Compatible for sure, but as far as I know just a couple of bugfixes. So wouldn't be something you would "see".
The major changes would be if we would get it with CM7 or CM9.

And what about samsung??? Do they will release ICS on our SGW? I heard some news that only on the S2, tablets and some other one... But not on ours... I'm impressed on how underated is this phone, even though it can be compared with a Galaxy S or even others which qualify for an ICS...

I don't think it will ever be updated officially.

Agreed.....but who cares what Samsung does......
There will be CM7......and ICS......in good time.......and no thanks to Samsung.......
It will be the Community which does it!!!
And it will be better without Samsung TW stuff, etc
robbing huge resources to no great effect.....
Just like my last phone, ZTE Blade..
Orange never released even Froyo 2.2......
But the community produced numerous fantastic GB ROM's, and there is also Cyanogen officially supported......
all this and more will come.....it is just a matter of time.

You just have to let it go with Samsung and their crappy marketing policies.
The shelf-life for our phone was decided to be very short.
Imagine: a mid-range phone with the latest iteration of Android. The sales of top-end phones will decrease dramatically.
That's why HTC, which is far more lungimirant about that, presented at the MWC the One V, same RAM but less clock on the processor, and guess what, with ICS.
God I hate you Samsung.

Hey hey,
I know T989D guys are anxious for some ICS news. I called in today to Samsung Canada for some news about the 100% battery bug (where the battery status will stay 100% until you reboot). Anyway, the gentleman on the phone acknowledged the bug and said unfortunately it would not be remedied until firmware version 4.0 was released. He also mentioned that 4.0 was definitely in the works for the T989D, however, he could not confirm the timing, "whether two weeks or two months, I just can't say".
So, there you have it. I confirmed with him again that indeed ICS was on it's way, he acknowledged it was and he definitely knew what he was talking about.
Cheers!
PS: If you're a T989D owner please post your ROM/Kernel experiences and please recommend your top ROM. Thanks!
Right now im running darksides ROM with included kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473077 it adds many options and cool boot screens I cant say ive ever had a crash... Gonna use it till ics comes out

i see this ending well... (looks back at similar vibrant threads)
when i bought my t989d from telus in november it said on the website Android 4.0 - available in 2012. This was one reason i bought the phone knowing that it will get it eventually. I do hope it comes damn soon though cause if the gsIII comes out and we still dont have it i will upgrade for sure.
If the T989D gets it, we get it! That's the awesomeness of having a closely related phone to Canadian carriers that care more about updates. The T959D (I believe D) got Gingerbread and we got nothing. Only difference was the antenna bands.

Who cares, once it drops, we just need to wait a bit and we will get CM9. Bell has the international version and they said in December they would get ICS in April. Looks promising for their date since the other 9100s got the update this week. So if the international version gets it April in Canada, i would expect May to be a good release date for the variants.

Agreed. I have a Sensation with ICS port and the only thing that really improved was battery life. A few tweaks here and there...really isnt a big deal and other than better battery management, I dont see what all the fuss is about...the facial unlock that works 15% of the time maybe?

The fuss is many fold. Better application management. Better Task manager. First Android OS that I had not had to run a Task Killer on to be stable (on Vibrant). Slicker, smoother faster UI. Better Memory management and of course as noted better battery life because of all of the above. Finally, it's System settings screen has a better and more functional layout.
The face unlock is mostly gimmick but nice nonetheless. I will use it once I get it.
Another really big thing is the ICS stock unlock is so far the best I have used.
once the official ICS drop for our phones, the first thing any Dev would do is rip off TW and replace it with something else more AOSP like
personally i've never used any stock launcher
the first thing i do all the time is freeze TW or stock launcher, and replace them with Go Launcher EX
the important stuff of ICS is not the looks of it, but rather the raw power by the 3.x Linux Kernel it uses, and the real usage of SMP
all the top layer stuff can be changed or replaced by something else
Just thought I'd ask since nobody else did. I really hope they fix the audio latency issues and improve the stock email client. Keeping my expectations low since ICS has been so great already. All that needs to be fixed is the foundation of the Android OS so that longstanding issues go away.
It will probably be 4.0.5. You really think they'll name it 5.0 just for those small changes.
My money is on Jellybean being 4.1, not 5.0. A whole point release implies a complete redesign, whereas I really think they wouldn't do that twice in a row. ICS is a good base, and needs refining, not a complete overhaul.
will probably be 4.1 or 4.5 version

