Hey guys. I'm going to order my DINC2 tomorrow because I'm due for an upgrade. I've been reading a LOT around these forums. There is a TON of information and I love it, but the thing is, there's too much to the point where I don't know if everything is up to date, etc. My main goal with my DINC2 will just to be to flash a ROM based on CM7 that is currently on these forums. The thing is, there is a way to do this that looks sort of outdated. It is the method that involves downgrading hboot, then doing all the other misc stuff that is shown in a guide. I came across a tool that unlocks the bootloader from htcdev (not sure if I am allowed to reference this. sorry in advance if this violates rules).
The thing is, there is all this talk of S-off/S-on, perm root, etc. and it's overwhelming for me because I have never owned a smartphone before, much less an Android smartphone. What would be the most up to date method to flash the CM7 ROM onto the DINC2? The Unlock Bootloader method seems like it would be much simpler....but I'm not sure what capabilities the unlocked bootloader would give me.
Hi, welcome. You should root with revolutionary. Plain and simple. Bootloader unlock makes you have to do an extra step whenever you flash a ROM. I would go to revolutionary.io and use their method. It is actually very easy. If you HTC unlock, you can use my guide on what to do next in my signature.
Thank you for directing me to that link. I've been wondering for awhile if anyone had a super concise guide on how to do EVERYTHING.....really good guide!
But as stated before, the ideal way is to downgrade and s-off. No extra steps involved when flashing a new ROM or anything.

S-off and revolutionary is the way to go. Nat3mills on YouTube has some vids that walk you through the process. It is really not that bad.

Hi,
Verizon is pushing out OTA updates to install Android 2.3. I'd like to downgrade to Android 2.2, and prevent the OTA from happening in the future. Is there a way to do this?
Cheers
Only if u are s off already.

Sorry, but currently there isn't a way. (with the exception of the xtc clip).
Hopefully alpharevx/unrevoked will get temp root on GB and allow s-off.
No. But you can do some searches and find out.
Please read/search before posting. Thank you.

I, too, was unfortunate enough to receive the Gingerbread OTA update with no confirmation or anything. The funny thing is that I clicked cancel after it downloaded it, which did nothing. What's even more funny is that this is replacing a previous Droid Incredible 2 which already had S-OFF and CM7.
For anyone trying to downgrade to Froyo using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033922 -- it doesn't work, so forget about wasting your time.
i dont know if you've read this thread already http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990 but apparently it works, too bad im sorta new to this so i dunno how to do it myself xD if any1 is down to make a video or slide tutorial of how to follow these steps i am sure it would save the world for us inc2 unrooted users who want to root
it works, but its via adb only. Afterwards, using Revolutionary you can get s-off. The instructions are for downgrading to get s-off. Basically reverting back to .97 bootloader.

It does work, I used this method to downgrade today, i was able to gain s-off and flash cyanogenmod after. It isn't the easiest method for novices though. But the instructions are pretty clear. I had problems running the automated script included (i was in debian linux, so i cant speak for the windows script). However when I executed the commands in the script manually, everything worked . I would imagine that someone will package this method up nicely before too long...
Thanks

I just got my DZ back from HTC, and unfortunately they upgraded my firmware to 2.3. I took a look on the instructions on downgrading 2.3 to 1.xx, and it looks quite complicated and risky.
I know that HTC has released unlocking tool for DZ and I wonder if it is safer to use that. Anyone tried it before?
General opinion is that HTC's unlock tool is rubbish because (a) it is very restrictive and doesn 't really unlock properly, and (b) it officially voids your warranty.
The procedure in the Wiki is quite safe if you follow it properly. Read it carefully and come back and ask questions, before you try it, if there's anything you are not clear on. There are plenty of people here who can help you.

The thing is, that if you unlocked your boot loaders via htcdev, you will be able to get perm root and custom rom, BUT you will still have s-on. So apps like rom manager or boot manager won't work properly.
I recommend the wiki way too.

I think you should use the wiki's instruction. It's actually a lot easier.
I had the same thought as you, tried HTC's unlocking method and could never get it done. Then I tried the wiki's instruction, downgraded, rooted and installed ICS all in about an hour.
Disclaimer: I am a noob, this is the second time I root a phone (first time was my SGS S a year ago).

+1 to all of this.
HTC Unlock does not give you S-Off, does not give you root, and you can only flash from ADB. Just do the Wiki method, and get real control of your phone.
I think you shouldn't use the htc tool....not the greatest result but lost your garanty!

