Running hot and buggy - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Okay so I will let you know the history of my phone before i start.
No water or falling dmg at all, I Have taken care of this thing like it was my baby.
I rooted the phone and put starburst ROM on my phone it ran good for a little while
but then decided to go to blazer rom. That rom was great and everything and ran amazing for months then 2 days ago I woke up to my phone with a purple tinted screen, frozen and pretty warm. So i took the battery out and it seemed to restart okay. (I charge it every night so it was charging when this happen)
The rest of the day I started having issues like battery drain, Screen not turning on unless i took battery out, heat, account Unsyncing, calls auto going to speaker, Message LED light not turning off, and more!
So I decided to go to Calkulin's E4GT to see if that would fix my issue. Its amazing rom and things seem to be working okay. But still having a issue with my phone heating up and the screen not turning on also the message red LED light would not go away....
I called sprint and was told to take it to a repair shop or i could get it replaced for $100 (which i am not doing) Will the repair shop be able to fix this? Do i need to put official back on my phone before i take it in? anything would help at this point (sorry ahead of time for spelling and size of this post)

I'd say use odin to bring it back to stock unrooted. If you are still having problems with it, then it's probably a hardware issue and will likely persist. However, my experience with people at sprint who are smart and actually know what they are doing either don't mind if you have it rooted or have rooted phones themselves. They have a machine that they plug it into and if it is rooted, it won't damage your phone, but it will give a whole lot of weird errors. Good luck!

Super Fast reply! thank you! I am so sad because Calkulin's E4GT is such an amazing ROM! I hate to lose it. Would they be able to replace the motherboard at the repair shop? because it seems like the device is overheating alot. No processing are running but mainly when its plugged in.

Definitely just take it in and see what they say .. if they find a problem Sprint repair center will fix/ replace it for you.

Well I took it to the sprint repair center today and the guy told me that it's due to my my hot spot service that i am suppose to be paying for.
I told him i don't even use that feature it just came with the ROM but he said he was sure this is what was causing the issue.
He said he could do a hard reset on my phone but other then that i am out of luck

That sounds like bull. Go back to completely stock and see if the problem persists. Of it does, take it back to Sprint, but try a different store.

Yeah, I gotta agree, if that was in fact the problem here, I doubt your phone would be the only one doing this stuff. Shoot, I actually use hot spot app and mine has never acted like that.

Yeah think the company told him to blame stuff on that because they are not getting my $30 a month for the hot spot feature. So far phone hasn't really been acting up just the red LED been staying on 24/7 but i went in to setting and disabled it.

Sorry for double posting just wanted to give you guys a update
Saturday my phone did the thing where the screen would not turn on.
I drove right to my sprint repair shop and sat down with a over weight female tech.
This was our convo
me: "Hi, My phone's screen is not turning on and the phone has been acting really weird when the screen is on.The last tech said
this was because it was rooted and the wifi hot spot THAT I DON'T USE made the battery over heat but the heat is clearly
coming from the top right as you can feel"
tech: "WEELLLL did you know i could refuse to look at the phone if its rooted according to our policy?"
me: "Well what time do you close, because I will unroot it and put stock back on it and bring it back within the hour"
tech: "please sign these papers to get a replacement......"
I left feeling really annoyed. It's nice having empty threats throw at you by ass hole techs who think they are the ****.
I do not want anything for nothing i pay for my service and use root for titanium backup. Blah well glad to get my replacement either way.

Broke my phone! Screen won't turn on [SOLVED]

Hey guys. So I went ahead and dropped my phone in the bathroom. The battery cover popped off and the battery shot out. Anyways, after putting that back in and turning the phone on the screen won't turn on. The phone does actually start up as my boot sound plays and all the capacitive buttons light up. Also the touchscreen still works as I can "feel" my way around and still call make calls using the launcherpro swipe shortcuts I set up and can answer calls and such. So really the only thing is that the screen never displays anything.
Anyways I don't have TEP (look how smart I am!) and am going to take it into the sprint store that does repairs around here tomorrow morning to see what can be done. What I'm asking is for thoughts on what happened and advice if my device is not fixable by sprint. Do you think that the LCD is busted or did I just jiggle something loose inside? I saw a teardown video of the phone but they stopped before getting to the screen so I don't know what it is like in there. Also should I odin it back to stock before taking it in?
Lastly if all that fails does anybody have thoughts on those "mail it to us and we'll fix your phone" sites? I've seen it range from $120-$190 to fix a screen for the epic which I would be willing to pay if these places are for real.
Thanks for listening to my problems!

The only thing I can say is $190 is not worth it,you can buy one on ebay (where I bought my last 3 phones) for around $150 now I'm sure, and you can still keep yours to make phone calls, and you will have all those extras for parts, battery, what ever...

