I have had my HTC One for about 5 days now. I love most everything about the phone. The one thing that is driving me nuts is the lag/stuttering/choppy scrolling in 3rd party apps. Apps like Plume, Facebook, and google+ are the worst. Facebook is almost unbearable. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there any way to fix it? I am seriously debating on taking this thing back. I hated the tiny screen on my iPhone but the scrolling was so smooth on that phone. Maybe I was just spoiled. But maybe I just got a bad device. Anyone else?
I have experienced no lag on this device. Bought it on launch day.

Is it possible that one device would perform better than another? The sense launcher and all the sense apps scroll and transition really smoothly but as soon as I get in another app its lag city. I have noticed that the stock twitter app scrolls smoothly but if I use something like Plume or echofon I get lagging and stuttering. I am so frustrated.
So I ended up taking the phone back and getting it replaced by another one. Unfortunately it is exactly the same. I am really confused. I must pay way to much attention to the smoothness of my scrolling. So does no one experience any type of lag or choppiness in the facebook app or in twitter apps like Plume or seesmic? I'm just wondering if I am doing something that is causing the lag.

I've had mine for a week and I see virtually no lag in any apps. I'm very pleased with the performance.

facebook scrolling is tough on any device...
It's loading all of that stuff in the background. Mine is 'choppy' as well but its not lagging. It responds immediately to any touch input, but the news feed hits a few snags when I try and go through it really fast.
Maybe what I am referring to lag isn't lag so much. Its just choppy like you described. It would seem that it is then more of a loading issue than a performance issue maybe. May just be something I need to get used to. I am struggling with the thought of going back to a 4 inch iphone screen.
What you are experiencing is normal. Call it lag, call it choppy, ect. Some people notice it like you and me, some people don't notice it. A lot of Apps for android have not been optimized to run on the new snapdragon 600 processors. Could be because they want the minimum requirements on these to be so low that Joe Blow with his LG Optimus DYNAMIC AT 500mhz can at least play Jetpack Joyride, while we HTC One owners see lag every three seconds. It you want everything to be buttery smooth, buy a Windows Phone 8. They optimize all there apps and have requirements met by each device. Same with Apple. But WP8 has no apps and Apple lacks customization. So I'll take my HTC One with a laggy Facebook and Jetpack Joyride and hope they optimized a new version of them for the new processors that are being released.
Perhaps everything else is so fast on the phone that you are perceiving "normal" as "laggy"
Sent from my Zune HD. Yeah, I still have one of those.
deep man.... deep....
Yeah, if you came from an iPhone which in terms of smoothness is pretty damn smooth in just about everything, then the little skips and stutters in Android will annoy you for a while.
It happened to me a couple years ago when I switched but it was much worse since the phones were so much slower. But the openness of Android and it's roms as well as the community made me stay. Now a days there really isn't to much of a difference on Android phones in terms of smoothness, or at least the gap has closed a bit.
You got to hand it to Apple though, they make their phones feel faster than they really are lol

think you should give bad reviews in the playstore for apps that are "laggy" for you.
Its the devs not optimizing code or trying to do too much at once that cause it.
Like the Menu button black bar. That has been around for what, 2 years, and its because devs refuse to update their apps to the newest android code.
Swype specifically is brutal for me ... sometimes upward of a two second lag for the keyboard to pop up.
I realize this is a big time first world problem.
Yeah I really think it does boil down to poorly written apps. I have tried almost every twitter app on the market and they all scroll kind if rough to me, but settled on the stock one for now. It actually scrolls pretty good. So it can be done. I wonder why that seems to be more of an exception than a rule.
Another thing I noticed it that it may have something to do with how android scrolls vs ios. Ios scrolls much slower but I think that allows for the choppiness from images loading to not seem as choppy. If i do a quick swipe up with my finger on android that thing cruises where in ios it scrolls a quarter of the way down. I think I'm going to just try and get used to it. I really like the phone overall.
I haven't experienced any lag whatsoever. The phone is pretty snappy. What is your memory usage average when you go into manage apps? Is something eating up a lot of memory?
The only other thing I could suggest is rebooting into stock recovery and wiping the cache.
Like others have said, it boils down to 3rd party app optimization. It's really unfortunate that a lot of apps don't take full advantage of quad core processors and I hope in the near future most of them do.
I don't have what I'd consider lag, but when scrolling in some 3rd party apps it is jittery.
I came from iPhone to HTC One as well and I was honestly expecting it to be just as smooth as the iPhone considering it has more power, but it, without a doubt, is not. The At&t One I had for work was jittery as well. I think it boils down to Apple makes the phone & software so it is more seemless where as one company makes android and another makes the phone and then modifies that software, so there's bound to be a tiny disconnect.
I still have my iPhone 5 but the jitter of the One is not enough for me to go back to a 4 inch screen everyday. When Apple decides to make a 4.7 - 5 inch iPhone, then we'll talk.

