[Project] Installing ROM on My Desire - Desire General

Hi Everyone,
I have been on this forum for good time now and i have been reading so much about customization, rooting, flashing, installing ROMs and finally i decided to go for installation of ROM on my HTC Desire. But i was totally confused and do not have much of clarity and for that reason, i will try to make this as a project to understand and install with the help of you guys.
My criteria for selecting a ROM was on basis of 2 things.
- No Bugs
- Unlimited space for apps
so i have decided for Supernova ROM
So lets get started.
Boot screen details below
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF

4. Check Hboot if changed then Change to Stock Hboot?
Stock Hboot (thanks to Nuntius)
5. Create a Nandroid backup

- Downloaded and burned on to the Disk
- 4GB microSD in the phone.
- Bought Scandisk 16GB Class 4 card, want to use 16GB card so i was thinking should i wipe the phone first with 4GB in the phone and then change the microSD card to 16GB & then do the partition?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Do Wipe.
Pending
9. Do 4ExtRecovery Recovery
Pending
Note: i will be updating this post with latest information
PS: If anyone wants to give me inputs ideas on selection of ROM, usage of applications/methods it would be great help.
Forum Admin: Sorry if i posted this in wrong forum.

Hi,
4. If your phone is "only" rooted, you have stock hboot. To change hboot, the phone has to be S-OFF.
7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK-tJe8pXE
Happy new year

3. Unrevoked should give you S-off, else use Revolutionary: http://revolutionary.io/
4. Get different boot at http://alpharev.nl/. Personally I use CM7r2 boot so I can use AD2SDX.
9. 4EXT Recovery is imo the best Recovery. You can backup/partition/install a rom in there without some boot cd. Once your Hboot is S-offed, you can download the free version of the market and flash the recovery using that program.
Personally I use Sebastian15's Runnymede 4.0.3SE atm. Very easy to install with a touch based install even! Just remember if u have CM7r2 boot to select the "Customize" install and select the AD2SDX way in the install. I've got like 400MB+ free with enough apps.
Another tip. Get a class4+ SD card (gonna shop for 1 now). Stock SD for me was class 2. Class 10 is the fastest, and for a 4 or 8GB you don't have to pay much

Thanks KreeZiE for the inputs

The Unrevoked method didnt work as per the instructions, things got complicated and finally the phone got rooted. I guess becos of the complication before getting root dint cause S-OFF.

It depends on what ROM i am installing.

As this is my first ROM installation, i am focused on getting bug free ROM, as per Runnymede ROM, they have following bugs: Skin, Lockscreen, Wallpaper Preview ( Any Sense 3.5 has it ), press menu, select grid/list.

Thanks for the tip, i already got 16GB class 4 SD card.

It's just the scrolling previews that don't work (you see them in grey). If you switch to the grid/list view you can see the previews as normal. You won't find any problems using the skins/wallpapers/lockscreens when you normally use your phone.
In your case I would start using revolutionary to S-off, which you will need anyway. Backup your SD to be sure ofcourse. Install 4EXT and use 4EXT for a full backup of your current "rom" and copy that to a pc so you can always go back. Then experiment with some roms to get the one you personally like best. Use Titanium backup or some other backup program (using Backup Everything, Titanium backup and SMS Backup+ myself) to save personal data.
And if you don't already have done it, use Gmail contacts to save your phone numbers. I've tried a couple of roms, and everytime I enter my Google account after an install my contacts were there waiting for me

