Hi all,
Im an experienced WM developer and switching to Android as a user,
I Got I9003 and working very fine with me, my device is Arabic enabled,
I have flashed my mobile more than 10 times( using I9003JPKE1_OJPKC2_JXKA4 and Odin) because of trying to get Vanilla Unlock and the nice theme here

The Titanium free version hasn't mega-useful Batch operations. So if you have many apps to backup, it'll be incredible long story to backup them one-by-one on free version. So, get Full version, or try MyBackup Pro app, or use a nandroid backup using ClockWorkMod. Btw, CWM isn't a replacement for lockscreen, it's recovery mode mod allowing to do some useful operations (such as backup, wipe caches e.g. etc.)
Or you can use Google and get the full version, i'm not sure if i can give you any link, so i wont, but if you know how to use google you can find it without a problem

#2 question...download ROM manager and select flash clockwork recovery, then it should give you an option to choose your device. Download CWMod for your phone. You should now have latest clockwork.

Ans: I think Titanium Backup will do the work most. Recommend that only restore APK without data as you may face force close in some apps. Beware that it does not backup APN setting. Please use APN Back&Restore in case APN is total wipe out. U can use CWM backup through recovery mode and restore. Beware sometime CWM can get corrupted and data restore will have some force close after reboot

Ans: Glass lock has nothing to do with CWM. It is the laucher bug issue. Sometime is best to install 2 or more laucher in your rom. Just flash another laucher through ODIN will work.

Ans: Feedback the bug you are having to the theme developer. They should know how to fix it. Is thier duty to provide solution.
4. what else i should know
Ans: You may find that not all products suite you and not all product developed is perfect. Keep flashing for the right one, learn from mistake, pick-up the error and google your problem for solution. Standby your spare phone in case your phone is totally knock down and cannot be restart.

As a very good FREE backup tool I'm using My Backup Root (from the market). You need to have your phone rooted but it works very nice.
Thanks a lot guys, you helped me well, I mentioned the CWM because to install the update.zip which requires CWM to install because of the signature, I flashed the CWM several times with different versions but same results on startup I really like the Ultimate-Bule-tripin with the vanilla lock and i'll sell the phone if i couldnt get it

1) Did you meet the requirement??
Requirements:
-XXKB3 FW
-Deodexed framework is mandatory
2) Have you try install zip from sd card with CWM recovery? CWM provide install zip from sd card, you can explore where have you save the file and execute it. You does not need to rename the file to update.zip.
the problem is i cant install the CWM to my device, every time i install it via odin the device does not start and then i have to flash it, how can i find a version compatible with my device firmware ver?

Please provide the link to flash CWM for your I9003. I need to look at it.
Update: CWM only work for I9000, there are developer trying to get CWM working on the I9003 device.
I guess whithin 2-3 week time, CWM should be available for your device.

You are having the latest ASIAN Froyo Firmware. Your device should be compatible.

CWM does not work for your device for now. To solve your problem, try to download Root Explorer Pro version from market (Need to buy). Then you can copy the downloaded theme file into your system.
By the way, i'm from SGS I9000 device. Not from I9003. There might be some different to replace file directory.

Thanks man, i got it done, i have deodexed my I9003 from this Thread
and then managed to copy the vanilla lock apks via ADB shell, now i can use my Android
So ive been doing a lot of reading on rooting phones and the best way to go about doing this, but I still have a few questions about the whole process. First IM going to briefly write what I understand about the process and have it corrected and then ask my questions.
To root:

Basically I will make sure all drivers are updated on my computer (samsung and USB)
Use command prompt to unlock the boot loader and then install superboot for the GN
after this process is done and I reboot the phone I will be unlocked and ready to go
Modding

1. I will download the mod that I want and place it in my phones internal memory.
2. boot into recovery mode with CWM
3. backup the phone with CWM (can anyone tell me where the back up is saved)
4. factory reset the phone
5. install zip from SD card (which will be the mod)
6. reboot back into recovery mode and install Gapps that I downloaded from the cryogen mod wiki through the "install zip from SD card" option. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version
7. Reboot phone and i will be good to go

3. How do I uninstall a mod and go back to stock
4. How do I handle OTA updates? I know that with mods, I cant download the OTA automatically. I would guess i would have to uninstall the mod, download and install the update, and then thats where I dont know what to do
5. Is there a way to back up all my apps so when I install a mod or update a mod I can just have them all reinstalled back in and have all the settings restored, without having to download each individual app and change their settings back to what they were previously?
these are all the questions that come to mind presently. Some may arise later.

