Anyone figured out how to get around the annoying Samsung issue where wcdma preferred doesn't stick from the testing menu?

I leave my phone in WCDMA because when it is set to auto with my Wifi does not work. If ur settings arent working try a reboot, rom reboot, reset phone data, or reflash the stock rom

Relevance to wcdma preferred?
BUmp..........
wanna know too! this is a good battery saver! GSM auto is slow and having to switch between 2-3g to 4g
I'm looking for an answer to this too.
Why does this phone behave like this? I remember using other phones and they have no problem saving your selection (WCDMA preferred).

GSM/WCDMA Auto IS WCDMA PREFERRED
Samsung has it's own network management and that's why Android's menu is locked out.

No, they are completely different which you will see by reading up on the topic or going into the testing menu. Samsung didn't write the Android radio standards. AUTO PRL uses predefined/downloaded lists to determine which signal is better, 2G or 3G. WCDMA Preferred fights to keep you on 3G which is helpful when you are in a borderline area and trying to use data.

IF that was true our phones would spend 100% of their time on 2G because the GSM network is /always/ stronger than the 4G network. That's baloney.
I said Samsung has their own network management software. It breaks the Network Information menu drop down

No. "WCDMA preferred" will pick up 3G/4G network as long as 3G/4G network signal is above a certain threshold. And the 3G signal threshold that "WCDMA preferred" can live with is lower than "GSM auto" can live with. Meaning, if the 3G signal is lower than certain amount, if you are on "GSM auto" it will automatically switch to 2G, but if you are on "WCDMA preferred" it will struggle to stay on 3G forcefully.

But the other part of what you said is plausible. What app/setting are you showing in the screenshots?

That's complete bull****. I've sat and watched my phone sit on a no bar 4G signal plenty of times and it does so every time I leave my house until it fades out completely and picks up 2G/EDGE again. I've also had HTC phones, whenever I changed it from WCDMA Preferred there was no change in handover. It behaved exactly the same. It stayed on 4G until the signal was too weak and switched over to 2G/GSM/EDGE

Anyone know of any widget that will quickly switch between 2g and 3g networks?
Most of the time I leave it on 2g to save battery but when i need to use the internet to browse or search I have to go into the settings and switch it to 3g to surf the net then when i've finished switch back to 2g to save the battery again.
would be much more simple if there was a widget like the bluetooth, gps, wifi one that could quickly and easily be toggled.
There's a few on the marketplace - take a look at this one:
http://curvefish.com/widgets/2g3g-onoff.htm
There is one widget in the market called 2g/3g, you can find it by just searching for '2g' or '3g'. This widget sends you to the correct settings page, but you still have to change the band yourself.
This is the way it has to work in Android. I guess the api does not allow access to the setting directly from applications .
thanks just tried it.
Didn't work exactly how I wanted. opening the widget takes you to the network menu in settings and from there you still need to change it to 2g or 3g.....still quicker than my old way.
thanks
Yes, like I said there is no other way at the moment. Hope to see it in the future, loved that toggle on my HTC Touch HD.
what u can do is put widgets from settings on your home screen which allow you do easily switch from 2g to 3g, switch wi-fi and bluetooth on/off. See my screen below.

I think that the mobile switch you've shown turns off mobile internet, so rather than 2g or 3g it switches internet on or off.

edge in an incement within 2G, 2.5. Going back to the first post, what babyshaq wants, as i understand is just use GSM singal. This is what the widget does. Edge does not add anything to your calls.
No, as stated before:
- He wants to switch from 3G to 2G through a widget (not possible)
- The widget you are suggesting turns off the mobile network
no it doesnt. it turns off 3g. trust me
Ok man whatever you want. When I flip that switch my mobile network connection is disabled, if I'm on the 3G or 2G band.
If you want to make things up, fine with me, enjoy yourself.
Sorry jaykayslo, you are simply wrong.
That widget turns of mobile data. It has nothing to do with switching between 2G and 3G whatsoever.
turn that widget off and go to the mobile network settings.
you'll see that the connect to the internet box has been unticked.
turn the widget on, and the box is ticked.
babyshaq, that widget on the market that takes you to the settings page is as close as you can get. It's not ideal, i grant you, but it's the best you can do.
Oh, and btw, GSM, GPRS and EDGE are ALL considered 2G technologies!
no biggie. i use it switch mobile data to save battery. Plain GSM is enought for calls. Don`t see the point in switching to gprs or edge, because data transfer is so small its not worth it.
Yea thanks guys. I understand its either a shortcut to the settings or completely turn it off.
I guess we'll have to wait it out and hopefully it will be developed in the future
You wrong, it turn off the mobile internet connection ... completely.

yes we have established that. Semantically there is nothing wrong with my statement. It turns of 3G doesn`t it? But it doesn`t switch to 2G, which is what was sought after.

I noticed on this graph that the LTE radio never shows up on it though.
Today, I turned off the wi-fi and using only LTE for the last 3+ hours streaming tunes
WTF!!1one
i can assure everyone there is no debate.
If you run (from a root prompt):
# adb logcat
then look carefully, you will see that even with Wifi active, the phone is accessing the LTE network for updates and transmitting data to the network, therefore using 2x the battery usage. the best way to use only Wifi is to use Airplane mode then turn on your Wifi ONLY. this assures you of a near 100% Wifi only usage.
Only then can you produce accurate results for battery usage regarding LTE vs Wifi
there must be some confusion, allow me to restate my original post.
I am curious why the LTE radio's battery usage does not show up on the graphs I posted while the wi-fi does.
7.5 hours on battery, 6 of those hours streaming music via LTE, + a bit of browserin- battery @ 38%
Probably because it would be so huge, all others graphs would be a pixel wide....
because the 4G LTE radio usage is not tracked by an app, it is a system service. wifi is tracked because it has a separate app that controls the Wifi radio. the only way to shut off the cellular modem is by using airplane mode. make sense??

yes, I am familiar with airplane mode, thank you, it does make sense.
Interesting that LTE is not considered a system service/left out while such things as android OS, cell standby and phone idle are displayed in the graph.
@[email protected]: dude, you have a clarity of thought none of us have.
I swear, we really need to somehow disable LTE on this phone and just run on either HSPA+ or 3G when we don't need LTE. I've always know that while it's not being used, it's still searching and updating constantly, and actually using up much more battery in the process.
i will see what i can come up with for disabling LTE.
EDIT: Found a way, but i will NOT accept credit for this method. the author is unknown, but whoever you are, thanks a bunch!!
1. Tap the Phone app.
2. Dial *#*#4636#*#*
3. The hidden test menus will appear. Select the Phone information menu.
4. Scroll down to the Set preferred network type menu and set it to CDMA auto (PRL).
5. Tap the Home button and you’re done.
The setting will go into effect immediately and the phone will stop searching for an LTE signal.
If you find one day that your town has LTE service or if you travel to a major city that does, you can perform steps 1 to 3 again and set the setting back to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto.

Did you test this? Because it DOESN'T work for me on my Nitro. It brings me to the test menus and I can choose Phone Information...But there's no option to choose network type.
EDIT: Just tried again and this time I pressed the menu softkey and it brought up a sub-menu and there's a choice for 'Select radio band'. But every time I click it I get a Force Close. :-(
Same force close when I attempt to pick radio band menu item.
I like my LTE so it'll stay but I was just this morning messing around trying to find out the sequence to open that hidden menu, thanks for that!
If you're using Launcher Pro, or any app that allows you to create a shortcut to system activities, you can create a shortcut to the Test menu:
With Launcher Pro:
1. At the Home screen, press the menu softkey, select Add
2. Choose Shortcuts > Activities > Settings > Testing (com.android.settings.TestingSettings)

