In addition to your average speed test speeds, could you please provide if your device is running a custom rom, radio version, and what city you live/operate in?
Thanks!
I'm running a Galaxy Nexus, and while I've heard of speeds up to 20mbs I've only been getting 2-6mbs and it's rather disappointing.
On my GNex I get 8-12 Mb down and 1.7Mb up. I'm on T-mobile in the Boston area. No custom ROMs, although it is rooted and I've manually updated up to ICL53F. I was only getting 750Kb with my N900 so I'm more than a little pleased.

That is what you get on average and sounds correct. May be if you are in very good coverage area, you may get 8-9 but on average what you are getting is pretty norm. And personally this is more than enough speed for streaming and browsing, but agree everyone has different needs.
It is highly unlikely to get 20 Mbps on tmobile or ATT hspa networks.

I have a friend who was running the Galaxy Skyrocket (SGSII branded for AT&T) who has "4G" in an area with 4G coverage and he boasted 20+mbs easily. I'm guessing since not many customers have access to 4G yet the networks don't have to share bandwidth and can be that quick. Is this true to how cell towers work?
It's just disappointing that T-Mobile's "4G" network is so slow and inconsistent, yet they don't have plans to upgrade their towers or change to different data service.

Skyrocket is an LTE device. Not HSPA+.
How is 6mbps disappointing?
Are you torrenting movies or something?
Webpages load fast on a solid H+ connection, I can't believe people aren't satisfied with HSPA+ speeds.
I get anywhere between 2.5 to 9mbps depending on where I am.
I've hit 10mbps in the bay area, but i average 4-6mbps. I'm on the $30 100-min prepaid plan. Stock 4.0.1

I'm dissapointed only because i've seen phones in tmobile stores reach 22-23 and mine gets around 4-5. very aggrivating to see that. but i'm fine with the speeds i'm getting for what i do, but it is annoying to see phones in the same location get better speeds.
however, my nexus one for the last year almost never got over 1.5 so this is a huge step up from that.
Around where I work near Long Beach, I only get 2-3mbps up and around 1 down.
Usually 7-8 down and 2 up in San Antonio, which is good enough for me

I agree. I was either getting the Galaxy Nexus or the Galaxy S II for T-Mobile. The GSII is really looking a lot better now. Way faster transfer speeds, better camera, and possibly a better processor.
I'm paying the same amount for data each month, I feel disappointed that the Galaxy Nexus can only get a fourth of what other phones on the same network are capable of.

the galaxy nexus still puts the GS2 to shame just because of ICS. I was the same, GS2 or GN, and honestly i don't regret my decision at all. Yes the GS2 gets better download, and has a better camera, but the GN is an overall better device just because of stock ICS. and there is no way of knowing when the GS2 will get ICS.
As far as the download speeds go, i have absolutly no proof of this, and tmonews has said that they know nothing. But i honestly think that tmobile does something to unknown devices to drop their speed. because if i can walk into a tmobile store and see 3 phones get 18-33Mbps, then the galaxy nexus should easily be hitting aroud 10-20, not 5.

Do you know for a fact that T-Mobile does this? Another interesting reason why i don't think tmobile does is because my dads Samsung Vibrant, which is capable of 7Mbps download, has never gotten over 3, even when my nexus one used to get 5. And my Galaxy Nexus continues to beat his by 1-2Mbps on average.

Hi so I know the Galaxy Nexus is only going to be using the 21mbps HSPA+, so anyone know what the average download speed is usually? ..maybe someone living in NYC ran some speedtests?
btw although ive heard multiple times that the nexus will have HSPA+ 21Mbps, but didnt google/samsung didnt they show a chart at the ICS unveiling that the nexus would go up to 42Mbps on HSPA+ ?
My 5 mbps might be your 2mbps. Locations will vary, as will all the other factors. And no, 21mbps max for the modem inside your phone. Cant exceed that.

