Okay so I'm thinking about getting it switching from my galaxy s2. Well I went to the att store today. Why did it lagg so bad. I even restarted it and still lag. Expseically in the browser! Went to xda full website and holly crap zooming in and out was a pain! Then on my galaxy s2 it was smooth with no lag at all. Is it really that slow

keep your s2. simple & done.
It is not as laggy as in the store but its not going to be as buttery smooth as your galaxy S2.
I'm finding the same... The only chance you got is custom roms and kernels. That if we can get CWM going.. honestly I'm thinking of returning this for the nexus...
"Lag" is a really subjective term. Are we talking because it wasn't instantaneous therefore it lagged, or are we talking about it took a second? 3 seconds?
The GS2 has an 800x480 screen resolution vs. the Nitro's 1280x720 so it's doing that much more work to draw the screen. Have you been to the XDA site on your S2 before, if so that means your browser probably cached the site, whereas the Nitro has the initial load lag...Assuming you were using the exact same stock browsers as well?
Don't get me wrong, there's general agreement that the Nitro has lag, but there's also a general agreement that it has a LOT to do with the AT&T bloat and with some tweaking it can be mostly remedied.
As Namuna said, there are a lot of factors involved. I, for one, have no idea how the original nitro in the AT&T store runs. The second I got it, I rooted it and did a factory reset, and I have zero complaints about lag. I also go to the full xda site on my phone (I loathe all mobile versions of websites), and I have no complaints with lag. Scrolling around up and down, zooming in and out may not always be buttery smooth (mostly it is, but sometimes, zooming in and out can drop the frame rate to about 15/s while zooming), but I never experience a delay in scrolling/zooming, so I can't really call it lag. Maybe stutter.

Okay another? Why is it that ppl do a factory reset on a new phone? I mean when I got my s2 I rooted it and loaded a rom so i never tested the difference. But why reset it though?

Could very well be a placebo. Could be some remnants of factory "crud" that gets cleared out only after a factory reset. I don't think you'll get any argument from anyone that it doesn't make any sense why this helps, but there's plenty enough folks that have done it (myself included) and will say it indeed makes a difference.

If you don't mind some slight stutter here and there and don't need to run the latest and greatest looking games, definitely go with the Nitro.
The screen is GORGEOUS
Writing / reading email is a joy on this device.
Just to note, I'm pretty sure all of us here have custom launchers now. The default launcher is really slow, but Go launcher / Launcher Pro / ADW Launcher are pretty snappy.
I'm no Android expert, but with the Adreno 220 the Nitro should be able to run the latest and greatest looking games, right? Anyway, if you browse the web a lot and e-mail then pick this phone.
Yea I don't realty game. Just apps email and lots of web. Don't hate me for what I'm gonna ask. What about tethering? Can I tether on the stock rom while rooted? Cause this is a must. I have the unlimited plan. But 2 ddays out of the week I'm at a friends that has Hughesnet which is horrible to use. I only use about 100 MB during those 2 ddays so i don't abuse it

The Adreno 220 is great, and so is the 1.5Ghz S3, but games aren't optimized for this resolution, or the current software that's running on the phone. I'm sure we will see a performance increase once we get ICS.
What abouth tethering

Tethering is possible without even rooting, but you'll have to install a 3rd party app on your phone and a program on your computer for what I do. I use PDAnet.
So software lag is not to bad compaired to the one in the store. Done root and factory reset and froze loads of apps. But typing and texting isbkinda horrid. I can be typing and sometimes it will stop and freeze while I'm typing then like a sec or 2 it will then type it. I have this issue when just testing :/ but I do love thebscreen

Something to keep in mind is that HTC Vivid uses the same CPU (the Vivid is clocked down to 1.2 GHz)/GPU combo as the Nitro, and the Samsung Skyrocket also. Other than the Nitro having a higher resolution screen to deal with, I'd imagine any drastic performance differences between the 3 phones would be down to software.