Using the HTC tool is like sending a registered letter to HTC declaring you just voided your warranty. Stick to the wiki, IMHO!
Thanks guys. I decided to follow the wiki and got it successfully unlocked again! Got a custom rom back on!
Its warranty is not an issue to me as it is already expired

You did right with the wiki. If for any reason something went horribly wrong with a flash and you still had S-On bootloader, such as via htcdev unlock, you could have been screeeewed. S-Off makes your phone virtually bomb-proof, seriously it takes effort hard bricking a G2/DZ that's S-Off

It is a shame to say that I still use Android 2.2 with Kernel 2.6.32.21, Taiwan version since I bought the phone a year ago.
(Not until recently, I have decided to move on to Gingerbread because
I wanna use the the latest features in the NDK to write some C++ programs for Android.)
Without getting into trouble during/after rooting,
I tried an official OTA upgrade but it doesn't work.
I tried to ask HTC but they said they still don't have any official upgrade for my phone.
I am a newbie here in this forum,
Could anybody please kindly offer your help please?
It will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I wanna make my App!!!

If there is no official Gingerbread for your phone (which seems odd ?) then you can flash a different official GB ROM onto your phone. But normally your phone isn't going to let you do this, because it will fail the signature checks.
What you need to do is to de-brand your phone so that it doesn't do these checks any more. I will see if I can dig out a link to a guide and edit it into my post, unless someone else beats me to it.

Steviewevie,
Thank you for your help in advance!
I can't copy and paste the link right now, but use the Search function in the Android Dev forum to find the thread called "Debranding Bell Desire Z" (it doesn't only apply to Bell phones).

Thank you for the help!
I have found that thread!
BTW, after a quick look of the thread, it seems that S-off is recommended...
Do I need to get "root" in order to do so?
Should I do that to prevent future trouble?
Always recomend rooting phones right away, if you have a custom recovery and an enginering bootloader you can save tons of headaches in the future when problems arise (as they often do) this of course is outside the fact that a rooted phone is a happy phone and certainly not an apple

As demkantor said, getting S-OFF is a lot better because it gives you a lot more options for the future, even if you don't use those options straight away.
IMHO the only reason to use the goldcard method and not full S-OFF is if you are really worried about voiding your warranty or the S-OFF process yourself. But there's no need to worry really, since (a) you can easily reverse the process if you need to, and (b) lots of people here can help you through getting S-OFF (the XDA Wiki explains it very well, though it can look daunting at first).

+1 to the notion of just rooting the phone. Especially since if are software developer, I would think that you would want full control over your device. And if you have these type of skill, rooting will be easy.
As mentioned, root, S-Off etc. can be removed for warranty purposes, if that is the concern.
The Wiki method is generally accepted as the safest:

demkantor and all,
Thanks!!! ok, I am least I will go for S-OFF!
But, I need to be able to fully recover my OS and Apps,
I need to do some research on stock recovery and/or custom recovery...
Well, I think there is an official update to Gingerbread thou.. But I think dont think that version is in English as it is a Hongkong version.
I'm one of MANY people who replaced their DX2 for a fantastic DINC2
I was tired of Motorola's ****ty phones.
So mine will be here wednesday.
I've already downloaded the CyanSense ROM, Capacitive button fixes, Touch Recovery Control, S-OFF kit, etc.
As you can see I'm ready ^_^
I have been in the HTC family, before the DX2 I had an EVO 4G, DINC1, and a Droid Eris.
I am proud to be joining you guys and looking forward to posting with you all.
When I get it you shall know due to me posting on the threads I have downloaded from with results, thank yous, bugs, blah blah blah
So is there anything I should know?
Will I have to downgrade before S-Off'ing?
Will I have to flash a new radio?
Let me know guys
I did a LITTLE porting as far as themes and stuff so I'm a little experienced. Not so much of a noob besides me being new to THIS phone. Butchea I'm VERY friendly so don't be a stranger? Alright?