Well living in amajor city, with great coverage, what kind of speeds can I expect? I'm hoping for at least 10mbps during low congestion and at least a reliable 4mbps during peak hours.
But yeah there was a chart at the ics unveiling that showed the nexus using HSPA+ 42mbps. Maybe the USA gsm model will be able to take advantage of the high end tmo and att 4g networks like the TMo SGS2 can
Sent from the parietal lobe of your cerebral cortex.
You can't expect anything. The phone isn't what determines the speed, the network does. You could get different speeds on different sides of the street with the same phone and same network.
You shouldn't expect this phone to give you any faster/slower speed than another HSPA+ phone on T-mobile in the same location. You'll have to see for yourself.
The current version of the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus is 21mbps. You won't see real-world 21mbps on T-mobile any time soon, so don't worry about it not being a 42mbps modem lol.

Well of course if the phone only has an HSPA+ 21mbps radio, it can't go faster than that....
And FWIW I don't think AT&T has anything more than 21mbps deployed widely. Most areas are still on 14.4mbps, or even 7mbps HSPA.
I am in Minneapolis right by 4g towers and I only get 5 mbps download on my T-Mobile galaxy s2 (42mbps) so those numbers mean absolutely nothing. You will never even hit the basic 14.4

Like we've said, that's your experience with your area and your phone. I have a G2 (which as 14.4mbps HSPA+) and I can easily pull 10mbps down. Others have reported pulling upwards of 15mbps on various HSPA+ devices. Its definitely possible, but not something that people can come to expect as "normal" speeds.
My nexus s is theoretically capable of 7 mbit. I get anywhere from 1 to mid 4's usually. I'll take whatever 21mbit support nets. I would be tickled pink if it got 5-10 consistently.

It is confirmed. All that picture is showing is that LTE's theoretical speeds are higher than HSPA+ 42mbps theoretical speeds.
All we know right now is that there are 2 versions to be released. 1 has CDMA/LTE, and 1 has GSM/HSPA+ 21.

I'm coming from HSPA+ speeds on T-Mobile, so I was wondering if EVDO speeds on Sprint are supposed to be this slow? EVDO should be capable of at least 1 Mbps.
I'm consistently getting less than 300 kbps download, so are Sprint's EVDO speeds really closer to EDGE than 3G?

Honestly, sprint is just awful in some areas. I'm okay with it because I pay a lot less and usually have wifi anyway, but yea, the service is just pathetic.
In LA, I regularly get 5-50 kb/s download and upload with 3g. If I'm lucky, I'll get around 300--this happens maybe 1/10 days. This is in a flat, well populated area of Los Angeles, not a boonie by any means. It's really disappointing.
4g, when it (rarely) works, is also way slower than I had hoped for... maybe 1.8 down, 200 up.
Funny thing about unlimited data is that with crap speeds like this, I could probably download all month long and not reach the limit of other providers...
I am occasionally able to hit 1000 kbps up and down but at my house it's normally about 300 kbps each. I had 4G today and it was a pitiful 500 kbps down and 50 kbps up with a ping of 500. Be glad you have data at all...

It's true. Sprint really is just that awful. Sprint's "3G" is slower than AT&T's 2G. I'm still happier than I was with AT&T, though, since I always have some kind of data signal on Sprint. I might be roaming, and I might get only 5kbps down, but at least I have something. On AT&T I would frequently have ZERO signal and my phone was a worthless oversized paperweight.
Sitting in my own living room, where I have 5 full bars of Sprint 3G signal, I have similar speed to what you posted. Yours might be a bit faster, actually. This is completely normal average speed -- I am fairly certain that Sprint is NOT doing these "network vision" upgrades in east Texas anytime soon, if ever. Contrast that with Verizon -- my buddy was sitting right next to me with maxed out LTE signal, pulling 30mbps on the same speed test. That's faster than my Roadrunner Elite. He then dropped to Verizon 3G and got about 5mbps down. On both tests, his ping was <100ms and mine was >500ms.
I firmly believe that the only reason Sprint still offers "unlimited" data is that there is no need for a cap -- you are limited directly by the speed of your connection and you cannot reasonably even come close to 5GB of data usage in a month. Unless you have consistent Wimax signal, which I estimate maybe 1% of their subscribers have.