You have it correct. Use titanium backup to save all your app data. And you have to restore a nand backup if you want to undo a mod you flashed. The mod usually instructs you to backup right before flashing, so you can just revert right back if you want.
I wouldn't worry about ota anymore. Being rooted always leads to you being able to flash the latest ota quicker than if you were stock and waiting for your number to be called. Trust me after years of this that's how it always happens.

There are some things that don't make sense in what you are doing.
1) Yes, you install the correct drivers;
2) Yes, you unlock your bootloader; however, if you want to save any data, it would be better if you root first (before unlocking your bootloader) -- see link in my sig, backup apps/etc. and even do a full backup. Don't forget to copy all of that OFF your device, as unlocking wipes even /sdcard.
3) If you are going to install a custom ROM, then there is no need to root the stock ROM you currently have, only to overwrite it with a custom ROM. Doesn't make sense.
4) If you are installing a custom ROM, you cannot "update" it to 4.0.4, unless the dev releases a 4.0.4 update for that particular ROM.
5) If you are sticking with the stock ROM, look at the link in my sig for either how to update to 4.0.4, or, better yet since you are unlocking your bootloader (which will wipe all your data anyway), flash the full 4.0.4 ROM.
6) OTA updates are only for stock ROMs.

What's the difference between a stock rom and a custom rom? I was looking at milestone 4. What is an example of a stock rom because I would prefer that to be able to still do ota updates.

If you are asking that question, more reading is likely in order before you start flashing things.
But anyway: a stock ROM is the ROM Google puts out. They are found here, and instructions on how to flash are in my signature. All other ROMs are custom ROMs.

I ended up reading more which lead to me unlocking and installing 4.0.4
Im happy with this now and I dont feel the need to custom mod. I need my phone to be functional all the time with out being too time consuming =D thanks for the help and leading me to my conclusion
I would seriously give aokp a try, I promise its worth it. Its the same as stock there's no extra work needed or anything to worry about or deal with. Its that good.
Id say stick with stock. I tried all the custom roms and while customisation options are good, nothing better than knowing your phone is 100 percent stable and secure with a locked bootloader.

I wouldn't recommend re-locking your bootloader if you have unlocked it. Actually, I would recommend that, every time you buy a Nexus device, the first thing you should do is unlock the bootloader. Don't forget, having an unlocked bootloader does not mean you are not "stock". An unlocked bootloader doesn't affect anything (aside from what I mentioned below).
Why you ask? Good question:
Advantages of a locked bootloader
If you lose your device, no one can easily access your data, but only if, in addition to your bootloader being locked, you have the stock recovery installed AND you have USB Debugging disabled AND you have a password on your device. However, this "risk" (if you can call it that) can be mitigated by many apps that can remotely wipe your device.
Disadvantages of a locked bootloader
You cannot use fastboot commands, so you cannot flash or boot images, which can save your butt in certain occasions.
You cannot try out new radios (assuming no root).
You cannot backup your data (i.e., make an image of your device's memory (assuming no root).
You cannot root (on 4.0.4 and later).
You cannot manually update to the latest version of Android once Google starts rolling it out. You have to wait until Google decides it's your turn, which could be minutes to months after the update becomes available.
+1 to working without me thinking. I'm leaving the boot loader unlocked to install any updates Verizon doesn't push through but other than that its staying stock. Plus I really like vanilla ICS AS IT IS

hello, i just got my first android phone so I'm new to this sort of stuff, though I love being able to unlock hidden potential of different devices, so naturally I discovered the ability to root smart phones and all that good stuff.
The model I have is the Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M. It's running 2.3.4. Gingerbread version.
I've been reading a lot of guides and for the most part rooting and adding additional utilities like flash, etc. seems pretty simple. However, I have not yet been able to find out how to create a back of up of my stock firmware when I bought the phone in case I end up bricking it, or decide I want to return to stock.
I've read many guides that claim to show how to create back ups and recovery points, but I'm still having trouble understanding it.
To be more specific, I would like to create as opposed to download, a back up of the phone in it's current state which is, as I said earlier, stock. I did a factory reset since I had some stuff installed while I was fiddling with it for the first time.

