I'm holding off on messing with CM7 thinking that our phone is sort of on the cutting edge of Android devices and will surely have a version of CM9 becoming available in the not to distant future.
I guess the same could be said of CM7 but that didn't come true did it.
Am I kidding myself about CM9? Who does cyanogenmod develop for typically?
thanks.
CM 7 is awesome. Flash away now

there is no use waiting on CM9 it wont be ready any time that soon. CM7 is great flash it! remember that the various dev teams are not getting paid beyond some random donations for this. and this is all done on their free time.

maybe the free time is the problem. Cm is so mainstream now I think everyone who uses it should pay $20 or so for every version (cm6, cm7, cm9) If they were able to make money off what is really a worthy product they can be able to invest more time and manpower in their projects. Its a shame the more phones they support the harder it is
I agree. I also feel CM should move into creating a company with a large dedicated team of coders that actually work full time on CM projects.
As for money, $10 access to nightlies per device or something similar would make it viable. The project as it stands right now has over a million users I believe. $10 million per version of Android and access to nightlies should be more than enough incentive to do it. And a full time CM team would churn them out like clockwork.
I think that's a ludicrous idea. That destroys the entire spirit of Android deving, it's supposed to be open source. Although I haven't made any roms, or kernels, I am learning. I won't speak for everyone but I would never make people pay to get the roms I develop.
Firstly, some people can't afford that. Secondly, that wouldn't stop other people from distributing it. Or simply kanging it and distributing it to others.
If I've stepped on any toes then I apologize but I just think that charging people just isn't the way to go about this.
-We do what we must because we can; for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead-
I want Cyanogenmod team to get paid for the work they put in however that will just kill the spirit of open source. Once money is involved that means they need to hide parts of codes else people would just redistribute them as freewares or cheaper alternatives which equals a lot of problems and headaches.
I'm pretty sure the developers involved love doing this and enjoy themselves.
Now back to topic, CM7 is surprising very stable on our S2 for an alpha release. I'm sure Samsung will release a ICS upgrade before CM9 comes out.
So I haven't had a smart phone long enough to know how the upgrade works.
If Samsung releases ICS for SHG-T989 will it be available to us or do we have to get it through T-mobile (with all the bloatware back inside)?
When the official ICS from Samsung come out is that when the ICS based ROMs like Juggernaut and Bombarider start coming out?
Complete utter retartedness , CM team work's for samsung & samsung can't sell OS , niether could CM if they wanted too .

Only hired cyanogen himself. I'm pretty sure some things are confidential till released as well he would get fired if certain information got out.. Most likely samsung hired him for his linux skills not cyanogenmod. It just so happen he is the maintainer of cyanogenmod.
If i had to pay for cyanogen i would never use it.

i was looking for new roms for my girl's droid 2 global on rootzwiki the other day and found out about these AOSP ICS Gummy Roms. They're made by a pretty reputable team that includes JRummy (maker of the best root app Rom Toolbox) and they seem to piece together the best parts of AOKP, CM9, and MIUI, so I became very interested in getting this ****.
Maybe I'm just out of the loop and it's really popular, but I've seen nothing about it here. Anyway, since they have pretty up-to-date ROMs for the NS4G and more-so the Fascinate, I thought maybe we could get a working version? And I know how epic devs love to give us as many ICS Rom options as possible...
here's the link to the forum that has all the newest Gummy ROM releases - http://rootzwiki.com/forum/406-releases/
Looks cool even the name makes me wanna have it lol I saw its available for the fascinate so that should help.

You still cherry-pick the cm team (kang) if from source. My kernel is mostly "kanged " from Ezekeel and Team Glitch and it is built from source.

Hmmm..so I got it running on the droid global. 1st thing you notice? Bootup sound is possibly the most irritating thing I've ever heard in my life. The rom itself is pretty solid though. Very quick..much snappier than aokp on the global. However, customization is not as thorough as I expected. There's actually LESS customizable features than on standard aokp or cm9 w/ reloaded mod..though it DOES have a Wimax toggle, which is cool (but weird since the global does not have wimax), and a few things you can't do on cm9 or aokp. All in all id say it might be worth checking out on the epic since it really is pretty quick and has a wimax toggle, but besides that, little is different from other ics roms.

If you guys want to run this ROM, you can just copy app and framework from it to cm9 from the fascinate version. However, if you want to not piss off the cm team, it'd probably be best not to release it, since its pretty much stealing their ROM. And don't bite the hand that feeds you.

isn't that what "open source" is all about? encouraging "stealing" essentially? no one is making money off of "stealing" cm's work or taking money away from the cm team...i don't get it. all this would do is further the experience and provde more options to epic owners.

I agree with you completely on this. Its the point of open source. Just based on my experiences on porting miui, some of their devs are not too keen on the idea of us copying their files in winzip. Just trying to save you from some of the drama I've faced.

