[Q] ? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Ok guys and gals, I know I have posted a question like this earlier just bare with me, because I am not really any good at decision making. So i can get the sprint Galaxy Nexus for 100$, is it worth it or should I wait or should I buy it because it's the latest Nexus? I see that Sense 4.0 and the Sony roms are not on the sprint Galaxy Nexus, are they planned to be? I really just want to know if you guys were eligible for an upgrade at this point in time would you buy this phone right now or get a different one? Thanks to begin with!!

got it even knowing the sgs3 and the evolte where right around the corner. Couldnt be happier. Bought it the first chance i could which was about two weeks after launch day.

Depends on your preferences.
The Galaxy Nexus is great if you:
1. want the Android that Google designed, free of modifications by phone manufacturers and carriers
2. want to be able to unlock the bootloader (and, subsequently, root) your phone fairly easily
On the other hand, the Galaxy Nexus has some drawbacks:
1. no removable storage
2. 5MP camera - not too good compared to some other phones
3. shorter battery life (because of the AMOLED screen)
4. and a few other minor issues

yeah but now all those things are out and im stumped and its kinda cheap for the phone. I wish people were into lg products, because the lg viper is 20 bucks and it beats the galaxy nexus in quadrant.

If you're looking for a deal, then I'd say yes. $100 isn't bad with an upgrade for a GNex. IF that isn't your main priority, even though it seems it is, then I may suggest checking out one of the aforementioned devices during the trial period (14d), more so the GSIII than than the EVO LTE.
I will say the new EVO is pretty sweet, have had some time with it as my buddy has it, and the battery has shown to be significantly better than the GNexus. The cameras do not compare, either. I'm not a big shooter, and even though I find myself taking some sweet pictures with the GNex ... it doesn't compare. Factors, though, of course, as it depends on usage and what you're looking for. Remains to be seen how the GSIII will compare, but I'm wanting to get my hands on it.
If it came down to the EVO LTE or the GNex, I still think I would go for the Nexus for multiple reasons; straight Google experience, SW keys, sexier device. Again, it remains to be seen how sweet that new Galaxy S is, but if you can hold out that long .... check it out for that week or two and determine what you feel to be the necessary decision.

... you place to much value on some stupid benchmark app. Does the lg viper run ICS? Let go of your own confinements then you shall truly be free.

thanks for the reply and I don't have the money for either of those atm as i am 14 but the only thing that is holding me back from going an buying right now is the camera isnt the greatest, but i dont take many pictures, no removable storage and a cheap 20$ LG viper beats it. The only reason im not getting the viper is there isnt much developer support and lg isnt very good on software updates.

The Nexus does. Roughly. Can't speak for the LG.

Apparently comes with 4GB, expandable up to 32.

Just ordered my SGS2 online!

Do you guys think I made the right choice of ordering the sgs2 instead of the Amaze?
How's dev so far for this phone? Any recommendations you guys can give as far rooting, custom rom & kernel?
So excited to get this new phone!

Yes you did make the right chose indeed! The development is kinda slow at the moment. People wasting so much time deciding between the amaze and sgsii. Once we get root, expect the development to kick off and some goodies!
It's all waiting on the root, then it's on!

YES! I'm loving it even without root, which I'm confident we will have within a week!
I'm planning on rooting, removing the bloat, adding google talk with video, unrooting, then leaving it alone for a month or so.

which SGS2 model did you order?
I just decided to read the reviews for the phone on t-mo.com (sort of the final step before I buy one after work today just to make sure there aren't any massive issues people have been reporting that I've missed) and I have to say, and I apologize allgamer because this is sort of off-topic, they were ****ing hilarious.
One guy claimed this phone should not be advertised as a non-LTE phone because it is a LTE device (huh? HSPA+ is definitely the same as LTE...waaaaait...). Another claimed that because there was no wifi calling, you couldn't surf the web on wifi! OH EM GEE GAIZ U CNT SUFR TEH WEBZ! Wait no...My Nexus S can't do Wifi calling and I can (and do) use it on WiFi all the time. Same with my Epic 4G. Same with my Evo 4G. Same with my MT3G. Same with my wife's Evo Shift 4G. Same with my Wife's Nexus S. Wow, I guess samsung must have really screwed the pooch or something to make it so that wifi calling was linked to all wifi use. Yikes! They better fix that soon! (That was sarcasm, FYI).
On a serious note though, I've done the reading, compared to the Amaze and watched the Galaxy Nexus launch and I'm not convinced any of them are or will be better than this phone on t-mo. The only real huge selling points of the GN (compared to the SGS2) are the HD screen and ICS; we'll get ICS and .15in diagonally larger isn't really that much so oh well. As for the Amaze? Its really only got better resolution which I couldn't find an issue with in store and I have pretty discerning eyes. Yes, I could see the difference but I couldn't see it making an impact on my daily life.
In summation, and as a non-owner of the SGS2 I'd have to tell the OP that yes, you did in fact make the right choice!