You don't NEED the cm7r2 hboot. The ROM will flash fine on stock hboot. cm7r2 will give you more space for apps though.
There are many variations on rooting/S-OFF/recovery installing/ flashing these days. For every person who chooses to reply here, you will probably get a different set of recommendations. The following is my personal recommendation:
1) Download the ROM.
2) Save to SD card.
S-OFF:
3) S-OFF your phone using alpharev
4) Flash cm7r2 hboot via fastboot if required
Install a New Recovery:
5) Download 4ext Recovery Updater from the market (free)
6) Run the app
7) From the app, install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3
Backup:
8) Boot into recovery and nandroid backup your current ROM
9) Boot into android on current ROM
9a) Backup all apps with MyBackup Root if required
10) Copy your entire SD card contents to pc in case of screw-ups later (or new partitions)
Partition:
Do you have an ext3 or ext 4 partition on your SD card (between 500MB &1GB)?
If yes, go to (13), otherwise:
11) Format SD card (from recovery) with 500-1000 MB ext 4 partition, the remainder FAT 32
12) Copy SD card contents back to card from PC (with card reader)
Wipe & Flash:
13) Boot back into recovery (Power up while Volume-down button held in, then select Recovery with volume-down followed by power button)
14) Full wipe of phone (Format all partitions except SD card)
15) Flash ROM
16) Boot into Android
17) Restore apps if required
Radio:
18) Flash of newer radio recommended. The one in my sig is popular (not the very latest, but reportedly better battery life than the newer .23 version). You can't flash the zip if you have cm7r2 as the /cache/ partition is to small - you will need to flash the .img via fastboot. Alternatively you could flash the radio.zip after stage (5) and before stage (9).
EDIT (17 Feb): S-OFF is required before using 4ext recovery. Above sequence of events edited to reflect this.
excellent guide thank you very much for taking the time to write that.
I have an issue though, when trying to install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3 everything seems to install fine but when i reboot to recovery its still my old recovery by koush that i used for jailbreaking my ps3.
am i doing something wrong?

You flash them during rooting via unrevoked? Which will unlock nand to flash recovery

Hi,
Sorry, been away on holiday for the last week so only just catching up with the thread.
My mistake in post 2. As several others have pointed out, S-OFF is required before using 4ext. I will edit post 2 to show the correct sequence of events.

[Q] No space for apps - SD-ext on stock 2.2 ROM?

Hi - this is an old topic but I've not been able to find an answer to this question...
My wife has a stock Desire GSM locked to T-Mobile UK with their stock 2.2 ROM. It's not rooted and there's no custom recovery. She's always running into the 15MB 'low storage' warning even with as much automated 'App2SD' as possible.
As a result *I* get a lot of earache about 'this bloody phone' and I'd like it to stop.
I don't want to flash a custom ROM, but if I root the phone with unrevoked, will I be able to take advantage of an 'sd-ext' partition on the MicroSD card so she can have a gig of apps rather than the ****ty 140MB on the internal storage?
What other apps / scripts / packages would be needed? The current ROM works fine - I would rather not replace it if possible since the settings / apps restore will be slow and painful.
Cheers,
Gavin.
Check Supernova rom. It's the stock Gingerbread update from HTC plus the space. I understand that you don't wanna flash a different rom but it's worth considering.

Hm, interesting... so for that I'd just run unrevoked and assuming that installs ClockworkMod recovery OK, I'd copy the Flashable ZIP from http://supernova.droidzone.in/?page_id=24 to the SD card and flash that from recovery?
But yeh, keeping the existing ROM would be gold
Yeah in a nutshell. But first check what hboot version you have. You may need to run Revolutionary instead of Unrevoked. Also once you got that part done, instead of using clockworkmod recovery search for 4ext recovery touch its a lot better. Then with that recovery you can partition your sd card. Yeah its a lot of work.
Read the supernova thread or the website where you can download the rom. If I am not mistaken you can actually flash the rom without losing data. Just read the instructions carefully as its a little bit different from the usual process if I can remember correctly.
That's the closest rom where you can get the stock goods from htc. Check the everything desire thread on the dev section there might be some other roms there that is stock plus apps2sd.
via xda app
If you just don't want to change your rom, you can use Link2SD. It is found on the market, with it you can control which apps are moved and what is moved (app, dalvik, libs). It also has an "auto-move" feature, so your wife won't need to move everything manually. But of course you'll first have to create the ext4 partition.
Teppics stock rooted GB Rom is also worth a look, and you might also get away with not wiping data. Once rooted recommend download Titanium Backup from market and use it to backup user apps, then do a full nandroid backup before doing anything else. Any problems restoring nandroid will get you back to where you were. Also, 4Ext recovery is good but this requires S-OFF and is a separate process if you root via Unrevoked. Read up and read it again before starting, will stand you in good stead.

