You don't NEED the cm7r2 hboot. The ROM will flash fine on stock hboot. cm7r2 will give you more space for apps though.
There are many variations on rooting/S-OFF/recovery installing/ flashing these days. For every person who chooses to reply here, you will probably get a different set of recommendations. The following is my personal recommendation:
1) Download the ROM.
2) Save to SD card.
S-OFF:
3) S-OFF your phone using alpharev
4) Flash cm7r2 hboot via fastboot if required
Install a New Recovery:
5) Download 4ext Recovery Updater from the market (free)
6) Run the app
7) From the app, install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3
Backup:
8) Boot into recovery and nandroid backup your current ROM
9) Boot into android on current ROM
9a) Backup all apps with MyBackup Root if required
10) Copy your entire SD card contents to pc in case of screw-ups later (or new partitions)
Partition:
Do you have an ext3 or ext 4 partition on your SD card (between 500MB &1GB)?
If yes, go to (13), otherwise:
11) Format SD card (from recovery) with 500-1000 MB ext 4 partition, the remainder FAT 32
12) Copy SD card contents back to card from PC (with card reader)
Wipe & Flash:
13) Boot back into recovery (Power up while Volume-down button held in, then select Recovery with volume-down followed by power button)
14) Full wipe of phone (Format all partitions except SD card)
15) Flash ROM
16) Boot into Android
17) Restore apps if required
Radio:
18) Flash of newer radio recommended. The one in my sig is popular (not the very latest, but reportedly better battery life than the newer .23 version). You can't flash the zip if you have cm7r2 as the /cache/ partition is to small - you will need to flash the .img via fastboot. Alternatively you could flash the radio.zip after stage (5) and before stage (9).
EDIT (17 Feb): S-OFF is required before using 4ext recovery. Above sequence of events edited to reflect this.
excellent guide thank you very much for taking the time to write that.
I have an issue though, when trying to install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3 everything seems to install fine but when i reboot to recovery its still my old recovery by koush that i used for jailbreaking my ps3.
am i doing something wrong?

Hi,
Sorry, been away on holiday for the last week so only just catching up with the thread.
My mistake in post 2. As several others have pointed out, S-OFF is required before using 4ext. I will edit post 2 to show the correct sequence of events.

Hello there,
I'm looking for a gingerbread ROM with 3.0 Sense to it, and both HiApk and InsertCoin look amazing.
What are the major differences and which is recommended?
Thanks in advance!
InsertCoin is better !i use it for a long time !
Also, I would definitely go for InsertCoin. I tried both, but HiApk was a bit laggy.
Kudos you two
Just FYI, InsertCoin is mostly based on RcMixS.

Another question:
I had my desire rooted by using unrevoked few months ago. I now notice I have ClockWork 2.5 and my device is S-ON.
Correct my humble try to understand:
I need to make a nandroid backup, go S-OFF (1. by using unrevoked? alpharev?), update ClockWork to 3.2 (2. what is the difference to amon-ra?), and flash InsertCoin (3. do I have to flash a radio or does it come with one?)
Thanks!!

S-OFF using alpharev, also i would suggest going for CM7 HBOOT if you gonna use InsertCoin, and yes you probably need CWM 3.x.x.x because its supporting new installer scripts which are required in some ROM's.
Use 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08 or 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 Radio, see which is best for you.
InsertCoin is constantly developed and the stable version is very reliable and fast.
Insertcoin!!!

hboot partition table
if you mean which HBOOT to use,
then you need
"Bravo Stock 1.8" for ROM InsertCoin a2sd
"Bravo CM7" for the ROM InsertCoin cm7 (hence the cm7 in the name)
The "download" files are for updating the hboot with fastboot command from your computer (you need the ADB toolkit or one the of fastboot GUI interfaces you can find in the HTC Desire development thread).
The "PB99IMG" files are for updating the hboot directly on your phone without computer. It requires to boot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode and is probably riskier than the computer method.
Anyway you need to first S-OFF with alpharev iso (which will also update the recovery to CWM-AlphaRev 2.5.1.8 with dark blue color and keep the default bravo stock 1.8 partition table) and then you can update the partition table to CM7.

