Quite often my phone will switch to 1x while driving through the city. I set "Settings > Wireless and network > Roaming > Roaming mode" to Sprint Only in hopes that it would enforce 3G but it still occasionally jumps to 1x:

Toggle the airplane mode and viola, 3G is back:
I got a cell phone amplifier with a cradle so why does it still switch to 1x even if I'm literally standing right under the cell tower? How do you force 3G-only? I'd rather get no signal than 1x, which will be nearly impossible inside the city with my setup
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: "Sprint Only" setting is for roaming only. To force 3G set "##DEBUG# > enter MSL > Others > HDR/1X Selection" to "EVDO only"... this will force 3G but also will stop SMS from being sent/received. seems like SMS are being sent over 1xRTT regardless what radio you're on.
According to your signature, you have a gsm galaxy s2?
If not, what modem are you running? I noticed lately that my phone would drop to 1x and not go back to 3g (I'm running the EL29 modem) . I got pissed and flashed the EL26 and it's behaving itself for now. 1x isn't necessarily roaming, that's, for a lack of a better term, 2g.

I always run same modem version as the kernel, EL29. Guess I'll give EL26 another shot
ps: CDMA SGS2, aka Sprint's Epic 4G Touch... thus me posting in this forum
1x doesn't only happen when roaming, so roaming settings won't help it

Whats weird about your problem is that I had the same issue at work constantly switching back and forth from 1x to 3g. Then my screen on that phone got cracked, got a new one through insurance. This new phone never goes to 1x at work, always on 3g. Also running blazer ROM that lets you know if your on 1x or 3g. So it led me to conclude no phone is built the same, and this phone must have a stronger signal somehow.

That's what I thought too. From my experience setting it to Sprint Only actually did stop the phone from dropping to 1x so that led me to believe that they really were related.
There ya go
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Just showing 1x does not indicate roaming, just means your phone is not connected to 3G bot to the slower 1xrtt Sprint network (for lack of a better word, 2G).
Showing 1x with a little triangle on the signal meter "indicates" roaming.
Sprint uses 1x for SMS(& secondary data), so if you want forced 3G only(there is a dialer menu that you can go to select that), you will not receive your SMS's, so just an FYI. But the reason you see 1x so often is because the radio on the Epic 4G Touch is crap, I've never seen a radio that has this many issues, random switching to 1x, data throughput issues, connection issues, etc(But then again, I've only had 1 Samsung before and it was for only 2 months)
^
said dialer menu is ##DEBUG# > enter MSL > Others > HDR/1X Selection
set to EVDO only mode.
I would leave it on automatic. Flash PRL 11115. You've tried updating data profile? you havent messed with roam control by any chance have you? if you id say maybe open the app and make sure you have it set to automatic in there as well. other than than.. perhaps theres been a bad flash along the way.. maybe do a lil odin reflashing back to stock and start fresh?

yeah, last night i completely reflashed everything, ever went as far as formatting both internal and external sdcard. everything is now pretty much brand spankin new havent tried updating the data profile nor the prl. I'll flash 11115 / update profile and see how far that takes me. i'll give roam control a shot while at it as well.
thanks all for the feedback. agree with calkulin that this phone is mindblowing horrible when it comes to radios. even my old Touch Pro got better signal and better data... but then again, back then nobody used data for anything so sprint's data network was like a ghost town
I've been using 1115 and roam control for the past two weeks. This almost always means verizon in my area. I get better call reception but little, if any, improvement in data.

Not all areas get 3g roaming on 11115 ..... flash 00001 for a little and check your 3g speed then ..

I'm looking for an answer to this too.
Why does this phone behave like this? I remember using other phones and they have no problem saving your selection (WCDMA preferred).

No, they are completely different which you will see by reading up on the topic or going into the testing menu. Samsung didn't write the Android radio standards. AUTO PRL uses predefined/downloaded lists to determine which signal is better, 2G or 3G. WCDMA Preferred fights to keep you on 3G which is helpful when you are in a borderline area and trying to use data.

IF that was true our phones would spend 100% of their time on 2G because the GSM network is /always/ stronger than the 4G network. That's baloney.
I said Samsung has their own network management software. It breaks the Network Information menu drop down

No. "WCDMA preferred" will pick up 3G/4G network as long as 3G/4G network signal is above a certain threshold. And the 3G signal threshold that "WCDMA preferred" can live with is lower than "GSM auto" can live with. Meaning, if the 3G signal is lower than certain amount, if you are on "GSM auto" it will automatically switch to 2G, but if you are on "WCDMA preferred" it will struggle to stay on 3G forcefully.

But the other part of what you said is plausible. What app/setting are you showing in the screenshots?

That's complete bull****. I've sat and watched my phone sit on a no bar 4G signal plenty of times and it does so every time I leave my house until it fades out completely and picks up 2G/EDGE again. I've also had HTC phones, whenever I changed it from WCDMA Preferred there was no change in handover. It behaved exactly the same. It stayed on 4G until the signal was too weak and switched over to 2G/GSM/EDGE

It's Service Mode, *#*#197328640#*#*
So I noticed in downtown Milwaukee that I was stuck on 1x, but had full bars (on the sprint network). For fun I did a speed test, and was floored... 70KB (yes, bytes, not bits) down, 45KB up. I will upload a screenshot later when I can get to a PC.
I thought our phones wouldn't be able to take advantage of the upgraded data capacity of 1x?