Ahh "Link2SD" - that looks like a winner - I knew there would be a solution but no amount of Google-fu opened it for me... Link2SD - that's the magic incantation )
I'll give that a shot =)
As for the Unrevoked part - I can't do a full Nandroid backup until I get past that part.. so fingers crossed
Solved - SD-ext on stock 2.2 ROM?
Just wanted to follow up on this to say that I successfully ran Revolutionary against the T-Mobile locked phone (HBOOT 0.93.0001), applied the Superuser-3.0.3-efgh.zip as linked from the Revolutionary FAQ.
Finally I made a second FAT32 partition on the SD card since the phone doesn't seem to have ext2/3/4 support built in... and now we've been using Link2SD quite successfully =)
Thanks for the pointers + help, peeps

Root...and now?!

Hello
Before i start, just like to say that I spent almost two days to read almost all posts related to my phone, but still feel I need your help.
Ok then:
I own an HTC Desire and recently asked an informatic friend to root my phone, mainly for two reasons:
- In order to install more applications, since it was always with the notification of "low memory space" and still had lots of applications to install and,
- To be able to customize, since I see many colleagues with images and icons very beautiful and I'd like to have that
After the root done, my friend installed the ROM CyanogenMod 7.0.1
I was very happy the phone came to my hands, but even before i start to install the applications i noticed that only had about 70MB free space, and then after installing some, quickly came to 30Mb, even using the App2SD. Frankly it seems to me that this program is working exactly the same way it was before the root. One part goes to the SD but another part is the internal memory. I thought with the root, the entire application would go to the SD.
I also noticed that either the cache or system applications were also in the internal memory and not in SD. So i suspect that something is lacking because something is not right.
Another question I have, and probably can be related, is that applications that came in were the Rom Manager and Superuser. However, if you open the Superuser does not appear nothing, not on the page of the application or the registration page. Do not know if it's normal.
As for the rom manager, any action that I want to do such as Install Rom from SD card, or Download Rom or Check for Rom Updates, or Partition SD Card always shows me the message "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. Install the Recovery Manager through Rom first " followed by the option Install or Cancel. Has im not an expert, i decided not to install and listen to your help first. What is wrong? what should I do?
I hope you understand me (sorry for my English but im from Portugal) and i wait you can help me.
Thanks
FDinis
1. Search for SD partition guide, a2sd/a2sd+/data2ext guide, Hboot flashing guide, recovery flashing guide, rom flashing guide (in no particular order, get them all), learn and figure out what these are. So before you take a step, you know the risk.
2. Maybe your Desire got RMD Recovery on the recovery partition after rooted. So with your finishing "1." , you should know how to get a ClockworkMod Recovery.
Bad english, hope you know what I try to tell. Learn those and you'll know how to get more ram.
Thank you, but can anyone be more especific?
The rooting process installs Superuser on your phone system partition. Superuser is the app that grants root permissions to other apps. Opening it will just show you which apps have been granted root priveledges which I am guessing are none so far.
Do not use ROM manager with the desire it will cause all kinds of problems. You should already have a custom recovery installed when it was rooted.
To get more space for apps you need to install a ROM that supports A2SD+ (not the same as Froyo A2SD) and partition your sd card. ROMs available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328 There is a guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 Follow steps 5 to 7 (you have done 1 to 4 already). There is another good (perhaps better) guide here http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/220627-faq-apps2sd-updated-17-02-11-a.html and some more general information about rooting here http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/503471-desire-all-things-root-guide.html
Alternatively you could change the phone internal partitions in conjunction with an appropriate ROM but that is more complicated.
I hope this helps.