Then install clockworkmod recovery: warning: DON'T EVER USE ROM MANAGER TO INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD ON YOUR GIO, IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!! use one of the recoveries found in xda, you will also find guides to install them there.
Then third; backup in clockworkmod using "backup and restore"

so first of all, what I'm looking for is called a ROM right?
what I don't get though is how come I need to modify the device before creating the backup. Isn't the phone modified at that point? Or is the stock configuration being stored somewhere on the phone that I can't see without clockwork?
You cannot create a backup without the recovery mod CWM Clockwork Recovery Mod. But to install this you need your device rooted (modified so you can modify and view system files)

1 - you don't need to search for a rom to backup your stock rom
2 - you need to root your phone in order to be able to backup your rom
3 - you need to install a more advanced recovery (program "similar" to pc BIOS) in order to do a nandroid backup
4 - after you flash that more advanced recovery (aka CWM -> ClockWorkMod), you backup your rom in "backup and restore" menu, backup. It will then store your rom in a folder.
5 - you should strongly consider after that, to install a custom rom made by many of the devs here on XDA in order to have a better experience with your phone...

I've already uploaded a stock ROM backup last fall of the same Gingerbread ROM you're running, along with instructions on how to make one yourself or flash mine.
The best advice I can give you is: research, research, and more research.

I use px-cwm-v2.zip recovery.
You flash it using stock recovery.

Also, whats a good rom to consider upgrading to? Something that has the ability to play flash videos.

If I understand correctly, roms are basically whole operating systems that have been customized by the developer. So a rom can be already rooted and have clockwork as well as other custom stuff, and I just need to flash it. The alternative to this is to do everything manualy... root the current OS, add clockwork and whatever else. Correct?
Also, I'm not sure yet if a rooted phone has any extra options on it's own, or if it's only a set up that's sole purpose is to allow other applications to be installed who then will give the user better control over his device.

I've got Odin and the tar downloaded, but when I go into download mode with my phone and connect it to the PC, it says that the device driver was not successfuly installed, and I get no confirmation in Odin that a connection has been made between the phone and the program.
What am I missing?

Nevermind, I needed to install Kies. Don't even need to run it. Apparently it has the driver that's needed.
Okay, I've rooted my phone successfully. Now the next step is to install Clockwork and create a back up.
Now that I understand a little bit the way Odin and flashing ROM works, I think it would be better to just download a stock ROM and in case something goes wrong, I can just flash it the way I flashed the rooted one.
(I think I saw a completely stock ROM somewhere for my model but I don't remember where. A link would be appreciated if it exists.)
Correct me if I'm wrong pls.
Also, if I do that, then is there any reason to install Clockwork since I've read that many ppl have issues with installing it and it's riskier than rooting or installing other software.
Right now I think what I'm most interested in is installing Adobe Flash Player 11 or something of the sort that can play flash videos and streams.

how outdated is this cwm?
I'm using Opera as my browser so from what I've learned, flash doesn't work with it period. Is skyfire a good alternative?
Also, like I said, I don't think I need the clockwork if I can get a clean stock ROM that I can just flash if something goes wrong. As I don't intend to download many apps or add many phone numbers (memorized instead), a backup isn't really needed.

Clockwork is not riskier than other things you do. Just follow steps and you see no problems.

its an older version, its 5.0.2.7, theres also 5.0.2.8 but these give some problems after installing/wiping, so some people still use the older version.

I'm new here. I have the same problem as anonxlg. It says can't mount system. I also used the version from the big thread for new users. Can anyone enlighten me on what to do? I've been searching the forum and google, but can't make it work. I feel like a compleet noob now, and I don't feel special about it.

