I've been wanting the Galaxy Nexus since the announcement but never got around to getting it. I ended up getting a GS2 Skyrocket and have fallen in love with LTE.
Do you think it's worth dumping my skyrocket for the GN? What's the current state of ROM development?
I dumped the skyrocket but I don't live in lte market. And I don't load roms. Stock gnex ics > skyrocket touchwiz

I kind of miss the stock Google experience.. once a new version of Android is announced, you're the first to get it Kinda wish the GN is $529 like the N1 was
No, LTE > ICS.
Of course you could do like me and switch to Verizon and have both.

LTE has a huge battery drain.
GSM variant of Galaxy Nexus has better battery life and less mAh
Lots of good roms. switch to verizon and get lte too. To be honest if verizon had a GSII I would think twice about my purchase. I love ICS but the camera on this phone drives me nuts. Plus I don't hate Touch Wiz.

For you, maybe. You can't make that blanket statement for everyone... And I'm sure OP is happy with AT&T (and/or locked in with a large ETF if he's got a Skyrocket).
havent experienced the sg2 myself so i doont know how good it is, but i got the nexus last saturday and i love it more and more everyday. AWESOME PHONE!

Yeah but I get 40+ Mbps. Kinda like how Ferraris get terrible gas mileage because a V12 has huge gas drain.

If budget permits, I would say yes, go for the GN. But if I were you at a time like this, I would wait for MWC (Mobile World Congress) where Samsung is allegedly announcing the Galaxy S3 and see what they have to offer in that aspect.
I'm pretty much stuck to AT&T because I get a huge discount off my monthly bill through work
I totally forgot about the Galaxy S3.. hummm

Ummmm... Mobile Hot Spot! Verizon has yet to throttle me on 4G... I use atleast 12-15 GB's / month. That is where it pays off to have Verizon LTE and unlimited data...
Lol again, Verizon is not an option for me. I pay close to $100 a month right now for 4 lines + unlimited data on 3 lines. With Verizon, I'd be paying over $200
Honestly HSPA+ speed are good enough for me in a mobile device. I browse, stream a lot and speeds are good enough. Average around 5Mbps is good for me. Sure I will take lte if there is an option, but it's not a big deal. Finally it comes down personal choice, if you are teethering may be lte speeds are good but for normal usage no big deal.

Fair enough, but the only ones I've seen complaining about their Galaxy Nexus are the ones getting the US carrier-Nexuses. On overall GSM owners seems happier.
Which may or may not be relevant to OP, so it's worth getting out there.
---------- Post added at 10:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 AM ----------
To OP: I don't have LTE, so I have no idea what I would be dumping, but this is my general take on the Galaxy Nexus (from another thread)
Seriously though: I think this phone is the best phone I've ever had. For those returning it, it probably wasn't.
This phone was hyped like nothing I have ever seen, and lots of people probably bought it on the wrong premises. Some people probably bought this phone thinking this would be the Android Jesus-device who would save the souls of Apple-users en-masse by its presence alone. A device which could slay iStore employees by simply taking it out of your pocket. A gadget so shiny, the sun would feel its competition. Etc.
To those people, this device probably didn't deliver. They probably returned it.
To me though this phone is a godsend. Not only is the HW pretty good, it is also 100% open. It's a device whose openness is unprecedented in other types of phones.
I can compile Android from source and flash on this device. Using open tools which I've also built from source. It's not just something I say that you "can" do. I've built the source and deployed on my phone. No hacking or closed drivers or protocols required. Why? Just because I can. It gives you a feeling of actual ownership which is hard to describe or match.
If I want to run nothing but stock but rooted, I can do that without any need to meddle deeply with the phone. In fact, if all I want is a custom recovery to do nandroid backups, I can do that without flashing or modifying the phone in any way.
How? It's easy. I can boot my phone off a boot-image (and hence recovery-image too) hosted outside the phone. I can boot my phone from code hosted outside it. No hacking required. Absolutely none.
This is what a Nexus device is all about. It's all fully open. It does what you ask it. Even if it is retarded. Even if it is singing the Hello Kitty theme song while in the bootloader. Because the device is open. It's yours. It's yours to do exactly what you want with it.
The openness of this thing is amazing. For me, there is absolutely no other phone I would consider. Others might land at some other choice and that is perfectly fine too.
People returning this phone are probably doing it because they followed internet-hype and didn't research what they were actually buying.

