Just ordered my SGS2 online! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Do you guys think I made the right choice of ordering the sgs2 instead of the Amaze?
How's dev so far for this phone? Any recommendations you guys can give as far rooting, custom rom & kernel?
So excited to get this new phone!

Yes you did make the right chose indeed! The development is kinda slow at the moment. People wasting so much time deciding between the amaze and sgsii. Once we get root, expect the development to kick off and some goodies!

It's all waiting on the root, then it's on!

You said the best answer. Why are people expecting MIRACLES on 34th Street? This phone is about a week old. I hope you guys don't expect a newborn to walk.

YES! I'm loving it even without root, which I'm confident we will have within a week!
I'm planning on rooting, removing the bloat, adding google talk with video, unrooting, then leaving it alone for a month or so.

which SGS2 model did you order?

I just decided to read the reviews for the phone on t-mo.com (sort of the final step before I buy one after work today just to make sure there aren't any massive issues people have been reporting that I've missed) and I have to say, and I apologize allgamer because this is sort of off-topic, they were ****ing hilarious.
One guy claimed this phone should not be advertised as a non-LTE phone because it is a LTE device (huh? HSPA+ is definitely the same as LTE...waaaaait...). Another claimed that because there was no wifi calling, you couldn't surf the web on wifi! OH EM GEE GAIZ U CNT SUFR TEH WEBZ! Wait no...My Nexus S can't do Wifi calling and I can (and do) use it on WiFi all the time. Same with my Epic 4G. Same with my Evo 4G. Same with my MT3G. Same with my wife's Evo Shift 4G. Same with my Wife's Nexus S. Wow, I guess samsung must have really screwed the pooch or something to make it so that wifi calling was linked to all wifi use. Yikes! They better fix that soon! (That was sarcasm, FYI).
On a serious note though, I've done the reading, compared to the Amaze and watched the Galaxy Nexus launch and I'm not convinced any of them are or will be better than this phone on t-mo. The only real huge selling points of the GN (compared to the SGS2) are the HD screen and ICS; we'll get ICS and .15in diagonally larger isn't really that much so oh well. As for the Amaze? Its really only got better resolution which I couldn't find an issue with in store and I have pretty discerning eyes. Yes, I could see the difference but I couldn't see it making an impact on my daily life.
In summation, and as a non-owner of the SGS2 I'd have to tell the OP that yes, you did in fact make the right choice!

I am getting the Galaxy Nexus just because it has no buttons. To tell the truth our phone is bigger because the virtual buttons take of space on the screen. Other than that the galaxy nexus has no real selling factor besides icecream sandwich.

I just realized one thing I don't know about the S2...does it come with a mSD and if so what size is it?

GSM Galaxy Nexus going on eBay - Galaxy Note en route

I've thoroughly enjoyed my short ownership of this device, but after the OMG nature of ICS wore off, it's really just an average phone.
I've ordered a Galaxy Note and will be here Monday. Despite touchwiz, slow updates, blabla, the Note just seems like an incredible device that can finally allow me to leave my laptop behind.
Not trolling, just posting as others may find interest in the Note once the newness of the Nexus wears off.
If you are interested in buying direct, PM me. I will be very fair on the price if it's done outside of eBay's ridiculous fees. Steinheil protector + spare, case and absolutely mint with everything.
No, this isn't an ad for my phone. It's jut a post that's intended to generate discussion on the comparison.
To be honest I would have purchased a note also, but it won't work with T-Mobile 3g. I love my nexus though, and the development on here will make it truely remarkable

I came from a note and got the nexus and I don't regret returning the note at all. The note had very bad color banding or at least mine did. Also videos were horrible due to a halo effect that would show up in a white background. I hope it was just my unit but it seems like many were having the same issue as I did. The only thing I liked much more about the note was the battery life. Would last me sometimes 3 days! Nexus doesn't even come close...

i just did the opposite! i bought a gsm note to use on ATT but it had several issues. had problems with the capacitive touch buttons not working after phone calls. the phone would also shut it self off randomly. i returned it because of those problems. if it wasnt for that it was a really cool phone. the extra screen real estate was nice for games and web sites.
I'm not saying this because I have a Nexus, but I find it hard to understand how you find it just an average phone. The camera is about the only average thing about it, everything else runs so well in ICS which makes the experience as a whole so much more coherent.
The only thing I'd really wish for at the moment would be an LTE version for GSM carriers.

