[Q] Does the SGH-T989 have 3G? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Does this phone work on 3g, I am very curious because it has it built in to the phone all i see is E, 4G, if not is there a way to get 3G. I will donate alot if I can get 3G

Considering HSPDA+ is effectively enhanced 3G, I'd say that it does. (Yes, it also supports UTMS as well.)

lets put it that way.... you can not have 4G without 3G

We definitely have 3g support. As far as us having a 3g icon, I don't think we have one. T-Mobile most likely did not and will not approve of us having a 3g icon because of marketing trickery. The average consumer will not understand why their 4g phone is constantly saying 3g in a poor service area.

We don't see 3G because the flickering is very annoying, when the phone is bouncing from UMTS (3G) and HSPA (4G) it's mostly just a technicality anyway.

Yup. I see the H icon all the time, but then again I'm on CM. Not all roms have a 3g/H icon so you could actually BE on 3g but it'll still show 4g.

If you are rooted the guys from team kang have built settings into their rom control on the Juggernaut where you can set it to show 3g when on UMTS and H or 4g when on HSPA and above. Pretty sweet tweak. I love seeing the 3g.

My guess is that the OP wants to see whether or not he's in 4g zone or using 4g connection. Although Tmobile doesn't really have a full-pledged 4g network.

I was messing with some apps or settings and noticed it said 3G instead of 4G but it was just once. I might have been on a call...not sure if I was or not though. For sure it said 3G though...I was wondering if it would show it also.

Tmo "4G" is really "FauxG", meaning it's a hoax. It's really all 3g or edge, sad to say LTE is real 4G.

stop worrying about what the technology is and worry about what speeds you get. LTE vs HSPA+ is moot with LTE only being slightly more specturally efficient, not that it really matters to the end user. Verizon's LTE and T-Mobile's HSPA both run the same numbers in Las Vegas.

+1 to that. The other day had to go to a Dr. Off near Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. Speedtest.net gave me 18.2MB/s download. That is the fastest I have yet seen and seriously doubt could be much better on any service. Watched perfectly streaming movie on Netflix for a while, then watch beautifully streaming Hulu+ TV show I wanted to catch up on, while daydreaming in the Dr. Office waiting for my turn

Wow. Usually have to go farther down into the Valley to get decent speeds. Used to live in the CC. Now up in Madeira Canyon.

actually no you're right.. the tower next to albertsons is backhaul starved because it was upgraded to 3G this year but is not high traffic enough so fiber upgrades are on the back burner. This was on the tower near walgreens and hampton road

Vodafone HSDPA - does it exist?

I've just cancelled my Desire/TMobile contract under Distance Selling Regs due to lack of 3G coverage in my area. Occasionally I would find a pocket of superfast 2Mbps HSDPA coverage, but mostly it was crap 2G.
I still have my Vodafone contract running so I'm thinking of staying with them and upgrading (although they're more expensive than TMob).
I've done a few speedtests, and I never get more than 0.47Mps on a 3G signal, although this is available nearly everywhere. Never seen an H.
Can anyone tell me if Vodafone provides the faster H connection anywhere, and whether I'm ever likely to see it in Suffolk?

i agree with you, that score took me bout 5 attempts. others were on average about 2-3 mb/s. and was surprised it pulled out that speed. but just goes to show your not far off the mark because when i ran the test it said 100 miles to London, and the png came out as 50 miles. maybe there's some technicality i am missing somewhere on why that happens, but it did so i have to admit i really font know why.
Hmmm. I was using Mordax Speedtest and got 589kbps, then installed and ran Speedtest.net and got 2101kbps!
The Mordax one doesn't run as long as the Speedtest, but even still - such a wide disparity! I don't know which I trust, if either!
EDIT: Xtremelabs speedtest gives me 1453kbps
Different speed tests will use different servers, that's why you get variable results.

My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6
Basically lets wimax latch on to a weaker signal

Feel free to leave any carrier whose network is not performing to your standards.
I haven't even had the chance to experience 4G yet here in my area (not available yet). Still having to pay the $10 a month "premium"data fee though.

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

[Q]Wcdma?

Hey everyone, I recently got a new Android phone, Samsung galaxy s2x, it should have dual 4g capabilities. The speed isn't great compared to what others have been getting. I usually get around 3-4mbps, the Telus website says 7-14 should be attained...
My question is basically, in the wireless options, I can choose gsm, wcdma or both. Is wdcma considered hspa+ ?
I live in Montreal, where the Telus network should be fully developed. Highest speed I've got was 6mbps.
Anything wrong, or were my expectations too high when buying this phone?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Also, my girlfriend has an iPhone4 with Telus also, its often quicker than mine on the net...and its a 3g phone.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
see this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306045
there are some from Montreal they are getting great speed
the thing is with cell phones, it depends highly in your location and tower
also in Canada do not believe anything that says 4G it's all fake
our infrastructure is poor compared to the USA, at best we can only get good 3G speed even when you see 4G
even the Rogers LTE are no where near as good they also top out around 15 Mbps at its best, while the USA or other counterparts they get like 30 Mbps on LTE
So i'm stuck with slow speeds lol?
I kinda regret going with Telus, they have terrible reception as well as slow speeds...

I think you are just not tech savy enough to use a cell like the S2X. Try doing a speed test in your browser and you will see that the speed test.net app is crap. I get 21 mbps downlink on telus in mtl using speedtest.net in dolphin HD (using app I get 3-10mbps). Stop blaming the carriers. People like you are just never happy but its your own fault! Maybe also if you would test your phone outside your basement it would help! Mtl reception is flawless, actually reception in QC in general is great.
I have tried all the different modems from the kj3, vk1 and even the Blaze LB7 and different roms and I still get miserable speed on my phone. I have many friends with different phones even 3G phones that are doing alot better. I am getting speeds of less than 300 k downlaod with with full bars.