If you think that sounds awesome, LTE is probably worth dumping. If you think "that sounds... like something I dont care about at all", then probably not.
Had the Verizon GN. Was surprised to find that I actually had 4g where I lived. Got ~35mbps down and ~7mbps up. With mild use, was finding it difficult to get the battery to last through the day.
Returned it, bought the unlocked GSM version, popped an at&t similar in, and now my battery lasts all day with almost twice as much use and 30% left at night. Pages load at roughly the same speed. Call quality is better (maybe just where I live, but the Verizon version was always a little "glitchy").
Just my experience with LTE and the nexus.

I have both phones and love both, skyrocket gives me 2 days in one charge easily, gnex only about 10-14 hours with extended battery but love stock ics.
If you already have the skyrocket then stick with it, its a great phone, if you dont have neither, get the Gnex gsm.
For now, LTE is the future. I carry a spare battery if and when needed. Battery technology will always be playing catch up.

which SGS2 model did you order?
I just decided to read the reviews for the phone on t-mo.com (sort of the final step before I buy one after work today just to make sure there aren't any massive issues people have been reporting that I've missed) and I have to say, and I apologize allgamer because this is sort of off-topic, they were ****ing hilarious.
One guy claimed this phone should not be advertised as a non-LTE phone because it is a LTE device (huh? HSPA+ is definitely the same as LTE...waaaaait...). Another claimed that because there was no wifi calling, you couldn't surf the web on wifi! OH EM GEE GAIZ U CNT SUFR TEH WEBZ! Wait no...My Nexus S can't do Wifi calling and I can (and do) use it on WiFi all the time. Same with my Epic 4G. Same with my Evo 4G. Same with my MT3G. Same with my wife's Evo Shift 4G. Same with my Wife's Nexus S. Wow, I guess samsung must have really screwed the pooch or something to make it so that wifi calling was linked to all wifi use. Yikes! They better fix that soon! (That was sarcasm, FYI).
On a serious note though, I've done the reading, compared to the Amaze and watched the Galaxy Nexus launch and I'm not convinced any of them are or will be better than this phone on t-mo. The only real huge selling points of the GN (compared to the SGS2) are the HD screen and ICS; we'll get ICS and .15in diagonally larger isn't really that much so oh well. As for the Amaze? Its really only got better resolution which I couldn't find an issue with in store and I have pretty discerning eyes. Yes, I could see the difference but I couldn't see it making an impact on my daily life.
In summation, and as a non-owner of the SGS2 I'd have to tell the OP that yes, you did in fact make the right choice!

I am getting the Galaxy Nexus just because it has no buttons. To tell the truth our phone is bigger because the virtual buttons take of space on the screen. Other than that the galaxy nexus has no real selling factor besides icecream sandwich.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my short ownership of this device, but after the OMG nature of ICS wore off, it's really just an average phone.
I've ordered a Galaxy Note and will be here Monday. Despite touchwiz, slow updates, blabla, the Note just seems like an incredible device that can finally allow me to leave my laptop behind.
Not trolling, just posting as others may find interest in the Note once the newness of the Nexus wears off.
If you are interested in buying direct, PM me. I will be very fair on the price if it's done outside of eBay's ridiculous fees. Steinheil protector + spare, case and absolutely mint with everything.
No, this isn't an ad for my phone. It's jut a post that's intended to generate discussion on the comparison.
To be honest I would have purchased a note also, but it won't work with T-Mobile 3g. I love my nexus though, and the development on here will make it truely remarkable