It's not all of them, just a select few. Some are very nice and helpful, like UberPinguin and mkasick.
Open source means open source. Everyone (even including the cm team) needs to realize this and get over it. The cm team, or any other dev are by no means required to do this work, as they don't get paid for it. People are not required to pay them for their work, but choose to through donations sometimes. The starters of cm don't whine about people kanging their rom to try to get it working on other devices. It's what we did at first before our cm team was even officially part of cm. No one seems to mind borrowing bits and pieces from other devices, or damn near everything from a source of one original dev who created this and shared it openly, with all, with absolutely no complaints or ****s to give. Just because they've put in so much work on it, they do not own it, and they never have. The only thing that matters is showing respect. Credit to our cm team for porting most/almost all of this, but not without help from many other sources, and the original and also huge contribution from those who started the cm project and have been so selfless and sharing with it.
The point of open source is to not care. To share everything we have freely so that "anything" that is possible can be done. If someone wants to change a framework and some apps, add in some scripts and kernel tweaks, or a custom kernel, call it a rom and release it, they are allowed. That is what every rom before now has been. Android with Samsung's code, with tweaks. No one before now has built an OS for our device completely from the ground up. Everyone acts more high and mighty than they are. The only difference here is that instead of it being the stock software, it's software someone else built, our device's team ported, and now tries to lay claim over.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I must agree. If some cm team (god love them) members want to cause a ruckus over people sharing with open source, then switch over to improving iphones and their closed source.

ok now back to the topic...any rebels wana take a crack at gummy and post it??
So to go back off topic and throw my two cents in.
I think its more of them wanting people to learn to do it the proper way.
Marcus, for example, did this with MIUI and has continued to do so for a while.
He is rather young just yet, and has a TON of potential to get in and learn the real code.
Smali is machine code. Smali is rather hard to explain, read, and visualize.
Kanging by winzip is damn easy file coping. But if you run into bugs, how do you fix it?
Smali code editing? Copy DIFFERENT files over? That's quite impossible and is harder than it needs to be.
The CM9 Devs, I'm sure, do not give a rats ass what you do with their official .zips.
What they do care about is learning and growing the community.
I feel they gave you both, Marcus and xBox, a hard time because they want you to learn the correct tools and the proper process... Not for them, but for the community and yourselves.
You both get into learning C++, Java, etc... You both will make outstanding Devs. You'll help yourselves, the CM9 team, and the community.
That's my opinion. If its totally off base, oh well. I am not speaking for the team. This has not been discussed with me. I have merely been reading what's been available on the forums. Take it or leave it... They want you to learn
Is it just me or has our roms come to a bit of a stand still? Is it because samsungs are hard to develop for, or is it something else?i know ot took quite some time for the infuse to get a good base of devs but i left att before that happened.

Well yeah ive seen the devs working on jellybean and i saw the fg20 leak but I don't trust it given the fact that it's meant for boost. And in terms of jellybean its just a port. Once we start getting the leaks for it who knows what issues we will have. Hell look at how many folks were hard bricked because of the emmc bug. And yeah team rejects pretty much came outta no where but a lot of what they are doing is simply themes (no offense). I'm not hating. I'm just curious is it that hard to develop for samsung devices? HTC has no problems look at all of their devs. Motorola phones have more devs than we do.

It only looks like the developers are at a standstill because they have so much to work with. Source for ics and now leaks for jb, which way to go first?
We're all used to microwaved food and high speed downloads and jumping tweet topics. Meaningful work takes time, just ask anyone who ever used a shovel.

(no offense) but i don't think you follow actual development. I don't normally respond to these threads... but, here we go.
a few things, there is a jelly bean port, yes. but there is also a build from source. as well as tons of activity towards CM10 (JB based incase you were unaware). I develop about 10 hours or more a day for this device (which I don't currently have), because I'm working (with TeamEpic) towards getting official CM device status. This entails a working source kernel, which is done, a new RIL, which is done, now, we are working on merging the kernel with the already official smdk4210 (sgs2, skyrocket, n7000, etc) kernel. once i can do that with minimal changes to the core of the kernel, then official status should be easy. official cm status means not only cm9 support and nightlies from them, but cm10 when it comes along..
just because you don't see development, doesnt mean its not there, you just don't know where to look, and probably wouldnt recognize it you found it.. we developers have a way of not letting things out in the open until WE are ready... i have a ton of projects, but very few release threads.. for a reason.

