Attn: Those with >5 hours on screen time - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I have never been able to get more than 4 hours on screen time. And I would like to get to the bottom of this. If you have any suggestions for me to add to this list that would help us get to the bottom of this fiasco please don't hesitate to post.
Those with more than 5 hours on screen time please post your setup here.

I think when I took the shot it was at 37 hours. Most of the screen on was from kindle though. Running Unnamed EL13 stock settings

I wish I was getting 20 hrs..

I don't have a screenshot right now to post but I get 5+ hours of display time. This is what I can tell you about my setup.
TNZ Blendz ROM ICS Version 2.5.3 EL26
Stock Repack EL26 kernel and radio
Using Tegrak to under volt -75 on internal -100 on core voltage -50 on GPU
I do mostly reading and tweaking on my phone. I play games here and there but when I do its games like Asphault and Dead Space. Depending on if I'm playing games alot I can get anywhere from 4-7 hours of display time.
Also as a side note I removed all of the screen state and voltage scripts from system/etc/init.d since I use Tegrak to do that for me and so there isnt any conflict.
Also forgot to include I normally stay at around 10% brightness unless I'm outside or in direct sunlight. I try to keep my screen turned down as much as possible.

Are you at 5 hours surfing the net on a weak 3g connection or 5 hours looking at a white background in airplane mode

Ive done a 3G radio test with screen off that died at 6.5 hours just to put against that question lol. Decent 3G usage will kill a phone long before a screen will unless I did it wrong. Epic amounts of playtime listening to music on phone maybe pretty good over wifi?
Ive yet to get this much screen time without killing the phone in the same amount of time. I cant say running Calkulin's has made any tremendous difference in my battery life given I keep the screen at 25% which is probably brighter than the auto brightness would after he modified it. Im just an abuser on everything else and normally I like my screen much brighter but can get away with less since I am mostly indoors.

This is my typical daily usage.
Probably about half and half is done on 3G and Wifi
Browse Tapatalk quite often
Read several articles on Google Currents "sync at least once a day"
Checking Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ often
Reading Reddit several times a day.
Emails
Texting, this is do alot of
Google Talk, again this is do alot of
Phone calls, not so much, maybe five calls a day.
Check market daily for updates, sometimes more depending on if apps are updated.
Sync all accounts in PageOnce at least once a day, sometimes more.
I'm sure I missed a few things but that's about the average daily use for me. I spend about 60% of my day on my phone. This thing is a lifeline for me and acts as a hub for my communications if that gives ya an idea of how I use it.
Edit. I will post a screenshot once the day is out. I've been flashing back and forth between CM7 and TNZ and now that I'm back on TNZ with a fresh setup I'm calibrating my battery. Once I get that done I will post some screenshots that may help you see my usages.

Ha! Sometimes when I feel like I am walking into a coffee shop filled with retired old men when I read replies in here.

But seriously, the power the display uses is based on brightness and, I am pretty sure, on what color is being displayed. those are the only ways to "under volt" the display.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

It can be undervolted at the kernel level as Glitch used to do that with his kernel for the mesmerize/fascinate. It helped a little but not tremendously. And you see absolutely correct as it requires more power to display say white vs black. That's why black wallpapers and inverted apps on amoled displays will help battery. This is the opposite for LCD. I find though that inverted apps like on Reddit and tapatalk make me turn up the brightness at times to be able to see easily which of course counters the savings on power. So I don't use them like that. It all depends on how one uses the phone. What I consider light usage may be heavy to you and so on. Everyone will have different results. But one thing that will always stay common is the display will use more juice than anything else on the phone normally.

sorry but, if i'm not wrong the "screen on" define how much you are actively using you device
Honestly, what you are syncing / connectivity won't affect your screen on time much. The Screen is just too battery hungry.
I did get 5+ hours of screen time with AOKP / james bond...but I cheated. Reading books, white text black background.

no i know that, but i just wanted to let everyone know what was set up on my phone. my idle is fine, but if i can increase my screen on time, it would be happy. over WIFI its perfect but using it on 3g, SUCKS it right down bad.
so i would like to see your screen on times, with rom/kernal combos. im on Francos latest now.i was on lean, but it seemed to drain faster
Still haven't got much over 2.5 hours, but I do make a lot of calls and usually my screen on time is more video streaming/gaming so I guess that factors in to the battery life a bit more. AOKP m4/Lean
Sorry, what was the question? the ROM part i understand but what is "Kernal" ?
It also depends on how you use the screen. I'm sure I could get 7 hours all in one shot, but am choked if I don't get 4+ hours over 2 days.
3/4G uses more power than wifi, so you should see more screen on time when connected to a wifi network than on data.
My favourite ROMs: CM9 /w it's stock kernel, or BAMF with Lean kernel. Each ROM has customizable auto-brightness levels; can have a big impact if you use auto frequently.
The below shots are 90% on wifi, the rest on data.