The network icon in the status bar indicated 1x... I didn't believe it, so I checked Netmonitor (confirmed) and also did SpeedTest... See the screenshot of the details of the test.
Either funky things are happening with 1x, or my radio is reporting the wrong connection type. Although I know they are upgrading the 1x network somehow to accommodate the extra traffic Direct Connect is bringing... But as far as I know, the theoretical max of 1x is about 18KB.

With those ping times I can almost guarantee you are not on 1xRTT. Your data rates are even beyond the revised 1xRTT rates.
I am surprised they put the 1x notification back. Previous releases always said 3G regardless of whether you are on 1x or EVDO (on multiple sprint high-end phones)
What does ##DEBUG# say about your data connection?
When it asks for your lock code enter 777468 (SPRINT) (the equivalent #s from a phone dial pad)
BTW what is that 3rd notification icon (from the left) signifying?
Next time out drops to 1x, I'll check out debug and post here.
I'm running Calk's last gingerbread ROM. He has the 1x / 3g fix baked in. Until the last two weeks, I never noticed high speeds when it indicated 1x, but of course it's possible something on the code is reading the state wrong.
That third icon is the standard Android notification letting Mr know there is an open wifi signal.

Mine works fine on lte. Reboot into cdma/lte and then if it doesn't work again, go to dialer, hit ##3282# and hit edit. Enter your msl and navigate to others>hdr/1x selection> and try switching it around a few times. I usually go into airplane mode then make my selection and then come out of airplane mode. This may or may not help. If it doesn't, you might have a defective phone and I'd take it back.

The setting hack under the ##3282# menu is a way to force the phone into LTE-only mode to bypass the automatic threshold settings and connect to any LTE signal no matter how weak. But that disconnects your 1X voice/text service.
This hack should not be needed at all after the phone has received the LG8 OTA update, which fixed the threshold logic. (Version LG2 was automatically downshifting to 3G from LTE at way too high a signal strength threshold, so it was very hard to get and keep an LTE connection)

I have this phone unlocked and use it with Straight Talk.
I used it with a TMobile Sim and it all seemed to work fine (as expected)
I bought an AT&T Sim because I wanted to give it a try due to better AT&T Coverage.
Now the problem that I have is that the data is VERY inconsistent and unusable at times, even when it shows 3G and full signal bars.
Sometimes it will pull up web sites, sometimes it won't.
I can run a speed test and get 6mbit then a minute later it won't even pull up Facebook.
Any ideas as to why this is?
Could it be that even though this phone is compatible with AT&T bands that it just doesn't work well?
I used Straight Talks recommended AT&T APN settings which included a proxy, but with that I kept getting something about Proxy Authentication failed, so I read that I can remove the proxy settings, I did, and now data works but very up / down / on / off even though I have great signal and 3G icon is on.
Anyone using this phone with AT&T? Any issues?

I am also using my T989(rooted,unlocked) with Straight Talk (AT&T). At the beginning, the data connection is good and that's why I switched from T-Mobile. Now, I got the exact same issue, the signal is very strong and shows "H" on the icon bar, but just cannot connect to internet. I didn't use much 3G data this month( about few hundred MB), so I don't think Straight Talk has blocked data.
I tried Tweakker for ICS Beta, but could not automatically configure the APN for my phone (ROM: AOKP Jelly Bean Build 1). I manually configured the APN per the instruction. Now I can do a Speed Test, but just cannot connect to internet - Chrome says invalid proxy. ...
Can anybody help? If I still cannot make it work, I might have to change it back to T-mobile although I really don't T-mobile.
I get excellent coverage and data with tmobile monthly 4G but it depends on your area, im using uvle radio with jedi mind trick v7

I have Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S 2 T989 and just transfered to Straight Talk with a micro sim card put into a sim adapter to use on my cell phone ... however, I tried everything to get the data working but no luck at all .... it just shows bar for the signal with no data.
Calling and texting working fine.
What do you think guys? is it because the micro sim or what?
Anyone else running a Tmobile Note 3 on the AT&T network? Is there any difference in reception or LTE? I've seen in other threads people complain that they dropped calls and had less reception with the Tmobile hardware on ATT, I'd be curious to see DB measurements and not simply rely on the reception bars. Also heard complaints that the Tmobile N3 doesn't hand onto ATT LTE signals well.
Also using the Tmobile Note 3 on the ATT network does;
1) does tethering still work?
2) does it work with an AT&T microcell?

My wife and I both use straight talk which runs off of AT&T towers and when I'm at the house I have full bars and my speed was 20 if I remember correctly, at work I get 3-4 bars but never any reception problems. Hope this helps a Lil bit.
I'm running my N900T on AT&T with CM 11 and have noticed that my phone randomly drops back to Edge and even G sometimes. It has completely lost data access occasionally too. I put my phone in airplane mode and it goes back to full LTE, but that's bothering me. I don't know how to fix it.

You can download Advanced Signal Status. Then go to additional info then device info and you can change the network mode to LTE only to force it to reconnect to LTE always.

I tested the app here, and although it says my LTE signal is at 100%, my data connection is being disabled every time I make a call. I tried changing the preferred network type to LTE only in the phone info menu and calls drop as soon as I hit the call button on the dialer. Also, in the phone info menu, the option to enable/disable data shows only as "enable" during a call, which means data is disabled, and clicking it does nothing. As soon as I hang up, my data connection restarts and goes to 2G. I don't know if this is a problem with CM 11, so I'll try a Touchwiz ROM in a minute. Any other suggestions?

No problems at all with touchwiz. Probably a CM11 problem.
