Well if you're someone that is going to need this serious of water protection and want it done right, you'll be happy to spend a few days away from your phone to have it done.
I don't personally have a need for this, but I'm sure there are many that do.
The thunderbolt video looked a little iffy, the touchscreen was going crazy and after he pulled it out of the water, it was giving an SD card error.

The touchscreen going crazy doesn't really mean much...the screen is capacitive, so it would respond to the water just like a finger (since the water would be conducive to the electrical impulses in the piping, his finger, etc...).
The problem with the SDCard is worrying, but I'm not sure why anyone who would *need* this kind of water protection wouldn't just buy a tough phone. I had one when I was on AT&T and I've left it at the bottom of a pool for a day, frozen it in ice, thrown it more times than I could count (I pitched and played left field in college...so it wasn't a short throw), and run it over with cars...it still works perfectly.
Point is, this kind of treatment is kind of meaningless. Anyone that needs it would just buy a phone properly created to sustain that kind of punishment, and anyone that didn't would have no reason to do it.

The touchscreen is just responding to electrical impulses transfered via the water. Not a big deal.
The error was for the SIM card, not SDcard. Many modern HTC devices put the antennas solely in the back cover, so when you remove it, it has no service except emergency calls.
gnex not supported?
does it even matter which phone you select?
I'm skeptical. If it were possible to waterproof electronics completely using their process, I can't believe that their little company hasn't been snapped up by one of the big manufacturers, who could then release a whole line of waterproof products and make billions on everything from computers to toys.

I disagree...having two kids and living in a wet area, if there really was a way to waterproof electronics using a thin coating that would allow complete immersion without damage, I'd be willing to pay a premium for items that are treated in that way, and I bet a lot of other people would, too.
I killed my SE X10 after dropping it in a sink of dishwater, and was pretty devastated by the total loss of the device....I've also had a Nintendo DSi end up in a bathtub and a Game Boy ruined by ending up in the bottom of a swimming bag under wet towels. Waterproofing would rawk, if it existed.
But I'm not sending my Gnex off to be coated and then taking the risk of immersing it to test it out, knowing that the warranty on it is void the instant I drop my precious phone off at the post office...
I'd be interested to see if it actually works. It intrigues me.

Friday night...out drinking with the lads in London.
It was about 1am, me and my friend were talking. He wanted to have a quick look at my phone, so i passed it too him. Somehow...between me putting it into his hands and he grasping it. The phone slipped away....straight into a full pint of Stella.
We paused for about 3 seconds...just looking at it (we were quite drunk), I saw he screen go off so straight away i just sighed and thought ''he better buy me a new one''.
Anyway once i realised what'd happened, i grabbed the phone out of the glass (without spilling any beer), quickly took the battery, sim car and sd card out. places all components into pocket and continued the night...wasn't too bothered as my friend knew it was his fault and told me that if it didn't work, he'll get me a new one.
Hot back home a few hours later, remembered what'd happened...straight to the bathroom...got the hair dryer and started drying....5 minutes later...moment of truth.
WOHOO everything was fine.
I was kind of hoping it was broken, because i've already dropped it on the floor numerous amounts of times and it has a small crack in the screen bottom right.
But alas, everything was fine...
so....HTC Desire...is actually stella-proof as well.....They should stick that on the box!
Even after dropping it in a pint...the battery still hasn't improved though. Can't get a day out of the battery yet. needed to get a battery pack for the damn thing..

I'm due an upgrade in August, so not too bothered about the Warranty. It should last until then. I don't expect any phone to last over 9 months these days.
All the stories I read about people dropping their phones on the ground and in drinks... I even know at least three people who've dropped their phones in the toilet.
I don't get it, even when I had a ****ty Nokia 5100 I don't think I even once dropped it!
Although I did drop-kick it across a garden once to test the shock-absorbent cover. Held up pretty well!
i treated my desire like royalty
i made extra sure never to drop it, scratch it, throw it etc
i put my phone in my pocket with my keys for literally half a minute and the screen is covered in scratches, unbelievable
Desire is almost Tia Maria and coke proof. Managed to fix it all but about 2 months later my trackpad has died. Otherwise all good.

