[SUGGESTION] Separate Marketplace into GSM/CDMA (possibly carrier) and Tablet - About xda-developers.com

Just a suggestion as there seem to be a lot more GSM phones, so it makes it hard to find CDMA phones. Even breaking it down into carrier would be very helpful. There should also be a section for tablets, both wifi and 3G. Thoughts?

GSM/CDMA/Other would be about as far as I would go with it. Breaking it down too far just makes for more clutter. Keeping it simple would be the best course of action.

OK, well gsm/cdma/tablet would seem to be the best I think but that's just me. I think tablets should have their own section.

I'd go with Other over a dedicated tablet section simply because there aren't all that many tablets that get sold. Also there are plenty of other gadgets that pop up in the market. I've sold some USB 3G/4G sticks in there as well. Also, some SD cards get resold as well.

Well this will clear up Market place and it will be well organized

I think this was brought up in the mod forums a while back, but it was dismissed for reasons that I can't recall at the moment.

Hello Everyone

Anyone in favor of creating two different marketplace mini forums? one for CDMA and one for GSM? Any super cool, nice moderator wanna take the long painstaking time to split the forum into these two categories? It may serve to erase a lot of confusion for people who just arent grasping the difference.
maybe talk to the mods for that, making a thread would probably just be locked down
just my 2 cents
Seems like a great idea. But keep in mind that only the U.S. uses cdma so there's a downside. But ask this to be moved to the aboutxda developers section as most mods usually check that forum pretty often.

Will do. Thanks.
Not a bad idea, but if someone seriously doesn't know the difference that it sad.
IMO something more useful globally would be a forum based on 3G bands i.e.

Well mostly the issue with people is that they don't know is it a CDMA or gsm devices. That's why we need a separate sub forum for that. And a specific mod too
Wow someone beat me to it,I hate looking in here and seeing 1out of 20 or so threads are cdma.I'm looking for sprint phones and have to actually search so I don't go through so many threads just to see cdma phones.I'm really excited to see a split marketplace,so I hope this can be done.

i can see that to a sense but how many cdma phones are in Europe? even if it did go that way there are still more usa gsm phones listed then cdma phones,i would still have to go through a bunch of threads just to find a sprint or verizon phone.there are other cdma companys also, boost, cricket others like those and those 2 companys are finally getting decent phones.

Actually Canada, Mexico, and parts of Asia use CDMA as well. GSM is definitely more prominent outside the US though. I'm a GSM kind of guy. I recently switched to Sprint for the pricing (coming from AT&T). I have a million and one GSM phones lying around though lol. I miss being able to swap phones on the fly.
Yeah with sprint you can change phones online easily and you can use that service to check esn's

I think it's actually damn good thing! that means more pure android experience to the mass! less skins bs.
I approve this rumor
Well if it is true then it is all but guaranteed that Sony will be one of the selected manufacturers, after all the code the have contributed to aosp and the praise they got from Google.
Sony nexus sounds nice! Nex-peria anyone???
I really hope this turns out to be true. I'm excited. It's a win win for consumers. More choices, less skins and less restriction.
Winning!
And only GSM and carrier unlocked!
Not such good news for sprint/vzw users in the u.s. but for everyone else its great!
4 of them will probably be tablets
This sounds like it could be very successful.. but Google needs to make sure that each and every one of those devices gets updated in a timely fashion. As in one Nexus doesn't get updated a month before another. Or even better, if every update was pushed to all five simultaneously. Looking forward to hearing more about this.

Agreed, the carriers in America have way too much say in what manufacturers do.
Thankfully its not like that here.

Fragmentation for kernels devs yes. ROM devs shouldn't have much trouble making their work compatible across multiple pure Android devices.

ATT blows, Tmo has dead spots. There isn't a lot of choice. Good service > open phone.
Guess I'll have to get a tablet to sate my open device needs

Google vs. Apple lawsuit (GNEX updates)

I'm on Sprint. From what I understand Google is gonna be taking off the native search capabilities from this phone. Does that mean in OTA updates the feature will be gone?

I'm sure OTA updates aren't gone.
But from what I understand, if I'm wrong correct me please.
Apple sued Google because apparently apple has rights over being able to search for certain things inside the phone. Like apps specifically I think
So I think that's probably what Google is gonna remove.

