I'm not sure how it happened but I lost CWM Touch Recovery. This was included with the install of the Hitman KErnal. Is there any way to get it back without odin?
ok so when I try to go into recovery it it will show clokworkmod 5.8.1.5 but then it will just jump straight and reboot the phone???
You can try flashing it with rom manager but I don't know if it will stick.

So when you go into recovery, it goes into boot without you doing anything?
Couple things.
1. Do NOT use rom manager with the SGSII e4gTouch. The kernel is tied to the recovery and NOT stand alone. You're begging for a brick if you do this using rom manager.
2. If you read the HITMAN thread, you'll see most of the folks are having the same issue. flash gunslinger or stock kernel with older CWM and you'll be back to normal. Prob. need to use ODIN.
3. For the OP, you posted the same issue in that thread where appropriate, was it really needed to do another thread with the same thing?
The new touch recovery seems to be nothing but problems. I flashed it with hitman and didn't like it so I went back to rogue recovery.

still new at this but have you tried the E4gTautoroot and flash the el29 stock kernel+cwm and then use cwm to reflash the Hitman kernel? You can use it as an alternative to flash an older cwm recovery and then update again

1. I didn't know that.
2. I tried to flash using odin but it kept saying something about md5 hash invalid, or something like that. Was not able to flash unless I was doing it wrong.
3. I think posted this thread before I saw other people having the issue in the other thread
do this:
1)go and search for the rogue stock rooted el29 recovery and download the zip
2) unzip it and with the zimage (forget about the other file)
3)do it into a tar file(should be as easy as doing a zip with winrar or winzip)
4) go to odin and use this file in the pda area and start it
this should solve it...worked for me
here are my ¢2 cents

Hey guys. I'm having some issues installing kernels. I'm aware of how to do the process but aside from the CWM kernels and the stock kernel that's installed when you odin back to stock every other kernel I flash results in a boot loop.
Things like ROMS and zips install fine in CWM but as long as the file has a custom kernel I get boot loops.
Anyone have any idea how I can go about fixing this so I can install ROMs on my phone?
Can anyone help? Plz???
Probably because your well on your way to bricking your epic.. kernels are rom specific just cause theres many out there doesnt mean you can flash anyone over any rom..
I wouldnt really play with cwm just yet phones to new... alot people are bricking this device fasst ..I was one of them.
If u wanna play safe use stock rom with zedomaxepicv3 1.6 oc kernel flash that tar in odin after u go back to stock eg30.tar
give development some time ..let others go through trial and error.
Spare your device she will brick trust me.

Nothing that I'm doing should result in a hard brick with this phone. The issue isn't that I'm flashing different kernels with any random ROM. It's that ROMS don't install properly because of the issue my phone is having with kernels.
I've tried to install Zedomax's latest kernel immediately after going back to the stock eg30 tar before and I wasn't able to do that either. It resulted in me getting a boot loop as well (that had to then again be fixed by flashing the eg30 tar).
It's a weird issue that I don't see others having on the forum and honestly I think it's possible that it might be a small fix such as flashing a particular tar or possibly formatting some area of the phone, but I'm just not sure how to address the issue.
Heres what u do worked for me ok
Step by step
Go to stock with eg30.tar its a 435-450mb file
Use the odin version 1.85 reccomended
Enable usb debug on epic
Get into download mode
Only select pda and choose the zedomaxepic v3 1.6oc kernel it is a tar file should be in android dev section or google it.
Only selct auto reboot should already be checked in odin , do nothing else and do not use any pit file.
Then you should get a successful flash then phone boots up as galaxy s 2, gt 19100 with a yellow triangle that means it flashed
Thats exactly how i did it.

Yes samsung is known for that once ur on a kernel made for the device bit its really from a diff phone cause zedomax is a gti9100 kernel i a way u cant flash rom zips over a custom kernel
You can only use rom zips over stock kernel
The only way to flash zips is be on stock rom stock kernel first.
The best method is odin not cwm

If I do this process in the order you have it here then when I try to install Zedomax's Kernel it hangs at zimage in ODIN and I have to disconnect the USB. The kernel never flashes and it stays on the official Samsung kernel.
This stuff is frustrating
Weird weird... It shouldnt hang anywhere as long as u see yellow com port in odin and you have correct tar put into pda only dont unzip anuthing just put download into winrar choose pda and select the downloaded tar.. When done itl say pass in green
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
Make sure its the complete prerooted zedomaxepic v3 1.6 kernel no other version and it must be a .tar file not zip . In pda only let it sit sometimes it will fail keep trying but make sure ur on stock rom first..
That kernel willl give u over clocking ..root and cwm recovery all in one

try another usb port, and/or another cable...
and you can just flash the stock repack with CWM to avoid flashing zedo first

I know what to expect in ODIN during a correct flash, I've used it multiple times, but for whatever reason, that particular tar file always end in a hang at zimage.