I mean the frames are just so slow when you press the app drawer button. I even have it rooted and tried different ROMS and kernals, but I'm beginning to think it is ICS itself. I had a Sensation that seemed like it was running at 60 FPS and it was just smooth. When people say that their Nexus phone is running "buttery smooth" I'm sure they're blind. After playing with my girl friends SGS2, I'm completely jealous of how smooth and snappy her phone is compared to mine.
So the question is, why the hell is Nexus or ICS so damn slow and choppy compared to other phones like the SGS2 and my old Sensation?
Its not...are you overclocked? That could cause stutteryness. Maybe you should try restarting he phone or clearing RAM? My phone is buttery smooth, faster than any other phone I've seen.

i hate to say this, but your either trolling or you have a broken phone.
out of every phone i've owned. (including the Sensation and the Galaxy Note) my GF's Nexus is by far the smoothest out of all of them. the closest one i've owned in 'smoothness' was the Note. followed by the Sensation. difference is the Sensation took 1.7GHz to get to anywhere near smooth. whereas the Note and the Nexus were/are bone stock.
For the 1st time you call the app drawer it could be a bit lag, but I can hardly observe that without this thread.
Maybe its your phone. Have you tried another one? My co-worker just got one and he also has occasional lag when he goes back and fourth from the app drawer to the home screen. He returned it, got another and he was able to duplicate the problem. I've had mine since day one and have never had any lag issues, and yes mine is "buttery smooth", and no I'm not blind. We figured it must be a bad batch.
My Galaxy Nexus is way smoother than my Galaxy S2.
my phone is smooth.
OP is nut. Sorry friend. I am unlocked rooted 4.0.4 no mods at all and this phone is fast as one could hope for.
You must have a software bug or something, my UI is easily hitting the 60fps mark and buttery smooth compared to all my previous android phones.

It just feels like it's frame rate is low. If your looking at your home screen, you have some widgets and press the home button to fly back to the main screen, you can see the frames just drop. It's stupid.

Don't use live wallpapers. Aside from a few of the bundled ones, they're all made for 800x480, and even the optimized ones don't help the framerates.
No worries man, I know what you are talking about but its more to do with the Resolution of the Nexus's screen more than anything. Its pretty taxing on the phone to pull off the resolutions its rendering but it can tweaked to be pretty smooth and fast. The launcher on the Sensation is very optimized whereas the SGS2 is overly powerful that it can run pretty much anything at full blast due to the superior GPU on the SoC. Luckily our phone can run 2D graphics and calculations faster than any other phone on the market even being clocked at 1.2 Ghz.

Well, there are big differences on the Gnex and HTC one X hardware. You cant just think that it will have the same performance.
The question is, do you really need a phone that is 100% smooth?
But android is becoming a heavy OS. Its natural to evolve this way, as well as hardware.

I can conquer.
When downloading from the Play store, It is extremely slow on various roms.
I believe the problem is the read\write speeds of the storage which is extremely slow.
too bad
yes, i have the same problem whem the app is installing. Its very slow and laggy. Its important to say that there are many apps for android that are poorly optimized, so even in a powerful hardware you may have some issues.
Considering Gnex is a mid end device, i think soon you have to change your phone to a high end if you want more smoothness and if you are willing to pay the price.

This didn't happend on 4.1, so it's not a hardware issue

i disagree bro...
if you compare GNex with the smartphones with the same h/w config, u wud definatly agree dat its the best in its generation.
writing to disk normally slows the phone. Probably is more related to the OS than hardware.
No, just 4.2* is junk. Go back to 4.1.2 and you'll see the difference.

Hey guys im coming form the At&t forum and we have been discussing the amount of lag on the phone I was curious if you T-Mobile users are experiencing lag like us At&t users? I'm curious if its the phone or At&t's version is just lagtastic.
I just came over here to post the same thing. Looking through the first couple of pages of threads, it does not look like lag is appearing anywhere in the titles.