tmobile seems to want to have it both ways. they call their hspa+ 4g, but then throw it in to comparisons against other carriers 3g.
le boo.
from the article... T-Mobile's HSPA+ 21 service won in the 3G bracket of our study, and the company's high-end HSPA+ 42 service competed reasonably well with other providers' 4G service.
3g speeds are poor in some areas but recently have seen a slight improvement in my area. I'm hoping the network vision upgrades will help like they say it will.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Obviously there is no credibility to that article. There are several places around Daytona that I get over 1Mbs on 3G. I can just as easily measure ATT's 4G in my area to show it slower than Sprint's 3G. Most of the time I have to toggle airplane mode on the stupid ATT phone from work just to get it to load my work screen.
Different areas have different speeds... I get 1.5-2 mbps on 3g.... of course about 2 months ago I was only getting .30 mbps on 3g... 4g is super fast though. Lol
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I had been using the EL30 modem for quite some time and 3G speeds were horrid around the Chicago suburbs. Like bad bad. If I wasn't on 4G, I didn't even want to use my phone for anything data related.
I know NV is being deployed around this area right now, but I recently switched to the FC09 modem, and it's a night and day difference. I used to get around 0.1Mbps if I was luckly. Lately, since the switch, I've been getting more closer to 0.8-1.0Mbps which I'm quite happy with considering it's 3G.
4G I usually pull around 5-7Mbps down (but have hit 10 a few times; that's a full 1MBps down) and I usually cap it at the 1.5MBps up. That's faster than my wifi at home through AT&T UVerse.
Average Sprint 3G data speeds decreased from 2011 to 2012. Maybe because of the influx of iPhone customers?
Welcome to Sprint. Where the 3G is 2G, and the 4G is 3G.

I don't know if this is a question or more of a poll...
I think I'm getting horrible 3G speeds here in Austin, TX. It also seems like I'm being capped. When I have full bars, speedtest always shows around a 3Mbps down and 1 Mbps up transfer speeds. I've tested this in many places around North Austin / Round Rock.
What speeds are others getting?
Could my sim card or data plan need tweaking from AT&T? I ask this because I was previously on a Galaxy Note with LTE and they had to switch me to a LTE plan at the time. Outside where I work, the LTE signal strength is very strong and I've gotten amazing speeds with the Note. But with the Nexus, I get the 3/1 speeds.
Any ideas?

I live in Bastrop, like 30 miles east of Austin, and am getting about 2.5-3 down and .4-1.2 up. If you're on the smartphone plan, I'm assuming you're using the "phone" apn? Also, you're aware that you can get unlimited hspa with the non smartphone plan formerly known as media net.
Who knows this could be purely speculation but let's say AT&T already has your imei number you could be automatically bumped to the same smartphone data plan if you attempt to use the dumb phone plan.
I am unsure how quick AT&T is figuring this stuff out. I had an AT&T GS2 and switched to a dumb flip phone then bought a GNex, took the sim card out of the dumb one and transplanted into the GNex and boom, unlimited data and texting for $30 a month.
I'm already on an unlimited smartphone plan. I chatted with AT&T support and there are currently no restrictions on my data plan. He also switch IMEI from the Note to the Nexus and moved me from a LTE plan to 3G plan. Data speeds remain the same.
I wonder if anyone with a GSM Nexus in Austin is able to get > 3Mbps...
Try the phone apn?

those speeds are normal for a 3G smartphone. Even with HSPA+. Remember, the Unlocked Nexus isn't LTE.

You are on a SGS2 with HSPA+? Which city are you in?
Try testing with actual downloads instead of speed test sites. My speed test (I'm in northern Colorado) always tells me about 3Mb/s down 1Mb/s up too, but on actual downloads and manual tests, I hit 8-10 Mb/s even in kind of rural areas.
I'm in Indiana and get around 3-4mbit down and 1-1.5mbit up. The fastest ive seen once is 7mbit down.

I remember with the captivate, the speeds would vary widely depending on which part of town I was in. But with the Nexus, it just seems very artificial to hit right around 3 down / 1 up every time. Almost like AT&T is capping it similar to what they did to the captivate. The modem AT&T put on the captivate was throttled for whatever reason but flashing an international modem removed it.