What's your signal strength when you're on data? Data + bad signal will drain you fast no matter what you do.

5 hours was mostly from XDA, games and web browsing. I am on a Toro GNex. I limit my syncs to every 15 min, clock 350/1200 hotplugged. And I frequently monitor my wake locks and per app battery drain to insure a healthy battery life and to make sure my device sleeps like a baby. Normally if I'm using the device throughout the day with 4g data on and no wifi, I get 3-4 hours.
***edit: I do have the 2150 mA extended battery. Its not much but it does give a small bump.

Lol, the system is obviously not resetting itself.....or it was kept on idle (doubtful)...or the dude messing with the phones internal clock. Either way, nice try.

This is mine. Mostly Wi-Fi, I keep my screen on auto brightness, that was with AOKP B27 and Imoseyon's v2.5.0 experimental kernel, 230-1200Mhz, HotplugX with the stock battery.
I'd say on average I get anywhere between 4 to 5 hours. I've never gone to 0 battery, usually plug it in around 8 or 9%. Screen is usually auto or 50%, playing games on and off, cruising the store looking for good apps. I also monitor for apps running and kill stray apps.
AOKP with FuguMod kernel.

12hours 45mins of screen on time. Believe it or not!

Here is the proof.
I am on InsertCoin 6.3.1 with bricked kernel.
My settings were
WiFi off, 3g off, Display Brightness Minimum.
I just used all the screen on time for reading a pdf file in ezpdf reader.
Just 20mins of voice call and 15 mins on XDA app through WiFi. Nothing else!
If you don't believe, try with these settings and report.
I am not trying to fool anyone. Just posting this to mention that our phone does have this power. No Offence please
Thanks to Baad for such a beautiful rom.

So you had a blankpage on your PDF reader app without touching the phone for 12 hours?
Seems abit pointless when on a stock Rom I ran the battery tester on full brightness for 1 hour and dropped to 92% thats 8% per hour.
100/8=12.5
My screen on time would've been 12h30m what's the big deal if I havnt used my phone...

Blank PDF? I never said that. Its a 350 page file, which I read for 12hours. Without touch the phone I don't think I can scroll 350pages
That's impressive! Must try this rom... 23 h with battery with 12 hour screen on... Absolutely flawless!
setting brightness is all well and good but if i'm outside then it would be unusable, nice times though
if the phone screen was just on and without touching we can get more than 12 hours on screen post your pdf viewer time please.
@ nikorette 12 hours + on low brightness i can believe but 12hours+ with full brightness i cannot, people struggle to get past 3-4 hours screen on time with brightness on full so i don't know how you came to that conclusion. Must of calculated wrong.

Battery Life for you Heavy Users

I know another battery life thread, but I want to know what battery life people get that are heavy users. What i mean by heavy is people that play games for an hour, watch videos, surf the web, music, download, calls, text. Things that would drain the battery quick and because the screen is on.
On a regular day I mostly text get about 1.5 hours of music and 2 hours of video/game. I don't play games all that much just watch videos during my breaks, surf the web allot and download small files. I have always kept WiFi and GPS enabled on all my android devices.
I had the SGS for 2 days and noticed it only lasts about 12 hours, my previous phone (hTC Raider) with the same usage would last about 14 - 16 hours.
What do you guys get? somewhat disappointed with the battery.
4 to 6 hrs screen time.

That's impressive I may have to check out that ROM. It funny how you guys get around 16 hours and i only get 12 I wonder what it is?
I'm starting to remove bloat and hopefully that will improve my battery, will post back at the end of the day.
Out of curiousity is everyone on a custom rom, is anyone on a stock rom and getting these numbers (I apologize if i missed this but i dont think i saw it). Im rooted but still stock on sprint and I am getting about 8 hours. I have about 4 gmail accounts sync, 4 groupme accounts sync, gps and wifi enabled. I typically lower my brightness unless im outside or in a hard to read area....any ideas? I was really ok with not trying custom roms but if i can double my battery life by doing so i might reconsider....I was on the OG Evo before and flashed like crazy to get better battery life but no matter what others said they got, I only got 5-6 hours on similar setup that i just mentioned.
I'm testing my phone to make sure it lasts me my heavy day. Coming from GNEX i have to make sure that it's worth $600 i just paid.
now i'm getting 5 hours of talk time + 3 hours screen time (auto) + 20-50 text/emails. this is with power saver setting without CPU max limit.
and at the end of day (8PM) i have around 18 hours on batt, and 20% left.
Hope that helps.
This was extreme usage. Audio constantly playing and tethering on most of the time.