How can i know that?!
Shut down phone, then hold vol down and press power - this will take you to bootloader screen. Navigate using vol up/down to Recovery and press power to select - this should take you into custom recovery.
Edit: do you know how your mate rooted your phone? Post the details shown on bootloader screen, and what your original hboot version and software version is if you know.

Oh dear, I'll help you move on from this forum.
You have now S-OFF'd your device, meaning you can now manipulate any data that is saved onto your nand (layman's terms: built in) memory.
If you want to do further change, such as changing the operating system on your device, you need to flash a custom recovery. There is a tutorial on my guide on how to do so. Do not ask me which one to flash, remember a recovery is a recovery is a recovery is a recovery - they ALL do the same thing, some may have different features than others.
Once you have flashed recovery backup your ROM.
There are a few different variations of Android, here are A FEW you can choose from, I just picked the first one that picked the criteria.
Sense 2.0/2.1
Sense 3.0/3.5
Stock AOSP Gingerbread
Customised AOSP Gingerbread
MIUI AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP ICS (UNSTABLE)
Once you've decided what ROM you would like to choose, read the forum thread, and find out what HBOOT you need from www.alpharev.io (make sure to check the md5 before flashing, there's a tool that does this for you in resources on my guide). And flash the hboot (tutorial on my guide).
A lot of ROMs also support A2SD. For this you need to have a EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Use Gparted to make a 1024mb EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Make sure to back it up beforehand as it will be wiped.
Put the ROM on your sd-card, boot into recovery.
In recovery do a full wipe of boot, system, data, cache and dalvik cache.
Flash the ROM you wanted to use.
reboot.
That's as much help as you'll get from anyone here.
Bortak
Thanks
I'll try to do that, but i'm affraid of doing something wrong due to my (lack of) knowledge.
Well, best way to gain some knowledge is a) to read and b) to try out different things. So please, stop complaining and just do it! Most of us learned how to do things by doing them. And that's also the reason why most newbies get some troll posts when asking things.
This post is not meant to insult you, but just to give some advice. There are very few states where your phone will be totally unusable, so just give it a try.

Looks like you haven't got a custom recovery flashed. If you are going to use ClockWorkRecovery then next time when it asks you to flash CMW recovery say Yes and follow the instructions. Personally, I prefer 4EXT recovery (you can search for it in Google play store). But you need a custom recovery on your rooted phone before you can start tinkering with it.

you're rocketing your way to 10 posts very quickly...spreading a little bad advice along the way
- you need to be s-off before you can start tinkering with recovery
- also, he has already been advised correctly not to use ROM manager at all...
1.Just install 4ext app from Google Play
2.Flash with it 4ext recovery, boot into recovery and do a backup of your current rom
4.download the customrom zip of your choice.
3.download the required hboot and flash it.
5.boot from the 4ext app into recovery do a full wipe
6. go to install zip from sd ( if needes toggle veryfication off before)
7.Reboot
8. finish
7.Have fun

If i recall correctly, the timeline i followed was
stock rom
got my self root and custom recovery (clockwork) ( unrevoked.com)
custom rom, on stock hboot
s-off, custom hboot, custom rom with more space for data (alpharev.nl)
so a custom recovery without s-off is possible

[Q] Stuck in the process of getting more space for app's

Hello XDA members
This is my first post. I've read all the rules and mantra's and watched the video. I hope someone can help me. I've read a lot of threads prior to posting, but i'm stuck. The thing is, i'm not quite sure where i am in the process of rooting my Desire and freeing up space. This is because it's a couple of month's since i began the process, and i stopped because i got stuck back then. I should have posted right away, having everything i've done fresh in memory, but i didn't. I now understand that i tried to do a lot of technical stuff before actually knowing what i was doing. Noob!
End goal: more memory
My Desire runs Gingerbread 2.3.3
This is the guide i was using: techspalace.blogspot.dk/2011/10/perm-root-htc-desire-gingerbread-233.html
My thinking was, that i needed to root to be able to run apps that i can use to install app's to SD card.
I don't think i've rooted the Desire yet.
Well today i followed the guide in the link, and i tried to get into recovery mode, but i couldn't.
When i start in boot mode, it says:

-Revolutionary
BRAAVO PVT4, SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-051D
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.23
AUG. 10 2010, 17:52:18
What to do...?
Thanks

Yes, you should. Flash this file from recovery:
http://download.chainfire.eu/315/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip
After that, follow the partitioning guide in my sig.