In my ~2 years on ATT I've learned that ATT bloatware not only sucks terribly, but also is memory intensive. Get someone that's rooted to debloat and see if they still have lag.
Some people have mentioned lagginess, but it doesn't appear to be wide-spread. Posting additional info about the lag you're seeing would be helpful...

I have been rocking mine for three days and I'm experiencing little to no lag. The s3 had lag from the TouchWiz interface the lock screen had a little lag and the home button too. Overtime the s3 got faster. I've owned both s3 and note2 and now s4 and I can't tell you that the s4 is dramatically laggyer. But I do notice minors lag in certain apps but its not enough to cry about and it's not something that can't be addressed by either official update or custom ROM.

For sure the note 2 is snappier I know it. I wont lie. But the s4 (at least mine) hasnt been lagging that bad at all. This ui is one of the most customizable and tricked out uis ive seen out of the box..I have no been around 3 s4s and they all been running good. Lag I do notice is switching tabs in browser and opening gallery takes like 2 secs. No keyboard lag and quadrant scores are ridiculous

Coming from the s3, I do feel that the s4 lags a little bit. Switching tabs on chrome and pressing home button is two of them, the camera shutter is laggy as well, it's not instant like how it was on the s3. I have disabled some of the bloat, but can't say it has helped.

I'm going to go ahead here and say something that will probably upset quite a few people.
Your lag (in my opinion) is most likely
45% Bloatware
40% User error/****ty application choice
5% The phone
Tell me I'm wrong all you want, but that's what I'm sticking with because I have experienced much less lag and much more snappy response than the S3.

I should've put ATT where I put The Phone... that's really what I meant.
Like I have said, I experienced NO lagging problems. Pure speed and responsiveness. And this is on 3 different T-Mobile S4's that I have used extensively.
Like ^^ said, see if you can return your phone and buy a Tmobile and unlock it if it's that much of a problem, otherwise wait till we got some AOSP, because it's obvious to me that ATT's ROM is ****.
I must agree with my fellow T mobile s4 owners. I rooted. De bloated and took off a few useless window animations and my s4 is flying. Only one tiny tiny thing maaaybe is home button is .05 secs to slow. Personally I feel like its some BS samsung bug or timing issue in software.
Im coming from a rooted htc amaze dual 1.5ghz snapdragon w 1gb ram, that was a fast phone when it was unlocked and set up properly.
With the s4 Even when I had it completly stock it wasnt "lag" it was more touchwiz and bloat. Performance AND battery life have been amazing for me. My device doesnt even have much of the smearing others are reporting.
I dont post much but this device has restored my faith in samsung phones.
If your device is otherwise I think you should replace or buy tmo ver and unlock like previously stated.
Hope it works out for you.
I don't have an S4 so I can't test this, but Jason on All About Android said he turned off Air Gestures and the lag and stuttering went away.
I'm coming from an s2 t989 and am completely pleased with the results. The home button lag isn't evident in my device, I'll get back to you if it comes up .

+1, Not that it is a huge difference, but this does make a small difference.
Before my S4, I had (still have) the Note II ... The touch screen on the S4 is much snappier (obviously with the new integrated tech.) than any of my previous phones...Note II and S3.
This is definitely not a hardware issue for those who are experiencing the random lag.

I have had my HTC One for about 5 days now. I love most everything about the phone. The one thing that is driving me nuts is the lag/stuttering/choppy scrolling in 3rd party apps. Apps like Plume, Facebook, and google+ are the worst. Facebook is almost unbearable. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there any way to fix it? I am seriously debating on taking this thing back. I hated the tiny screen on my iPhone but the scrolling was so smooth on that phone. Maybe I was just spoiled. But maybe I just got a bad device. Anyone else?
I have experienced no lag on this device. Bought it on launch day.