Im scared ropping it on the floor as this big screen and build quality doesnt seems so good. Even in my full body silicone cases where only the screen is free. I even protected the keys lol.

What's the worst damage anyone here has done to there phone? I want to feel better about the dirty great scratch on top of my phone.
I dropped mine from a metre up onto a wooden floor and smashed the screen. £130 to fix it and they still havent returned it to me and thats nearly 2 weeks ago
Contemplating getting a iPhone 4 as i am severely pissed off with HTC's slowness and the build quality of the phone ...

I was thinking this!! LOL! dammed if I would be buying a mate a new phone after he was passing it to me drunk in a pub! I though only iPhone users got their phones out in pubs?
Desire has been in silicone case and screen protector since new... I kicked a Nokia down the road after it kept dropping calls... that was pretty much its life over... hundreds of bits. My Touch HD was key chipped but the paint was a problem on them.
congrats on getting the phone out the glass, without spilling any beer
I've dropped mine loads of times, got a nice scratch going down the centre of the screen due to keys in the pocket. lots of scratches on the paint work on the sides. a lovely big scuff on the back corner, a 10mm crack, bottom right side of screen.
And it wasn't my fault, he wanted to see it, took hold of it, i let go, he had it for a second, then it dropped in his pint.
The phones only £380, why wouldn't he have bought me a new one.

Wet Legend
My 15yo son managed to submerge his 3 week old Legend in a river - allegedly it was in his pal's backpack that was knocked into the water! He switched it on to see if it still worked before I had chance to dry it. Anyway it's part of my account and the phone is knacked luckily house contents covered it or he wasn't getting a new one.
Moral = Legends don't like rivers and being switched on before drying
Okay here's the deal.. I currently have an HTC Desire, and I recently tried the SGSII.. My desire is a FREAKING TANK! I cant hurt it no matter what I do, including sending it flying across the room more times then I care to admit.. the glass has one tiny light scratch from when it spent a day in my pocket with my keys.. The SGSII on the other hand, I dropped it (rather gently) from my pocket the day I got it, and the case got a huge ugly gouge!
We've all seen the video of the guy taking his keys to the glass, which is what you should be able to do with any smartphone, but how does the actual case housing stand up? anyone got any stories of terrible incidents it survived unblemished?
I am hard on my phones.. I dont deny it, so I want something that will handle a beating and I'm kinda skeptical of Samsung after my experience with the SGSII.
P.S. my alternate is the Amaze
I too had a Desire and I have to say I am very pleased with the build quality of the GN. I can't say I've thrown my brand new phone across the room or even dropped it yet (I'm not the most accident prone) but it seems to be a sturdy piece of kit!

If you were unimpressed by the build quality/durability of the SGSII casing, not much is going to change with your feelings on the GN. Its built pretty much out of the same materials. You're best off sticking with an extra case if you get it.

Dropping it on carpet just proves that the screen/internals won't break from a hard fall. I think what OP is referring to in the case of his old SGSII is big gouges or scratches in the casing, which the GN will probably suffer from the same way.

Yes I was referring to actually dropping it.. Every other week my desire gets knocked off the living room table, or the like. I don't actively throw it or go out of my way to be rough, but we have an active house, And things happen. I guess I'll have to look into a very slim case, as I usually just toss it in my Jeans front pocket And go.

Sounds like BS to me. There had to be something in his pocket putting a lot of pressure on the glass. And he must wear some skin tight jeans for that to happen... or something bashed his phone.

Just found out about this entire device waterproof coating called Liquipel. Looks pretty nice, what do you guys think? Worth it? Here are a couple videos where they demonstrate:
The videos are for the iPhone 4s, but they do the GS2 too. Their website has pricing and other info. I'm debating dropping the $60 for the process.