I came from a note and got the nexus and I don't regret returning the note at all. The note had very bad color banding or at least mine did. Also videos were horrible due to a halo effect that would show up in a white background. I hope it was just my unit but it seems like many were having the same issue as I did. The only thing I liked much more about the note was the battery life. Would last me sometimes 3 days! Nexus doesn't even come close...

i just did the opposite! i bought a gsm note to use on ATT but it had several issues. had problems with the capacitive touch buttons not working after phone calls. the phone would also shut it self off randomly. i returned it because of those problems. if it wasnt for that it was a really cool phone. the extra screen real estate was nice for games and web sites.
I'm not saying this because I have a Nexus, but I find it hard to understand how you find it just an average phone. The camera is about the only average thing about it, everything else runs so well in ICS which makes the experience as a whole so much more coherent.
The only thing I'd really wish for at the moment would be an LTE version for GSM carriers.

Yeah, I considered that, but ATT will drop the legendary Exoynos processor because it isn't compatible with LTE.
That and who knows how ATT will handle grandfathered unlimited plans that try to go to LTE. I simply don't trust them to let me keep it.

Hello better phone with ICS in the pipeline? Wacom digitizer and all.
Different strokes, I guess. I've owned the Nexus One, Nexus S, SGSII, EVO. Pure google, while nice, ends up being modded to hell anyway by most, so it's not an issue for me personally. I don't like touchwiz, but that's fixable with launchers.
If the Note was going to be on Verizon I would have thought about it. If it gets a CM9 port then it could be a killer phone. My brother-in-law imported one for his AT&T line and I got to play with it. VERYYY NICE.

I have nothing to prove to anyone. Just think the 2500 mAh battery, wacom digitizer and real-estate of the Note are worthy advantages.
Not going to launch into an I'VE FOUND THE JESUS PHONE debate. Most all modern phones are pretty close in performance/features anyway.
Just my preference. The Nexus is a great device, but not the absolute best ever. If it didn't have ICS, this forum would be lit up with endless *****ing.

You shouldn't need to make a thread to justify your decision. Cool, you're going to the Galaxy Note, good luck. The Galaxy Nexus forum will continue the way it is without you.
If you didn't want a debate about Galaxy Nexus vs. Galaxy Note, then just post up your ad in the marketplace and be on your way. Simple as that.
This is a thread for discussion, not spam.
It's basically sold already, but thanks for the slap.
By the way, its not an ad. I simply mentioned it's available if anyone was interested, which several are so far.

What are your thoughts on the Note vs. the Nexus?
Ok, so I feel that I've ruffled feathers. Will a mod please move this to the for sale forum so I can be a good senior member like I have been since 2006?
That way, XDA homeostasis is reached for all.
Thanks.
There are rumors that the Note is coming to ATT early next year with LTE. Nice, right? Except there is one problem...
They are replacing the Exynos with a Snapdragon S3.
They also had to do this with the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile because the Exynos chipset apparently has problems playing nicely with high speed networks such as LTE and T-Mobiles 42 Mbps HSPA+ network.
Will make it exceptionally difficult to dev for. And since it's basically a different device with a different SoC, kiss frequent and timely updates goodbye.
If the Note appeals to you, go for it. Just saying, aside from the bigger screen, a S3-verison Note doesn't seem to have any huge advantage over the Nexus.
I've had both. The note is a great device, but IMO the GN is better overall.
I would of gotten a Note instead if it supported t-mobile, sigh.
I'm hoping by the time Note II comes out, samsung will have resolved the shortcomings of exynos' radios as well as samoled+ HD. I will jump all over that.