Is it possible that one device would perform better than another? The sense launcher and all the sense apps scroll and transition really smoothly but as soon as I get in another app its lag city. I have noticed that the stock twitter app scrolls smoothly but if I use something like Plume or echofon I get lagging and stuttering. I am so frustrated.
So I ended up taking the phone back and getting it replaced by another one. Unfortunately it is exactly the same. I am really confused. I must pay way to much attention to the smoothness of my scrolling. So does no one experience any type of lag or choppiness in the facebook app or in twitter apps like Plume or seesmic? I'm just wondering if I am doing something that is causing the lag.

facebook scrolling is tough on any device...
It's loading all of that stuff in the background. Mine is 'choppy' as well but its not lagging. It responds immediately to any touch input, but the news feed hits a few snags when I try and go through it really fast.
Maybe what I am referring to lag isn't lag so much. Its just choppy like you described. It would seem that it is then more of a loading issue than a performance issue maybe. May just be something I need to get used to. I am struggling with the thought of going back to a 4 inch iphone screen.
What you are experiencing is normal. Call it lag, call it choppy, ect. Some people notice it like you and me, some people don't notice it. A lot of Apps for android have not been optimized to run on the new snapdragon 600 processors. Could be because they want the minimum requirements on these to be so low that Joe Blow with his LG Optimus DYNAMIC AT 500mhz can at least play Jetpack Joyride, while we HTC One owners see lag every three seconds. It you want everything to be buttery smooth, buy a Windows Phone 8. They optimize all there apps and have requirements met by each device. Same with Apple. But WP8 has no apps and Apple lacks customization. So I'll take my HTC One with a laggy Facebook and Jetpack Joyride and hope they optimized a new version of them for the new processors that are being released.
Perhaps everything else is so fast on the phone that you are perceiving "normal" as "laggy"
Sent from my Zune HD. Yeah, I still have one of those.
deep man.... deep....
Yeah, if you came from an iPhone which in terms of smoothness is pretty damn smooth in just about everything, then the little skips and stutters in Android will annoy you for a while.
It happened to me a couple years ago when I switched but it was much worse since the phones were so much slower. But the openness of Android and it's roms as well as the community made me stay. Now a days there really isn't to much of a difference on Android phones in terms of smoothness, or at least the gap has closed a bit.
You got to hand it to Apple though, they make their phones feel faster than they really are lol

think you should give bad reviews in the playstore for apps that are "laggy" for you.
Its the devs not optimizing code or trying to do too much at once that cause it.
Like the Menu button black bar. That has been around for what, 2 years, and its because devs refuse to update their apps to the newest android code.
Swype specifically is brutal for me ... sometimes upward of a two second lag for the keyboard to pop up.
I realize this is a big time first world problem.
Yeah I really think it does boil down to poorly written apps. I have tried almost every twitter app on the market and they all scroll kind if rough to me, but settled on the stock one for now. It actually scrolls pretty good. So it can be done. I wonder why that seems to be more of an exception than a rule.
Another thing I noticed it that it may have something to do with how android scrolls vs ios. Ios scrolls much slower but I think that allows for the choppiness from images loading to not seem as choppy. If i do a quick swipe up with my finger on android that thing cruises where in ios it scrolls a quarter of the way down. I think I'm going to just try and get used to it. I really like the phone overall.
I haven't experienced any lag whatsoever. The phone is pretty snappy. What is your memory usage average when you go into manage apps? Is something eating up a lot of memory?
The only other thing I could suggest is rebooting into stock recovery and wiping the cache.
Like others have said, it boils down to 3rd party app optimization. It's really unfortunate that a lot of apps don't take full advantage of quad core processors and I hope in the near future most of them do.
I don't have what I'd consider lag, but when scrolling in some 3rd party apps it is jittery.
I came from iPhone to HTC One as well and I was honestly expecting it to be just as smooth as the iPhone considering it has more power, but it, without a doubt, is not. The At&t One I had for work was jittery as well. I think it boils down to Apple makes the phone & software so it is more seemless where as one company makes android and another makes the phone and then modifies that software, so there's bound to be a tiny disconnect.
I still have my iPhone 5 but the jitter of the One is not enough for me to go back to a 4 inch screen everyday. When Apple decides to make a 4.7 - 5 inch iPhone, then we'll talk.

