy to link to in Chinese AND I haven't unlocked my bootloader either and it worked (which it seemed unlocking bootloader was important for a few ways to root), It would have worked in my first hour of researching rooting (first time looking up how to root ever), but I didn't download the drivers from flashtool until tonight (which took me a few minutes to research and figure out).

and you should be able to root fine using Easy rooting toolkit (v4.0) created by DooMLoRD

This works on WINDOWS, Download DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip extract it using winzip/winrar go to the folder where its extracted plug your phone in using your usb cable then execute "runme.bat" in the folder that you extracted and follow the instructions on the screen