You can fix this by changing "long press home" to a menu button replacement.
Specifically go to settings hit "display gestures and buttons" and hit "home" you want the 2nd option "swipe up for Google now, press and hold for menu"

I've read about lag issues on this forum, but I wasn't sure if it meant the same thing as I am experiencing. For me, no matter what ROM or Kernel, although it is better with Bullet on lagfree or performance, I get micro-stuttering (hiccuping in otherwise perfectly smooth motion) almost contstantly, but kind of in intervals.
It happens while scrolling, it happens during games, it happens no matter which home replacement I use. I don't think its a GPU performance issue because I've had a couple phones less powerful than this one that didn't do this. Is this the way everyone's phone is, or did I just get a defective one?

Yeah Mine Does This As Well Try V6 Supercharger Mod It Helps Alot
I have the same thing...it seems like its a issue with 2d graphics
I wonder why that is... it's not like the Adreno in our phones has less 2d performance than the Tegra or the SGX540 @ 200 Mhz. Hopefully we can get an update to fix this.
it would help if people complaining about this micro lag can show a video of what is happening, as it games and apps runs smooth like butter in my phone
check there aren't too many unnecessary left over apps hanging in the background, make sure when you exit an app, it's actually exited, quit
simply closing or changing to another screen / app will leave the other apps running in the background
that's the only times i get those micro lags
this phone runs sooooo smooth, even with multiple apps running simultaneously, even under heavy file access
in my old Nexus S it would have halted the phone until the file copy process finished, before i can even run a game while waiting for the copy to finish
only under those situations i get micro lags, otherwise this phone is incredibly smooth when there's nothing else running in the background
I don't really have a way to capture it on video or I would. For me, it happens to the same extent whether I have no apps open or a ton. It seems like either some people are more sensitive to it, or some people got bad phones like with the blobs.
I suppose I might be experiencing "micro stuttering" but only if I really pay attention. Yeah, this phone is smooth like butter. Then again, i'm coming from an Eris. I experience no lag though. Everything is smooth. now i'm running bomba-deery-air or whatever it's called with the jugs kernal so I could OC it to 1.8 but it was already fast. I was just being greedy. Just putting my experience out there. Have had the phone for a couple weeks now.

Okay, I just started experiencing real lag, albeit momentary lag, not like any lag I've experienced on any windows machine or device I've ever used, while downloading a couple torrents in the background. But considering we've only got a gig of ram that's not a bad right? I'm still not complaining. Phone still kicks [email protected]%! As far as I'm concerned.

