I'm looking for a gingerbread ROM with 3.0 Sense to it, and both HiApk and InsertCoin look amazing.
What are the major differences and which is recommended?

Also, I would definitely go for InsertCoin. I tried both, but HiApk was a bit laggy.

I had my desire rooted by using unrevoked few months ago. I now notice I have ClockWork 2.5 and my device is S-ON.
Correct my humble try to understand:
I need to make a nandroid backup, go S-OFF (1. by using unrevoked? alpharev?), update ClockWork to 3.2 (2. what is the difference to amon-ra?), and flash InsertCoin (3. do I have to flash a radio or does it come with one?)

S-OFF using alpharev, also i would suggest going for CM7 HBOOT if you gonna use InsertCoin, and yes you probably need CWM 3.x.x.x because its supporting new installer scripts which are required in some ROM's.
Use 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08 or 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 Radio, see which is best for you.
InsertCoin is constantly developed and the stable version is very reliable and fast.

hboot partition table
if you mean which HBOOT to use,
then you need
"Bravo Stock 1.8" for ROM InsertCoin a2sd
"Bravo CM7" for the ROM InsertCoin cm7 (hence the cm7 in the name)
The "download" files are for updating the hboot with fastboot command from your computer (you need the ADB toolkit or one the of fastboot GUI interfaces you can find in the HTC Desire development thread).
The "PB99IMG" files are for updating the hboot directly on your phone without computer. It requires to boot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode and is probably riskier than the computer method.
Anyway you need to first S-OFF with alpharev iso (which will also update the recovery to CWM-AlphaRev 2.5.1.8 with dark blue color and keep the default bravo stock 1.8 partition table) and then you can update the partition table to CM7.

Radio
InsertCoin rom does not come with radio.
You should flash the recommended radio. it is better to do it with fastboot command (or GUI tool) from a computer. And it is the only way to do it after flashing the CM7 HBOOT as the cache partition is then too small (5Mb) for allowing radio flashing from recovery.
Recovery fake flash
If you don't want to change your recovery you could try to fake flash the 3.2 recovery when you need it.
Fake flash means to load another recovery (3.2) while in recovery (2.5) by simply applying a zip file. You then have all the feature of the 3.2 recovery without permanently installing it.
1) put the zip with 3.2 recovery on your SD card (zip in thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039954)
2) boot in recovery
3) apply the zip (like you would flash a rom, but it only loads the 3.2 recovery operating system without removing/deleting any file in your phone). You should notice the text color change and a few more options in the menu.
4) enjoy
I've been doing this for all the InsertCoin GB versions (well at least 30 times so...) and never had any problem. This allows to flash zip with amend and edify scripts by selecting either the default recovery or the 3.2.
You can also use the fake flash method to run Amon-RA recovery.
Fake Flash is more or less what what Rom Manager is doing when you use it to reboot in recovery mode (but it only supports a restricted set of recovery versions that have been tuned to work with Rom Manager).
Another benefit of fake flash is that you can still use your old nandroid backups, as it it not recommended to restore with recovery X a backup made with recovery Y.
[advanced] You can also fake flash the img recovery with fastboot from your computer

I don't mean to be OT but what about IC vs Reflex? I tried both and maybe Reflex is a little faster than IC.
I prefer InsertCoin for gingerbread and Sense over other ROM. I tried both , but InsertCoin is faster and more stable.
1. Why can't I flash alpharev's Bravo CM7 .img immediately?
2. Where is alpharev's livecd .iso? Is it necessary to use it and not to fastboot flash immediately?
3. Why shouldn't I use "unrevoked forever" (1) s-off tool?
1. If s-off goes wrong, it won't change partition table's sizes

Update:
First of all, I gparted the sd-card (3.5 fat32, 512mb ext3, 32mb swap).
Then I had success doing s-off (I flashed a stock rom prior to that) using alpharev's cd, flashbooted (so easy using these tools on linux) alpharev's Bravo CM7 .img, wiped it all, flashbooted CWM 3.2 and now flashing InsertCoin v45 Nightly <3 <3
More updates soon, and ofcourse, many thanks to all of you!
Update:
It's working quite good, besides few lags and slow-downs of Sense.
Flashed a new radio as well, and right now it seems wonderful.
Kudos to alpharev, baadnwz and all you guys too!

I'm trying to flash a gingerbread rom to my desire but I always end up being stuck on the HTC logo. I tried several ROMS( opendesire, modaco with sense and without, some more too but can't remember the names,... ) The only gingerbread ROM that installs is CM7, but i have market problems that annoy the hell out of me ( can't find certain apps, need to hack to install bigger apps ). A shame because i really like CM, but i want to compare with others
Any idea why gingerbread won't flash correctly. I have tried several froyo ROMS without any issues before, by the way

Did you remember to wipe your data between each different install?
That's the most common problem when you get stuck at boot.
i use rom-manager and always create a back-up and wipe.
I also tried with an empty SD-Card and repartioned it ( with rom-manager ). The results are always the same, every gingerbread rom gets stuck. I thought there was something wrong with the partitions or maybe i need s-off for gingerbread... ?
What version of CWM do you have? Did you update manually to the new radio for the GB Roms?