Then flash a recovery first. The partitioning guide also has a recovery flashing tutorial. Use either the fastboot method, or the pb99img method.

Ok, I've partitioned the SD card. (BTW, good guide you've made)
- should i continue and install Mounts2sd or CronMod? - but I need to be rooted to do this right?

Thanks.
Now i recommend you to flash the supersu zip i linked earlier, backing up all your apps with titanium backup, and installing a custom rom. A custom rom, besides probably having an integrated a2sd script, is a lot faster than the stock rom, and it doesn't have bloatware.

Ok, ive flashed supersu, i don't think i need to backup any app because i ran a fresh recovery before starting this thread - or do i? Installing a custom rom you say...does this mean it's rooted now because of supersu?
can you recommend a custom rom?
You backup your personal apps, like.. i don't know... a game with a highscore. If you don't have any, then you don't need to backup. Maybe only contacts, and sms. Check the play store apps that do that.
I recommend starting with MildWild Redux, the one i'm using now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031467
It's fast and stable, and easy to handle, plus you get low battery consumption.
If you want a sense rom, try RSK. It's fast and stable as well, and you can tweak it from the RSK settings.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431908
Steps to flash:
1. Download the rom zip, and place it on your sd-card.
2. Backup your apps and contacts (optional)
3. Boot in recovery.
4. Select the "backup" option. This is a nandoid backup. If anything goes wrong with the rom you're trying to flash, this will restore your previous rom entirely.
5. In the wipe menu, select "wipe all partitions except sd-card".
6. Install the rom.
7. Wait for it to boot (first boot up to 15 min).
8. Enjoy.

Yes, you are now rooted, as you have supersu :good: Now you can mess through your system files :silly: Or, you can follow abaaaabbbb63 reccommendations and try some custom ROMs.
Mildwild cm 8 is also good

Everything is running great.
I have installed a ton of app's - mission accomplished.

Best way to reclaim memory?

I've just bought a used HTC Desire, and after installing only 4 apps (Google Play Store, ES File Explorer, Screen Off and Lock and Swiftkey) it is reporting only 4Mb of free memory. What's the best way of reclaiming memory? Would it be a custom ROM? If so, can anyone recommend something that's very slimline and robust? I don't need the HTC bloatware (including Sense) - just Google Maps, Swiftkey and a few other apps.
The phone is currently running Android 2.2.2, Baseband version 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
Is rooting/ROMing this device pretty straightforward?
The best way is to create an ext partition on your sdcard and use a script (a2sd) to move apps and dalvik cache to the partition. Most custom roms support, or come with these types of scripts. You will also want to change your hboot (internal partition layout) to something more practical that allocates more space to the data partition and less to system and cache. Before doing this you will need to get s-off and a custom recovery. Post your bootloader details (turn phone off, then hold volume down + power to enter bootloader), and i will give you further advice on how to go about doing this.

Yep. Your hboot is compatible with revolutionary, which is a tool used to gain s-off. S-off basically gives you the power to do stuff.
Install these drivers on your PC: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
Enable USB debugging on the phone
Download revolutionary (create and make note of the beta key too): http://revolutionary.io/
Unzip the file, and run the executable. After thats done you should have s-off and a custom recovery installed.
Let me know when thats done, or if you need more help.

OK I've run revolutionary and accepted the option to flash a new recovery (clockworkmod). How I do I get to run an a2sd script?