ATT uses QoS to determine which devices on their network receive priority as well. Iphones receive the most for cell phones of course.

Yeah. I had to send my Gnex in for service. Only got to use it for 17 days
Harbor Springs Michigan
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I am wondering on this myself. I bought my gnex from google play, got it and noticed that the data rates are pretty steady at around 2.5 - 3.5 max down, and .9 - 1.2 up. The gnex has a 21Mbit HSPA+ radio in it, so in theory it should accept whatever AT&T can push to it. However, I came from an Atrix 2, and can vouch for the fact that the Atrix 2 when using the PTA APN on HSPA+ (no LTE for about 200 miles where I'm at) will download consistently between 7 - 9 Mbit... Same server on speediest.net, same APN, same place, the signal is within 1dBm of each other.
Because I have found no base band that can change this, nor any APN setting I am starting to believe that if AT&T gets an IMEI of a phone that it doesnt recognize, they will throttle it.
Any one else have any insight? 3.5Mbit is plenty, but I'd like to get the same speeds as what I consider a lesser device.
If I could find a way to change the IMEI I'd test this theory.
^^^ Suprisingly, Its not att at all. Ask anyone on these forums, samsung has notoriously bad radios. Signal and cell strength just are not that great. And you can you can especially feel the difference coming from a motorola device. They have the strongest radios of all the major oems by far. No one even comes close.

Thanks for this update. just saw it. It's frustrating knowing our phones could do so much better.
I live in Denver and this is my first 4G phone but I don't get 4G anywhere when my dad who has a Nexus gets it. Is it because this is an LTE phone? Do I have to wait for LTE towers? I can't use regular 4G in the mean time?
You have to wait for LTE. Denver will be a while. A year +.

I believe the nexus is wimax 4g. Which is ok, but once lte gets some steam and all the switches get turned on it should blow wimax or if the water I'm terms of speed.
And once Sprint turns their old Nextel network to the “new“ Sprint network we should get better service and building penetration.

The Galaxy Nexus is an LTE device. If that phone is getting a 4G signal then your S3 should as well.

Yeah. Both Sprint. His phone is maybe two years old now. The Nexus with the curvy screen. But that might not help because I can't remember if they all have that.

That means he has the old Nexus S 4G, which uses Sprint's now-legacy Wimax standard and calls that 4G. Your GS3 does not handle Wimax, which will be phased out, but rather the new LTE 4G.
But Sprint's LTE network is very new, and has only been launched in a few cities so far. And according to the running schedule at S4GRU.com, Denver is not in line for LTE service for many months.
Mctrollington, im in denver/aurora and might get the sg3 but not sure how sprint service is without wimax as i have nan epic 4g? Are u getting decent speeds on 3g?

I'm in the Denver area also, and just replaced a wimax Epic 4G with the SGS3. Personally I found wimax spotty at best. When it worked I got something like 2 or 3 mb downloads (not that great) but you had to be in just the right spot to get a decent wimax signal.
With the SGS3 using 3G I'm getting between 0.5 and 1.5 mb downloads (much better than I used to with the Epic), which is certainly tolerable unless you plan on downloading movies or doing heavy tethering. Again, it depends on the what cell site you are connected to and how many bars you have. Sprint's Network Vision upgrades are improving the data capacity of their 3G sites, and that is going on right now even before the LTE install.
I would say if 4G data speeds are important to you, try to hang on as long as you can before you upgrade. In my case my old Epic was getting pretty beat up and the SGS3 kept calling my name. I don't miss wimax one bit.
Oh, and the stock ICS experience with the SGS3 is WAY smoother and more polished than any ICS rom on the Epic ever was. Nothing like having gobs of ram and 16 megs of app storage built in to make things hum right along.

That's good advice in general. I'm in Austin, and I happen to get decent Wimax coverage in my office. So I held on with my Epic for a bit before biting on the GS3 recently.
But LTE service is supposed to come here pretty soon, and it seemed like fun to search for service and test it even before launch. For an ordinary user with good Wimax service today and no early prospect of LTE, I would not recommend the GS3 today unless you also choose to jump carriers. (Which raises other issues of price, data caps, etc.)