I'm thinking that as well, but publications are calling it 5.0 so I called it that as well.
For such a short period of time from releasing ICS, I don't think they'll name it 5.0 as I assume there won't be any changes. 5.0 would have to be something revolutionary like honeycomb
Think of Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread, they were 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 respectively and were very much alike. I hardly think Jelly Bean will be THAT much different from ICS to need a new whole number (say 5 or 6).
It'll most likely be 4.1. Not 4.0.X.

4.1
Little changes, performance improvements, some new functionalities and services announced.

How long do you guys think Android will stay at 4.X? Considering that only 7% of devices have 4.x, it could be another 2 years before we see a rollout of the 5.x series.
Definitely 4.1 which is what the Nexus 7 tablet is running.

I don't think that the carriers lack of pushing out the updates will stop googles improvements on their operating system.
I'd also agree that it'll probably be 4.1. I can't see Google releasing a 5.x bump so soon after ICS. Jelly Bean will probably be the Gingerbread to ICS' Froyo.

I totally agree that Froyo was the worst, it's so slow and ugly :silly: Gingerbread was a huge improvement and Ice Cream Sandwich is an even bigger improvement, but at the moment not all the power of it can be harnessed by our DEFY, so I'd say that Gingerbread is the best. But Motorola is to blame for that, cause with those proper custom kernels, ICS would be flying So, if no way for custom kernels to run arises, I'm guessing that troubles with missing libraries will be even bigger with Jelly Bean, so we might just not even see a CM based on JB for DEFY
Found the Jellybean wallpapers and the new bootanimation over at Android authority!
>>>>>Android Jelly Bean Goodies<<<<<
Has anyone tried the new Jelly Bean VoiceSearch/GoogleQuickSearchBox on our ICS builds yet? I've been searching all over, no-one has yet to post it. You guys had any luck?
I've just tried Jelly Bean on Galaxy Nexus, it's way more faster than ICS because it has this Project Butter (newer hwa) which makes UI constant on 60FPS, so no more UI lags!
Jelly Bean is based on ICS so there won't be so much trouble about porting it because we already have ICS
I think the main question would be whether Project Butter will run with our Froyo/GB Kernel we have to stick with?!

it will awesome for all of us , if it happened some how , our developers are best of all others ,
we were just given eclair , we had froyo(modded roms) , GB roms ( best and great performance ) , and we had ICS all good , except some issues due to locked bootloaders, otherwise we at this time could had best ICS rom Available ....... developers are trying their best working day & night for us ,
I am sure that we all will have jelly bean ,( not fully functional though ), but our great developers will make it happen for us all .......
once this Bootloader thing gets solved some how , can't say how ,
we gonna have rocking roms with overall best performance than all the device present in this xda forum ...... and i can bet on this ......
atlast thanks to all the developers of DEFY & DEFY PLUS .......

First, there is not a finished and stable CM rom and is not so good start with new projects at this point.

Because gingerbred on galaxy w is simply perfect and there is no reason or features in CM9 or in CM10 that justify porting and waste of resources and time.