Radio
InsertCoin rom does not come with radio.
You should flash the recommended radio. it is better to do it with fastboot command (or GUI tool) from a computer. And it is the only way to do it after flashing the CM7 HBOOT as the cache partition is then too small (5Mb) for allowing radio flashing from recovery.
Recovery fake flash
If you don't want to change your recovery you could try to fake flash the 3.2 recovery when you need it.
Fake flash means to load another recovery (3.2) while in recovery (2.5) by simply applying a zip file. You then have all the feature of the 3.2 recovery without permanently installing it.
1) put the zip with 3.2 recovery on your SD card (zip in thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039954)
2) boot in recovery
3) apply the zip (like you would flash a rom, but it only loads the 3.2 recovery operating system without removing/deleting any file in your phone). You should notice the text color change and a few more options in the menu.
4) enjoy
I've been doing this for all the InsertCoin GB versions (well at least 30 times so...) and never had any problem. This allows to flash zip with amend and edify scripts by selecting either the default recovery or the 3.2.
You can also use the fake flash method to run Amon-RA recovery.
Fake Flash is more or less what what Rom Manager is doing when you use it to reboot in recovery mode (but it only supports a restricted set of recovery versions that have been tuned to work with Rom Manager).
Another benefit of fake flash is that you can still use your old nandroid backups, as it it not recommended to restore with recovery X a backup made with recovery Y.
[advanced] You can also fake flash the img recovery with fastboot from your computer
By the way there are also detailed info in the wiki (it was for the InsertCoin HD but most of it still applies):
http://insertcoin.baadnwz.eu/wiki/InsertCoin_Data%2B%2B_RoM
Hope it helps...
Helps? This is golden! Thank you so much for your time and effort!
I prefer IC, more than HiApk.
I don't mean to be OT but what about IC vs Reflex? I tried both and maybe Reflex is a little faster than IC.
I prefer InsertCoin for gingerbread and Sense over other ROM. I tried both , but InsertCoin is faster and more stable.
1. Why can't I flash alpharev's Bravo CM7 .img immediately?
2. Where is alpharev's livecd .iso? Is it necessary to use it and not to fastboot flash immediately?
3. Why shouldn't I use "unrevoked forever" (1) s-off tool?
1. If s-off goes wrong, it won't change partition table's sizes
2. http://alpharev.nl/alpharev.iso
3. It supports only few Desires
JUst to throw a cat among the pigeons...RCMix, FTW!!
Update:
First of all, I gparted the sd-card (3.5 fat32, 512mb ext3, 32mb swap).
Then I had success doing s-off (I flashed a stock rom prior to that) using alpharev's cd, flashbooted (so easy using these tools on linux) alpharev's Bravo CM7 .img, wiped it all, flashbooted CWM 3.2 and now flashing InsertCoin v45 Nightly <3 <3
More updates soon, and ofcourse, many thanks to all of you!
Update:
It's working quite good, besides few lags and slow-downs of Sense.
Flashed a new radio as well, and right now it seems wonderful.
Kudos to alpharev, baadnwz and all you guys too!
Hi Everyone,
I have been on this forum for good time now and i have been reading so much about customization, rooting, flashing, installing ROMs and finally i decided to go for installation of ROM on my HTC Desire. But i was totally confused and do not have much of clarity and for that reason, i will try to make this as a project to understand and install with the help of you guys.
My criteria for selecting a ROM was on basis of 2 things.
- No Bugs
- Unlimited space for apps
so i have decided for Supernova ROM
So lets get started.
Boot screen details below
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-031d