I'm using Rom Manager v4.2.0.2
It is possible that i flashed that radio with a previous modaco sense/froyo ROM.
should i first flash that one you mention and then try again?

And what ROMs do you try to flash?
AFAIK, you need to flash that first in order to get booted.

all and always stuck on HTC Logo except for CM7, that one works fine except for the market issues

I found this in one of the ROM threads.
So my suggestion:
First try to update the radio to the newest (alredy posted the link).
If that does not help, then try to update your recovery.
updating radio and flashing updates did not help
i'm still stuck when trying to install oxygen
I could use some help in updating my recovery. I f i do this with rom manager 2.5.0.7 is the most recent.
I seems there's a 2.5.1.2 out and 3.x.x.x is not advised. Is there an update zip somewhere to use?
People report that Insertcoin S v22 can be installed with 2.5.0.7
Make sure you do a full wipe in THE RECOVERY, not ROM Manager or any program.
Too boot into recovery hold down Power+Vol Down while phone is off.
There:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Wipe cahce
3. Under advanced menu > Wipe dalvik-cache
Also make sure your SD card is partitioned right.
And for the update - you can only update your recovery if you are S-OFF or you use Unrevoked3 with a custom recovery image.
Grab a copy of Ubuntu and check that the apps2sd partition on your card is formatted correctly. I tried all ways of formatting and partitioning (via clockwork/rom manager) and it never formatted correctly and always caused HTC boot sticking.
If I completely reformatted SD and reflashed an older rom (like Leedroid 2.3) would then boot fine. I then used Rom Manager to repartition & format SD, boot ubuntu (live CD is enough - no install required) then reformatted partition to EXT4, flashed and worked fine.
Also, is 2.5.0.7 your TRUE recovery version? Turn your phone on with vol-down held then select recovery - does the version change to an older one? If this is the case you may need to re-root is (Unrevoked) to update your recovery version permanantly.

If you are S-off you can flash newest recovery using fastboot, this flash would be permanent!

i agree with TMSsecret,
the gingerbread ROMs i have used seem to need a more recent version of HBOOT. First time I tried to flash LeeDroid 3.0.2, it didnt work. Applied S-OFF (which updates your HBOOT during the process) and tried again, worked no worries. Also, if you're keen to install the latest ROMs, upgrade to clockworkmod recovery 3.x... It took me a few tries to get FASTBOOT working properly (possibly because my version of windows XP has had too long to decompose), but if you persevere, it will work.
The best way to make sure your ROM will work is a thorough research session. Not slagging you at all, just pointing out the obvious. Look up everything to do with your intended ROM and read the threads.
I have tried to flash InsertCoin A2SD v39. After successful allign 1gb ext3, wipe and succesfully flash the rom, then rebooted. It got stuck at HTC splash screen for more than half hour. Tried to wipe and reflash again, still the same.
So, the questions are;
1. Is latest radio required? I have 5.11.05.27 with PVT4 S-ON
2. Is Amon-RA ver 2.0.1 required? I have RA-Desire 2.0.0
3. Is it required to flash 1.0.5 stable before flashing nightly?
I wanted to try this ROM....currently I have Redux 1.2.

Ok...perhaps i can try with amon-ra 2.0.1. But S-Off...I try to avoid that. Too many things to do.. i have to flash with non a2sd rom, than alpharev.

Answers for you questions:
1. Yes, it is required to avoid all radio related problems (call dropping, compass, mms etc) and possible bootloops. However, it may work with your radio, too.
2. No, amon-ra is not required. You can use CWM, too - but newer version required (at least 2.5.1.8 - I'm using 3.0.0.5).
3. No, you needn't to flash stable before the nightlies.

ok davebugyi...i definitely have bootloop because the flash was indeed succesful. But upon reboot...it never get pass the HTC splash screen.
I have PVT-4, so no CWM for me...that is why i have amon-ra 2.0.0.
now that v40 is out, and clearly say that it is recommended with latest radio, I suppose we can assume that it is the radio.
Only way to find out is to try it out...If I'm brave enough.
So this is the plan. Full wipe --> Flash ROM --> Flash Radio.
Sounds alright. Btw, CWM 3x is working with PVT4 devices AFAIK. But don't change it since you have AmonRa.

After flashing latest insertcoin rom I always get stuck at wallpaper, booting goes fine but then a wallpaper with notification bar shows and I can't do anything.. After a while a screen turns off and I can turn it on again but that's all
I have tried flashing Oxygen ROM and everything works fine but I really want to try Insertcoin one.

Did you make an extended partition ? Do you have custom hboot or stock ?
original HBOOT so I have downloaded A2SD+ version (not CM7) and I have not yet created and extended partition, going to do it now in Oxygen, hope that helps

You have to have and ext partition.