This argument is so old.
People on sprint/verizon don't get 6mbps. It's 1mbps or 4G, which do you think people would obviously prefer (barring battery issues)
Are the new phones going to crush the gnex / performance wise?
I am sitting on a verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan right now.
Verizon is holding off on its new batch of uber phones until it sets up its tiered data plan, that also will void your unlimited data plan.
Will i be crying like a little baby when june rolls around and the new phones come out and possibly destroy the Gnex?
Or will the S3 and other phun phones be only a small step up in real world performance.
The Gnex is only $199 now on verizon and the extended 2100mah battery is 1/2 off at 24$ ..
Thinking of going the nexus route to keep my unlimited data for a few more years.
Thoughts ?
As you can tell by my sig, im sort of a phone whore.
The reason why many people choose the nexus line is because of the stock android experience. It will also have the largest rom and development support until probably the next nexus. It seems like if you realty want to keep unlimited data then you have to get the nexus. After researching thoroughly I'm sure you'll be more than satisfied.

thx for the info.
I personally don't see the newer phones coming at as that much of an upgrade where I would risk losing my unlimited data for.
I get about 24 hours on a charge with over 4 hours of screen time using the 2100mah battery. That's with moderate use and multiple email accounts and the weather widget syncing.
wow
if i could get anywhere near that then i would be very happy.

Gnex is a nice phone I would grab it and salvage another year or two of unlimited....the new phones will be better....but not by much...especially US versions. On the other hand AOSP on the LTE Gnex is crippled by Verizon and still hasn't even received 4.0.4.....updates are apparently coming through Verizon which to me makes it hardly a "pure Google experience"....so much for the newest version first....sad really...

Hold off until the last minute. If something else cones around before the cut off date, whenever that will be announced, get it. If nothing new or better is available buy the gnex. After the data cap plan goes into effect you can still keep unlimited by not paying for phones on a new contract. Just buy them outright.... which will be expensive.

How is it crippled on AOSP? I had IMM76D on it within hours of release. Same with IMM76I. I am guessing that you are referring to the missing proprietaries. Not really a crippling blow, more like a minor inconvenience.
Also, updates don't come from Verizon. Verizon just approves when Google can OTA them.

I don't see how sitting around waiting for a carrier to approve a update is any different than any other cellphone period. Nexus is supposed to be latest greatest....Verizon has made the Nexus like every other phone....to me that warrants choices. Every phone will be running AOKP so sitting around waiting seems a bit crippling when the ONLY thing you are getting from a Nexus at this point is AOSP.
The advantages the Gnex had on other devices are slowly dwindling away.....I still think it's a nice phone that's why I told him to get it. Maybe you feel its a inconvenience.....I feel its business as usual..... not a "pure Google experience" lol.

True, regarding OTAs, but it is hardly AOSP crippled (so far). As long as US carriers like Sprint, ATT, and Verizon are in control, this is likely not going to change.
There are a lot of issues with OTAs on the Galaxy Nexus. Heck, there are some yakjuxx variants still on 4.0.1. I know I personally didn't buy it for quick stock updates. I have always felt that Android does not fit Verizon's business model. I felt that years ago, and I still think that is the case today.
Unless the GS3 is a winner to you... then no nothing else coming out on VZW will be better than the Galaxy Nexus.. unless you like the Galaxy Note aka "Journey" or the Razr HD that is rumor to be coming out..
But the Nexus will always be better later on this year when "Key Lime Pie" or w/e Google decides to name its next OS Version because those GS3'S and Razr's are going to take ages to get upgraded to 4.2 or 5.0 just like most phones now who is still on ICS.. Leaks will always leak out..
You can keep your unlimited data plan even when VZW change their plans.. you just going to need to buy your next phone full price.. no discounts no upgrades..
anything that will make you sign a new 2 year contract will take you out of the grandfather plan
I just did exactly what the OP is asking. I had the GNEX on release day but had massive signal issues. I went back to my Bionic and waited. Then I tried the gnex again, same issues. I went and got the Razor maxx, great battery life mediocore phone. I just jumped on the GNEX again and third times a charm. I love it. Im running Franco MS3 and AOKP and I get through the day and night no problem.