Edit: I kept searching, and finally found a working 5.0.2.7 version. First I had another 5.0.2.7 version, but when I tried to install it didn't work. I finally found "signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip (Flash from Recovery)" on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650 (through google actually. I have to get used to this site), and I'm making my backup now.

i used the cwm linked and backup worked, i tried installing cm9 beta8 (galaxyics), and it would get stuck after samsung bootscreen (it flashes a white pick or soemthing before full back screen)
i tried restoring backup i made, and it didnt work, some mount error again
i reverted back to 5.0.2.6 and did the restore backup again, and this time it goes up the the galaxy gio gt5660m screen and just stop..
note that i do not know what the rfs/ext4 is for for the gio if that is what is causing problems

i have a stock rooted and bloated xplay (not much time to fiddle) w/c i bought a year ago.. so i was thinking of changing roms and i plan on using the phone for gaming.. i have read some thread about pros/cons of custom and stock-based. others say that the stock rom is still the best for gaming (debloated of course).. so my question is..
should i go for a custom rom..? or stick with stock..?
if i'll stick with stock.., what's the best baseband(?) ..? currently mine's on .42...
what are the apps w/c are safe to delete..?
as for overclocking.., what is the best kernel that you'd recommend..?

but some cons have given me second thoughts.. like wifi issues and unsupported touchpads (other roms).. that's why i'm asking about stocks..

I think you should stick with the stock. This is the most.stable & supports full touchpad.
Custom roms are not as stable as stock...
I think you can just use v6 supercharger or supremacy script to make your rom fast...
[ you have to do it manually with smanager]

First of all, you have to give MORE info about the phone: locked/unlocked bootloader, phone model.....
I advice you to get a stock-based rom, instead of sticking with the stock one, because those are inproved with some tweaks that cannot be flashed on your current stock, and have built-in apps and are already debloated.
If this is your first rom flash, just follow this steps:
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, get the stock firmware that fits your region and stock android version if you want to go back from here or anywhere else
- root with any method, I recommend SuperOneClick
- install ClockWorkMod via RecoverX
- install TitaniumBackup from the market, and backup all user apps you want have in your new rom (be careful, some roms and kernels doesn't go well with backup restoration. Check the rom's thread for backup issues)
- reboot into CWM recovery and do a nandroid backup. It will save everything and you can restore your phone to its initial state, to the point you can not tell if it has had any changes
- flash the rom following the instructions given by rom builder
- flash any addons you want after rebooting at least one time, every addon separately (1 reboot after every addon)
- if you want better performance, get supercharger v6 or supremacy script as said before
Now, the stock firmware you got at first is to repair your phone if a nandroid backup restore doesn't do it.
If youwant to go back to stock, just restore the nandroid backup. If you want to take it to the carrier to fix it for whaterever reason, you also have to unroot and delete any app that uses root permissions, like TitaniumBackup. Then, when you see your Play is exactly as it was before doing anything of this, you can take it there safely
And finally, the best baseband is -36 cause it has the more balanced stats between signal reception on gsm/wifi and battery consumption, but some roms use -64. If you're adviced to flash a stock firmware before the custom rom flashing process, thats for installing the needed baseband and some other components. Happy flashing!!!!

All custom kernels support overclock and all are good at it. Just flash the kernel according to your rom cook's advice
And if you were wondering, custom roms doesn't have any problems/bugs if they are finished. You should expect bugs if there is only the first or second release of that rom, but if it's finished you'll be fine by following the steps exactly as directed.
You can try The JokaWild ROM 'S.B .69 Tweaked ROM' FINAL (v3) and DiXperia 2 'Everlasting' | Performance. Stability. Experience. if you want a stable, fast rom. Those have given me good results, but if you want to know which is the best rom you have to try them all cause they don't run exactly they same on all phones, even if it's the same model. Maybe NXT or Aurora rom could be better for you....