Yeah, I considered that, but ATT will drop the legendary Exoynos processor because it isn't compatible with LTE.
That and who knows how ATT will handle grandfathered unlimited plans that try to go to LTE. I simply don't trust them to let me keep it.
6mbps is plenty fast since I don't tether.

Hello better phone with ICS in the pipeline? Wacom digitizer and all.
Different strokes, I guess. I've owned the Nexus One, Nexus S, SGSII, EVO. Pure google, while nice, ends up being modded to hell anyway by most, so it's not an issue for me personally. I don't like touchwiz, but that's fixable with launchers.
If the Note was going to be on Verizon I would have thought about it. If it gets a CM9 port then it could be a killer phone. My brother-in-law imported one for his AT&T line and I got to play with it. VERYYY NICE.

I have nothing to prove to anyone. Just think the 2500 mAh battery, wacom digitizer and real-estate of the Note are worthy advantages.
Not going to launch into an I'VE FOUND THE JESUS PHONE debate. Most all modern phones are pretty close in performance/features anyway.
Just my preference. The Nexus is a great device, but not the absolute best ever. If it didn't have ICS, this forum would be lit up with endless *****ing.

You shouldn't need to make a thread to justify your decision. Cool, you're going to the Galaxy Note, good luck. The Galaxy Nexus forum will continue the way it is without you.
If you didn't want a debate about Galaxy Nexus vs. Galaxy Note, then just post up your ad in the marketplace and be on your way. Simple as that.
This is a thread for discussion, not spam.
It's basically sold already, but thanks for the slap.
By the way, its not an ad. I simply mentioned it's available if anyone was interested, which several are so far.
An ad is a thread with the sole purpose of selling an item. This thread is not. Feel free to add to the discussion.
What are your thoughts on the Note vs. the Nexus?
Ok, so I feel that I've ruffled feathers. Will a mod please move this to the for sale forum so I can be a good senior member like I have been since 2006?
That way, XDA homeostasis is reached for all.
Thanks.
There are rumors that the Note is coming to ATT early next year with LTE. Nice, right? Except there is one problem...
They are replacing the Exynos with a Snapdragon S3.
They also had to do this with the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile because the Exynos chipset apparently has problems playing nicely with high speed networks such as LTE and T-Mobiles 42 Mbps HSPA+ network.
Will make it exceptionally difficult to dev for. And since it's basically a different device with a different SoC, kiss frequent and timely updates goodbye.
If the Note appeals to you, go for it. Just saying, aside from the bigger screen, a S3-verison Note doesn't seem to have any huge advantage over the Nexus.
I've had both. The note is a great device, but IMO the GN is better overall.
I would of gotten a Note instead if it supported t-mobile, sigh.
I'm hoping by the time Note II comes out, samsung will have resolved the shortcomings of exynos' radios as well as samoled+ HD. I will jump all over that.

People on sprint/verizon don't get 6mbps. It's 1mbps or 4G, which do you think people would obviously prefer (barring battery issues)

Worth dumping LTE for this?

I've been wanting the Galaxy Nexus since the announcement but never got around to getting it. I ended up getting a GS2 Skyrocket and have fallen in love with LTE.
Do you think it's worth dumping my skyrocket for the GN? What's the current state of ROM development?
I dumped the skyrocket but I don't live in lte market. And I don't load roms. Stock gnex ics > skyrocket touchwiz

If budget permits, I would say yes, go for the GN. But if I were you at a time like this, I would wait for MWC (Mobile World Congress) where Samsung is allegedly announcing the Galaxy S3 and see what they have to offer in that aspect.

Ummmm... Mobile Hot Spot! Verizon has yet to throttle me on 4G... I use atleast 12-15 GB's / month. That is where it pays off to have Verizon LTE and unlimited data...
Lol again, Verizon is not an option for me. I pay close to $100 a month right now for 4 lines + unlimited data on 3 lines. With Verizon, I'd be paying over $200
Honestly HSPA+ speed are good enough for me in a mobile device. I browse, stream a lot and speeds are good enough. Average around 5Mbps is good for me. Sure I will take lte if there is an option, but it's not a big deal. Finally it comes down personal choice, if you are teethering may be lte speeds are good but for normal usage no big deal.

