We just got tips from two separate sources, so lets roll with this one. Sprints network vision press conference is scheduled for October 7th of this year, where they are reportedly going to discuss their 4G network plans going forward. What has not been rumored yet is any updates and future upgrades to their existing 3G network. We just learned from our two separate sources that Sprint plans on upgrading their existing EvDO Rev A 3G network to Rev B, enabling much faster speeds on both the up and down link. We were told to expect up to 9Mbps down and 2Mbps up, enabling them to surpass every other 3G network in the US including the “4G” networks T-Mobile and ATT like to say they have. Not all current phones support EVDO Rev B, but we do know at a minimum the Evo 3D and Epic Touch 4G both in fact have Rev B compatible chips out of the box. Lets hope this one pan’s out.
UPDATE: After receiving a few emails, we just wanted to stress something. Take all of this as rumor for now until official. You should always do that! Also we stated the Evo 3D and Epic Touch 4G will work if this all pans out, but its absolutely possible many other phones will. We only can confirm those two.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man I hope its true for the epic touch cause it feels like the sprint network is getting worse by the day.

This was the article, followed by the iFixit tear down that started all this crap in the first place. I never got an email back from Bryan though. Shocker I know.

Yeah sprints network is getting worse by the day. I used to get 1 megs Down on 3g a year ago when I first got my epic. Now on going about 300-400 kbps on my original epic and my epic touch. It seems so slow.

Seems like more and more people near you have sprint now lol

I bet your neighbor is using tethering and downloading torrents just to see how much data he can use in a month.

This could very well be possible. I have heard that this is actually why Epic 4G Touch users have been suffering from the dropped voice/data, because Sprint has begun updating their towers. I heard this I believe it was on the Android Central forums by someone from Sprint. I'm too lazy to try to find it but it was a topic regarding the random radio drops on the E4GT. I thought the rep was referring to LTE upgrades but it might also be Rev B. I know they are killing off IDEN next year so who knows.. Sprint doesn't even know what they are doing half of the time.

My data usage sucks during the day. Just more people on the network LOL.
3AM data speeds (home) are about 800-1000Kb/sec
3PM data speeds (home) are about 90-240Kb/sec
4AM data speeds (at work / airport) are abut 800-1100Kb
2PM data speeds (at work / airport) are still about 500-900kb)
Where I live at home there are about 200 buildings all like 20+ floors in probably a mile radius. Wifi channels are cramped so I tend to run my wifi routers at the end of the channel spectrum since most people by default are killing channel 6.
It's really a tower to population issue.

I need some WIMAX tweaks immediately!!! LOL..but not really LOLing. Im serious
Verizon's network is better. (fact)
Sprint's phones are better. (fact, with minor opinion)
It's a hard choice, but Sprint's network is fantastic in Florida, so I can't really complain.

My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6
Basically lets wimax latch on to a weaker signal
im pretty sure its dependant on area. I have no issues with 3g. I get usually between 700kbps-1.3mbps. on 4g i usually get between 7-12mbps. Not too shabbby for a guy like me
Sprint 4G is garbage. Downtown in 4 different cities you get 2 bars outside and nothing as soon as you go indoors.

I don't understand topics like this.
Its one thing to try to fix this issue (via tweaks, etc) its another to whine.
Feel free to leave any carrier whose network is not performing to your standards.
I haven't even had the chance to experience 4G yet here in my area (not available yet). Still having to pay the $10 a month "premium"data fee though.
That's what truly sucks!

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

I'm sure I'll reap the benefits of this (if it happens...) very quickly, as I live in one of the first areas to get anything from any carrier.
....and that also means I'll be able to get decent home internet speeds, finally(via tether).
Well hurry up and fix the Oxnard Ca sites, evenings and weekends my download speeds are less then 70kbps. From 3am to 9am during the week I can get 1.5 Mbps down.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area
Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.
Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).
For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.
I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.
The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...

Those 3G speeds are past the theoretical max of EVDO RevA.
Is the upgrade and the device being used to test using something other than EVDO RevA?

I'd really like to believe this, and the 4G LTE speeds are certainly feasible, but Sprint's (and Verizon's) 3G technology is EVDO Rev. A, which maxes out at 3.1Mbps and that 3G speed test video shows the speed being more than double that.
It's fishy.

Have any of you even heard of the new network? Evdo rev b. Simultaneous voice and data. Almost twice the coverage from the same tower. Twice the speed.
I am extremely excited. This is the network I have been waiting for! Once its up and running it will pretty much poop on all networks.
SVDO is separate from Rev B. You can have SVDO even on Rev A. HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon already does that.
Rev B achieves the higher speed through bonding. May or may not yield a real-world improvement during daytime usage depending on your area and conditions. Nighttime usage would probably see a big improvement though.
Too bad our phones don't do Rev B.
The evo can do rev b. I thought the ns4g and epic touch were capable as well.

I don't believe any of the Samsungs (including Epic 4G Touch) can do Rev B because Samsung uses a separate module for the modem (QSC6085) which they haven't updated for a while. This module is common to many of their phones, including the Epic 4G Touch.
HTC tends to use whatever Qualcomm puts out in their current chipset rather than using a separate modem module, so that is why their phones support Rev B.
Now all this Rev B stuff being the explanation for the faster than Rev A 3g speeds is just theory. It is certainly a plausible explanation. The video being bogus is another plausible explanation.