Judging from the fact that he's on Blazer rom (I used to have a GSII), I'm assuming he's on sprint. Assuming he's on Sprint, I'm assuming he does not have LTE in his area yet. This could account for the huge difference in how long the phone lasts overall.
Being on AT&Ts LTE, I can get around 4 hours of on screen time and 15 hrs overall of medium use.
Here are mine. Mostly idle, lots of reading(Game of Thrones books, awweesome!), emails (all work related) and light gaming. 5% left after 20 hours, almost 4 1/2 hours screen time. I am running stock rom, rooted and I debloated a bit(few pre-installed apps, gmail, email, etc as I use other apps for those needs).
Uptime 5% left on battery.

Hot phone after switching kernel

First I like to point out that this is my first android phone, coming from Apple. So I'm fairly new to this phone moding thing.
Well as the tittle suggest, my phone feels kinda hot after
installing Faux's kernel. I when to sleep with the phone at about 90%~ And 45 mins on battery. Woke up 5 hrs later with battery at 24% and 4h 30 mins until empty. I know that I need to give it time for the system to rebuilt a cache for me to see true battery savings like many of you are posting.
Is this a common thing when switching from a stock kernel? Or will the phone always feels hot?
It shouldn't be running hot nor be draining that much idle, i'm assuming you have a rogue app. Look at your battery stats, your phone should only be awake while the screen is on, unless listening to music or something. If the awake bar is solid across that's no good. Means the phone is not entering sleep mode. Ironically mine just did this today lol, it happens from time to time. Try a simple reboot and then let the phone sit idle and see if it sleeps via the battery menu in settings. If it is, then good your set. If not, get better battery stats from the play store and it will tell you exactly what is running and keeping your phone awake.
Edit: here's a pic of my battery stats today where something went rogue and kept the phone awake, notice the solid awake bar until I rebooted and then it functioned properly where only awake with screen n, and a bit with the screen of as I was streaming pandora. This is what you do NOT want your battery stats to look like. Like I said, if it does, try a simple reboot

Edit 2: the bottom of the phone will feel a bit warm when being used, especially with high brightness, gps, downloading, games etc. This is normal as the cpu is located there. If it's hot or warm while idle, that's not the norm.

Well I was on the Faux's kernel, with the High on Android ROM. I reset everything back to stock ROM / stock kernal, facotry reset and the phone no longer feels hot. But my Play store is not connecting(guess when I flash the gapps it'll come back).
The ktoonz kernel was the first one i tried but it felt kinda laggy and was the reason why I switch to Faux's. Now I'm looking for another ICS ROM that is not all crazy(I liked how simple the High on Android was), and I guess I'll give Ktoonz a try.
What app is good to use with the Ktoonz kernel? Battery manage wise I like the GSM battery mod. I downloaded Better battery status but it never showed me anything on the screen(even after 15mins) like GSM did.
I used to run fauxs and my phone would run hot.. After a month there were no new updates and figure he stopped development.
Went to kt and couldn't be happier. Can oc more, under volt more my phone couldn't be faster and never overhears unless I'm playing a game for a whole.
Kt also is actively developing with a new release every 5-10 days and he is very active in troubleshooting

Not only was my phone overheating, but the battery was also draining like crazy. In about 30 mins of the phone just being idle I lost about 6-8% of the battery life.
So I switched to The Ariel ROM and the Ktoonz kernel. So far no problems. Going to see how battery life is on the default kernel settings before messing around with voltage. All I have changed so far is the I/O, the governor, and the screen off max mhz to 486

Don't be afraid to overclock or undervolt it either.. Kts kernel is legit.

Using the 9-23 build, LTE disabled on Bell JB leak LI3 (only options are GSM only or WCDMA only... I've tried both, both get me 2Mbps speed when LTE gets me 30Mbps in Kingston)..... my phone drains faster than it charges on a USB port, or in a car, and takes ALL night to get to get 100%.
I unplug, eat breakfast, and I'm down to 86% this morning with a piping hot phone. I can feel it through my work uniform.
Lame.
Very lame. Bell won't help. Samsung won't help.
Bell: Disable LTE, its a known issue.
Samsung: It has to do with Bells LTE towers. It's your provider, contact them.
I'm getting extremely frustrated.