Fair enough, but the only ones I've seen complaining about their Galaxy Nexus are the ones getting the US carrier-Nexuses. On overall GSM owners seems happier.
Which may or may not be relevant to OP, so it's worth getting out there.
---------- Post added at 10:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 AM ----------
To OP: I don't have LTE, so I have no idea what I would be dumping, but this is my general take on the Galaxy Nexus (from another thread)
Seriously though: I think this phone is the best phone I've ever had. For those returning it, it probably wasn't.
This phone was hyped like nothing I have ever seen, and lots of people probably bought it on the wrong premises. Some people probably bought this phone thinking this would be the Android Jesus-device who would save the souls of Apple-users en-masse by its presence alone. A device which could slay iStore employees by simply taking it out of your pocket. A gadget so shiny, the sun would feel its competition. Etc.
To those people, this device probably didn't deliver. They probably returned it.
To me though this phone is a godsend. Not only is the HW pretty good, it is also 100% open. It's a device whose openness is unprecedented in other types of phones.
I can compile Android from source and flash on this device. Using open tools which I've also built from source. It's not just something I say that you "can" do. I've built the source and deployed on my phone. No hacking or closed drivers or protocols required. Why? Just because I can. It gives you a feeling of actual ownership which is hard to describe or match.
If I want to run nothing but stock but rooted, I can do that without any need to meddle deeply with the phone. In fact, if all I want is a custom recovery to do nandroid backups, I can do that without flashing or modifying the phone in any way.
How? It's easy. I can boot my phone off a boot-image (and hence recovery-image too) hosted outside the phone. I can boot my phone from code hosted outside it. No hacking required. Absolutely none.
This is what a Nexus device is all about. It's all fully open. It does what you ask it. Even if it is retarded. Even if it is singing the Hello Kitty theme song while in the bootloader. Because the device is open. It's yours. It's yours to do exactly what you want with it.
The openness of this thing is amazing. For me, there is absolutely no other phone I would consider. Others might land at some other choice and that is perfectly fine too.
People returning this phone are probably doing it because they followed internet-hype and didn't research what they were actually buying.

If you think that sounds awesome, LTE is probably worth dumping. If you think "that sounds... like something I dont care about at all", then probably not.
Had the Verizon GN. Was surprised to find that I actually had 4g where I lived. Got ~35mbps down and ~7mbps up. With mild use, was finding it difficult to get the battery to last through the day.
Returned it, bought the unlocked GSM version, popped an at&t similar in, and now my battery lasts all day with almost twice as much use and 30% left at night. Pages load at roughly the same speed. Call quality is better (maybe just where I live, but the Verizon version was always a little "glitchy").
Just my experience with LTE and the nexus.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
I have both phones and love both, skyrocket gives me 2 days in one charge easily, gnex only about 10-14 hours with extended battery but love stock ics.
If you already have the skyrocket then stick with it, its a great phone, if you dont have neither, get the Gnex gsm.
For now, LTE is the future. I carry a spare battery if and when needed. Battery technology will always be playing catch up.

Worth it to swap from T-Mo SGS2

So someone messaged me about them willing to straight swap their Galaxy Nexus with my SGS2 (T-Mobile). Was wondering if it's worth it and what would be the advantages to me swapping (aside from ics). I've read about some issues with screen banding, cracked screens on the top left (or maybe it was right), and reboot issues. How common are these issues among devices and is there any thing else I should look out for when checking the phone out if I am to swap? Thanks in advance
Edit: Also how would you compare the build quality between the 2 for anyone who's used both?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
If someone is willing to straight swap you with no money on your end, you need to make sure theres not something wrong with their GN... they're taking a big hit swapping straight over.
If it is legit, I see no reason why you'd not take up that offer.
I agree with martonikaj, I would really be suspicious of someone making that deal. The GSM Galaxy Nexus still sales for around $600 on ebay whereas the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 is selling for $400. It's really a dumb trade on their part. The GNex is going to be update more times than the GS2. ICS will most likely be the final update the GS2 will see, whereas when the GNex is on Jellybean, GS2 owners will be waiting on someone to make a rom that hopefully works well enough. Also the T-Mobile GS2 will NOT (not sure about the other GS2's) be getting the wifi display update as the S3 Snapdragon is not compatible. Then there's the difference in resolution...I'll put it this way, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. These are just a few reasons to make the switch, there are others but I think you get the point.
yeah i would do this in an instant! i have a tmo galaxy s ii, and i bought the nexus. the S II is just sitting there. id take another nexus haha

Best thing is go to a Verizon store and feel one in hand. You will get a feel of how the GSM version is.
But as others stated if someone is doing a straight swap it sounds little fishy. If you can make sure it is in good condition then it's a no brainier for swapping.
No Verizon in Canada . Good idea though I can just pass by a Best Buy or Future Shop with a demo unit out to play with a bit and decide from there

Edit: Also how would you compare the build quality between the 2 for anyone who's used both?