I'd try to odin first, but did you try booting into cwm? If the screen works on there, then it may just be a corruption attack of sorts.
Took it into a sprint store this morning, 1 hour and $35 later had it up and running with a new lcd. Tech said that when he tested the LCD on its own it worked fine, but not when he put it back together. He just replaced it with a different one and I was on my way, no questions asked.
I had no idea about the pricing on repairs! For not already having TEP or being eligible to put TEP on my phone anymore, $35 to fix hardware problems is a ridiculous price. That's some good service!

Screen Wont turn on!!! Help!

My evo's screen started flickering earlier and then went completely off. I pulled the battery and the phone comes on, button lights work, i hear sound, i get calls but the screen wont turn on at all. Is there any way to fix this i am not under sprint TEP warranty and would really like to solve this issue asap.
i flashed cm7 7.0.2 this morning if that information helps. anyone?? PLEASE?!!!
Try taking out the battery, putting it back in and hold Volume down and power, see if it boots into recovery.
Nope. wont even boot into recovery. screen is completely unresponsive. any other suggestions?? i just called sprint and placed TEP on my account. when can i take it in since it was just placed on my account today??
You can take it in now, shouldn't matter. The only requirement they have is you be in the first 30 days of the device. I have even seen people in sprint stores suggest adding it right there to get a new phone and then telling the customer to call later and have it removed.

i actually got it to reboot in rcovery. (screen didnt turn on but i can read out the menus under a very bright light) i wiped EVERYTHING except the sdcard and now the phone wont turn on at all. the charging light wont even come on when connected to the charger. does this have to do me wiping the battery stats??
wow. threads like this annoy me. ROOTING YOUR PHONE HAS NOTHING to do with a hardware failure. if the phone is less than 1 year old. then it is covered under the warranty. you do NOT HAVE to pay a damn dime. don't let them tell you that. contact HTC directly and inform them that your backlight on the evo has failed. Let them know even when you restart it, the screen doesn't light up how it should. If they can't see the screen to see root, then all good. lol. but the fact is that root can't cause that issue. HOWEVER, SADLY. you won't have root again until they release the unlocked bootloader. sorry!
Btw, why the hell would you wipe the phone? WHY WOULD you wipe everything? lol. wow. take the battery out and charge it in a third party charging unit out of the phone. What is with people and wiping the battery stats? does ANYONE EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!?
Wipe ONLY IF you are sending it back to HTC so people don't get your personal information. and take the SDCard out and back it up and format it and put it back into the phone.
Bro chill the **** out will ya??? thanks for the 1st paragraph but **** u for the second. Comments like yours annoy the **** out of me, helpful with a bit of prick on the side. Anyway it was a defective battery causing the issue. I went to sprint ( almost got hustled by the technician who claimed my motherboard was damaged) purchased a new battery and voila!

[Q] Overheating

So, for the past month and a half, I've been having some serious overheating issues with my E4GT, whether I have it rooted and a custom ROM flashed, or running stock. It has now gotten to the point where the phone smells..funky, near the camera on the back. Now, Sprint labels the battery as the culprit...twice now, they just give me a new battery saying the old was swollen, and that it is what was causing it to overheat. Completely ignoring that I state it smells like fried parts. Now, the batteries were all normal in appearance, mind you, not a bit swollen. No water damage either. It gets almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. ..Yet, battery life actually isn't terrible, go figure. This overheating happens whether I am using the crap out of my phone, or just leaving it sit idle.
Any ideas what to do from here? It makes it almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable, especially if it happens when I make a call. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. I've made a habit of unplugging it when it says it's at a 100% charge, too.
I'm sick of Sprint shoving me aside every time I go there, which is three times now. So, if there are any ideas as to how I can get them to just replace the damn thing without spending 100 through insurance..lay it on me. I've searched the forums for a solution to this particular issue, no avail. Hell, if it takes purposely bricking for them to pay attention, then I'll do it, but that's on the back burner. Far far back.
I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing.
Apologies for the novel, guys and gals.
**...somehow the title ended up being just one word. Not sure how it got deleted. I blame cats. "Major overheating issue, getting the good ol' Sprint run-around.." <--should have been that.
Go to a different sprint store....they're being dicks, never had that issue at any sprint store in my area. You have a fault phone and it needs to be replaced.

I had the same problem and so did my woman. Do yourself a favor and download Calkulins battery saver E4GT ROM. I don't know how but it keeps the phone cooler. Seriously. Haven't had any over heating issues since. EL29 stock kernel always causes mine to heat up. Hope this helps
I've used that as well, but the thing still smells pretty bad whenever I use..well..anything. :/ I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing. I should add that to the initial post...