I am getting the Galaxy Nexus just because it has no buttons. To tell the truth our phone is bigger because the virtual buttons take of space on the screen. Other than that the galaxy nexus has no real selling factor besides icecream sandwich.
I just realized one thing I don't know about the S2...does it come with a mSD and if so what size is it?

If you have a Galaxy S2 (i9100) don't bother with the Galaxy Nexus

I sold my GS2 to get the GN and I'm not too happy with my choice.
No mass storage mode is a killer for me, now I can't transfer my media easily.
The camera is not in anyway better. In this case, more mega pixels does equate to better pictures.
No physical home button... oh how I miss it.
The lack of a microSD card slot is the finishing blow for me!
I loved my GS2, I wish I never sold it! ICS Is coming to the GS2 anyways.
Damned my gadget obsession!
Just my 2 cents.
Cool story bro.
I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.
didn't you know that GN doesn't have microSD slot, phisical/sensor buttons and have 5mp camera?
if you didn't know this before buying you must be not very clever man or you really suffering from some kind of obsession.

EXACTLY. All of these complaints (except camera, I guess that's subjective) were known before purchasing lol.
I have no idea why you would ever swap a Galaxy SII for the Galaxy Nexus. Especially that it has pretty much been confirmed that it's getting ICS. In fact, even to this day I would personally prefer the SII if I could get one. Unfortunately, Verizon thought it "wouldn't compete with the iPhone 4S enough" and decided to pass it up for the G-Nex. So I'm kinda stuck now. Not going to lie, I'm disappointed with this phone's hardware specs. Most of the other issues are due to ICS not being fully supported yet so I'll have to wait.
The only thing that is worth it is the screen.
Indeed I have an obsession, I want the latest and greatest.
Unfortunetly, this is not the greatest.
There's too much hype in the gadget world regarding the GN and I fell for it.
You people are so defensive. The OPs commentaries are perfectly valid, especially coming from his FIRST HAND experience.

Always do your research before spending your money. It's not worth the loss later on as I'm sure you understand now.
On one hand I really want the Galaxy Nexus, with it being the latest phone on the market and all the hype behind it, but reading posts from people like the OP just make me think if it's really worth it and should I just spend less money to get a SGS II instead....
It's going to sell, an average consumer just wants a sleek, cool and overhyped phone. Not a geek gadget, no offence.

If you have to think twice about using a pure Nexus device, then it isn't really meant for you.
I will only recommend the Galaxy Nexus to people new to Android, people who started off using Nexus devices and developers.
People coming from manufacturer android phones with pre-installed skins like HTC sense and Touch Wiz should probably stay away if they have no idea what stock Android is all about or if they are unwilling to understand stock Android.
I have a galaxy S2 right now....
the reason I'm moving to Galaxy nexus is because I want the same screen i had on the iphone 4. That alone would justify this and I like the fact that it all black in the front. Super sleek. Super clean.
The galaxy s2 has a better process, camera and all the extras. just like now the Galaxy S was a better than the Nexus S. ICS will come to the Galaxy S2 but it will take time and probably won't be out until march or april. If thats the case, I would rather downgrade my phone just to have to latest and greatests.
My friend has a epic 4g from sprint USA (galaxy S) they just got their gingerbread. They JUST GOT IT. if that happens to my galaxy s2 then i would rather move to a new phone. This fragmentation is really annoying.
does that mean you will sell ur GN OP lol??? i'll take it lmfao

Save yourself some money, get the European i9100 (GS2). It's more powerful and you will be far more pleased.
With the money you save, hold on to it for a few months and guaranteed, a much better phone will come out.

It's exactly that, a downgrade.
All the people posting about pure Google etc.... does it really matter? I was using stock android (well, Cyanogen) on my GS2 but from FIRST HAND experience it was not worth the move.
P.s, not going to sell it (yet) you never know, there maybe a way to get mass storage working or at least transfer files over.