I went from a TMO SGSII to the VZW Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus is better in every single regard, in many cases, much better.
The only way in which the TMO SGSII is better than the GSM Galaxy Nexus is that it theoretically offers better data speed (42mbps HSPA+ vs. 21mbps HSPA+). Obviously LTE on VZW crushes both.
Edit: I should add that I couldn't care less about the cameras, which I never use. There may be a slight difference there. And the Verizon Galaxy Nexus has 32gb of space -- I think the GSM one has only 16gb?
if you're trading GS II for GN without any money it's a steal.
id say do it
hell yeah....the minute i was able to sell my s2, i bought a nexus! so much more development and future proof with updates! we all know how samsung is with updates....and idk about anyone else, but the camera on the Nexus blows away the camera on the S2, in my opinion! it was always so blurry and just not crisp
no offence, but this is sound like what an iSheep will say about the iPhones, but in this case is a gSheep for the Nexus

there are all kind of prof showing otherwise over the net, you can google it up
No offense, but what evidence do you offer that its a sidegrade or a downgrade? Its easy to call people sheep, but quite another to provide evidence for your views.
Lol your asking allgamer for evidence? Lol prepare to feel dumb
Anywho, I would definitely trade in a heart beat, if it's legit.

I'm in the middle of a trade now in the MP to get a sgs2 BACK. I'll get the nexus again a couple months down the line. Both phones are high performers but i feel more content with the sgs2. It's just personal preference .I switch phones constantly so i won't regret it.

[Q] ?

Ok guys and gals, I know I have posted a question like this earlier just bare with me, because I am not really any good at decision making. So i can get the sprint Galaxy Nexus for 100$, is it worth it or should I wait or should I buy it because it's the latest Nexus? I see that Sense 4.0 and the Sony roms are not on the sprint Galaxy Nexus, are they planned to be? I really just want to know if you guys were eligible for an upgrade at this point in time would you buy this phone right now or get a different one? Thanks to begin with!!
got it even knowing the sgs3 and the evolte where right around the corner. Couldnt be happier. Bought it the first chance i could which was about two weeks after launch day.

Depends on your preferences.
The Galaxy Nexus is great if you:
1. want the Android that Google designed, free of modifications by phone manufacturers and carriers
2. want to be able to unlock the bootloader (and, subsequently, root) your phone fairly easily
On the other hand, the Galaxy Nexus has some drawbacks:
1. no removable storage
2. 5MP camera - not too good compared to some other phones
3. shorter battery life (because of the AMOLED screen)
4. and a few other minor issues
?

yeah but now all those things are out and im stumped and its kinda cheap for the phone. I wish people were into lg products, because the lg viper is 20 bucks and it beats the galaxy nexus in quadrant.
If you're looking for a deal, then I'd say yes. $100 isn't bad with an upgrade for a GNex. IF that isn't your main priority, even though it seems it is, then I may suggest checking out one of the aforementioned devices during the trial period (14d), more so the GSIII than than the EVO LTE.
I will say the new EVO is pretty sweet, have had some time with it as my buddy has it, and the battery has shown to be significantly better than the GNexus. The cameras do not compare, either. I'm not a big shooter, and even though I find myself taking some sweet pictures with the GNex ... it doesn't compare. Factors, though, of course, as it depends on usage and what you're looking for. Remains to be seen how the GSIII will compare, but I'm wanting to get my hands on it.
If it came down to the EVO LTE or the GNex, I still think I would go for the Nexus for multiple reasons; straight Google experience, SW keys, sexier device. Again, it remains to be seen how sweet that new Galaxy S is, but if you can hold out that long .... check it out for that week or two and determine what you feel to be the necessary decision.

... you place to much value on some stupid benchmark app. Does the lg viper run ICS? Let go of your own confinements then you shall truly be free.

thanks for the reply and I don't have the money for either of those atm as i am 14 but the only thing that is holding me back from going an buying right now is the camera isnt the greatest, but i dont take many pictures, no removable storage and a cheap 20$ LG viper beats it. The only reason im not getting the viper is there isnt much developer support and lg isnt very good on software updates.