I have the right file. And I already know how to obtain root and CWM with the few kernels my phone can flash (Which now that I think about it are mostly stock kernels with slight modifications). Overclocking isn't that important to me but overall my main problem is that when I'm in CWM I can't fully install ROMS. They install but do not flash over correctly/completely and cause boot loops. Other zips flash fine.

I've tried multiple USB cables, all result in the same thing. I've tried to flash the stock pack with CWM that you're talking about before and that works fine. i was able to root afterwards and everything but once I tried to install a ROM when I'm on that kernel. I get the same thing, boot loops.
are you sure its bootloops and not just taking a long time? because rebuilding the dalvik-cache can take a while and loop the bootanimation..

I can't imagine rebuliding the dalvik-cache should take in excess of 10 minutes or more (if it can, correct me). It just hangs at the Samsung Boot Animation that has the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark.
(I've left the phone on for about 15-20 mins before at this screen) I can only then access download mode, nothing else. No recovery and no booting.
Maybe just stay stock for now till development furthers..

I'm not experiencing the boot issues but, I found there is a lot of information out there regarding kernels and rom's. This is good stuff here. By doing this method, will it root the phone? After doing this, I would like to get rid of the yellow triangle. Mostly just annoys me. Is there an easy way to do that?
I see a method chris41g provided for doing it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297999
Is it possible to just use that stock tar and then use zedomaxepic v3 1.6oc kernel? Or is it the kernel that causes the triangle?
Sorry for so many questions. I'd like to do this once and do it right the first time. I came from the Bonsai ROM on the Epic 4g. It has been a while since I have had to do this.
Thanks for your time.

Have you tried going completely back to stock? It will remove root and cwr. Then try odin chris41g repacked stock pulled kernel with cwr (can't remember if it provides root or not) but you xan always flash the root zip.

I've had to go back to stock multiple times. Every time I've tried to flash a ROM it's run into a boot loop and the only way that I can access the phone again is to ODIN back to stock, install one of the few kernels I can that has CWM and restore a backup. The kernel you mentioned in your post is one of the few my phone will take but others like the Lost Kernel and Zedomax's OC ones will send the phone into a boot loop.
I'm running VeNuM ICE 3.1.1 with FC22 Modem and Kernel. Apparently I used stock on the kernel during my last flash and lost my recovery. What's the easiest way to get it back since I'm already rooted and the Android System Recovery <3e> doesn't give me the option to flash anything?
Odin or mobile odin.

I am a dummy and am in somewhat the same situation. I flashed aokp build 28 ics rom, right in the beginning of the thread it says 'dont flash from stock ics recovery' I had team rouge on ics rom, so I thought I was good. Now I just go to android system recovery.

From what I've heard is not to mess with a Recovery while on ICS due to their being bricks... I'd suggest using the ODIN one click to EL29, then use autoroot package with option C, to install Rogue recovery and flash to a newer ICS ROM.

What id suggest is downloading chris41gs stock el26 recovery and use mobile odin to flash it. Then upon reboot go into recovery and flash whatever u want next. Then if u want to switch roms again or update, follow the same procedure.
thanks Febby & rsalinas1, I used sfhubs one click odin to stock, then installed FC24 with cwm and I am good to go. good (cheap) learning experience for me.

No not really conflicting if you look at them slowly. Its basically get back to a GB kernel at the end of the day. They say to odin it since you do not want to or have any other way to get a GB kernel on your phone if you are on ICS. Now you could flash from ICS but that is what people are trying to avoid since it could cause a brick.
Basically: When on ICS
1. Odin a GB CWM recovery(now others have used EL29 and Rogue recoveries as well) I personally use a stock CWM recovery from CM7 and Miui
2. From there you can wipe and flash and do nandroids as normal.
Option: Safest bet
1. One Click Odin your choice of any of the GB stock roms by sfhub
I have used both methods so far with no problems. I had CM9 on my phone then used odin to go back to the recovery used with CM7 and then I nandroid back my UnNamed Rom. I did this a few times without issue. I have never heard of any issues with anyone using any of the above two methods I mentioned. If someone has please inform us