Thank you Chris41G for ALL the work you do. And thanks to all the others here too! I know how much it takes to get something even close to right. Let alone 'good' as you all tend to do when you do release. It's so hard when you've got twenty other things to do too to 'dev for free' as it were: Like actually work in the real world and take care of family and personal business it's just amazing how much the devs here give.
It's the quiet diligent and hard work (most very much unseen and unrewarding; monitarily anyways) from people like you and the others that give us the opportunity to use and see some great stuff.
I'll just say hat's off and thanks to you'all.
This wasn't me speaking negatively about you or the other devs. I really was asking if it is difficult working on samsung devices. I'm sure you guys put in a lot of work to get the roms/kernels working as smooth as possible. And are working towards better things. I appreciate everything you all do.

Depends on the type of development you're referring to..themeing and winzip dev are equal across manufacturers. Kernel and source based development is usually better on flagship devices, particularly those with unlocked bootloaders.. regardless of manufacturer. GSM devices generally have a larger development base, due to a much larger user base, and a lot more common devices.
I prefer developing on a Samsung device. The only android device I own that isn't a Samsung is my nexus 7

That's because devs like jovy, Rushing and pmt3r pump out the same ROM with 17 thousand different themes. Then we have 5 other guys compiling the same damn cm10 or aokp ROM from source.. In reality we have a small amount of ROMs that are actually built from the ground up. Then our guys take that base and do what they want to it. They have skyICS which to them is their go to touchwiz ROM (and honestly skyICS is better than all of our TW roms combined.) just like Darkside Evolution was ours. Then we have thelastsidekick making another thousand roms instead of just working on one and making it the best it can be. IMO our dev section is cluttered with a bunch of unneeded crap. I'd rather have a few more devs that know enough to cook some kernels instead of devs that just copy and paste what they want to an already existing base.

If its such a huge problem and there's a lack of development work going on, why don't you go ahead and create your own ROM from the ground up or better yet, create us a custom kernel. Don't get offended. It's the truth. Go look at the dev section. Its a mess. Half of you guys don't even post your githubs, sources, or code. So.. you're basically taking bases and kanging them to death. Making the same ROM 10 times . Which I have no problem with. Its open source that's the point. But.. Keep it organized! Work on one project at a time and atleast finish it. You have dumped at least 2 ROMs yourself to start on others. This leaves the dev section a huge mess and easier for newcomers to flash something they shouldn't and risk a brick. Look at the general section. Brick threads galore. And honestly I don't need to contribute by making a ROM or anything of that sort. I contribute by donating like any good flasher should and trying to help others with issues I've had myself. If the garbage was thrown out and the dev section cleaned up we would have less than 7 active threads. Rushing making a new thread for an already made ROM just because it has a different theme? Insanity.

Pmt3r claims that he does.. I don't buy it though. A 4.0.4 kernel built from the ground up would be cool. In the mean time I'm perfectly happy with aokp and CM. I was just stating the obvious.. or unobvious I guess lol.

You don't buy it? I have been testing it for over a week now and its Better than the skyrockets kernel that everyone is flashing. I have screenshots to prove it...

Definitely +1.
Correct me if I'm wrong.. Aren't Cyanogenmod and TW just customized ports from the originals as well? The only roms built from the ground up are the ones that come from Google, samsung, etc. Not being a **** just clarifying not sure if im right

Yes and no. Cyanogenmod is built from the ground up using their own source code that sticks closely to the AOSP source code. As far as Touchwiz goes, it's built from the ground up by Samsung. It's the reason why Wi-Fi calling isn't available on AOSP or AOKP.
Now as far kernels, Samsung has released 4.0.4 source but the only devs I know that have built their own kernel FROM THE GROUND UP are Eugene373s streamline and TDJ venom kernels. As far as other kernels, they all include mods and changes that they have made to the original Samsung kernel. In other words, modding instead of building from scratch.
Like I said, I don't have an issue with this. If I had the time to learn how to dev and cook up my own idea on what a ROM should look like and perform I totally would. But some of us lead different lives and some things just aren't possible. That's why I donate. I feel like a scumbag using something someone made for free that's better than what I actually paid for. But that's just me.
All I'm saying is.. dev section is a mess. Lol mods, let's clean it up and get rid of discontinued ROMs. As a dev if you have different theme ideas and want to post them for your ROM? Put it in its rightful forum. There's a reason the THEMES and apps forum exists. If we already have a certain official ROM unofficially compiled from source, let's agree on one thread instead of having 5 people compile the same ROM. Don't make 10 threads with the same rom and a different theme.
Voiddweller was right. It's a bit out of control. We got too many brick threads and too many people cluttering up threads with questions that have pre-existing answers obtained with a simple search.
Just sayen' fellas. I still visit the NS4G forums, I gave it to my gf and got this. I love that forum. This one? Not so much. When we get devs leaving (TDJ wasn't the first) that says something. You guys wanna see 4.2 on this phone? Fix the forum.
Sorry for wall o text.

