Sneak peek at Sprint's new LTE speeds (and WAYYY improved 3G speeds). - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Here's one with dude testing newest LTE upgrade "somewhere" near Houston, or San Antonio, TX area:
http://goo.gl/G5a3U
And here's him testing upgraded 3g service in the same area:
http://goo.gl/FbDoj
I live right outside Houston, TX (one of the first "official" cities to be updated), and I wholly approve of these videos.
Looks like we won't have to wait too long.
Opinions?
Edit: "opinions":
(that is, other than opinions about that dude's "extracurricular activities"....) which would be both way too easy, and also not very cool.
Edit: This isn't where I first read about this, but it seems androidpolice has picked up the story: (may give a little more insight):
http://goo.gl/JSGSt

extracurricular? I don't get it...
But mmmmm...speed. that looks reaaalll nice.
Edit: and you can see "sprint pcs" listed as the ISP on speedtest.net's website, so looks pretty authentic.

Yeah, it's fast. But, then again, nobody is on it. Let's see the speeds when 2 million phones are on the network.

Those 3G speeds are past the theoretical max of EVDO RevA.
Is the upgrade and the device being used to test using something other than EVDO RevA?

From reading about this on another site, it had to do with some new Huawei device that Sprint is testing for its new LTE installations.

My 3G speeds have definitely improved. For the first time today I got 2.2mbps download. Well at least sprint is improving 3G speeds since there is no 4G in my area
Sent from my E4GT

I wonder if it's using both 800mhz and 1900mhz at the same time to get those speeds.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

I'd really like to believe this, and the 4G LTE speeds are certainly feasible, but Sprint's (and Verizon's) 3G technology is EVDO Rev. A, which maxes out at 3.1Mbps and that 3G speed test video shows the speed being more than double that.
It's fishy.
Here are my 3G speeds right now:

i call bs on that 3g speed

Have any of you even heard of the new network? Evdo rev b. Simultaneous voice and data. Almost twice the coverage from the same tower. Twice the speed.
I am extremely excited. This is the network I have been waiting for! Once its up and running it will pretty much poop on all networks.

SVDO is separate from Rev B. You can have SVDO even on Rev A. HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon already does that.
Rev B achieves the higher speed through bonding. May or may not yield a real-world improvement during daytime usage depending on your area and conditions. Nighttime usage would probably see a big improvement though.
Too bad our phones don't do Rev B.

The evo can do rev b. I thought the ns4g and epic touch were capable as well.

I don't believe any of the Samsungs (including Epic 4G Touch) can do Rev B because Samsung uses a separate module for the modem (QSC6085) which they haven't updated for a while. This module is common to many of their phones, including the Epic 4G Touch.
HTC tends to use whatever Qualcomm puts out in their current chipset rather than using a separate modem module, so that is why their phones support Rev B.
Now all this Rev B stuff being the explanation for the faster than Rev A 3g speeds is just theory. It is certainly a plausible explanation. The video being bogus is another plausible explanation.

Dont know about the NS4G but our phone the epic touch does not support EVDO Rev B.

thank y'all for correcting me. As I said I thought, but clearly am wrong. I am also under the impression the the speed is due to rev b as that is part of the network vision plans. I hope they post some concrete info because I would love 5mb on 3g. Better coverage. All positives yo me.

From a deployment perspective all the tower hardware should support Rev B, but the last time around when we had this discussion, all indications from Sprint were that they weren't deploying Rev B.
Do you have information now that they have officially said they are supporting/deploying Rev B?

You think the phones will have an LTE toggle or will it work like VZW and just turn on by default. (It seems to be more battery friendly than WiMax.) I don't know if it's because of the technology or what.

Not anymore, there was a video of a sprint conference discussing the benefits but I can't find the link. If I come across more info I'll drop a link

Maybe Sprint just left Rev. B on the tower enabled during testing. It's possible that's why those speeds are coming up. The question is if Sprint is planning to do Rev. B?

No Rev b on QSC 6085

Might have to return the phone until the October 7th announcement since this phone doesn't support Rev B. Sucks because I LOVE this phone, but I want it to be future proof, which by it not supporting Rev B it is NOT. The only phone out for Sprint right now that does support it is the EVO 3D.
I agree with you. Very surprised that this phone would be released without Rev. B support if that is in fact the path Sprint decides to take. Guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Guess I will hang on to my 3D a little longer just in case!

The Photon I believe DOES have rev B support if they do infact have the Qualcomm MDM6600 like the EVO 3D, but I can't get confirmation on that.
Very disappointed they would use an older chipset that isn't compatible with rev b....
Thanks for cutting costs to make that $200 contract price point, Sprint!
So now we have what was, arguably, the hottest phone in the world (besides the iPhone) and we're hampered forever by the For Now network, which loses area in the coverage map almost daily...

Sadly I agree. I will be getting the Photon 4g soon, not only to compare and contrast with the E4GT, but also so I can at least have that until October 7th and see if that actually is part of Sprints big announcement.
There was a story I read dont remdmber where that it said the evo 3d and the gs2 and the conquer have rev b support the photon was up in the air but I have both so either way I should be good.

Also, funny how Sprint conveniently changes the trial period from 30 days to 14 when they release the E4GT then THREE weeks later they are making a 4G announcement ....

According to everything I have read, the chipset in the E4GT does NOT support Rev B, but the chipsets in the EVO 3D and the Photon 4G do (they both have MDM6600).
I made a thread on this very subject yesterday.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271527
So, does this mean the 3G on our devices will be rendered incapable? I get like 1.5-2 Mbps on 3G, I'm cool with that and I also live a 5 minute walk from downtown, so I'm also cloaked in 7-10 WiMax.
Could someone explain if this will make any difference to the way my device functions now?
Edit: Another question, if the ET hadd the 3D's chipset, would we be having the same signal woes?

That it does, but what good is a BRAND NEW phone if it isn't future proof for the next 2 years (now that there are no more premier upgrades and assuming that is Sprints announcement obviously). I will wait it out for another week (literally) and see if there are any leaks to the big announcement, but I will be returning the phone come next week just so I can delay some more for the announcement.

Not sure. There is EVDO advanced which is speeds beyond rev B. I suspect with the SDR's on the netowrk vision they will be able ot do it.
The CDMA radio image on phones is a real time operating system that fits into around 22MB. (The wimax chipset also runs a real time operating system.) I don't see why these couldn't be upgraded with a flash to support rev B or beyond, or why wimax couldn't be flashed to run LTE protocol.

We just got tips from two separate sources, so lets roll with this one. Sprints network vision press conference is scheduled for October 7th of this year, where they are reportedly going to discuss their 4G network plans going forward. What has not been rumored yet is any updates and future upgrades to their existing 3G network. We just learned from our two separate sources that Sprint plans on upgrading their existing EvDO Rev A 3G network to Rev B, enabling much faster speeds on both the up and down link. We were told to expect up to 9Mbps down and 2Mbps up, enabling them to surpass every other 3G network in the US including the “4G” networks T-Mobile and ATT like to say they have. Not all current phones support EVDO Rev B, but we do know at a minimum the Evo 3D and Epic Touch 4G both in fact have Rev B compatible chips out of the box. Lets hope this one pan’s out.
UPDATE: After receiving a few emails, we just wanted to stress something. Take all of this as rumor for now until official. You should always do that! Also we stated the Evo 3D and Epic Touch 4G will work if this all pans out, but its absolutely possible many other phones will. We only can confirm those two.

I bet your neighbor is using tethering and downloading torrents just to see how much data he can use in a month.
This could very well be possible. I have heard that this is actually why Epic 4G Touch users have been suffering from the dropped voice/data, because Sprint has begun updating their towers. I heard this I believe it was on the Android Central forums by someone from Sprint. I'm too lazy to try to find it but it was a topic regarding the random radio drops on the E4GT. I thought the rep was referring to LTE upgrades but it might also be Rev B. I know they are killing off IDEN next year so who knows.. Sprint doesn't even know what they are doing half of the time.

My data usage sucks during the day. Just more people on the network LOL.
3AM data speeds (home) are about 800-1000Kb/sec
3PM data speeds (home) are about 90-240Kb/sec
4AM data speeds (at work / airport) are abut 800-1100Kb
2PM data speeds (at work / airport) are still about 500-900kb)
Where I live at home there are about 200 buildings all like 20+ floors in probably a mile radius. Wifi channels are cramped so I tend to run my wifi routers at the end of the channel spectrum since most people by default are killing channel 6.
It's really a tower to population issue.

[Q] Does the SGH-T989 have 3G?

Does this phone work on 3g, I am very curious because it has it built in to the phone all i see is E, 4G, if not is there a way to get 3G. I will donate alot if I can get 3G
Considering HSPDA+ is effectively enhanced 3G, I'd say that it does. (Yes, it also supports UTMS as well.)
lets put it that way.... you can not have 4G without 3G
We definitely have 3g support. As far as us having a 3g icon, I don't think we have one. T-Mobile most likely did not and will not approve of us having a 3g icon because of marketing trickery. The average consumer will not understand why their 4g phone is constantly saying 3g in a poor service area.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
We don't see 3G because the flickering is very annoying, when the phone is bouncing from UMTS (3G) and HSPA (4G) it's mostly just a technicality anyway.
Yup. I see the H icon all the time, but then again I'm on CM. Not all roms have a 3g/H icon so you could actually BE on 3g but it'll still show 4g.
If you are rooted the guys from team kang have built settings into their rom control on the Juggernaut where you can set it to show 3g when on UMTS and H or 4g when on HSPA and above. Pretty sweet tweak. I love seeing the 3g.

stop worrying about what the technology is and worry about what speeds you get. LTE vs HSPA+ is moot with LTE only being slightly more specturally efficient, not that it really matters to the end user. Verizon's LTE and T-Mobile's HSPA both run the same numbers in Las Vegas.

Wow. Usually have to go farther down into the Valley to get decent speeds. Used to live in the CC. Now up in Madeira Canyon.
actually no you're right.. the tower next to albertsons is backhaul starved because it was upgraded to 3G this year but is not high traffic enough so fiber upgrades are on the back burner. This was on the tower near walgreens and hampton road

So are our phones LTE capable???

I was told by a sprint employee they were, then here that they're not. Then I see this in a thread...
reddragon72 said:
Same issue in Houston two days ago. Wife's Evo 4G had no issues connecting right next to me so I knew it wasn't a tower issue, but my phone or the plan. Called Sprint and talked to three people. The last person I got was in the 4G department. They found that the system is going through upgrades right now for LTE, but he would not elaberate due to privacy concerns... or something like that. He said that my phone had been removed from the Wimax channel to the LTE channel. Since that happened the towers were ignoring my request for an IP. He said the phone is either setup for Wimax or LTE but not for both. 0_o So I asked him how to setup the phone for LTE and he said "there is no need yet since LTE is not open to the public, but only in the testing phase" So I asked... exactly "So can I call back and have my phone switched from Wimax to LTE when LTE is opened up to the public in Houston?" He said "Yes"?!?!?!?!
What does that mean??? He knows all about my phone and what it can do so why did he say that?
Also he mentioned that this seems to be happening to all Epic 4G Touch phones since they are listed in the Sprint system as LTE capable. So that is why people in Q1/Q2 LTE area's are having the issue.
Call sprint and get the 4G people on the phone to reprop your phone from LTE channel back to Wimax.

No they are not. Do not always listen to a Sprint employee 90% of them are flat out stupid. We will not have LTE support. There IS however a SPH-L710 that passed WiFi certs a few weeks back. My guess is that it's the SGS2 but with LTE support and WiMax removed.
Asking a Sprint call center employee to explain or elaborate on a technical detail of their network is like asking a McDonalds counter person to explain how they raised their cows.
They'll give you their 4th grade education mixed with overheard and misunderstood watercooler rumor as fact. "Could you turn off your phone, and pull out the battery? Now restart it! See its fixed, just like our network! Thanks for calling Sprint! Is there anything I can do for you?"***
Oh, btw, if for some reason our phones were capable, it would have been a selling point since release. So, sadly, no.
And if you google it, there are some people talking about tear-downs, and the visible chips, and how those chips are not LTE capable....

When it's worded that way, the guy probably thought he was asking if he can switch to an LTE capable phone. If current Wimax phones only needed a firmware update to work on LTE, Sprint would be doing some good PR work so everyone knew it.

When it's worded that way, the guy probably thought he was asking if he can switch to an LTE capable phone. If current Wimax phones only needed a firmware update to work on LTE, Sprint would be doing some good PR work so everyone knew it.

I agree I assumed he was implying that as well.
It is true though that these phones are not LTE capable.

The only way this phone is going to get you anywhere near lte is if it breaks and asurion runs out of replacements
Somewhat true
I will look for the Doc about this, but I did read some investor fact sheets for sprint transfer to LTE. The big selling point for big investors to put money into sprints LTE was a wider spectrum that would include the bands needed for wimax phones to receive 4g in a sprint LTE only area.
They use a similar system in France, China and other countries where the gov stepped in and funded a super fast wireless broadband system. Are phones would still not be able to roam on LTE but on Sprints network we would still benefit from LTE.
sprint op are dumb. You need to have an LTE chip for that feature

Would that benefit not come from users going to LTE and getting off (for the most part) of the 3G however. If Sprint is in fact doing things somewhat like Verizon is most 3G data is being offloaded (iirc) to the LTE band which frees up 3G.

Also, having a processor that supports LTE wouldn't hurt.

Not quite science.
On the left: Epic 4G Touch on Sprint 3G in Scottsdale, AZ. Google Music streaming a 6 ½ minute song On the right: Galaxy SII Skyrocket on AT&T LTE in Scottsdale, AZ. Google Music streaming a 48 minute party mix.
Note the length of the medium blue buffering bar on the song. The phone on the left buffered numerous times, the phone on the right did not and loaded the 48 minute track faster than the Sprint phone did the 6 ½ minute track.
After this we both played a Katy Perry video (tits) on the Youtube app in HQ, started at the same time. The phone one the right played through with no interruptions, while the phone on the left buffered many times. By the time the phone on the right was done, the phone on the left was not even halfway. Take a look at the signal bars, the phone on the left was getting 'better' reception.
Anyone know wh Sprint 3G data so slow? I was told that towers had been upgraded and fixed in my area.
I was sold this phone and my last one on the promise of 4G being in the Phoenix area in the near future. My guess is that with the trouble that Clear is having, and the switch to LTE that Sprint is making, that I will never get 4G that works on my phone.
If you know something I don't, please let me know!
When comparing 3g to LTE, of course it's going to seem slow.

Lte should outperform 3g any day of the week. 3g is bogged down at sprint. Supposedly there will be less traffic on 3g and better capability on the towers part when lte hits for sprint as you will have people moving to 4g to browse. Don't count on that for a while. Look into a perl change. Koreyhas a thread on how to.

^ This You're basically comparing a "4g" tech to a 3g signal. Not even considering sprints issues the LTE should be faster. Basic search for you

did you do any research before posting this?
this is like saying look at my 56k vs cable why is cable faster?

Yes but they are galaxy s2 phones, all the same huh.... What's 3g and lte hey they rhyme...

Atts 3g is like sprints wimax speeds anyway except more reliable.
Att lte is pricey and limited availability tho

Sprint EVDO 3g vs. AT&T HSPA(+) 3g would be a fairer comparison. Still not fair imo but still same generation technology. It's like trying to compare vhs(2g) vs dvd (3g). Different generation technology. Plus don't hold your breathe for Wimax. You might not make it.
The signal bars has nothing to do with 4g LTE or 3G speeds...
Seriously you knew lte was 10 times faster than (sprints) 3G & any other right? You didn't need these nice gentleman to tell you that. Riiiight bad sprint joke, now hop in 85' DeLorean & "do not post"!
I think it's fair to compare the carrier's abilities in each location. Getting the best of the carrier from each side. It's obviously a better choice to go with AT&T in OP's location, and I wouldn't blame him if he left.
For me, Sprint's speeds are outstanding and I'm not in a hurry to transfer to another carrier anytime soon.
cdma has a max theoretical speed of like 3.something Mbps, of course it's going to be slower.
What Overstew said. Yes, I do know it's not an equal comparison. What I was pointing out is how I've been conditioned to think that not being able to stream music without buffering, or watch a YouTube video without it stopping multiple times is normal. I didn't realize just how slow it was until I compared the two. My speeds are below usable for any premium data type activities.

There have only been 6 cities so far they have been partially upgraded...and Scottsdale isn't one of them. Go check out S4GRU.com for more info
Korey haim or Feldman you did read his post that said att lte not sprint

Take the phones to 64st and Greenway and use the sprint 4g. You'll get equal results. I've used it at 7th street and bell and its great. You can't compare a Ferrari and a gremlin.

Comparing Sprint EVDO-A (3g) with a theo max of 3mbps to a ATT LTE (4g) with a usual speeds of 10-40 mbps.....
How much more rigged can this be?
Apple and oranges...
I don't think I'm anywhere close to the theoretical maximum. I remember 3G with my HTC Touch Pro to be faster than it is today. Seems to only get worse over time.
Yes, apples and oranges. Note the first line, "not quite science".

Are any of you in other cities able to stream a track from Google Music without it stopping to buffer multiple times? Watch a YouTube video without it stopping to buffer multiple times?

I rarely end up on 3G so the answer would be I have no issues. 3G varies from .5 to 2 Mbps around here and as often as I am flashing firmware and modems it definitely varies. Add on various locations of people with old cell phones without wimax things can get a bit slow.

You do realize when touch pro came out there were very few smart phones. And the number is over 100 million now ...sprints 3g was not being raped by millions of smart phones like now.... Most people use more data than minutes etc ... But you also realize sprint wasn't the only one to fall behind on network upgrades but it will get better network vision is coming and lte