I've searched around and I don't know how to just odin a kernel, so I use sfhubs one-click back to el26 then I use autoroot to install el26 +cwm.
I would like to just odin a kernel and flash from there, but i am unsure of the procedure, do you do this:
phone to download mode and connect to odin, use PDA slot and browse to kernel, hit start or GO or whatever it is, then when it starts to reboot, pwr+vlm up to get into recovery, then get my flash on from there?
I use mobile Odin for the kernel alone but I believe in PC Odin you can just select PDA and choose the kernel. Tar and flash it that way then when it starts to reboot either catch the volume up + power on the splash screen or do like I do and snatch the battery real quick and the boot to recovery, everytime I try to hit it while its rebooting Im too slow

I havent used mobile odin, but I hear nothing but good things, so I think I am gonna grab it and try it out. That way I wont need to be at a PC to get my flash on.
With mobile odin, do I keep the kernel on my sdcard, same place I put roms and such? And when using mobile odin, if the file is *.tar.md5, do I remove the .md5 from the file name first? Do I use the flash firmware option?
I've done this at least 25 times recently; so easy, I'll post instructions here again.
1. get Mobile Odin(time saver to the max)
2. Get EL26 kernel (TAR version)
3. flash EL26 kernel in Mobile Odin (takes 10 seconds)
4. Boot into recovery(you will have the proper one now!)
5. Flash away
if you do this either coming from A GB rom to ICS, or going back to one, Guaranteed success...
Simple as can be; not sure why this keeps getting asked.....
The kernel is 8.1 mb, which exceeds the attachment size, so I can't post it here, but its all over this forum..

Yea u can keep em in a folder on internal SD that's what I do and just open the location it will find all tar files in that location then just select and follow directions, mOdin works really good its quick and no flash counter in crease or yellow triangle. Its alot easier to flash ics than having to go to the PC cuz u can just Odin el26+cwm kernel boot to recovery and get ur flash on without all the hassle of drivers and connecting a USB etc

sweet thanks, gonna grab the app and go grab the kernel as well. can't wait!!!
If I just cut my 30 min. flashing time down to 10 mins, that means I can flash 3x more, frick yeah!! Now I just need the new cna to drop so I can flash that girl.

My question was for when going back to gb from ics if I needed to Odin the whole rom, I had seen both kernel+cwm only and whole rom and just wanted to make sure if I just flashed the kernel only I'd be OK more for clarification than an actual how to for me since I know how to Odin both, just wanted to make sure I was odining the right things b4 I jumped and landed on a brick after I had seen someone say to Odin the whole rom I wanted to be sure I was doing it right since I had seen both ways mentioned. Its a little more confusing than my damn evo where I'm always on the same recovery no matter what, and a bit scary with the bricks flying around like a construction site filled with monkeys on meth

Yeah, flashing with this phone is different from the htc stuff, but once you get the hang of it, its just as easy!

Yea ur post cleared it up for me, just gets confusing when. Theres multiple methods recommended I was 99% sure I just needed to Odin the kernel only but wanted the clarification before I jumped off that bridge, not too comfortable jumping off a bridge when I'm not sure how deep the water is

well, like the asshole who pushed me in the deep end of the pool when I was 12 and didn't know how to swim told me, "figure it out or else", sometimes you gotta just go for it!!
Actually, I am nervous too when I try something new the first time, but, once you figure out who really knows what they are talking about, its easy to just pm them and ask them how they do it..
You obviously know your stuff man, so you will be an expert with this phone in no time!!
I did this going from Blazer 4.1 to CM9 with out any issues.

Quick question.. I can flash EL26 kernel again in mobile odin and should be able to restore my Blazer backup without any issues, correct? Blazer was backed up using Rogue EL29 kernel. Thanks!
Plus there's 5 android devices in my house all with different flashing methods it gets confusing keeping em all straight, got the evo4g, et4g, kindle fire, MoPho, and a gNote the et4g is the first Sammy I've used with Odin, my first android was an intercrap I mean intercept and it used the patched swupdater instead of Odin, so I'm still getting the hang of this method. I can flash the evo, kindle, intercept and photon blindfolded and drunker than a slut on prom night

I don't know how you keep all that **** straight; in my house, we ALL go with one "brand" of product, just to avoid that nightmare!!
If someone doesn't like it, I tell them that they get no tech support from me if they don't go with "the flow"!

Have you tried to get back into download mode? If you can then I'd suggest using Sfhub's one-click EL29.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in to help out.
In CWM recovery you can mount the internal or external memory so you can put a different ROM/kernel and flash it right in recovery. But still as Eso said it's best to get into download mode and use Odin
Not sure what you did and how you did it. Need more details. A lot more details. But if you can get to download mode (hold the power button + volume down till the boot screen shows), I'd follow Esoteric68's advice and use the one-click EL29 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 or try the EL26 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623684. Make sure you use the 'Full Reset' options.