Checking status of my phone.
1. Is it rooted ?
Yes (few months back)
2. Using which method ?
Unrevoked
3. Check for S-off or s-on?
S-OFF (revolutionary)
4. Check Hboot if changed then Change to Stock Hboot?
Stock Hboot (thanks to Nuntius)
5. Create a Nandroid backup
Done
6. Create Titanium Backup
Done
7. Partition with Gparted Live (Two partitions: 1st Fat32 primary, 2nd ext4 primary)
- Downloaded and burned on to the Disk
- 4GB microSD in the phone.
- Bought Scandisk 16GB Class 4 card, want to use 16GB card so i was thinking should i wipe the phone first with 4GB in the phone and then change the microSD card to 16GB & then do the partition?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Do Wipe.
Pending
9. Do 4ExtRecovery Recovery
Pending
Note: i will be updating this post with latest information
PS: If anyone wants to give me inputs ideas on selection of ROM, usage of applications/methods it would be great help.
Forum Admin: Sorry if i posted this in wrong forum.
Hi,
4. If your phone is "only" rooted, you have stock hboot. To change hboot, the phone has to be S-OFF.
7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK-tJe8pXE
Happy new year
3. Unrevoked should give you S-off, else use Revolutionary: http://revolutionary.io/
4. Get different boot at http://alpharev.nl/. Personally I use CM7r2 boot so I can use AD2SDX.
9. 4EXT Recovery is imo the best Recovery. You can backup/partition/install a rom in there without some boot cd. Once your Hboot is S-offed, you can download the free version of the market and flash the recovery using that program.
Personally I use Sebastian15's Runnymede 4.0.3SE atm. Very easy to install with a touch based install even! Just remember if u have CM7r2 boot to select the "Customize" install and select the AD2SDX way in the install. I've got like 400MB+ free with enough apps.
Another tip. Get a class4+ SD card (gonna shop for 1 now). Stock SD for me was class 2. Class 10 is the fastest, and for a 4 or 8GB you don't have to pay much
Thanks KreeZiE for the inputs

As this is my first ROM installation, i am focused on getting bug free ROM, as per Runnymede ROM, they have following bugs: Skin, Lockscreen, Wallpaper Preview ( Any Sense 3.5 has it ), press menu, select grid/list.

Thanks for the tip, i already got 16GB class 4 SD card.
It's just the scrolling previews that don't work (you see them in grey). If you switch to the grid/list view you can see the previews as normal. You won't find any problems using the skins/wallpapers/lockscreens when you normally use your phone.
In your case I would start using revolutionary to S-off, which you will need anyway. Backup your SD to be sure ofcourse. Install 4EXT and use 4EXT for a full backup of your current "rom" and copy that to a pc so you can always go back. Then experiment with some roms to get the one you personally like best. Use Titanium backup or some other backup program (using Backup Everything, Titanium backup and SMS Backup+ myself) to save personal data.
And if you don't already have done it, use Gmail contacts to save your phone numbers. I've tried a couple of roms, and everytime I enter my Google account after an install my contacts were there waiting for me

Welcome to the club!!
Hi,
I'm trying to install Sandvolds ICS using 4EXT Recovery, which I bought. I'm using this German guide: brutzelstube.de/2012/ice-cream-sandwich-perfekt-auf-dem-desire-installieren/
As I switched to a 32GB Class 10 SD card, previously unused on Android, some stuff was different and I experienced problems, but here's where I am now:
- Backupped everything, although I don't plan to use any backup
- I wiped everything and installed MildWild 5, which seems to run without problems - but I don't like it
- I bought and installed 4ext recovery from Google Play, using the "Beginner Mode"
- Granted Superuser rights
- Did Online-Installation/ Update - and now comes the problem
- Flashed (?) update 4EXT RecoveryTouch 1.0.0.5 RC6 - it says retry and then counts from 1 to 4, then the phone restarts
- when Android is up and running again, I open the 4EXT app again. No matter which option I choose, it says "4EXT Recovery needs to be installed first" - but isn't that what I already did? I end up in a circle
When I shut down my phone and start it using Vol- and Power On, I enter a white screen with text in different colors in the top third and anroids on the bottom - I think that's HBOOT, but surely not 4EXT.
It would be very nice to receive some help! I hope my description is good enough to get the problem.
BTW: The first two lines of the white screen say "BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON, HBOOT-0.93.0001".
you need to be s-off to change recovery
use revolutionary to s-off (your current hboot is supported), very easy once you follow the guides
then use the app again to flash 4ext recovery

We can all see that you're tourist here.
I assume you had clockworkmod (or some other recovery), but to make 4ext working you need to be s-off not s-on.
Go to revolutionary site
www.revolutionary.io
and follow the guide to accomplish s-off. Then you'll be able to flash 4ext recovery.