I completely agree.
I'd like to introduce my first published ROM to the community.
-What is Infinity about?
The purpose of this ROM is for those who don't care much about dealing with bugs and waiting for updates or tweaks to get a daily driver. My project is to keep this as stock as possible because I believe that the touchwiz features are awesome. I'd like to keep the mods to a minimum to maintain functionality and keep the ROM as bug free as possible. Infinity fits perfectly as the name of this ROM as it allows YOU, the user, to make infinite choices to how you want your phone to feel and act like. While I am the chef, I feel its your resposibility to chose the themes and mods ypud like to add as you see fit.
- who this ROM is not for?
This ROM is not for those who are here to flame others or rudely criticize my work. While I accept suggestions and constructive criticism , I will not allow rudeness. Please feel free to post questions or concerns here as I may not ever get to my PMs. Enjoy.
Download instructions:
*download to SD
*backup ROM
*flash in recovery using favorite recovery method
If coming from another ROM I'd recommend wiping data . If coming from stock id still recommend wiping data but your willing to try and dirty flash.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the sudden death of your phone if you flash this wrong or flash mods not compatible with this.

Will flash tonight! As long as you are working towards including AOSP lockscreen, contacts, and messenger, I will stick with you the whole way. As far as the power mods, can you include screenshot? I know you can hold power and home, its just easier if its in the power menu.
Running very fast and smooth so far. Did you take out the calendar widget? The app for it is there but no widget.
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback so far. Uh. I probably took the calendar widget out on accident. I will work on it tonight. Still at work. For now. You can push the calendar widget apk into system settings. Screenshot in power menu should be next then I assume. hopefully I get some time tonight if the wife does the come a call in'. I'll get some screenies also. I'd also recommend using faux stock kernel in the other thread for a boost. Been reading some good things about his mainline edition.

Speaking of widgets. Are there any others from stock that you guys prefer to have back. I took out some of the bloat ones to free up some space. I did also remove a few live wallpapers since I don't personally use them.

I have always envied team kang and their stock build since it includes lock screen options. I may have to call upon them and see if they'll assist me in my pursuit of aosp options. Ive youve ever used the sgs2 and the Juggernaut ROM you'd know how awesome the ROM control option was.

There's so much to say but trying to be respectful at the same time. Grrrrrrr. Do you really know what you're doing, or do you only understand the basics and know how to make a flashable zip rom? I'm being serious and not trying to be a ****... its just it seems like a.... pointless thread/rom... as of now. Of course when it can be a AOSP/TW ROM that's awesome, but now???!!! Just seems not very important. Again not trying to be a jerk, just speaking my mind.
You saying "uh. I probably took the calendar widget out on accident" makes me want to not flash the ROM, I understand trial and error but, that should be done before publicizing your work. I'm an A-Hole and this and that so be it, criticism sucks.

No I understand where you're coming from. My haste to get this out there superceeded my common sense. Also my poor word choice also can be a fault in people not wanting to try this. I am not completely new at this. Although I am not alone in creating a ROM using the kitchen. That is the difference between "original" android development in this forum and "android development". A few ROMs I've seen in this section were probably made using the kitchen ad out does the basic for you. The rest is actually knowing Smali and baksmali, compiling and dwcompiling of XML files and such. That isy weakness as I have to search countless forums and guides to find out how to do it in my own. Everyone started somewhere. As much as I want to pull this ROM now I feel I should be more careful in what I say and how I add mods and test them. I know nowadays people seek the ROMs that are "flashy" and have tons of features but it comes at a price. I am not just building for people but foe fun and foe myself. I do run my roms and therefore don't want to brick my own device. I appreciate the criticism as you are probably saying what others don't. Its all part of the learning process. On the other hand, there are plenty of awesome ROMs to choose from.

and you sir have earned my utmost respect, as you called me out exactly how I felt adn few others that have have PM'd me. I'm looking greatly forward to your JB TW/ AOSP rom and so are others. I'm extremely happy the way you took it all sir. and I will gladly test/ tell others how your rom feels. In a an honest matter obviously, but only as you start implementing heavily the CM/AOSP features.

Thanks man. The journey will be long and difficult. Again I appreciate everyone's patience. I have some time tonight to mess around with some code. I believe I have the power menu figured out. And I wanted to ask. Do you guys prefer lidroid toggles which are customizable or something else. I preferably like the stock ones but something customizable could be added as a zip instead of a default. That is why I'd like to really dig into aroma which would allow maximum user customization but its gonna take more than one night of studying the tutorial and testing. I'll add back the calendar and hopefully have advanced power menu up. No eta yet.

crt-on or crt-off would be nice!
Smooth rom bro! Glad to have another developer in the s3 forums. Request: black status bar and I hope the rom will keep a stock look

I believe options in aroma would be the way to go. I personally would like the 15 toggle mod built in. I totally understand that you are learning as you go, i am just thankful to have someone working on this. After you put the calendar back in (lol) and add the basic power mods and such, i would be cool with you adding AOSP features one at a time. That would also help with testing.