I currently have a GS2 and will be changing to the GN when it releases here in the States (on VZW). Why? 720p screen, software buttons, and as close to a pure device as one can get anymore. The cons of the device really don't bother me, so I'll be more than happy with the Nexus.

720p screen - Valid point but not worth it if you have to sacrifice downgrades in other major hardware (CPU/GPU/Camera/etc...)
Software buttons - This is really considered an upgrade to you?
Pure Device - Software is port-able and moddable, this is a very moot point and I think is vastly overrated
My question is more of how you have a SII on Verizon right now? (unless you're planning to switch to Verizon now just to get the GN in which I have no comment then)

Would you buy your nexus again?

Hello...and no offense to you nexus owners, but I was really wanting the the SG3 but big red said that I am not eligible to keep my current unlimited plan if I get one because the 28th is the deadline and my upgrade is the 30th....(sorry had to vent a little).

Would you buy again?
How difficult to root?

I am on a droid X running miui from time to time I will tether to upload files from my tablet and I would not want to loose that...
Thanks and sorry for the rant...
Very happy with my Nexus, best phone I've ever owned. Love the stock experience.
I would buy it again in a heartbeat, but I'd love to have some kind of guarantee that I would win "the screen lottery" to avoid any magenta/yellow issues.
Unlocking and rooting are simple as fastbooting and adb pushing su; the easiest since that's what the Nexus phones are all about.
USB and Wifi tethering are still in the options with Stock, or you could flash whatever ROM you want. It's a Nexus!
The cat says it all. I love these threads

Definitely. Both that I've had are flawless, decent battery life, and the screen... not just the size, but the quality as well are gorgeous. The only phone I'd trade it for maybe is the One X, if Sense was removed, and it worked with 3/4G on T-Mobile.

Yes, for sure. very very pleased with this device.
i am happy with my nexus, i cant see how the One X or S3 be a big enough upgrade for me to buy eithe rone of them.
root and bootloader unlocking were easy, especially if you use the toolkit in the development forums =P. my grandma could have done it for me.
Definitely would buy the Nexus again. I also have a Vibrant running ICS. To be honest, I do want a Note and the SGS III, but the Gnex being so easy to root and flash makes it more fun. I do wish it had a microsd, but I really never needed more than 16 gig as I do not store music or vids.

Had it for about a week coming from a HTC sensation and have to yes yes yes I live this phone and would absolutely buy it again in fact I have a full upgrade in January (I bought this one full price from google) and I won't be upgrading then I probably won't upgrade till the next nexus comes out
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Agree^ however imo the sensation was an amazing phone. I loved the cam on it but where the nexus lacks in camera quality the screen size makes up for it. The gnex is a great phone. The way i see it is nexus phone is the big dog. All other phones try to be it. Except the hd2 that phone is just pure amazing.
I dont think we will ever see the "perfect phone"

Only thing that's missing on this phone is a top of the line camera. I came from an SGSII, and had no problem selling my Lumix LX3 as the SGSII was good enough for most things. HTC One X and SGSIII have even better cameras, but now with the Nexus I feel I might need to purchase a digital camera again. Low light is terrible.
^lKeeping in mind we are talking about phones here, not Nikon's
As for the gnex its my dream phone, I tryed my friends and it was amazing. The screens just a bit big, but ive never owned one so I can't criticize yet!

Yes I would buy it again because of the strong community for the device. And how easy it is to root it (my opinion) and the fact that it's first in line.
Thanks guys...I personally wish I could buy one straight from Google but they don't have it for Verizon. If I can't get someone at Verizon to bend a little bit I am going to the gnex in the next week or so.

Absolutely would buy it again. I would not consider buying another phone that is not pentaband gsm. So no sg3 for me. Only problem I thought I had was (incorrectly) thinking it had a weak radio. Turned out it wasn't the phone, it was the pretty battery cover I bought! D'oh! My only real issue is Citibank or google wallet, can't tell which, and even that was fine till I decided to flash a new rom (search before you flash if wallet is important to you). I can't comment on the camera, I use my phone to communicate only, it works well as a video phone, I'm no photographer so don't care otherwise.

Would I buy another Nexus? Of course!
Would I buy another Samsung product? Not sure..