Droid Razr makes me want to cut my wrist. Gnex is FAR superior to that gimmick. Good choice man....don't turn back to the darkside.

Yah, darkside is right.... I left out that I had the iPhone 4 and 4s a few times also.....

Bet this is gonna end up like ICS for the S2 series. AT&T is gonna be the last to get JB.
Stock ICS on my S3
.... i'm not even a Sprint customer.... but am i the only one who noticed in the screen cap of that message where it says:
"This software update will be pushed to existing Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 customers over a few week period."
Think if you're staying up all night.... i wouldn't recommend it. haha

Well yeah, that's typically how updates roll out. Or at least over a few day period. Not sure if it was that article or another similar one I read but it stated it would likely be week before everyone had the update. On the bright side we will have a solid release for roms, and maybe JB source.

+1 I think Xmas, maybe. ATT is probably going to make sure it performs worse than the iphone now that it has lte.
I have to say though, I'm fairly happy with a mod'd tw and the Google Now for ICS... But I still think the wifi stinks even with uchl9.

I call BS, there have been ZERO reports of Sprint users actually getting the update on their phones yet:

Really? You think AT&T is going to voluntarily make it perform worse than the iPhone? Soooo.... AT&T is the ONLY carrier with the iPhone? I did not know that. Not to mention that i don't recall ever really going into an AT&T store and having an employee walk up to me vigorously promoting the iPhone trying to force me into buying one as if it's the JesusPhone. If they did, i'd walk right the hell out.

BS... It was the complete opposite. Their profit margins off of the iPhone are slim to none as compared to other phones they sold at the time. Still is that way to this day...

Yes, I do. I know for a fact that that iphone customers are the vast majority of the customer base, have been for years now, historically 20 Iphones are sold for every other phone combined. In the last quarter with three months of Android sales with great models like the HTC and GS3, they still sold 5x as many Iphones and the new model was only available for one month.
In addition att tweaks the network and the build.prop in Android to insure that the iphone outperforms other devices (so long as there is capacity). There are known cases where android phones were miss-identified to the network as to their speed capacity. Iphones don't have the new pat apn and using it on a LTE apple device won't get you a network connection.
Simply put ATT doesn’t really care about android phones and only sells them to satisfy a niche market and to fill out price points. They don't have much pull with Apple for bloatware or the timing of updates. The gs3 l9 firmware patch removed 2.4/5ghz switch shows that they want to reduce customers calling to the call center and any confusion people had about the bad wifi performance of the gs3 where one of the fixes was to not scan both bands.
Look at the reduced pricing for the Android phones across the board, they want to move them out. The Sony TL will be released in a couple weeks for $99, already less than the ion was at release. Ion was free at Sony's stores and websites in the last weeks. BB has been selling gs3 for $99; the TL doesn’t stand a chance.
ATT likes to pee into android firmware claiming that it doesn't meet the network standards. Every att branded android firmware update has been delayed by this excuse. Serious bugs, they will fix, it's bad publicity, updated firmware? They rather not, if they don't have to, and the longer they can string it out, the more likely you will upgrade your phone.
It's been reported that they have already gone through 3 firmware betas.

Calm down. Lol. I don't know what you are talking about. I get great/excellent network performance out of my gs3. I pull 30+ on LTE easily. Soo many conspiracy theories.

Interesting points, but it seems odd that they would continue to get so many exclusive android devices if they didn't really care about the market or keep that market happy. (galaxy Note, original SGS2, and now HTC one x+ just off the top of my head)

While stan.s seems to be pushing the theory farther than most, I am glad his theory doesn't include "AT&T is updating their bloatware, blah, blah, blah."
I recently realized that AT&T already released the Galaxy Note II, which comes with Jelly Bean and includes the same three teensy bloatware apps: AT&T Messages, AT&T Hotspot, and AT&T Navigator. They've all been updated for Jelly Bean already.
Something network related seems plausible and that's what the AT&T reps indicated ("a strain on the network"); in fact, they explicitly noted that Sprint's network was much smaller, so the rollout came quicker.
When do you think we will start seeing the first lollipop roms?