I get these types of problems constantly with my S2 (Bell, completely stock). Recently I installed CPU Spy from the play store and low and behold the phone is not going to deep sleep. Sometimes the processor will lock at 1.2Ghz and pretty much burn a hole in my pocket. A reboot fixes it, temporarily.
I advise you to install CPU spy (free) and check out what the processor is doing over time. Could be a app causing the phone to do this as well

Custom Kernel - What do you say?

Hi everyone, for a long time i see ppl claiming their phone last longer due to a custom kernel.
Normally i read they saying "i could never make my phone lasting with 2hs screen on or lasting for 2 days".
Anyway, its obviously that this will depend 100% what ppl do with their phone accordingly to apps, widgets, syncing, etc.
For me, normally i have around 3 and a half hour screen on and around 1 day and a half to 2 days.
I do use WiFi and 3G alot... browsing, gaming, texting, etc.
My point is that i belive ppl have a placebo effect. Custom kernel will give you faster response, OC ability and other advantages.
What do you guys say?
Attached are some screenshot from my 100% stock phone.

I just believe some of the little tweaks devs do to a custom kernel do make a difference.
I bag 4h30m on my gnex regularly.
Yea I totally agree that stock performs just as well in the battery life department. All I care about is having root.

Your battery life won't really get better than that. I really agree that there's often a placebo effect in switching roms/kernels, i only use a different kernel for color settings volume boost via Francos app. Stick with stock though I'd say, but of course it's always nice to try out kernels, despite the placebo effect.
Speaking of which though, I'm performing a real life test seeing which governors on my kernel work best for battery life. I simply switch then lol at my screen on time and see if it's improved, I'm assuming hotplugx will win, so we'll see. Interactive is still a great balanced on though.

It made a difference for me personally, because I wasn't getting very good battery life at all with the stock kernel. The other tweaks were also a pretty good bonus.
You're getting pretty great battery life as is though, I wouldn't worry too much about changing to a custom kernel if you're consistently getting numbers like those.
Thanks everybody for the feedback. I guess we are all at the same page.
Cheers

Thank you for not just asking "what is best Kernal"

Battery life or not but performance of the phone definitely improves with custom kernels... Asphalt 7 use to lag a bit on stock JRO03C but after trying Franco kernel Milestone 6 no lag or reboots whatsoever..
In fact I have a placebo that custom kernels reduce battery life
Worth it for the small performance improvements alone but I do get a little better battery life.
Even a few percent better is better than nothing when you sit in a building with poor reception and your battery takes a hit from your phone having a low signal

Somehow i think the same! All my attemps with custom kernels drove me to less juice... but a hell of fastness..

Personally, I run trinity...
Mostly for it's colors but I did seem to go from 1 day to 2 days without charging after the switch (placebo...?)
My battery suddenly dropped from 15% to 0% on Milestone 6... Now I'm back on stock custom kernels are like 3rd party engine mods on a car..
I say Franco...

What mods have you done to your phone? I am running aokp build 4 with Franco kernel milestone 6 and I'm starting to see some good numbers too.

3+ hours screen on time, 12+ hours standby. I didn't think it was possible, my battery bad been draining pretty quickly. I think the key this time was that I was on WiFi all day.

no sync because i don't have the data to go syncing the whole day, auto brightness, 3g outside, wifi at home. Web browsing only, i don't play games on my phone, it's reserved for my computer.
Stock kernel, stock ROM. Turn off auto sync unless you are connected to a wifi hotspot. This will give you 3 hours screen on time and 12+ hours uptime. I have 3 email accounts set up, but they do not sync automatically. I manually check my email in the am, at lunch, and evening.
Stock kernel, unless you can't help but obsess about making your phone "fast". If you want fast, go into Development Options within Settings and turn off all animations, then install a launcher like Nova and turn animations to "faster than light".
I used to flash all kinds of mods on my phone and I realized that was ALL I did with my phone, tinker and troubleshoot it. I will only unlock and root my phone if we stop getting the latest OS updates. In the meantime, nothing is so wrong with the stock kernel and rom that should make you install Bob's OS. But you know, that's the beauty of Android. You can decide what you do with your phone. Hope my point of view makes you reconsider flashing any custom software.