Is it still worth it to buy GNEX

Hi, I am planning to replace my old phone to a new one.
I am currently using milestone xt720. I would like to know if it is still worth it to buy
Galaxy nexus or should I buy the newer ones. (Galaxy SII/SIII).
I considered GNEX as a replacement because the way I see it, there are so many developments going on here in its xda forum.
Are the new releases of GNEX phone better? or there are no differences?
Thanks, thats all i need to ask
It's worth it.

The phone is just awesome. If you're in for hardware, then the S3,but if you want a better software and hardware integration then the GNex, cuz it really is so much smoother now, the hardware doesn't even matter. And since it's a nexus, epic dev and updates all year round. If you do buy it, trust me, you're never gonna regret!

Roughly $300 these days for one.

Exactly. It's literally like a steal for that price, especially a phone like the GNex.

(Plus the fact that i get replies in just a matter of minutes, I can say the GNEX community is active )

I just bought one too. Can't beat it for $350. I came from Galaxy Note and I swore up and down it was the best phone ever until I got a pure nexus. Everything just work like it suppose to and with no lag at all. I will stick with the Nexus line from now on.
Yes. This is the best phone purchase I've made fwiw.

Came from HTC One X AT&T.
Trust me when I say this: The GNex GSM is exactly what google wants you to use with their services.
Everything else from Samsung, HTC, LG, etc is exactly what AT&T/Verizon/Sprint want you to use. As soon as you boot up and get a huge HTC or Samsung logo followed by a AT&T or Verizon logo, you know you've made the wrong decision.
Boot..
1) HTC logo with their stupid sound
2) AT&T logo with their stupid sound
3) WELCOME TO AT&T PLEASE USE THIS STUPID SERVICE THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR! ... or skip
4) WELCOME TO HTC PLEASE USE THIS STUPID SERVICE THAT GOOGLE ALREADY DOES BETTER! ... or skip
5) HERE ARE SOME MORE APPS THAT YOU DIDN'T INSTALL NOR CAN UNINSTALL!
You get the picture.
Stick with the unbranded: iPhone or Gnex
GNex is awesome phone, and you can't go wrong considering the price $350 and the software support. If the hardware matters more then go with the GSIII.

The hardware itself is 9 months old, but considering the device is $300 - $350, and you will run JB out the box. Hells yea it's worth it. Oh and yes, the community here is awesome, lots of friendly people and devs love working on a device as open as this.
Oh and last thing, I don't know about anyone else here but once Iv'e gone to a button-less device as the GNex, I can't see myself buying a phone with capacitive buttons now.
Came from nexus s , worth it ! .
The GNex is where it's at. Not only is it a pure Google phone, but you'll be first in line for all the latest and best custom ROMs and hacks. This phone is a developer's dream!

I'll give you another side of the argument...
If money is a concern, I say wait. Buy yourself a cheap android phone and get a $30/month tmobile plan to hold off until the next Nexus comes out. I don't know if you care about it, but it's probably going to be announced in a month or two at most three. It's highly likely it will be better than the galaxy nexus in most aspects.
I believe by waiting, in the long run you will save more money and will be able to afford the new nexus easier. Once it gets announced, I don't know if you will be able to resell the galaxy nexus for close to what you paid for it. So you might end up losing more money than necessary. But if cash is no concern, then yea buy a galaxy nexus now. Personally, I don't have tons of cash to throw around so I'm using the strategy I just explained.
I have SGS2 T989 currently and been thinking to switch to GNex because I don't care about TouchWiz and I really like the so-called pure Google experience . I want to check out JB OS but I'm having a hard time finding stores with GNex loaded with JB OS (Verizon has it, but it's still ICS I think). Anyone know which stores would have the demo unit with JB OS?
Not worth 350 with possibility of new nexus device. Don't see it arriving in next month or two. More like January.
Unfortunately the hardware won't be far ahead of what's already out. All nexus devices since ONE have been small steps ahead with major sacrifices in hardware. ( bad touch screen , lousy cameras , weak gpu) no manufacture has given AAA hardware effort for a nexus phone.
An s3 will be a smart choice with the built in community likely getting OS updates out much quicker than other phones.

Wait for new nexus or get SIII now?