The only thing I wonder about is will you be able to remove the battery door to switch batteries. The iphone 4 doesnt have a battery door and I don't see how they would be able to apply this coating unless the battery door is permanently fixed to the device. Any thoughts on this?

From what they say, this process coats the entire device inside and out, it doesn't seal any openings or anything preventing water from getting inside the phone. Removing the battery cover wouldn't do anything to compromise the coating. The only thing that would be susceptible to water damage would be the non coated battery you switch in. I'm pretty sure they'd even remove the battery cover and set it beside the phone in the gas chamber to promote better circulation through the phone in the coating process.
Every wire, circuit, etc will essentially have the effect of this finger coated in superhydrophobic powder, and therefore won't rely on any other part of the phone for protection from coming into contact with water:
Snake oil. When water enters the phone and the battery is not immediately removed the components start to degrade and or short out. The coatings in printed circuit board will start to interact with all of the dissimilar metals and electrolysis will eat away the connections. A wet phone is a ticking bomb so to speak.
You might have some success with this product depending how wet the phone got, how long ago, and was the battery removed right away. Then again, you can do the same with denatured alcohol....
I don't think this is made to be water proof, I think it's more of a water resistance, phone use in rain. Minor spill etc.

Maybe on the outside, but the inner components won't be exposed to any touching or rubbing. How would it wear away?
And this is a preventative measure if you drop your phone in water/spill on it, they don't recommend you test it like they do in their demonstration.

But if the water isn't physically touching the components since it's repelled by the coating (see finger video) how would it do all that?
Well this was a video that went around a few months ago, from another company NeverWet. From what I understand there where two companies who where doing this, one of them was liquipel and the other was HzO (or something like that) liquipel said that they well do it on already existing devices while HzO had to be done during the manufacture process. Liquipel said their services cost around $60 per device. If I am not mistaken it was covered by geekbeat.tv

There is another company that is doing this, P2i. Applied at the end of the manufacturing process and already commercial according to the website... Coating is applied on the nanoscale and protects all compontents from water damage.

Obviously I wouldn't go dropping my phone in water to test this but it looks like HTC did manage to isolate the components enough to make it water resistant. I wonder why they didn't advertise it? Probably because of the lack of flaps I guess.
This would likely cause damage to the USB and headphone jack over time but its a cool test of the build quality for sure.

Yeah I'm happy they improved the already exceptional build quality. The M7 survived the most ridiculous torture test I've seen CNET administer while the S4 failed miserably. HTC has a lot more experience with phones than anyone else but Nokia really so it shouldn't be a surprise that they pulled this off but its still nice to see. And they did it without flaps, that's the real big FU to Sony
The review by CNET suggests this is not true.
The Bad: The One M8’s battery is not removable, making it harder to replace once the battery inevitably wears out. The phone's sealed chassis is not water-resistant, and the One M8's photos look less sharp than competitors'.

Not sure if you worded that out of order - but the whole idea of the rice, is to do it BEFORE attempting to turn it on. If you tried to turn it on before letting it sit a few days in rice, thats the point where the damage is done. (Turning it on still moist)
Watch carefully through the video, I have to question its authenticity.
If you notice, there are bubbles coming from the headphone jack. At multiple times the quantity and speed of these increase, often when the camera comes back on after altering it's position. I know the camera was said to run out of storage space etc, however the bubbles suggests that the phone has been removed and replaced.
thats with the bubbles i also saw - and when bubbles can go outside normally water can go inside too.
aluminium and water also not best friends. in my eyes the video is fake or manipulated.
My M8 got splashed with a glass of water and the screen died in seconds. After doing the rice thing for a day, it wont light back up, though the screen does still register touch. It is NOT water proof, and doesn't seem to be very resistant either, as it was a small amount that splashed on it.

Maybe build quality varies. I spilled a whole glass on it and absolutely nothing happened. Screen, and also the speakers, works great as before. I tested them immediately. Maybe I was just lucky. But still, a whole glass, and I saw how the water filled every speaker hole.

You know that they refurbish recalled units right? So you are advocating water damage to your current unit because you know that you will get a brand new one? This is vandalism!

So I have to take extra care of MY device because someone else will reuse it for half of the price I paid for it? It's mine until Samsung gives me a new one, so I can do whatever I want with it. Period.
Also, you can take underwater photos without problem. Guys it's IP68 certified, it means that it can get underwater more than 30 minutes. If you dry it as soon as you leave it out of water, there's no damage.
Yes, device is absolutely fine

1) "So I have to take extra care" - no, just don't damage to the thing with water.
2) "MY device" - no, your old device has been recalled, you will be getting a brand new one. The current one is the old recalled one, not yours.
3) "someone else will reuse it for half of the price I paid for it" - no... Someone might be you, getting back your refurbished device.
4) Do you really not understand how recalls work? They don't just throw away old, recalled devices...
You are truly an idiot if you are asking to damage recall units with water!
Lol it would be funny if they just change the battery and send the old ones back .

I'ts quite hard to understand your english, hence why I don't really get your point. As I said before, as long as you dry your device after submerging it and it's not salted water, there's no damage. I know how recalls work. Usually you get the same device/car/whatever you're recalling but fixed. Since this device is sealed and you can't replace the battery without dissasembling it, they give you a brand new one free of charge instead of fixing your actual device. Also, since the recall is optative, your device is still yours even if Samsung asks you to exchange it for a new one. The affected devices are dissasembled to use parts of it and/or go through a quality test to see if the device gets accepted to be refurbished. Does it have a scratch? Is it water damaged? Is it dented or shattered? Dumped. That's it. Samsung does not sell refurbished devices by themselves, usually a third party company offers a refurbished, no-warranty version for a discount. In the last statement Samsung says that they're commited to bring us 100% quality devices, hence why a water damaged refurbished device is not even a chance for them.

You clearly understand zero about water resistance nor the IP rating system. I am too tired to bother to write about it so do what you like with the mobile.

Its not "Water proof" The mobile has a certain specific water resistance. Please don't think you can take your mobile to depths of 1,5M and it will not be compromised. Depth is only a small part of the water resistance rating. Pressure is the major part. You can gently immerse your mobile in still clean water for 30 mins up to a depth of 1.5M. IF, however, you subject said mobile to movement, violent movement, such as swimming or diving in the pool then water may be forced due to pressure into the mobile even at 2" depth!
The way to look at the mobile water resistance is to accept that if you get it wet in the rain or use it with wet hands it may be fine but they are not underwater devices by any means and are not sold as underwater cameras, such cameras cost a fortune and are highly specialised.
Water 'pressure' is the deciding factor in a water resistant mobile. Active high pressures even in a few inches of water will cause a failure of those seals.
A test for you. Stand at the side of your pool and jump spreading your legs and taking your arms above your head, see how many you can manage in 20 seconds. Now enter your pool up to neck depth and do the same exercise. It feels like you have 10kg weights strapped on your arms and legs.....that feeling of added weight is water pressure.
Now imagine the pressure your mobile would be under if you repeated said exercise while holding your mobile. :highfive:
Hope you can understand my poor attempt at explaining this?

PS, WHY would one desire to take a mobile phone underwater to take photos in a swimming pool in any case? The sea, okay I get it even though the salt water would eventually damage those seals as will the chemicals in a swimming pool. Read the owners manual. Its very clear on this matter.

Yea true it does depend on what he means by underwater photos. I
If hes on about diving then yes that will damage the phone, especially in salt water. But If He just gently placed his phone under the surface of the water in a pool and took a photo I'm sure it would survive fine.