i experience skipping or micro stutter on home screen .
If you take your finger and slide to right or left like your scrolling to next home screen. first start very very slow. then speed up a tad then try fast ..
you will see skipping or stuttering of the icons at medium scroll speed.
i dont have a camera to photograph it.
the att galaxy s2 doesnt do this. its like a ghosting like gaming on a 5 ms led monitor a 2ms moniter reduces it.
guys i have this problem too, then i start playing with the voltage and now i'm getting to the point where its completely gone. Undervolt is generally good but some phone use more voltage than other.
also using system tuner pro mess around with the memory a little, under "visible application" i see twlauncher is there, i increase it to 24mb and it seems to help.. again i'm not 100% sure if these are the two thing that cause it but it helps alot and i also have live wallpaper too and now my stuff is running smooth.
This problem only happens when you try to use a 3rd party launcher, if you are using the stock touchwiz launcher, you will say, "these people are stupid and have no idea what they are talking about, my phones smooth as butter" this is really unfortunate because I love using ADW Launcher EX, but just use the stock launcher until ice cream sandwich comes out. I don't notice these micro studders at all anywhere else throughout the phone, this phone is bomb and anyone who says otherwise is clueless. I have the white one and love it. Its beautiful. Just can't wait for samsung to fix this lil problem in 3rd party launchers.
If you are talking about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414929
flash a skyrocket rom, itll be waaaay better, i promise
I'm using ADW and experiencing no stuttering, micro or otherwise.
I've tried adw, ics, and go launcher ex. All of them suffer from the same problems on the more popular roms, although adw is the least problematic. I don't have this problem anymore since I installed domination rom 2.0. Games, apps, scrolling... no more stuttering... it's as smooth as an iPhone 4s unless the launcher rebooted... and even then it's only a few seconds till it's back to it's creamy state of tranquility
My SGSII HercuDom needs more w00t. It always needs more w00t!
Most people are blind to it. As a user of all platforms I can tell you there is significant stuttering on my SGS2 with any ROM.
So I can flash skyrocket roms and kernels?
I just wanna double check before I go flashing something lol. I wanna see if I can notice a difference.

If it is in the T989 forum it will work on your phone if it is the T989.
Has anyone else noticed the Galaxy Nexus lags a lot? I'm thinking about getting this phone but playing around with it yesterday somewhat changed my mind. There was noticeable lag doing simple things like swyping from one screen to the next, opening up messaging and using the keyboard, etc. The UI just lags a lot. This was on a static wallpaper.
Then I turned on a live wallpaper (aquarium from market) and the entire thing just went downhill, the lag got incredibly worse and cumbersome. This phone didn't feel any faster than my current Vibrant.
I was expecting the hardware acceleration to render this phone smooth as butter but it's not.
Lag on Android phones is really annoying, Google needs to change this.
What are your thoughts?
i think playing at the store for five minutes with the phone, one cannot include its the phone that is lagging. I am certain there was an app on there that should not have been installed. Many apps out there are not compatible with ICS so it will take some time before they streamline them all on ICS. This is the price we pay for up to date tech. I had a rogue app resource hogging my phone and as soon as i removed it, my GN started working properly.
Mine is smooth. I know that people call their phones smooth but they are not iPhone smooth, but I can honestly say, for the first time on my life, that I have an incredibly smooth Android phone. All my iPhone-owning buddies agreed

With a static (black) wallpaper there is hardly ever any lag on my device.
Live wallpapers, esp. anything other than Phase Beam, add considerable lag when swiping through the desktops.
Yeah I played with the one at verizon and it had every verizon app you could think of loaded on it.. after booting up the first minute was laggy but after that it was super fast..
Its really smooth. When Android revolution 2.1.1 releases that should address the lag. It should be out on the gsm phones.

It is kinda laggy here and there, but i'm used to it. I dont get why its smooth when you swipe through home screens, but if you use the home button to take you back to the default home screen the framerate takes a dive.
My last phone was a Vibrant. I know what lag is. My GN doesnt even come close to the lag that phone had when running a Samsung rom. Like others have said this phone is smooth as butter.

I read lot of people blame not updated apps for lagginess, but how can i know which of my apps cause lags while all installed apps work fine?

Turn off the Live Wallpaper on the store one - all the chop/lag goes away after you set a static one. This is also easily the smoothest browser I've ever seen on an Android phone.
Mine is buttery smooth. I can't help but wonder if the people having lag issues are using widgets or mods that are poorly optimized.

There is a slight issue that many seem to be having with GSM phones and the 4.0.2 update. My 4.0.1 was buttery smooth but now it seems to lag on app drawer and widget screen and elsewhere a bit. It seems that 4.0.2 is the culprit.
smoooothe
Nope, no lag whatsoever. I am using a live wallpaper (the weather one from Beautiful widgets). Still no lag. Opened 10 apps, kept using the recent app button to switch between them, went thru 4 diff sites on browser using bookmarks, went to txt msg, google+, calendar and back to home screen, no lags whatsoever.
I do have problems with overheating (and battery, but thats not problem, its just the way of life with 4g android phones), but lags, i left them behind with the iphone (YES, I SAID IPHONE). My experience with iphone 4 (when i first bought it) was smoothe but not this smoothe. After a year, the phone was as responsive as my penis right after sex.
Currently, my wife has the iphone 4s, and my gnex is as smoothe as the 4s, if not smoother.
Tested about 3 different phones. All choppy.
HW Acc is only a part of the problem. Android wont ever be as smooth as iOs or Win7 until they rewrite from the ground up. It certainly is "smoother" than before but its crystal clear just swiping home screens and opening apps theres no consistency in FPS.
That said store demos are awful for android . Ive never seen a nice smooth store demo..bloat ware 101 widgets and 30 apps open will give you a bad impression. Galaxy Tab is awful in the stores. My tab is far smoother and much faster...but itll take a new launcher and custom ROM for that.
wait for 4.0.3. That fixes a lot of the lag issues.

It does lag alot but in 1-2 months everthing will be optimized for ICS and google might have pushed some updates too .. Im sure this phone will end up as smooth as the S2. And gingerbread is faster on my nexus s then ICS is. But just wait and see. Devs in this forum will make this phone the best. CyanogenMOD!
I dont know what the hell people do to the display devices in verizon stores but its unbelievable sometimes lol. When i was picking up my galaxy i went over to play with both xyboard tablets and i swear to god i couldnt get them to swipe from screen to screen without chocking up and freezing. I tried browsing... slow, jitterry, zero response from touchscreen to input at times. Horrendous. I even rebooted both devices and they were almost to the point of unusable. I remember thinking WTF could people have done to these brand new tablets to have them running this bad?! See stuff like that doesnt bother me, because i know how honeycomb is supposed to run, (as i have owned two honeycomb tablets, the transformer and gtab 10.1), but to the casual shopper they walk up to the android tabs poke a few times at the screen, see lag, see no response and then walk away and talk **** to their friends about how much of a POS android is.
So long story short, trying out devices at verizon has usually proved to be a less than stellar experience and not representative of individual user experience on said device (aka. without people somehow raping the devices in store). If i was a store manager i would walk around and actually care about end user experience from the display models and check to make sure my displays were functioning properly.
Okay so I'm thinking about getting it switching from my galaxy s2. Well I went to the att store today. Why did it lagg so bad. I even restarted it and still lag. Expseically in the browser! Went to xda full website and holly crap zooming in and out was a pain! Then on my galaxy s2 it was smooth with no lag at all. Is it really that slow

keep your s2. simple & done.
It is not as laggy as in the store but its not going to be as buttery smooth as your galaxy S2.
I'm finding the same... The only chance you got is custom roms and kernels. That if we can get CWM going.. honestly I'm thinking of returning this for the nexus...
"Lag" is a really subjective term. Are we talking because it wasn't instantaneous therefore it lagged, or are we talking about it took a second? 3 seconds?
The GS2 has an 800x480 screen resolution vs. the Nitro's 1280x720 so it's doing that much more work to draw the screen. Have you been to the XDA site on your S2 before, if so that means your browser probably cached the site, whereas the Nitro has the initial load lag...Assuming you were using the exact same stock browsers as well?
Don't get me wrong, there's general agreement that the Nitro has lag, but there's also a general agreement that it has a LOT to do with the AT&T bloat and with some tweaking it can be mostly remedied.
As Namuna said, there are a lot of factors involved. I, for one, have no idea how the original nitro in the AT&T store runs. The second I got it, I rooted it and did a factory reset, and I have zero complaints about lag. I also go to the full xda site on my phone (I loathe all mobile versions of websites), and I have no complaints with lag. Scrolling around up and down, zooming in and out may not always be buttery smooth (mostly it is, but sometimes, zooming in and out can drop the frame rate to about 15/s while zooming), but I never experience a delay in scrolling/zooming, so I can't really call it lag. Maybe stutter.

Could very well be a placebo. Could be some remnants of factory "crud" that gets cleared out only after a factory reset. I don't think you'll get any argument from anyone that it doesn't make any sense why this helps, but there's plenty enough folks that have done it (myself included) and will say it indeed makes a difference.

If you don't mind some slight stutter here and there and don't need to run the latest and greatest looking games, definitely go with the Nitro.
The screen is GORGEOUS
Writing / reading email is a joy on this device.
Just to note, I'm pretty sure all of us here have custom launchers now. The default launcher is really slow, but Go launcher / Launcher Pro / ADW Launcher are pretty snappy.
I'm no Android expert, but with the Adreno 220 the Nitro should be able to run the latest and greatest looking games, right? Anyway, if you browse the web a lot and e-mail then pick this phone.

The Adreno 220 is great, and so is the 1.5Ghz S3, but games aren't optimized for this resolution, or the current software that's running on the phone. I'm sure we will see a performance increase once we get ICS.

Tethering is possible without even rooting, but you'll have to install a 3rd party app on your phone and a program on your computer for what I do. I use PDAnet.

Something to keep in mind is that HTC Vivid uses the same CPU (the Vivid is clocked down to 1.2 GHz)/GPU combo as the Nitro, and the Samsung Skyrocket also. Other than the Nitro having a higher resolution screen to deal with, I'd imagine any drastic performance differences between the 3 phones would be down to software.
Hey guys,
I know this may sound like a broken record, but after some pretty extensive use, the lag still exists, and is fairly consistent. I am not Sure if it is just that I am spoiled by my note 2 and its ultra smoothness, but I am testing the crap out of this tablet and in and out of programs back to the home screen and swiping left to right, I am having very consistent lag or stutter. What is everyone elses tablet working like? I only am using 3 screens with minimal widgets and am always monitoring my background running apps and processes. Hands down best tablet I have used just wish it was Smoother
What lag?

Like lag while swiping screens left to right. Pulling down the notification bar. Opening applications. Etc.

I don't get any of that lag. Did you take the OTA updates? they may help.
its not that bad, i bearly even notice the lag.
After installing both OTA updates, doing a factory reset, and rooting, I get no lag whatsoever, except when I wake the device. For some reason, if I haven't used it in a while, when I press the home button, the power button, or pull out the pen, it takes about 3 seconds to wake.
Ridiculous.

Stock. I'm not sure I want to overclock. I don't want to do anything that will drain the battery faster. Are you thinking of OC'ing? And if so, to what?
My region had none of these new updates and I don't have any lag, unless in the crappy Android internet browsers. I use my iPad for that. Also switched to Apex launcher (which has a decent Free version).

I don't have any lag. I'm comparing this to an ipad 2, which this replaced, and a Galaxy S4. This tablet is a tad quicker than the Galaxy S4.
Perhaps you have misbehaving app running in the background?

I had lag when search index was scanning my SD card for few days. One bad pdf or document may force to do it.
Wow..... just wow lol.
I agree with the OP. This was not supposed to lag, and I have it too. Love the tab, but I didn't have to have it. Now that I do, I won't get rid of because I like it. But it was supposed to be lag free, per say. Rooted and both ota's, hasn't gotten better or worse out of the box. Just has that typical Sammy lag. Slightly disappointed with that.
I've noticed terrible lag in theoldreaer.com. it is worst on chrome but better if I hold it portrait. the marking item read as i scroll kills the tablet. smooth as butter on my exynos 4 gn8. overall this tablet is the best android tablet I've owned but it does have its issues.
also, scrolling long websites take far too long for a device with 3 gigs of RAM to redraw. It should be able to keep the entire page in memory .
Lag...
I don't get an unreasonable amount of lag EXCEPT when opening the floating keyboard in a Web browser. I really like that keyboard for swipe typing with the Spen. Unforgivable? Yes. Definitely.
The thing that irks me more than anything is the ungodly huge notification drawer lagging when you swipe down. Maybe if they designed it like stock Android with two smaller ones it might work better. That drop down should be and is butter on a lot of other devices. I don't get it.
I'm not getting rid of the tablet but I will complain until they fix it in 4 months or however long it takes. Or until somebody makes a sweet TouchWiz ROM.

Not that I am aware of. At times it is very smooth , others it is catching up to itself, not sure why. I have seen you tube reviews of it acting the same and many people commenting on it,
Try turning off animations in developer option, it always work for my Samsung note 2 & 3.

Coming from the G2 I thought this phone would be much quicker but it has been struggling. I haven't even installed all of my apps yet, and it's already really slow. Multitasking on this phone is not that much faster than the G2 for me. Maybe it is the stock launcher?
Also the Smart Lock is really iffy. Sometimes it doesn't work when I am at home, I think it's because it takes a couple of seconds for it to realize I am at home. Other times when I am out to it doesn't lock it when it should be.
Going to wait until I can root it and hopefully with some changes it gets better. At this point I am really disappointed by the performance. Just as I was typing this and listening to Spotify the phone is lagging while I am trying to turn up the volume.
I find the G2 is still a power house. Perfomance is not that different. I was a bit disappointed in the difference. Aside from the bigger screen, camera, and form factor, it doesnt really seem that different.
Supoosedly there are some background services hogging resources. LG came out and said it was the LG keyboard. Others reported disabling the MultiWindow feature also helps.
It isnt a huge upgrade but I believe it is just initial quirks that need ironing out.
I noticed that my g4 was running slow when I had an SD card installed. It runs smoother without one.
Coming from the Note family, I can say this phone is on par with the Note 4/Edge in terms of performance for day to day activities, with significantly better battery life. My G4 is fast, performs really well with minimal lag. The only lag I noticed is when using the LG keyboard. I installed SwiftKey and my phone now is (almost) lag free. You might need to reset your phone and see if that helps, as I see a lot of members here got their G4 issues resolved after a good fresh restore.

I always factory refresh from the store because they typically skip the initial setup steps. My G4 was acting crazy before that. My friend got a G4 new deliver and set it up herself and has been acting fine. Maybe one of the background apps is constantly looking for a skipped response and eating resources.
Thanks for the replies. As for this being posted before I didn't see it and I wanted to explain my experience / specifics.
I might try the factory reset and see if that helps. As for the sd card it would be hard to remove because it's the main reason I upgraded the phone. Also going to turn off multi window, I don't use it anyway.
Do you use Lastpass?
First thing I noticed after I had my first S6 was how slow the G4 was compared to it. Back on my S6 and couldn't be happier.

Use nova launcher, I like the stock launcher but was getting lots of lag and terrible battery life, switched to nova launcher and phone has been butter ever since, as well as hours of more battery.

Odd, I felt my G4 was getting pretty laggy using Google Now Launcher and switched back to the LG Launcher, which has been perfectly smooth and lag free for me so far.
I have an S6 as well that I had for a month before the G4 and it is definitely faster and smoother (except in Chrome), but I love the larger screen and awesome manual camera controls on the G4. Tough decision for sure. If the G4 was as fast and smooth as the S6, it would be no contest for me, G4 all the way. Still leaning towards the G4 though. Want to wait for the next update on each before making my final decision about which to sell.

Yea I don't know has worked for me, the battery life is for sure longer, but it's all negligible, it may be the phone just settling in, I am hoping that LG will come out with a minor update to address some of the lag and other issues, the s6 is faster though, it also has a faster processor and better GPU. but I feel the camera, screen size, design, Expandable memory and a few other things make it worth it, free extra battery and SD doesn't hurt either.

Try restart the phone.
Phone is a bit slow, but it seems to be getting better every day. I disabled multi window and the circle case feature. Helps a little.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. To the person who asked about lastpass, I don't use it on my phone, love using it on the PC.
I disabled multi window and it has made it a tiny bit faster. Still lagging way more than a 2015 flagship should during normal operation.
I want to install nova launcher but I spent a lot of time setting up folders in the stock app drawer, not fun to set it up all over again.
The S6 is definitely faster than our phones, but as mentioned there are other attributes of the G4 that mean more to some of us. Still, I think this phone should be faster than what I am experiencing. Instead of the free battery promotion I wish they had spent the money on the processor or further optimization.
Turn on force gpu rendering and use google keyboard. Will make your life easier.

Nova can instantly import the folders, CMIIW. shouldn't be a problem
I tried importing but I don't think nova allows folders in the app drawer, didn't work for me. Also by using nova I lose the stock calendar widget that shows the month view with events on it, it has been like this forever, maybe there is workaround?
Definitely laggy. Coming from a faster Note 4. It blows my mind and aggravates me so much when a brand new phone can lag like this. Maybe it's the Slacker app... But I notice when running this and switching between hangouts.. It'll straight up freeze for 3-5 second sometimes. Note 4 never did this. Hoping a patch fixes this beta.