My contract is up and my upgrade is now in full effect. I currently have the nexus s 4G and the nexus tablet so needless to say i am a fan of the nexus line. That being said my contract is up and i am really looking at getting the SIII. Wanted to get feedback from this forum on whether or not they still love their phone after being out for several months yet or do you think it is worth waiting (for who nows how long, probably end of this year) for google to release the new nexus phone? what do you like about the SIII, what do you not like? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.
Buy mine for a little more than you could get it for with your upgrade and keep your upgrade for the next Nexus when you call sell off the S3. Problem solved

I wanted to hold out for the next Nexus, but after seeing the S3 and its specs I couldn't wait any longer. Granted, I was sick of the horrid camera on my EVO 3D, but I still feel like whatever the Nexus has for specs will be pretty comparable to the S3. If you have more willpower than I do, it might be worth waiting. If you can't wait, the S3 is fantastic. (Ignore my posts about battery life - I'm pretty sure I'm at fault and I haven't figured out why. )

It looks like you're selling yours for $450 though... How is that "a little more than you could get it for with your upgrade"?
Depends on whether you want a Motorola nexus or not. After the lawsuit Samsung lost, they may not be making another mobile device.

Its way cheaper than walking in and buying it off contract.
Not to mention Im throwing in an SD card and it has an Invisible Shield HD on it. You couldnt walk out of Best Buy much under $300 after you add in tax. Hell, Ill pay the shipping at $450.00.

So you think Samsung will stop making mobile phones because of this? Good Lord, I hope you're wrong, that seems a bit much.
But to the OP, if you wait it out, your next question will be "get nexus now or wait for SGS IV" assuming what KB said isn't true of course.

right.... so the number 1 selling cellphone company in the world is going to stop because of Apple.. The only thing I see coming from this is Samsung will stop help making the Iphone 6 when it comes out next year (Not the Iphone 5 coming in a few weeks).. Which I think has already been confirmed..
If you're willing to wait till the next years IO ( or possibly Q3/4 2013) then sure.

You are are about as clueless as your name sounds...wake up get informed before making stupid remarks like this. The only issue that Samsung as is with a few infringements on things like snap back pinch to zoom, but all other issues were in regards to the 1st Galaxy S and trade dress, and out right copy infringement. People like you should never speak before getting your facts straight.

Calm down man. I guess I should have put some smileys. My comment was purely sarcastic in the sense of being disgusted in the outcome of the lawsuit. Opinion is opinion, not fact. I sincerely hope it doesn't come to this but as I read somewhere, it wouldn't hurt Samsung to stop making cell devices as their profits can come from their many other products.

the S III is a good phone. matter of fact it's a really, really good phone but nothing gets the development that a nexus gets. chances are the new nexus will have specs equal to or slightly better than the S III. you could have the best of both worlds by waiting.
Wait. Although this phone is still new to date there isn't much AOSP development. With out that this phone is nice but.... TouchWiz other than bells and whistles makes this phone, slow. I have had cm10 and aokp on this device and it's a totally different animal. I guess I understand why people like TouchWiz but it really takes away from this phones true potential. Just really depends on whether you want a phone based on performance or one based on glitz and glam. I would not be surprised to see a quad core in the next nexus with the 4G lte chips becoming available. Something else to consider.

The nice thing about TW phones is you have the choice...you can always put AOSP on here, but you couldn't go vice versa on a Nexus phone. If you despise TW that much, then you wouldn't want it anyway, but there's no question the Galaxy series phones ALWAYS have the best hardware when made. You can always change software, but you can't really change the hardware.
The biggest question in my mind is will the next Nexus have the new A15 processor. If it does, it'll be a mighty big upgrade. If not, it won't be that impressive from a hardware standpoint, maybe up to par with what the SIII already has, but six months later.
New processor tech like this only comes out maybe once every three or so years I believe. If the Nexus has a dual A15, it'll smoke anything else out without a shadow of a doubt. Then I think some people, myself included, would be a little bummed about getting the SIII when we did. Heck, I had my upgrade for a year and a half before I finally got the SIII, and I'm glad I did. This phone is freaking awesome, but my only disappointment was it didn't come with the A15.
The other thing is will they release a new Nexus without a new OS? I don't think they can possibly release another OS this fall. I think like 60 some percent of phones are still running Gingerbread which would mean those phones are running three version old software. Not exactly an ideal situation for Google in my opinion.

Remember there's hundreds of android products around the world from high end to low end. These things simply just take time. Remember when froyo was the majority and gingerbread was the minority? Well look it now. And also alot of older phones just dont have the right processing power/hardware to run ics properly