RecoverX is the easiest way to get CWM. Think about it as a quick 3-step process that you will do only one time. You don't lose anything
Additionally, I don't know what process are you talking about, since flashing a clockworkmod.img, installing the CWM app from the market and RecoverX have permanent effects all of them. The only exception is when you change kernel and it has a built-in recovery, you get the kernel's recovery instead of the original one. I recommend RecoverX because it supports the widest range of phone models and firmwares (I have an r800a, but it was not listed as a supported device in the CWM app, so...)
And again, it's always better to have a custom stock-based rom than just the 4.0.2.A.0.62 stock one

fastboot boot boot.img (with a cwrecovery boot) appears to get you straight into cwrecovery without installing anything, as opposed to fastboot flash boot boot.img

So, have you had a happy flashing? I hope so.....
About the addons you don't have to reflash everyting to install them, just flash one by one, separated by a reboot (you can reboot directly into CWM instead of loading to homescreen everytime, that woluld take ages to flash all of them ).
If you were wondering about root, it's not necesary to flash the root addon since doomkernel is already prerooted, so you get superuser since the first boot with it
I have had a pretty happy flashing, in that nothing went horribly wrong
I do think I more or less know what I'm doing now. Heh heh.
As you can see from my sig I am now running lupus v6 and it's been very stable, smooth, etc. And I added the cifs and ntfs modules. I didn't reboot between everything which is probably why I had to load the wifi modules over again, so I'm very glad they were provided. But everything is working great now, thanks.

I don't know you, but I can access my pc files from my Play with "ES file explorer" without even installing CIFSmanager. The changelog in DK's thread says he removed it, but at least for me it works .
To access from the phone to pc you have to put the folder you want as a "shared folder" and give "total control" permissions to "all". For accessing from the pc to phone just do the same with the folder on your sdcard connected to pc and, go to tools/connect to network device and select that folder. Now you can view your files and do streaming by opening the folder on ES file explorer in LAN section and from "My PC", where it appears as a hard disk with drive letter
e.g. music on "Xperia PLAY R800a" (H:/)
Hope this helped. I'm on DooMKernel v14 with jokawild but this has worked on other ROMs

I rarely use command prompt to perform operation cause I prefer to use flashtool instead, and the only time I installed CWM was through RecoverX, so I haven't experienced the difference.....
Yeah I've used the smb built into ES but I prefer to use the smb functionality built into the Linux kernel to using libsmb, which is what's happening when you use es file explorer, or pretty much anything else with built in smb browsing. I also don't care for ES file explorer's interface. Of course, open manager doesn't have smb support...
I have figured out the mtp/msc stuff some time ago.
anyway, pretty much all the kernels have a recovery, some of them have too many recoverys in my opinion so it doesn't really matter. but if you use fastboot boot boot.img then it boots without installing. I don't know if this works for anything but recovery, like if you could boot a kernel this way, probably not. I like command-line stuff. I do use flashtool's gui for ftfs though, of course.

you have the sequence right, I don't know if nandroid backs up the kernel. I would guess no, but I could be wrong, and hope I am.
you don't care anyway. you can reflash back to a stock kernel. just make very very sure you never flash a cdma to a gsm or a gsm to a cdma. a, at, i are all gsm... if you do that you need testpoint reflash as far as I know.
you should also do a titanium backup, that gets you all the apks on your system now, handy for restoring any games on your current rom that aren't on your new rom.
Well, you can unlock your downloader at any time, by IMEI method through Sony webpage or through alejandrissimo's testpoint method. It is permanent, so it doesn't matter if you change Rom or kernel, it will remain unlocked forever , and if for whatever reason you have to take your phone to carrier for warranty, it will appear locked for Sony (I already did it, and they didn't void my warranty)
Just follow the steps I gave you, it's not that complicated. You can flash first the Rom or first the kernel, it doesn't affect anything, except when you change android version (GB to ICS or something), then flash the kernel first and then the new Rom.
Flashing a rom doesn't change the kernel, so if you're on DoomKernel and "A" Rom, you can switch to "B" Rom and stick to DK, IF IT'S ON THE SAME ANDROID VERSION.
Also you can change kernel while keeping the same rom
And respecting to nandroid backup, it saves everything but kernel, baseband and some sections of internal memory that you should not worry about. That's why you're able to restore a backup with the same or other kernel without any worry

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.

How do I get “root”?

So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?
I read these threads as well whereby they said that there is no "real" solution to the issues:

If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.

I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?

alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....

According to a friend's recommendation I used Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to Root, and surprisingly didn't lose any of my data!