That's basically what's up in the Denver Area. Downtown gets a little faster. I am not often in Aurora but I think it's similar.
When I'm in Littleton I get absolutely no Sprint Network. It's all roaming.
I typically use WiFi. My 3G use is for tweeting, RTD navigation and a little Facebook. I have no problems or complaints with those.

I live in Orange Country, California. There's Wimax blanketing the whole county. I love it.
Unfortunately, no LTE yet. ETA mid-next-year.
I, recently, upgraded to the S3. I tried it out for more than a week. I love the phone with all its bells and whistles. However, because there's no LTE in my area, I was connecting to the 3G. And, it's horridly SLOW.
So, I decided to switch back to my S2 Epic Touch and take advantage of the Wimax speed until LTE comes to my area.
Am I crazy? I'm wondering if anybody else have had the same experience.
You're not crazy at all. I'm currently in Orange County too, specifically Orange/Garden Grove. I love the 4G at my work office. My 4G pulls 8mbps down, inside the building. But LTE rollouts in OC shouldn't take much longer, I'll be ready to buy a Galaxy Nexus or S3 when it does.

Yeah, me no loco!
I really like the current generation of phones. For instance, the EVO 4G LTE has one of the best camera. The aperture is F2.0. Wow! It's awesome for me, because I frequently take pictures of my little daughter. But, that too, I quickly returned, because I couldn't stand the horrid 3G speed.
Yupz, I'm also in Orange County enjoying great 4G WiMax speeds. Not gonna upgrade to an LTE phone until LTE actually gets here.
I Live in craptastic Oklahoma with no 4G I however visited Orange County a while back and was shocked at how amazing the 4G was. At most places it proved faster than the wifi I could use. Can't say the same for a recent trip to St Louis.
Funny such big cities have to wait on LTE, mine will be live by Xmas time and I'm in the sticks. But mines included in like a 1/4 state upgrade covering about 4 major cities and 20 smaller cities. I'm just trying to decide what to blow my upgrade on

If you live in a Wimax area with no lte, there is no reason to upgrade. Its the reason sprint is still supporting this phone I think.

Frankly, if Wimax and LTE is not available in your area and their 3G is your only avenue, i wouldn't recommend Sprint at all. "Unlimited" data is irrelevant if you're speeding along at a horrid rate. Smartphones need a decent network connection to function at all.
Don't get me wrong, I love Sprint. Their customer service is great. You can get a live person (from USA) customer service within 30 second when calling in. And, their online customer service chat is fantastic too.

It's still a great phone. They might just keep selling it until NV is fully rolled out.
Samsung will keep supporting this phone with software updates until it reaches it's end of life age of 18 months. I would hope they keep software updates coming until the 24 month mark.

I can probably see us getting key lime prime or whatever android upgrade is coming out next. There's literally no reason we can't update if it's not a major update... If it is a major update then we'll probably get a value pack update like the OG SGS if they decide to not give us the full update.
Anyways... I've been saying this since forever but really.
If you're in a non-lte area with wimax and LTE deployment is not coming within 6 months then stick with your current wimax phones.
If you're in a wimax area or non wimax area with LTE coming within 6 months then update when you start seeing NV upgrades or increased 3g speeds (3g speeds will increase before LTE goes live) as LTE should come relatively soon as 3g speeds indicate fiber or microwave backhaul.
If you're on the fringe of Sprint service and get ****e coverage/service then switch to another carrier and come back in a year or two where sprint deploys LTE 800mhz and fills up all those holes.

Being a sponsor at www.s4gru.com gives you privy to a lot of information including estimated launch dates, current progress of upgrades, location of said upgrades, and knowledge on what network vision actually is.
All markets are being shuffled thanks to the SoftBank investment in sprint. There is really no more set dates nor time frames anymore. In fact, Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, and all the other vendors and subcontractors are moving all over areas regardless of market boundaries. Most work is being done in out NE, East, South, Gulf, texas & surrounding areas along with steady progress in Los Angeles (and surrounding counties) and the San Francisco Bay area.