That doesn't seem reasonable for at least two reasons.
1. I was under the assumption that Lollipop uses less resources than KitKat (that is at least what the propaganda is saying)
2. You have devices like the Incredible and Bionic that are running 4.4.4... our device is much newer and much more powerful than those...
3. I have 4.4.4 running on my device and it seems to be handling it fine....
Its my understanding that Google dropped AOSP source code for CDMA devices (at least the GNex) after 4.2.2 and CM merges have been barely keeping the Sprint GNex in the game. Its a shame too. My Nexus 4 literally had hardware problems on day 4 making it nothing more than a speakerphone and even with insurance, Google Play wanted to hold $450 on my debit card for 6 weeks while they searched for water or drop damage. That was with insurance. The GNex still feels like a well built device even though the specs aren't the most impressive
I found old Miui and CM7 ROMs buried in my Dropbox for my NS4G so I am going to go old school with that device this weekend just for fun

1. we will have to wait and see about that.
2. those devices also are not slated to get lolipop.
3.Kitkat for me is not as fast as other phones. Quite laggy if you know where to look. Also- for us to get lolipop- we would need a dev to get drivers and such for out device. Its nearly guaranteed that Samsung is not going to revive this 4 year old device.
ill be upgrading to the note 4. this was just a transition device for me, it wasn't all that impressive.

I had the Note 2 which was a game changer with the 8 hours of screen time daily even overclocked but passed on the Note 3 and got the HTC One M7 which turned out to be a great move. I SIM unlocked it and Super-CIDed it then switched to the T-Mobile $70 unlimited everything plan and I get LTE averaging 35MB down and 30 up with WiFi calling and text and even pulled 5 days on one charge with 4+ hours of screen time.... but I am going to have to get the Note 4. I have been waiting for a more sturdy metallic feeling device from Samsung... I just don't know if I should use one of my 2 Sprint upgrades I have sitting here or go with the T-Mobile version. GSM devices get so much more Dev support
This made it look more promising than before.
But I've been around old phones where hope is lost but some Dev somewhere takes on a challenge and makes it work. Whether or not this happens no one will know for sure... The point is though, there is hope and if you want it that badly there's always the opportunity to learn something new. Heck, my old HTC Hero had some ICS builds, they sucked but...

Yeah that's why I have been sitting on 2 Sprint upgrades for over a year now...Sprint's Tri-Band LTE speeds are mediocre and I am in a prime coverage area meanwhile my $70 unlimited everything T-Mobile HTC One M7 is blazing fast all of the time...

I don't see this being impossible, I mean I have the G1 and someone got freaking JB on that at one point, I run 4.0 with only moderate lag on the thing. I think people just keep talking around the elephant in the room, the TI OMAP, because it doesn't have drivers...well neither did a lot of phones, for a lot of stuff. A "thanks" bounty and a donation to whoever gets this working :fingers-crossed:
Verizon is terrible in my area. Sprint was much better. It matters where you are. I'll try us cellular when my current contract is up.

I just seen it the other day. If I'm on 3G I can't do anything internet related....At all. Play store can't display anything, the browser won't load pages and some apps that require data will say they need an internet connection. Speeds are equal to AOL if not worse. 4G on the other hand is not bad. It can be better but I can at least do everything I need to.

unfortunately, I used 55-65GB per month, so I can't leave Sprint. $50 per month.... just can't make a justification for changing. My service where I live is pretty good and i have LTE coverage everywhere but where I actually live... lol. but they gave me an air-rave to provide me a 3G signal, but I use Wifi for anything data at home.

I was hoping some devs still had the Galaxy Nexus lying around and built some lollipop ROMs for it. The Evo 4G LTE runs incredibly fast and smooth with Lollipop. I am actually moving that device up to 5.1.1 today which is a more current Android version then my M9 currently has running on it