This may be worth looking into: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659256
Hope you can unlock that bad boy!
Well if you cant downgrade and get s-off you can at least go to htcdev and unlock the boot loader so you can flash custome roms.
Welcome to the crew. Please note that su > killall drmserver kill fix any market issues by typing the previous code in TERMINAL EMULATOR. Also, if you want GSM use stock. Welcome to the family
Yes welcome. Rather small community imo. Downgrading isn't too bad a task, from there revolutionary has the s-off tool that you can also opt to flash cwm recovery directly after. Many sense 3.0/3.5 roms, miui gb and ics asop, akop, cm7/9 are all available.
Out of all the roms I have flashed, my personal favorite were TSM Pool Party. Enjoy!

Ah fresh meat, lmao. Welcome though. Always nice to see someone with experience show up.
Can someone point me to a downgrading tutorial? And I think once I'm downgraded and rooted, I'm going to flash my ROM and stuff. Enjoy Sense and ICS, then if I feel like somethings missing I'll work on some more ideas, ports, etc And are there any ICS ROMS with BOTH cameras working?

As far as I know, there are 3 ways to unlock the bootloader on the DInc 2.
1. Using Revolutionary's S-OFF method found here: http://revolutionary.io/ This is the recommended method but the downside is it supports only hboot (bootloader) 0.97. If you have hboot 0.98, there's a method to downgrade the hboot to 0.97 for use with Revolutionary S-OFF. There's a tutorial in the Droid Incredible 2 Android Development forum. Here's the tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990. I don't know about hboots higher than 0.98 but I'm guessing they can't be unlocked with this method.
2. Using XTC Clip, a hardware unlocker for HTC phones. It supports newer hboots too 'cause I unlocked my 1.02 hboot with it. The downside is it's not free and can be hard to get a hold of.
3. Using HTC's method available here: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader. It only unlocks some partitions so that you can install custom roms. You can't flash bootloaders and radios 'cause they are not unlocked.
Unlocking using HTC's official method voids all warranty and XTC also probably voids warranty too but Revolutionary's method lets you go back to stock everything so you still have your warranty. XTC-Clip and HTC's methods permanently unlock the bootloader while Revolutionary's unlock may become locked again if you flash another hboot. (I'm not sure about this one so those who have used it, please clarify it for me.)
So, there you have it. Three different ways to unlock your bootloader. You may now pick your poison
Next weekend, I am going to get an HTC One M8 from T-Mobile. I would really like to change it to a GPE but I need to get a phone through T-Mobile so they will pay off my ETF from Verizon.
I would have liked to ask this question directly in the development thread, but I'm not allowed to so I will just include a link.
I have found a couple videos to help me with this online and it seems pretty simple. I've been running a rooted GNex with Shiny Custom Rom. Although I started using the Wugfresh toolkit, I've since learned fairly basic ways of using ADB. I say all this so you know I'm not really a green beginner. My question is this:
[RUU] M8 Google Edition Conversion. 4.4.4 - RUU Zip Non-Rooted & Pre-Rooted
If I use this thread and the directions here, along with a few videos, will this work on a T-Mobile version. I'm going to be new at this GSM thing and want to make sure that this RUU file will work. Thanks!
Hi and welcome to xda!
This guide you linked in your post will work on your T-Mobile device, as long as you S-Off it as a first step. To do this I would personally use SunShine. Even though it costs 25$, it's the best you could do, as it unlocks the bootloader without any data loss and without HTC knowing (as they would if you're going to use HTCDev to accomplish it). In addition you don't need to be rooted, as SunShine temproots to get the job done. Thus you could flash a custom recovery right after S-Off, backup your full stock ROM (just in case you got to go bak to stock Sense for warranty purposes) and head to the guide behind your link.
I wouldn't use any videos, as there is realy everything mentioned in the guide mentioned, that you need to convert. As long as you follow it step by step you'll also come to learn the most important things of what you do. This will make live easier if you got to go back. And if something goes wrong during the conversion process, you would be able to give a much more precise information about where and what. I'm just writing it, as many questions here seem to start with a "I followed a video guide and something went wrong", which realy doesn't help anybody to understand where the problem first occured, not to mentioned that we can't help anybody who starts a post in this way, without further questioning what he did and in which order. And as you're telling you're already familiar with adb/fastboot the job should be quiet easy for you to accomplish .
Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. I know my username has switched but I was originally having trouble with it.
So I'm curious about the sunshine thing. I pay $25 and then run the app. The app will unlock the bootloader and give me s-off which will enable me to convert to a gpe htc one m8?

Yes that's right. It will accomplish both, bootloader unlock, as well as S-Off. After this you could goon and start the conversion by following the guide I linked in my last response.