You can fix this by changing "long press home" to a menu button replacement.
Specifically go to settings hit "display gestures and buttons" and hit "home" you want the 2nd option "swipe up for Google now, press and hold for menu"

I agree. People ask why I didn't wait to see what the new iPhone was going to be like. And I told them it was pretty simple, actually... It was obvious the form factor wasnt changing.

of course you can. That is called a work around because some devs are lazy and don't update their apps to the latest android framework...

Hey guys,
I know this may sound like a broken record, but after some pretty extensive use, the lag still exists, and is fairly consistent. I am not Sure if it is just that I am spoiled by my note 2 and its ultra smoothness, but I am testing the crap out of this tablet and in and out of programs back to the home screen and swiping left to right, I am having very consistent lag or stutter. What is everyone elses tablet working like? I only am using 3 screens with minimal widgets and am always monitoring my background running apps and processes. Hands down best tablet I have used just wish it was Smoother
What lag?

Like lag while swiping screens left to right. Pulling down the notification bar. Opening applications. Etc.

I don't get any of that lag. Did you take the OTA updates? they may help.
its not that bad, i bearly even notice the lag.
After installing both OTA updates, doing a factory reset, and rooting, I get no lag whatsoever, except when I wake the device. For some reason, if I haven't used it in a while, when I press the home button, the power button, or pull out the pen, it takes about 3 seconds to wake.
Ridiculous.

Stock. I'm not sure I want to overclock. I don't want to do anything that will drain the battery faster. Are you thinking of OC'ing? And if so, to what?
My region had none of these new updates and I don't have any lag, unless in the crappy Android internet browsers. I use my iPad for that. Also switched to Apex launcher (which has a decent Free version).

I don't have any lag. I'm comparing this to an ipad 2, which this replaced, and a Galaxy S4. This tablet is a tad quicker than the Galaxy S4.
Perhaps you have misbehaving app running in the background?

I had lag when search index was scanning my SD card for few days. One bad pdf or document may force to do it.
Wow..... just wow lol.
I agree with the OP. This was not supposed to lag, and I have it too. Love the tab, but I didn't have to have it. Now that I do, I won't get rid of because I like it. But it was supposed to be lag free, per say. Rooted and both ota's, hasn't gotten better or worse out of the box. Just has that typical Sammy lag. Slightly disappointed with that.
I've noticed terrible lag in theoldreaer.com. it is worst on chrome but better if I hold it portrait. the marking item read as i scroll kills the tablet. smooth as butter on my exynos 4 gn8. overall this tablet is the best android tablet I've owned but it does have its issues.
also, scrolling long websites take far too long for a device with 3 gigs of RAM to redraw. It should be able to keep the entire page in memory .
Lag...
I don't get an unreasonable amount of lag EXCEPT when opening the floating keyboard in a Web browser. I really like that keyboard for swipe typing with the Spen. Unforgivable? Yes. Definitely.
The thing that irks me more than anything is the ungodly huge notification drawer lagging when you swipe down. Maybe if they designed it like stock Android with two smaller ones it might work better. That drop down should be and is butter on a lot of other devices. I don't get it.
I'm not getting rid of the tablet but I will complain until they fix it in 4 months or however long it takes. Or until somebody makes a sweet TouchWiz ROM.

Not that I am aware of. At times it is very smooth , others it is catching up to itself, not sure why. I have seen you tube reviews of it acting the same and many people commenting on it,
Try turning off animations in developer option, it always work for my Samsung note 2 & 3.