From a deployment perspective all the tower hardware should support Rev B, but the last time around when we had this discussion, all indications from Sprint were that they weren't deploying Rev B.
Do you have information now that they have officially said they are supporting/deploying Rev B?
You think the phones will have an LTE toggle or will it work like VZW and just turn on by default. (It seems to be more battery friendly than WiMax.) I don't know if it's because of the technology or what.

Maybe Sprint just left Rev. B on the tower enabled during testing. It's possible that's why those speeds are coming up. The question is if Sprint is planning to do Rev. B?

So are our phones LTE capable???

I was told by a sprint employee they were, then here that they're not. Then I see this in a thread...
reddragon72 said:
Same issue in Houston two days ago. Wife's Evo 4G had no issues connecting right next to me so I knew it wasn't a tower issue, but my phone or the plan. Called Sprint and talked to three people. The last person I got was in the 4G department. They found that the system is going through upgrades right now for LTE, but he would not elaberate due to privacy concerns... or something like that. He said that my phone had been removed from the Wimax channel to the LTE channel. Since that happened the towers were ignoring my request for an IP. He said the phone is either setup for Wimax or LTE but not for both. 0_o So I asked him how to setup the phone for LTE and he said "there is no need yet since LTE is not open to the public, but only in the testing phase" So I asked... exactly "So can I call back and have my phone switched from Wimax to LTE when LTE is opened up to the public in Houston?" He said "Yes"?!?!?!?!
What does that mean??? He knows all about my phone and what it can do so why did he say that?
Also he mentioned that this seems to be happening to all Epic 4G Touch phones since they are listed in the Sprint system as LTE capable. So that is why people in Q1/Q2 LTE area's are having the issue.
Call sprint and get the 4G people on the phone to reprop your phone from LTE channel back to Wimax.

No they are not. Do not always listen to a Sprint employee 90% of them are flat out stupid. We will not have LTE support. There IS however a SPH-L710 that passed WiFi certs a few weeks back. My guess is that it's the SGS2 but with LTE support and WiMax removed.
Asking a Sprint call center employee to explain or elaborate on a technical detail of their network is like asking a McDonalds counter person to explain how they raised their cows.
They'll give you their 4th grade education mixed with overheard and misunderstood watercooler rumor as fact. "Could you turn off your phone, and pull out the battery? Now restart it! See its fixed, just like our network! Thanks for calling Sprint! Is there anything I can do for you?"***
Oh, btw, if for some reason our phones were capable, it would have been a selling point since release. So, sadly, no.
And if you google it, there are some people talking about tear-downs, and the visible chips, and how those chips are not LTE capable....

When it's worded that way, the guy probably thought he was asking if he can switch to an LTE capable phone. If current Wimax phones only needed a firmware update to work on LTE, Sprint would be doing some good PR work so everyone knew it.

Somewhat true
I will look for the Doc about this, but I did read some investor fact sheets for sprint transfer to LTE. The big selling point for big investors to put money into sprints LTE was a wider spectrum that would include the bands needed for wimax phones to receive 4g in a sprint LTE only area.
They use a similar system in France, China and other countries where the gov stepped in and funded a super fast wireless broadband system. Are phones would still not be able to roam on LTE but on Sprints network we would still benefit from LTE.
sprint op are dumb. You need to have an LTE chip for that feature

Would that benefit not come from users going to LTE and getting off (for the most part) of the 3G however. If Sprint is in fact doing things somewhat like Verizon is most 3G data is being offloaded (iirc) to the LTE band which frees up 3G.

And this is how I got out of my contract and why I'm leaving Sprint next week after 10 years. This is actually a good speed test for me.
How did you manage to get out of your contract?

I've been using Sprint for years, their 4G service for over a year now and I've never seen speeds anywhere near what I've seen past few days... it's crazy. I'm hitting 13mb at night, 11mb during the day... I'm VERY pleased right now, it's like years of struggle and their rewarding me.
Rom is straight up Cyanogen 9.
For me, ping times double on ICS.

From playing around past several days, it's all around the pacific northwest, Oregon, Washington, etc.
My guess is they're upgrading towers for LTE. 3G speeds are still the same though, that is to say, beyond belief terrible. But 4G has gone nuts. I might try to find a Sprint store in the area and check to see if LTE is live yet.

So you say your wimax 4g speeds have gone up as a result of the network vision work? I thought that was for lte and 3g improvements only? Can anyone else comment on that?

Beats me as to whats going on... all I know is I've never seen a speedtest result beyond 7mb or so on a GOOD day, now even during busy hours I'm hitting 11, 12, 13... maybe so many Sprint subscribers have cancelled their service due to poor network speeds there's simply now an abundance of bandwidth. lol

Notice the same here in Orlando, 4g speeds have never been higher. Could it be people switching to LTE devices and getting off of wimax?
Edit: unnamed rom, ff18 modem
Swyped from my Samsung Epic™ 4G Touch.
Caulk ROM 3.0, modem ek02 also in the Miami area only Wimax I don't use 3g lol