Apparently comes with 4GB, expandable up to 32.

[Q] galaxy s3

Is anyone planning on switching to the galaxy s3 for virgin mobile? It looks pretty awesome, but it's a little expensive (although not as much as an unlocked phone). Any flaws with it?

I definitely want one, if there's a phone worth upgrading to from the One V than the s3 is it! The only other phone that has newer specs is the Samsung Victory, but it's chunky and meh when it comes to looks, plus the screen and camera aren't much of an upgrade, so screw that. Anyway, I'm never ever buying a phone from Virgin Mobile unless it's during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, I got screwed when I bought the Optimus V, Optimus Elite, and One V at close to retail when they ended up having them for $49.99 at every BF/CM sale, so just wait until then. I remember the s2 went from $299.99 to $199.99-239.99 around that time, so I wonder how much the s3 will be on special...
Edit: As far as the phone itself goes, the s3 is a fantastically balanced phone with no real drawbacks. I've never been a real fan of samsung's plastic and roundish designs, but they are pretty durable and you can take the back cover off easily for battery replacement and repairs. I'm also looking to upgrade my sd card to a fast 64gb capacity card since the s3 is able to use them. Anyway, the only real question is how well 4G LTE coverage will be by then...

hahaha well yeah! This is the first time I've actually considered buying a phone more expensive than $150 (my one v) but I don't know whether I can wait til November!!! But I probably will because my phone is still good... I just WANT this one!!! lol I didn't even know this, but there's 4g lte in my home town already! AND in the places I plan to move in december! That's good

Man, just thinking about a rooted s3, with a pure no nonsense JB ROM, modding and adding performance tweaks, not to mention the overclocking potential gets me drooling... :victory: I hope they give it a nice discount come November since I just bought a new laptop and 399.99 plus tax seems too steep for me at the moment.
My daughter has one..... She's not into rooting or deving but she's had it since it was available to virgin mobile and loves it, 4g is really iffy around here

Yeah I totally agree, $399 plus tax is a bit too pricey for a PHONE... I bought my car for just double that... LOL and I will be needing a car soon, so I'll have to save up for that, but I can't even imagine how wonderful the phone would be! lol

Even a stock samsung touchwiz gs3 would be great on performance I'm sure with the dual core 1.5 Ghz processor *drool* lol but are you in an area that's SUPPOSED to have good 4G? or no?
No... Not officially covered that's why it's iffy
I already switched a d got one with cricket its really amazing, totally glad I got it, its a huuuuuge improvement to be honest. rooted it day one, put carbon on and never looked back I wasn't happy with virgin's service which they could never fix, for some reason I would never get calls, just voice mails, over three phones and 100s of complaints. so I don't regret the carrier switch.

Oh yeah!? That's great! Do they have a lot of fully working roms? That's one thing that bothers me about the one v is that a lot of roms don't have Everything working except the sense based roms... which can be somewhat laggy... but still we have some amazing devs no offense to anyone!!
I have had cricket in the past, and I really didn't like them... maybe they've gotten better since then, but I think I will stick to virgin mobile
Just bought a gs2 it has basically the same exact specs and better design IMO. Same plastic and everything lmao and they both have jellybean so same software except sbeam .. And only 200$ right now

Hmmm... It would have definitely been an upgrade from the one v, but I wouldn't say it's on quite the same level... On virgins website it says it has android 4.0 and a 1.2 ghz dual core which is good but the 4g is wimax not LTE so that's an older slower technology plus the gs3 has an amoled display that's bigger and more vibrant so I'm just not sold but for 200 it's still way better than the one v so I really hope you like it

for the roms, instead of being gsm or cdma, they go by carrier so if you get the virgin you guys will all most likely start from scratch. its an amazing phone though, I'm on nodded touchwiz right now, but I've tried carbon, chameleon and pretty much all the others the cricket variant had to offer. most Roms are rock solid too.

look up hyperdrive rls14 that's the one most people use. but like I said, its by carrier, Sammy makes their handsets different for each carrier, so there won't be anything at all for virgin until people get it and start building for it.

Oh yeah that rom looks nice, I'm hoping it's simple to port from one carrier to ours and just make an mms fix zip for it or something, I was reading up a little to see what they have so far... but I really wish I could get it soon!!

right now, the verizon variant is almost identical to cricket and us cellular's so I'm thinking virgin's will fall in that cluster as well...Roms will still need to be ported, but it'll just be a tad easier.