1) you must be S-OFF to change your hboot (go to alpharev.nl)
2) you dont flash .img files through recovery, it is done through fastboot mode, and you must have ANDROID SDK set up on your pc to use adb/fastboot commands with windows cmd prompt (or try android flasher, but i strongly recommend you do it yourself, less software means less probability something will go wrong)
3) CM7 version will be faster (apps will run from NAND) and also you will get lots of space for them so this is recommended, yes (note that you cant restore a nandroid of stock hboot rom etc, after changing hboot you must flash a CM7 rom

I did it manually. http://alpharev.nl/ Android flasher works as well but by the time I would've had finished downloading the operation was done.
Yes, it is worth flashing.
S-OFF and then:
1) Nandroid backup in recovery.
2) Verify the MD5SUM of the file you downloaded against the one in the table.
3) Flash HBOOT with your phone in fastboot mode (Back+POWER) -> 'fastboot flash hboot bravo_alphaspl.img' (change into the correct filename for the HBOOT you downloaded)
4) 'fastboot reboot-bootloader'
5) 'fastboot erase cache'
6) Boot recovery, wipe everything and restore.

Hi guys, I had this problem as well.
I've done the partition okay, my problem is this:
Clean install (after wiping dalvik, cache etc) stuck on wall paper.
however when i revert to my stock nand backup and don't wipe any data and try to install, it works fine (except it messes up the people app so I can't add anymore friends).
Some knowledgable insight would be appeciated as I am loosing some good friends.

Would love to flash a new rom as im on a leedroid rom and would like to flash this: MildWild V-3.0.
He mentions that i need the cm7r2 hboot.

You don't NEED the cm7r2 hboot. The ROM will flash fine on stock hboot. cm7r2 will give you more space for apps though.
There are many variations on rooting/S-OFF/recovery installing/ flashing these days. For every person who chooses to reply here, you will probably get a different set of recommendations. The following is my personal recommendation:
1) Download the ROM.
2) Save to SD card.
S-OFF:
3) S-OFF your phone using alpharev
4) Flash cm7r2 hboot via fastboot if required
Install a New Recovery:
5) Download 4ext Recovery Updater from the market (free)
6) Run the app
7) From the app, install 4ext Touch Recovery 1.0.0.3 RC3
Backup:
8) Boot into recovery and nandroid backup your current ROM
9) Boot into android on current ROM
9a) Backup all apps with MyBackup Root if required
10) Copy your entire SD card contents to pc in case of screw-ups later (or new partitions)
Partition:
Do you have an ext3 or ext 4 partition on your SD card (between 500MB &1GB)?
If yes, go to (13), otherwise:
11) Format SD card (from recovery) with 500-1000 MB ext 4 partition, the remainder FAT 32
12) Copy SD card contents back to card from PC (with card reader)
Wipe & Flash:
13) Boot back into recovery (Power up while Volume-down button held in, then select Recovery with volume-down followed by power button)
14) Full wipe of phone (Format all partitions except SD card)
15) Flash ROM
16) Boot into Android
17) Restore apps if required
Radio:
18) Flash of newer radio recommended. The one in my sig is popular (not the very latest, but reportedly better battery life than the newer .23 version). You can't flash the zip if you have cm7r2 as the /cache/ partition is to small - you will need to flash the .img via fastboot. Alternatively you could flash the radio.zip after stage (5) and before stage (9).
EDIT (17 Feb): S-OFF is required before using 4ext recovery. Above sequence of events edited to reflect this.

I see in the OP that you are S-ON if you want to flash a different recovery you have to be S-OFF.....

You flash them during rooting via unrevoked? Which will unlock nand to flash recovery

I have an issue with my Desire bravo. I can't install Evervolv's KK 4.4.
A year ago I used unrevoked3 to root my phone. It installed CWM 2.5.0.7. I had tried many 4.2.2 ROMs and than decided to stick with MildWild.
Now I want to try KK4.4 but I simply can't install it. CWM always writes: Status 0. Installation arborted.
I tried to update CWM through ROM manager but it won't update it. It writes that current version is 5.0.2.0, however when I boot into Recovery I can see that I have the same CWM.
Can somebody help me please?

I tried to flash it without success. Than I went to Hboot and it wrote that I had S-ON (that's strange). So I used Revolutionary to S-OFF my phone. It flashed CWM 4.0.1.4 and waw - everything works!

Lastly, uninstall ROM manager, it's bad for Desire. You don't need it.
As long as you only use CWM to install / wipe you'll be ok, do not use it to partition your sd card.
4EXT is generally a better recovery, and is also recommended for partitioning, you can install it using the 4EXT app or flash it through fastboot commands.
Now that you're S-OFF it's much more powerful (e.g. you can change hboot). You were wasting a lot of memory while S-ON with stock hboot and mildwild.

What's the advantage of using custom hboots? I think that Evervolv's roms can be flashed only on stock hboot.
I have flashed Evervolv's nightly KK4.4. It seems to work OK (but I liked Jelly Bean's interface more).

custom hboots simply allow for more space, one of the primary reasons for gaining s-off and rooting in the first place
a custom hboot generally has a smaller /system and /cache and therefore more /data (internal memory)
depending on which mildwild rom, you only filled 100 to 130MB of the 250MB /system partition on stock hboot, which wastes max ~150MB. You could have used cm7r2 hboot or similar to nearly double the /data partition and hence more space for apps.
You're right though, now beside the point for ROMs like Evervolv which require stock hboot....