First check to see if revolutionary was indeed successful (look for s-off in bootloader details).
Also I would suggest changing your recovery to a better one such as TWRP or 4ext. (clockwordmod that revolutionary flashes is pretty old and there are much better options for the desire).
After that you can pick a rom from the development section. The majority of them have some sort of a2sd script built in.
Then download the rom of your choice and flash using your recovery. Depending on the rom you choose, activating a2sd will differ. Some have it preactivated, while others will need you to run a few commands in terminal to turn it on.

OK it seems I now have S-Off!
Pardon my ignorance, but what's the best way of flashing TWRP recovery? Do I need to use ADB bridge?
Also, can you recommend a lightweight ROM that has a2sd built-in?
Thanks so much for your help.

Sorry forgot the links. If you want TWRP click on the Show Content button in my signature. Ive got a link there to TWRP for the desire. (instructions are in the post).
Do you want to stick with gingerbread or do you want a more recent 4+ rom?

Perfect - thanks.
A 4.* ROM would be nice, but would it leave me with less memory (and worse performance)?

Yes, they definitely wont be as fast as a pure AOSP gingerbread rom, but you have to make some compromises if you want the latest and greatest

TBH I'm more concerned about the memory footprint than the performance (although obviously the two are related). Would a 4.* ROM occupy alot more memory?
Incidentally I tried flashing a TWRP recovery zip from recovery mode, but kept getting "installation aborted". Any ideas??

By memory Im assuming you mean storage rather than RAM. With gingerbread roms the system size is smaller, meaning that you can use an hboot that shrinks down the system partition a lot, thus leaving you with much more space on data (where apps go). With 4+ you can still do this to some extent, but not system sizes arent as small as on gingerbread. To give you an idea, at some point while on a jellybean rom i had around 50 apps installed with room for probably about 5 more.
Im guessing the issue is due to the fact that your current recovery is too old. Your other option is to use fastboot to flash the image, or use the PB99IMG method (easier). Download the file from here, then follow the instructions here (use the PB99IMG that i just gave you, not the one from that thread with instructions).

Since my main problem is not being able to install the apps that I need (due to lack of storage), I guess a Gingerbread ROM would make the most sense (much as it pains me to admit it). Do you have any recommendations for a fat-free Gingerbread ROM?

Ok, makes sense. I would go with Mildwilds redux rom. Its themed to look somewhat modern, its got a very small system size and its got built in a2sd (you might not even need to use this since system is so small).
With this rom you can switch your hboot to oxygen r2. This will give you over 330mb for apps and app data (quite a lot compared to 147mb, what you currently have). If you think thats enough, then i would suggest not even using a2sd or creating a partition.
Let me know and ill give you further instructions.

I've looked at the oxygen r2 link but don't quite follow the fastboot instructions - does this require ADB installed on my PC??

Fastboot is the harder process. The easier way would be to use the PB99IMG method. On alpharev.nl download the PB99IMG_oxygenr2.zip file. Then rename it to PB99IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard (not in any folders). Turn off the phone, boot into the bootloader and wait a few seconds. It should find the file and ask to install. Press volume up for yes, then reboot once its done.

OK I now have Oxygen R2 installed and seem to have 145Mb of internal storage free :0)
The only issue I have is that the Play Store app seems to be broken - whenever I open it I get "No Connection" (as if there's no internet connectivity). I'm connected to wifi, and other apps have no problems accessing the net. I've tried rebooting, turning wifi on/off, but no luck. Any ideas??

Google Maps has the same problem - no internet connection. It's as if it's just the Google apps that can't see the internet.
???
Hmmm....the plot thickens. I decided to wipe and re-flash the ROM and Gapps, but after wiping it would not let me re-flash the MildWild ROM - the flash fails. When I boot into Android now the keyboard app seems to be broken - every few seconds I get the error "the application Android keyboard has stopped unexpectedly" (I had previously installed Swiftkey - could that have had anything to do with it?).
So now I seem to have a "broken" ROM - no keyboard and no working Gapps. Any ideas for what I might try??