Do you have insurance? You could always just brick it to the point where all ya get is the blue led of death and bring it in and tell them the thing just suddenly went off on ya and when you tried to turn it on this is what happened.
Do NOT try to damage it using water because they have these stickers inside the phone and on the battery that change colors when they come in contact with water so sprint will know, and laugh in your face.
my phone also gets very hot like in 120 range
You could send it to Samsung under warranty, and when u go to sprint make sure its a corporate service center and not a 3rd party "authorized service center". When you go in don't mention overheating at first start off with "my phone smells funny, like burning plastic and when I pick it up I notice the screen is very warm/hot to the touch and sometimes has issues with the touch responsiveness" this should get their attention away from the battery and more towards the internal issues, more than likely its the SOC that is overheating if it's hottest near the camera area of the phone

[Q] So, I dropped my rooted phone.

UPDATE: Phone was replaced at the nearest service center free of charge, no questions asked. :highfive:
My phone took a fall today from about mid-chest height. I didn't think anything of it as it was in a case and the screen is unblemished, but a few minutes later I noticed it wouldn't turn on. I pulled the battery a few times, tried the three-finger salute while connected to power and it's showing no response. It does get a bit warm after a few minutes of having the battery in it, though. I'm pretty sure it's done for but if anyone has any suggestions for getting it to power up, I'm all ears!
In life, was obviously rooted and ran AOKP. In death, it's as beautiful as the day I bought it cosmetically speaking. No signs of liquid or physical abuse of any kind. Is it even worth it trying for the warranty replacement? "I woke up this morning and my phone won't power on, I dunno what happened?!?" Or should I not even bother and just take the $200 to the face for insurance to replace it? I'm just looking for some opinions. Thanks all! :highfive:

No blemishes and it doesnt power on?
WARRANTY
"I woke up this morning and my phone wont turn on."
-did you drop it or damage it?
"nope, take a look, not a scratch or mark on the moisture detector"
how can they not warranty it?
I'd try it. If it won't turn on at all, won't show anything on the screen, i seriously doubt they could hold the idea of it being rooted or using a custom ROM against you. Actually.... they can't even really use the idea of it being rooted against you, since rooting is legal per the DMCA.... so i think you'd be alright trying for a warranty replacement.
seriously, its not like they will send it to the forensics lab for deep analysis of the installed software
Ha. Thanks guys, I will try this on Tuesday as I've been stucking working overtime well past the time the stores close. I'll update in a couple days!
I bricked my old SGS2 while flashing CM9 wouldn't power open. Called in a replacement. As long as it doesn't turn shouldn't be a problem.

If all else fails, you should be able to flash stock back onto it even if you cant see the screen. If it heats up, I assume that it is powered on but you just cant see it. I would suggest using a USB dongle from ebay to force it into download mode and then Odin it back to stock. Even if this is not necessary, I would still suggest you get yourself one of the Usb Jigs to have around just in case in the future.
did you guys bought additonal monthly warranty from AT&T or is there a factory warranty from Samsung for 1 year period since purchased date?
Absolutely they will replace it. You don't even need acting skills for this trust me

You all were right, I brought it into the repair center and they didn't even ask questions about how it happened or anything. I was in and out in like 10 mins. Now..where's that no trip flash counter root thread? Lol I miss AOKP already.

[Q] How concerned should I be about my SGS3?

This is a bit of a long story but I need advice and I'm not sure where else to go. I have the phone rooted but the only thing I've done is install KT747.
I'm not sure if it's related but I'll open with that about 6 months ago I dropped it in the bathtub (dumb as hell I know), took it to the sprint store and BSed them about what happened. They opened it up, saw the water indicator/water, called me on my BS, dried it off and cleaned the contacts with rubbing alcohol and my phone came back.
Fast forward to Tuesday, at work with my phone plugged into my laptop it cut off and would simply not come back on. The samsung logo would come up and then the KT747 "Kernel Domination" screen for a moment but then it would cut off. The phone would be on for maybe 3 seconds total. Even if I tried to boot into recovery or even download mode the same thing would occur (I think one time I got it to show the flash count and all that jazz in download mode). As the water indicator will still show water damage and you can clearly tell I've rooted it I was worried I might be screwed out of a phone, but I thought I was screwed the last time I went to sprint so I left to go do that, half way between work and the sprint store my phone cut back on in my pocket. Over the next day and a half it had similar problems but eventually came back (quicker than the first time). And now it's been running well for 3 days.
I've been doing some research on google and I've seen something about a motherboard defect that can cause sudden death, but I think this might be the international S3. It's really hard to tell what's what. Also I saw someone say it could be a battery issue so I ordered a new one but I'm still concerned this might not be the issue.
It's working fine now but I'm in constant fear my phone will just die any moment now.

If it was working fine before you dropped it in the water, then that's probably the cause. I doubt it's sudden death syndrome if there were no signs of shutting on and off before you dropped it in the water.

But would I expect to see problems from water damage so long after the contact with water? I figured if there were going to be problems from the water it would have happened much quicker than this. Like I said the water damage was MONTHS ago.
Sounds like SDS power button failure. Very common on S3.