But im pretty sure the feature won't be entirely gone.
IMHO, apple is very childish.
not to mention that the only thing keeping them alive is the false 'hype' for their devices.
Trust me, ive had iphones, and Id switch an iphone any day of the week for a Nexus or GS3
But seriously, don't worry about the search thing, most likely google will either find a way around it, or you know..

Giving away gnex

Hey guys.
Recently my beloved nexus' radios decided to quit working. I've tried everything to get them back but the harsh reality is that they just don't work anymore. I made a thread in the Q&A section to no avail.
Decided to go with the GS4 so I have an unused somewhat defective, and clearly used phone that is just sitting on my desk. When I went from my incredible to the gnex, I gave my incredible to one of the awesome devs that made that phone so much better. I'm thinking of doing it again because you guys are so great.
So if you are a dev, contact me and I'll so my best to give it to someone who can truly use it. Whether it be for parts or as a test flashing device, etc.
I can ship the phone free of charge through amazon since I work there so there really is no hassle involved.
Just to be clear, the radios (as far as I can tell) don't work, the charging port is a bit loose and sometimes hard to charge, and there are a few scratches on the screen and around the bezel. Other than that everything works. So perfect for a test device for your future roms.
I really want someone to USE the device and not just turn around and sell it, although I would be none the wiser. So let me know if you NEED it.
Thank you to this community (most of you ) and to all the hard working developers that got me thru the last few years. It's been fun.

I also have an extended battery that I can give to someone as well.
And this is a Verizon model, if that matters.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Well I have one already.
Although, it's the sprint variant.
You see, I don't make that much money, and I got this for christmas, sure it's great, but since it's limited to CDMA, I cannot be flexible with it at all.
It really does suck, I've been wanting to sell it and replace it with a GSM Galaxy Nexus, but no one will buy it, everyone already moved on to wanting the galaxy S4 or something similar.
So I definitely don't NEED it, but it would save me some money with me being able to change to Straight talk.
About the broken radios, I can try and repair it, buy a new charging port, buy a new antenna, etc etc, it'd be a fun project. I've already started some development for myself for the toroplus, and the GSM Galaxy nexus would allow me to fully mess with a semi working Ubuntu Touch OS.
And, if it wasn't given to me, which it probably won't, I actually have a cheap 12 dollar otterbox like case for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, I messed up on the order and got that instead of one for my model.

Friend of mine really wants to start developing for phones. And I told him a nexus phone would be the best. But he doesn't really have the money to buy one and neither do I. So he could really use it and he did some development for his old tablet and as far as I can see he's quite good at it. So I think he would be a real good person to have here on the forums.

It would help if you already had a thread in the developers section.

Its gotta be boring for developers with the lack of att support right? Can we get a developers opinion on this? I imagine theres only so much a developer can do. It sucks I threw down 249.99 for a phone that's poorly supported by at&t..

It's hard when carriers have control over updates. Ports can only get you so far and since they're not designed for our device it's hard to get everything working 100%. I personally don't like ports and try to stick with what was released for our devices, but some ports turn out better than others. You'll see a lot more development on newer devices and a lot of aosp based development on older devices because aosp bypasses the carriers but can be finicky sometimes because of the closed source proprietary libraries that carriers use.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
As AT&T has always been the last to get updates if at all, the best way to send a message about that is to stop using AT&T. I have a work phone and tablet on AT&T that have never been updated from Gingerbread or Honeycomb respectively, yet the manufacturer has the ICS updates on their site.
At&t is pretty bad but nothing is worse than Verizon. I was with them for a long time and att is much better imo. It may be different is this case but historically Verizon gets updates last. I am going back to prepaid or tmo when my contract up though. I love all the ROMs we have for the gs3, even if they are ports they all work pretty good to me. I truly appreciate all the developer support this device still gets.

Definitely appreciate the developers for doing all that they do for us. Couldn't ask for more.
I may be leaving AT&T behind as well. I was thinking of heading to Sprint next year when the contract ends, depending on if Sprint's LTE coverage has improved. I'd really like truly unlimited data for the same/cheaper price than AT&T gives for pretty sad amounts.