Which hboot?
Sd-ext partition?
Ext partition file system?
Full wipe?
For me it all worked, for you it's probably also the S-Off you didn't fix.
I have some little problems with this ROM, it's a little slow, I sometimes get FCs and I'm running out of app space, but all of that is probably because I installed dozens of apps, including really big ones.
I'm buying a new battery now, ICS is great, so I'll keep my phone for longer than two years
Hello XDA members
This is my first post. I've read all the rules and mantra's and watched the video. I hope someone can help me. I've read a lot of threads prior to posting, but i'm stuck. The thing is, i'm not quite sure where i am in the process of rooting my Desire and freeing up space. This is because it's a couple of month's since i began the process, and i stopped because i got stuck back then. I should have posted right away, having everything i've done fresh in memory, but i didn't. I now understand that i tried to do a lot of technical stuff before actually knowing what i was doing. My Desire runs Gingerbread 2.3.3
This is the guide i was using: techspalace.blogspot.dk/2011/10/perm-root-htc-desire-gingerbread-233.html
My thinking was, that i needed to root to be able to run apps that i can use to install app's to SD card.
I don't think i've rooted the Desire yet.
Well today i followed the guide in the link, and i tried to get into recovery mode, but i couldn't.

- should i continue and install Mounts2sd or CronMod? - but I need to be rooted to do this right?

Thanks.
Now i recommend you to flash the supersu zip i linked earlier, backing up all your apps with titanium backup, and installing a custom rom. A custom rom, besides probably having an integrated a2sd script, is a lot faster than the stock rom, and it doesn't have bloatware.

Ok, ive flashed supersu, i don't think i need to backup any app because i ran a fresh recovery before starting this thread - or do i? Installing a custom rom you say...does this mean it's rooted now because of supersu?
can you recommend a custom rom?
You backup your personal apps, like.. i don't know... a game with a highscore. If you don't have any, then you don't need to backup. Maybe only contacts, and sms. Check the play store apps that do that.
I recommend starting with MildWild Redux, the one i'm using now.

It's fast and stable, and easy to handle, plus you get low battery consumption.
If you want a sense rom, try RSK. It's fast and stable as well, and you can tweak it from the RSK settings.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431908
Steps to flash:
1. Download the rom zip, and place it on your sd-card.
2. Backup your apps and contacts (optional)
3. Boot in recovery.
4. Select the "backup" option. This is a nandoid backup. If anything goes wrong with the rom you're trying to flash, this will restore your previous rom entirely.
5. In the wipe menu, select "wipe all partitions except sd-card".
6. Install the rom.
7. Wait for it to boot (first boot up to 15 min).
8. Enjoy.

Yes, you are now rooted, as you have supersu :good: Now you can mess through your system files :silly: Or, you can follow abaaaabbbb63 reccommendations and try some custom ROMs.
Mildwild cm 8 is also good
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
DONE!
I Now have i Mildwild installed.Thank you, you have been very patient and helpful.
Everything is running great.

Hi.
I have an issue with my Desire bravo. I can't install Evervolv's KK 4.4.
A year ago I used unrevoked3 to root my phone. It installed CWM 2.5.0.7. I had tried many 4.2.2 ROMs and than decided to stick with MildWild.
Now I want to try KK4.4 but I simply can't install it. CWM always writes: Status 0. Installation arborted.
I tried to update CWM through ROM manager but it won't update it. It writes that current version is 5.0.2.0, however when I boot into Recovery I can see that I have the same CWM.
Can somebody help me please?
Thanks.

I tried to flash it without success. Than I went to Hboot and it wrote that I had S-ON (that's strange). So I used Revolutionary to S-OFF my phone. It flashed CWM 4.0.1.4 and waw - everything works!

Lastly, uninstall ROM manager, it's bad for Desire. You don't need it.
As long as you only use CWM to install / wipe you'll be ok, do not use it to partition your sd card.
4EXT is generally a better recovery, and is also recommended for partitioning, you can install it using the 4EXT app or flash it through fastboot commands.
Now that you're S-OFF it's much more powerful (e.g. you can change hboot). You were wasting a lot of memory while S-ON with stock hboot and mildwild.

I have already flashed 4EXT.
What's the advantage of using custom hboots? I think that Evervolv's roms can be flashed only on stock hboot.
I have flashed Evervolv's nightly KK4.4. It seems to work OK (but I liked Jelly Bean's interface more).
Thank you guys.

custom hboots simply allow for more space, one of the primary reasons for gaining s-off and rooting in the first place
a custom hboot generally has a smaller /system and /cache and therefore more /data (internal memory)
depending on which mildwild rom, you only filled 100 to 130MB of the 250MB /system partition on stock hboot, which wastes max ~150MB. You could have used cm7r2 hboot or similar to nearly double the /data partition and hence more space for apps.
You're right though, now beside the point for ROMs like Evervolv which require stock hboot....