There is no finished CM ROM but stable I honestly think the latest CM9 build is stable for daily use and not so good, lol CM9 runs graphic heavy games a whole lot better than GB even when its OC.
Oh yes GB is much much smoother and better than ICS and JB, sigh. Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda premium
Actually, I'm supporting the development of CM9 and CM10 because 'in case of' the ROM becomes standard, I don't have to learn it.
Take an example of the ye old Win XP
Nowadays, Windows 7 has become the new standard of the computing world (of Windows, obviously).
Yes, you can still make Windows XP compatible program (with more cost and testing) , but can you assure that your program (which is made in .. say Win 7 with .NET Framework 3.5 / 4) could run w/o prob in Windows XP while your program works seamlessly in Win 7?
My point here is that we have to take measure on which ROM has brighter future? Will GB be updated again, with more fantastic feature, or will ICS and JB got them?
The problem is that there will be a hell lot of bugs, maybe even a brick... So when I try a new ROM, best I wait till it has only a few bugs that can be replaced with 3rd party apps (eg. Fm radio)

Its the right decision, in my opinion - working on a Gingerbread-ROM does not make any sense at the moment - From features to smoothness, ICS is by far the better choice. Although RAM is a bottleneck for some purposes on the Galaxy W, the device as a whole has enough power to profit from the enhancements that came with ICS and JB.

that phone have similar hardware configuration like our phone, just 800Mhz dual core cpu and 768Mb ram, I guess its about 500Mb because 268Mb
deserved for system, and mali-400MP GPU. Just a slight improvisation from our i8150.

what da hell samsung? uour phone spec isn't low enough for ICS, your bull**** touchwiz blows everything down. crappy marketing strategies
Even Samsung Galaxy S Duos http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_duos_s7562-4883.php comes with ICS
Speechless as it is much weaker than our SGW, in term of CPU & GPU, the only thing it wins is the amount of RAM
There are a lot of ICS phones with 512MB RAM from HTC & Sony, if Samsung is willing to give us support, we would get ICS without problem for sure since Samsung got a big team to work it out, really quite a bad support from Samsung for our phone, luckily we got Arco and some developers who work hard to bring ICS to us really thankful to them!

yes this is right. support al the dev!!
I always look at the bright side of this.
If sammy release update ICS or JB, then we will loose the excitement of custom ROM.
What I mean is like the waiting time of new custom ROM version, the moment when devs release new update and we download it and flash it to our beloved SGW. It's so exciting!!!
Here, we have many custom ROMs and every new release is getting better and better. To be honest, I might prefer custom ROM. Because even if sammy release update, I'm sure it will full with sammy's bloatware.
One day, I met other SGW user. He is just a regular user and don't know anything about flashing. He looked at my phone and say: whoaa..!!! how did you do that?? Can you do it to my phone??
My point is: I DON'T CARE if sammy release update or not. As long as there are custom ROMs, that's more than enough for me
maybe we are not worried about this because there are custom rom. but I feel sorry for those who use stock rom and hope about rom upgrade.

Seconded!!!!
And the salt into the wound is that the Galaxy Ace 2 is £70 cheaper on O2 Uk pay as you go than my Galaxy W was 10 months ago

Yes but surely ROMs like Cyanogen 9 would be much further along and have taken less time to develop and debug if an official Sammy ICS ROM for Galaxy W had been available as a starting point for modding/improving.

you're not completely right, for example if we had official ics we would not reverse engineer camera and some other hw, so creating 4.x customs would be easier, but we had just to rely on our devs and huawei u8860 software

Developers would be able to customized ICS if a stock ICS is already available than creating from scratch. ICS is different from GB. Thats why devs are having difficulties in fixing stuffs like camera for phones that do not have ICS. Devs would love to use working libs for ICS phone-related components. Then porting JB would be much faster too since little is different from ICS.

I realize that. But I also know that pissing off to sammy and curse them won't change anything.
What I mean is instead of pissing off to sammy, we should be grateful because we have devs that work very hard porting ICS for our phone.

Jelly Bean comes to support phone with NFC device. I think that the cause of the making jelly Bean to Ace 2. Don't worry guys... We have development Forum, we have developers and we have Arco. Not to mention, but ace 2 has no their own thread. You check on search box, no ace 2 comes out. Lol. Probably that's why Sammy feel pity for them and make them a jelly Bean. LMFAO.

I really wish this was true, and I wish Sammy would bring this update out NOW!
Not because I have one of these phones, but because that firmware could be the base for the developers working on our Wonder. That means it's gonna be easier to port, and we'll have a stable CM10 in no time! :highfive:
