[Q] Rooting Desire Z 2.3.3 - G2 and Desire Z Android Development

Hello everyone,
I have a Desire Z on T-Mobile UK that I have had for nearly a year. I have recently been looking into all the different ROMs and customizations, particularly something to clear off apps that are built into the phone and lowering the CPU usage.
This is my first Android phone and after looking at some of the rooting guides I find myself completely lost on what to do. So I guess what I am asking is what is the EASIEST, SIMPLEST method of rooting the phone, without using any kind of one click app that will brick my phone.
By the way I am playing the 'damsel in distress' card so be nice to me

Check out the second sticky in this forum. Afaik there is no "easy" method to root the DZ. Now that HTC has unlocked the bootloader, probably the easiest way would be to unlock via htcdev.com and afterwards to gain root via a one click tool. I think they are available for DZ as well, just look them up
sent from my dz

I'd stay away from HTCDEV unlocking methods.
Instead, you should go ahead and ask at the Q&A subforum. You are going to receive a lot more help than what you're going to get here.

Yeah there is no real easy method, if its something you want to do then the number one priority thing to do is 'read' and read some more, you need to familarise yourself with expressions and terms which you dont know, you need to understand the difference between s-off s-on and unlocking, read the stickies in this thread, not just once but a few times. the steps are simple, its a case of knowing what youre doing and if you have read the stickes then you should have a general idea what to do..
yes this doesnt answer your question but i cant root youre phone for you, i can only give advice

yeah stay away from htcdev method as some users are having trouble flashing certain roms as it uses a different hboot

This guide would be your best bet

Wrong section. You were supposed to post OP in General Questions Section.
Go to here, this is the best rooting program ever (sets S-OFF, root, sim-unlock, etc.). But, if you're on Gingerbread, you need downgrade your device's OS. Also, don't flash ENG HBOOT through it until you're pretty sure what you're doing.

Help with rooting

Can someone walk me through for the steps of successfully rooting my desire z ?
Thanks

There are so many easy places to find this information here if you just look around. Specifically the Android Development sub forum.
Cyanogenmod wiki for rooting the HTC Desire Z
The XDA wiki for rooting the HTC Vision/Desire Z
Also make sure you do not use the Visionary to do root as it has a high brick risk and don't install Clockworkmod version 5 as that has issues. Stick with Clockworkmod 3.0.2.4.
Another thing ... I suggest before you root your device, you read through a lot of the forum threads for your device so you have a better understanding of what your doing. I apologize if I'm treating you with kid gloves, but your question makes me wonder.
That guide is for 1.72 firmware though I am running on 2.42.666.8. How would I go about downgrading it?
EDIT: Also, what can you do with a rooted phone, I know you can do a lot just not the specifics.
Check the Development forum, there is a guide there for downgrading gingerbread OTA's
-Nipqer
I used this guide to downgrade my ROM.

I was unaware you're phone had a later firmware on it. Yes, as you said, "can do a lot" with a rooted phone. For example you can install a custom kernel and overclock it to speed up the phone. You can install the latest version of Android on it so you know it's always up to date. I can't really think of anymore off the top of my head, but there you go. Rooting pretty much keeps your options open with your phone I guess.

Help for a friend, in need of rooting tutorials

A friend of mine has a wildfire S and is sick of the constant lack of memory messages so he's considering rooting his device. I'm looking for every tutorial you need to root the phone as well as how to "s-off" for one tutorial in the dev section that didn't have this, that's why I'm asking so I can get him started.
Can anyone help me out with this please? I'm assuming its not possible to follow the standard HTC Wildfire rooting guides.
Thanks,
Dave

Look at the general section, there is a index thread
Swyped from my desire s running damn sweet ice cream
I note that in most of them you need an XTC clip, is there an easy way around this? the ones that don't use it are CDMA models, without any more info on the phone in question I can't understand much more myself, so which method of rooting have you guys used?
Rooting tutorial is in a stick in this forum...
Yes you need an XTC-Clip to S-OFF the phone for permanent root.
GSM - XTC Clip
CDMW - Software S-Off
The end!!!
Sorry but you are just another spamer who does not wat to read...
Please stop opening such threads, first searcu for it...

Unfortunately not yet, if you got no cdma version (without Sim slot) you need an xtc-clip to gain s-off.
You can get one at e-bay or go to a second hand seller that also does repairs, I unlocked my gf wfs at one of those shops for €20, but I can't guaranty that all of them got one.

In what world am I just another spammer? I'm simply looking for some help on these forms on a phone I have no experience with before I go off and tell my mate to do something incorrectly. If it bothers you that much don't read the thread. As much as people like me bother people like Tectas, they still help even if it pisses them off which I thank them for.
Tectas, thanks for that, if you don't get the s-off can you still root the phone or what happens then? I recall not getting s-off on my sisters desire and managed to root it using superoneclick. The only thing was lots of ROMs wouldn't work.

[Q] Excited to get a DINC2.....questions about a lot of things.

Hey guys. I'm going to order my DINC2 tomorrow because I'm due for an upgrade. I've been reading a LOT around these forums. There is a TON of information and I love it, but the thing is, there's too much to the point where I don't know if everything is up to date, etc. My main goal with my DINC2 will just to be to flash a ROM based on CM7 that is currently on these forums. The thing is, there is a way to do this that looks sort of outdated. It is the method that involves downgrading hboot, then doing all the other misc stuff that is shown in a guide. I came across a tool that unlocks the bootloader from htcdev (not sure if I am allowed to reference this. sorry in advance if this violates rules).
The thing is, there is all this talk of S-off/S-on, perm root, etc. and it's overwhelming for me because I have never owned a smartphone before, much less an Android smartphone. What would be the most up to date method to flash the CM7 ROM onto the DINC2? The Unlock Bootloader method seems like it would be much simpler....but I'm not sure what capabilities the unlocked bootloader would give me.
Hi, welcome. You should root with revolutionary. Plain and simple. Bootloader unlock makes you have to do an extra step whenever you flash a ROM. I would go to revolutionary.io and use their method. It is actually very easy. If you HTC unlock, you can use my guide on what to do next in my signature.
Thank you for directing me to that link. I've been wondering for awhile if anyone had a super concise guide on how to do EVERYTHING.....really good guide!
But as stated before, the ideal way is to downgrade and s-off. No extra steps involved when flashing a new ROM or anything.

[Q] AAHK wont work?

You can still S-OFF your phone.
After a while, the script might (if needed) try to download a PD98IMG file. When it gives an error simply google for the filename (might be PD98IMG-GB2 for example) and place it in the PD98IMG directory AAHK created. Everything should go well. I S-OFF'd my Desire yesterday.

Sorry KirovAir, but if the people you are advising to use the Hack Kit get stuck due to not following instructions or some other issue, will you support that? Because let me remember you that the Hack Kit is no longer supported nor here or in the IRC channel. Don't you think that what you are advising is dangerous and might leave quite a few fellas with their phones in a blank screen?

Thanks for the information!
I had also read about 'Easy Ace Root Tool' in dev forum. But I have a question regarding that.
- It says that only Custom ROMs can be installed, not Ported ROMs. What is meant by 'ported ROMs'? Will I not be able to install, say Sabsa prime or Venom's ROM(which are ported from One S and Desire X), if I unlock bootloader using Easy Ace root tool?
Also, does it support flashing 4ext recovery?
could you please tell me at least which version of aahk you used? already found in the web PD98IMG-GB2 and i am willing to do the proccess... already red many forums about rooting my desire hd. but since you did that proccess already i think you can give some reliable tips even if this topic is unsupported here. i know that discussing about aahk is unwelcome in the xda forum and i am sorry for this but i think you would agree that its the way with the most chances of success. or anyway could you suggest me any another way to follow?
thank you for yoour time

Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash any recovery that is for the device (DHD / Inspire 4G), Custom roms built from source (CM) and modified sense roms work great. Ported roms I am not sure, but you can try it out. In the worst case scenario, you might get stuck in the splash screen and you will have to flash a different one.

No, Hack Kit is no longer supported anywhere. If you are willing to do it, you are on your own and will have to find information about it somehwere else. There are other ways to root or S-OFF the device that are supported here. So, please let the Hack Kit rest in peace.

You don't need S-OFF to root. You can just run this and you will be just fine. You don't have to be a programmer to root your phone, just do a little reading and searching will suffice.

[Q] Fix for "Test device" in HTC Tell? Relocking bootloader?

Hi folks,
I have a HTC One M8 that is registered with HTCDev and also S-Off (courtesy of the awesome sunshine tool). In the settings app, I have a red text telling me this is now a test device and all my data are belong to HTC. (As someone posted here months ago.)
I am not sure if I want to cripple the Udove.apk because I'm concerned about the next OTA update. Is there a way to "unregister" with HTC or more technically, relock the bootloader without loosing S-Off? Is there a way to determine I have a stock hboot if I'm not sure if I messed with it in the process?
Thanks for reading
This really is just a follow-on of your other thread, so I don't know why you started a new one.
The phone will come up as a test device since its s-off. Relocking the bootloader won't change that, nor will it effect s-off.
Try to freeze the app with Titanium. Or remove it now, and revert to the stock ROM when its OTA time.

I did not mean to offend anyone, I was just thinking my question in this thread differed from the previous one and might not be found by the right people under the other title.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had so far been unable to figure out if this test device thing was connected to s-off, bootloader or both of them.

I could try Titanium, yes. Since my motivation to go all over several app setups is decreasing, I will avoid flashing as best as I can.

No worries, I was not offended. But you posed similar or related questions in your other thread, so IMO its redundant to start a new thread and ask them again.
Its pretty typical for additional questions to pop up during your thread as the issue evolves and the discussion progresses. But IMO no need to create new threads as that happens.
I have HTC M8 and I want to run custom rom but have this red text.. now I am s-off and rooted, so I can delete system apps.. which apps no I need to remove so it won't sent anything to the HTC?
Thank you very much for answers...