Quite often my phone will switch to 1x while driving through the city. I set "Settings > Wireless and network > Roaming > Roaming mode" to Sprint Only in hopes that it would enforce 3G but it still occasionally jumps to 1x:

Toggle the airplane mode and viola, 3G is back:
I got a cell phone amplifier with a cradle so why does it still switch to 1x even if I'm literally standing right under the cell tower? How do you force 3G-only? I'd rather get no signal than 1x, which will be nearly impossible inside the city with my setup
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: "Sprint Only" setting is for roaming only. To force 3G set "##DEBUG# > enter MSL > Others > HDR/1X Selection" to "EVDO only"... this will force 3G but also will stop SMS from being sent/received. seems like SMS are being sent over 1xRTT regardless what radio you're on.
According to your signature, you have a gsm galaxy s2?
If not, what modem are you running? I noticed lately that my phone would drop to 1x and not go back to 3g (I'm running the EL29 modem) . I got pissed and flashed the EL26 and it's behaving itself for now. 1x isn't necessarily roaming, that's, for a lack of a better term, 2g.

Whats weird about your problem is that I had the same issue at work constantly switching back and forth from 1x to 3g. Then my screen on that phone got cracked, got a new one through insurance. This new phone never goes to 1x at work, always on 3g. Also running blazer ROM that lets you know if your on 1x or 3g. So it led me to conclude no phone is built the same, and this phone must have a stronger signal somehow.

That's what I thought too. From my experience setting it to Sprint Only actually did stop the phone from dropping to 1x so that led me to believe that they really were related.

Just showing 1x does not indicate roaming, just means your phone is not connected to 3G bot to the slower 1xrtt Sprint network (for lack of a better word, 2G).
Showing 1x with a little triangle on the signal meter "indicates" roaming.
Sprint uses 1x for SMS(& secondary data), so if you want forced 3G only(there is a dialer menu that you can go to select that), you will not receive your SMS's, so just an FYI. But the reason you see 1x so often is because the radio on the Epic 4G Touch is crap, I've never seen a radio that has this many issues, random switching to 1x, data throughput issues, connection issues, etc(But then again, I've only had 1 Samsung before and it was for only 2 months)
^
said dialer menu is ##DEBUG# > enter MSL > Others > HDR/1X Selection

yeah, last night i completely reflashed everything, ever went as far as formatting both internal and external sdcard. everything is now pretty much brand spankin new havent tried updating the data profile nor the prl. I'll flash 11115 / update profile and see how far that takes me. i'll give roam control a shot while at it as well.
thanks all for the feedback. agree with calkulin that this phone is mindblowing horrible when it comes to radios. even my old Touch Pro got better signal and better data... but then again, back then nobody used data for anything so sprint's data network was like a ghost town
I've been using 1115 and roam control for the past two weeks. This almost always means verizon in my area. I get better call reception but little, if any, improvement in data.

Anyone else running a Tmobile Note 3 on the AT&T network? Is there any difference in reception or LTE? I've seen in other threads people complain that they dropped calls and had less reception with the Tmobile hardware on ATT, I'd be curious to see DB measurements and not simply rely on the reception bars. Also heard complaints that the Tmobile N3 doesn't hand onto ATT LTE signals well.
Also using the Tmobile Note 3 on the ATT network does;
1) does tethering still work?
2) does it work with an AT&T microcell?

You can download Advanced Signal Status. Then go to additional info then device info and you can change the network mode to LTE only to force it to reconnect to LTE always.

I tested the app here, and although it says my LTE signal is at 100%, my data connection is being disabled every time I make a call. I tried changing the preferred network type to LTE only in the phone info menu and calls drop as soon as I hit the call button on the dialer. Also, in the phone info menu, the option to enable/disable data shows only as "enable" during a call, which means data is disabled, and clicking it does nothing. As soon as I hang up, my data connection restarts and goes to 2G. I don't know if this is a problem with CM 11, so I'll try a Touchwiz ROM in a minute. Any other suggestions?