This one. I had the same experience and was able to go DL mode. Download the one-click odin rom from sfhub's thread (having kenel included one) and flash it.
All he did was flash the El26 CWM kernel we all use in ICS to flash from Rom to Rom, he is safe on where he is at.
The reason he gets boot loops is because it's a GB kernel and not an ICS kernel. The GT-I9000 is normal when using this file and happens to everyone right now when they use it.
He can flash a new Rom and such from where he is at, or if he wants to keep his current Rom he has to find an ICS kernel to flash through CWM that he has.

I told you this would happen in our PM conversation yesterday. I told you it would be OK and you would just have to boot into ClockWork Mod recovery from there and flash a ROM/kernel/modem.
I am having issues booting into CWM EL26 + EL29 Recoveries.
I am able to odin the kernal but it just sticks on the Samsung logo if I try to access CWM.
It used to reboot and either go right into CWM or I would do Volume Up and Power to access.
I am currently on Paradox Rom GB27. I am trying to flash a ROM that needs EL26 or EL29 but cant access.
Any idea why I cannot access?
Also, if I have the charger plugged in (usb to comp), the screen gets stuck on a battery icon like its charging but doesnt move.
(think thats just because the charger is plugged in) BUT it seems that whatever this kernal is doing it the phone it is Freezing it at that first boot point.
I reflashed GB27 so im fine for now but just want to solve this mystery.
Any help appreciated! thanks!!

I use Mobile Odin to flash el29 direct boot kernel..and have never had an issue.. There is a lite version of mobile Odin on xda.. I would try that.. Make sure the md5's match on the kernel.. Mobile Odin will check it for you..

I can try mobile odin. I have the full version. I will give it a shot. The thing is
I had those kernals for over a year, always used them, worked fine.
Now all of a sudden they dont. I tried downloading agai , checked md5, everything appears correct.
I will post back the results.

No luck with mobile odin. Same thing. Stuck at the White Samsung Logo.
I am out of options. Unless there is another kernel I can try that is similar to el26 + el29.
Its weird how gb27 works fine... I just dont understand that. Could something be broke or misconfigured on my phone to not allow
installing el26 + el29?

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. I will stick with Paradox for now.
I wanted to try multi window rom but flashing on gb27 gives force closes and constant reboots.
Is it possible that once im on gb27, I cant go back and flash a gb rom? Ive done it
Before so thats why im stumped. Its like my phone doesnt support it.
I went on rwilco and downloaded multiple files and made sure they were with cwm.
They all do the same thing. Heres one for you... would water damage cause those kernels not to work?
Phones fine besides the kernel issue.
Also is it possible when doing cleanup on my phone and deleting
Old backups cause an issue? I thought to myself... wait I can restore an old rom with
El29! Lol no where to be found, already got rid of them.

I've flashed many ROMs..from GB to JB and back the other way..lol. Never had that problem..you could try to go into recovery and flash the format all x 2.. Then flash the el26 kernel zip..reboot recovery.. I don't know...might work..The format all x 2 will get ya ready for flashing GB/ICS so it might help..once on el26 you can use jb format all x 2 to get ready for the new jb ROM flash.. Just a thought...

Try doing an Odin stock rooted Rom flash on ICS and then working from there using mobile Odin. Sometimes I can't do the pc Odin for those kernels so I use mobile Odin and it works perfect.
If you're trying to flash the new SHOShock Rom by TD then I'm having issues with that too. My phone gets stuck on a boot cycle and if I try to flash a nandroid back up then it gets stuck on the Samsung screen. Only way out of it was flashing a GB27 rooted stock Rom in pc Odin.

Good looking out.. Nice to see people trying to help..This is the best forum...in my opinion..

Just going off from where you left off man. I figured I would put my 2 cents in cause it sure can be a headache sometimes. I noticed when I'm out of luck pc Odin always saves me. I agree this community is great when it comes to helping each other.

Had a similar issue yesterday. I flashed the el29 recovery without wiping the /preload first, and it would not boot. Booted back into gb27 agat recovery via Odin, wiped the /preload, flashed el29 zip, and a successful boot. Don't know if it is the same issue, but that is my story...

How did you wipe the preload? I'm having issues flashing shostock and that might help me successfully flash it. Thanks!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 4
First, download the el29 recovery kernel zip located in the rwilco repository.
Next either flash, or already be on the gb27 agat recovery kernel (also can be found in repository).
While in agat recovery, navigate to "mounts and storage"
Select "format /preload" (and whatever else you want to wipe out)
Back out, then "install zip from SD card"
Flash the el29 zip and you should be good to go.