4G does not work. It show 4g/4g+ and max reception in status bar but when i try and run speedtest it fluktuates from 2-5 bars and flip between 4g/4g+. Speedtest failes after 30 sec or so.
Same sim card and same location gives me 110/mbps (yes!) on a Samsung s6 so its not the network or the sim-card.

100% official 1.80.401.3 ..... says so in the first lines. So my guess would definitely be NO custom rom !
There have been many threads and complains about wifi and 4g reception. My wifi works fine (not the best, but its decent). However, 4g reception is pretty bad. Mainly in indoor places, 4g shows no bars. I guess the problem also lies in the phone not automatically switching to 3g when 4g is bad. Sometimes i get no signal when there is actually 3g service. If I force the phone to 2g/3g only i get full bars. It's probably a firmware/radio issue that will be fixed in the next update hopefully. Chek the threads about weak wifi and weak lte for updates

FYI: reception is 100%, ie full bar. Same sim card in a phone laying 10 cm away gives me top 4g+ speeds.
Installed 1.80.401.1 firmware and 4g works as it should (ICE rom)
Ever since the 1.80 line of software came the phone has felt slow at bootup and generaly not as fluid as on on 1.30. For instance, the animation on initial setup (rotating planet etc where you pick language) runs 100% smooth on 1.30 but on 1.80 and later, its lagging and stuttering.
it's quite weard if you ask me, why would a later software version run worse?
after a bit of investigating I can notice that the problem is the phone keeps switching cel tower.
It changes every second - it goes to close one with 4g+ and 5 bars, to another with 2 bars and 4g and up and down.
If i go to dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#* and then go to phone information and under "location" it says "CID = somenumbers". the numbers after CID are the cell tower.
It changes all the time. Phone never sticks to one.
Same sim card in a SGS6 or N5X gives me 100+ mbps 4g+ speed in the same location, but the HTC 10 is unable to stick to one tower and just keeps switching.
If i force 3G it will stay on one tower.

Exactly whats happening to me. Sometimes I also lose signal completely and phone will not downgrade to 3g. If i force it to 3g only, no problems at all. I hope its firmware related. I know someone who escalated the problem to htc and waiting for a response. I also notices that due to this problem my clock is sometimes off, as i have selected "use network provided time" under time settings.

S-OFF, LOCKED
Running 100% offical 1.80.401.3
4G does not work. It show 4g/4g+ and max reception in status bar but when i try and run speedtest it fluktuates from 2-5 bars and flip between 4g/4g+. Speedtest failes after 30 sec or so.
Same sim card and same location gives me 110/mbps (yes!) on a Samsung s6 so its not the network or the sim-card.
this is after a full factory reset.
any tips?

Tip would be,as you're S-OFF downgrade firmware back to 1.80.401.1
Running 1.80.401.3 as well. Can't confirm this problem on my end. So I'd not be sure if it got anything to do with the latest firmware.

It seems the issue has to do with somr network operators. I travelled back to my home country and the only problem I faced was a weaker LTE signal but no drops in signal at all. But now where I am located i get both weak lte and drops in signal.

I've had the same issue on 1.80.401.3 running Viper10 rom, network will always connect to HSPA,just downgraded firmware to 1.80.401.1 and it connects to 4G straight away
If i go inside (*#*#4636#*#*) menu and force LTE, it shows as connected to LTE/LTE+. But when i look inside the program, it see it change CID every second - it is constantly is doing this every second, sometimes it stay long enough for a speed test to start but it will generaly fail
This is only on some locations and esp where there is lte+, at my apartment with regular LTE it works just as good as any other device i have tested with. But at work i get 100+ mbps with a S6 or N5X, but the HTC refuse to get a solid fix on a tower - it keeps switching.
UPDATE: I installed the latest firmware (from maximus), 1.90.401.3. New radio or something fixed my problems with 4g!
Now i connect to 4g and 4g+ like it should and gives me around 100mbps download speeds, like on other devices.