I think some people had similar problems as you. I don't remember exactly but some workarounds are using the supercharger script and running those 3g scripts or whatever it's called.
Someone if i recall correctly couldn't get fast data at all, he opted for a warranty exchange and that fixed it for him.
If anything you could try making your own thread in the Q&A area and maybe those people who had similar problems can answer it for you. Obviously it's not because of your location because your friends' phones get fast speed in the same location

Not quite science.
On the left: Epic 4G Touch on Sprint 3G in Scottsdale, AZ. Google Music streaming a 6 ½ minute song On the right: Galaxy SII Skyrocket on AT&T LTE in Scottsdale, AZ. Google Music streaming a 48 minute party mix.
Note the length of the medium blue buffering bar on the song. The phone on the left buffered numerous times, the phone on the right did not and loaded the 48 minute track faster than the Sprint phone did the 6 ½ minute track.
After this we both played a Katy Perry video (tits) on the Youtube app in HQ, started at the same time. The phone one the right played through with no interruptions, while the phone on the left buffered many times. By the time the phone on the right was done, the phone on the left was not even halfway. Take a look at the signal bars, the phone on the left was getting 'better' reception.
Anyone know wh Sprint 3G data so slow? I was told that towers had been upgraded and fixed in my area.
I was sold this phone and my last one on the promise of 4G being in the Phoenix area in the near future. My guess is that with the trouble that Clear is having, and the switch to LTE that Sprint is making, that I will never get 4G that works on my phone.
If you know something I don't, please let me know!
When comparing 3g to LTE, of course it's going to seem slow.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Lte should outperform 3g any day of the week. 3g is bogged down at sprint. Supposedly there will be less traffic on 3g and better capability on the towers part when lte hits for sprint as you will have people moving to 4g to browse. Don't count on that for a while. Look into a perl change. Koreyhas a thread on how to.

Sprint EVDO 3g vs. AT&T HSPA(+) 3g would be a fairer comparison. Still not fair imo but still same generation technology. It's like trying to compare vhs(2g) vs dvd (3g). Different generation technology. Plus don't hold your breathe for Wimax. You might not make it.
The signal bars has nothing to do with 4g LTE or 3G speeds...
Seriously you knew lte was 10 times faster than (sprints) 3G & any other right? You didn't need these nice gentleman to tell you that. Riiiight bad sprint joke, now hop in 85' DeLorean & "do not post"!
I think it's fair to compare the carrier's abilities in each location. Getting the best of the carrier from each side. It's obviously a better choice to go with AT&T in OP's location, and I wouldn't blame him if he left.
For me, Sprint's speeds are outstanding and I'm not in a hurry to transfer to another carrier anytime soon.
cdma has a max theoretical speed of like 3.something Mbps, of course it's going to be slower.
What Overstew said. Yes, I do know it's not an equal comparison. What I was pointing out is how I've been conditioned to think that not being able to stream music without buffering, or watch a YouTube video without it stopping multiple times is normal. I didn't realize just how slow it was until I compared the two. My speeds are below usable for any premium data type activities.

I rarely end up on 3G so the answer would be I have no issues. 3G varies from .5 to 2 Mbps around here and as often as I am flashing firmware and modems it definitely varies. Add on various locations of people with old cell phones without wimax things can get a bit slow.

You do realize when touch pro came out there were very few smart phones. And the number is over 100 million now ...sprints 3g was not being raped by millions of smart phones like now.... Most people use more data than minutes etc ... But you also realize sprint wasn't the only one to fall behind on network upgrades but it will get better network vision is coming and lte

Abysmal LTE connection speed in heart of San Antonio

Proud owner of a new Galaxy III, but not so happy about the connection speeds. I live near Trinity University in the heart of San Antonio.
When I am in CDMA only mode, the phone connects at 800Kbps - 1 Mbps. When I switch to CDMA/LTE mode and reboot the phone, the connection speed ranges between 58Kbps (not a typo) and about 1100 Kbps. The 3G/4G light stays on 3G, though I briefly saw a flash of 4G.
What the heck is up with this? I upgraded to the phone partly because of the press coverage that attended the LTE roll-out in San Antonio. Is this a software problem? Is it a coverage problem?
If anyone else in Central San Antonio can post their connection speeds, I would be grateful. Also, if there is anything I can do to *force* the phone into 4G mode, that would be good to know.
Thanks!
Aaron
Your best next step is to apply the new LG8 update OTA from Sprint and see if that performs any better.
I feel your pain. I live and work in the stone oak area and have been disappointed in the LTE coverage and connection issues.
Check out this website though for a little clarification.

I can't even connect to 4g today in most areas I have been and inside home. I only saw 4g I've today briefly while traveling in town =(

Yes, I've yet to get LTE speeds above 2Mbps in San Antonio. I've tried all the way by 1604/Bandera all the way to 90/Gen McMullen Blvd. But to be fair, San Antonio is only like 15% rolled out.

Yes, that's why I suggested installing the OTA update and retesting. The update is supposed to help with the threshold problem that S4GRU's analysis identified.

Absolutely. The radio alone helps. I wonder though if it has anything to do with San Antonio having so many hills and changes in altitude? Either way, cn is correct. S.A. only has 15% complete but that is prolly more like 20% now. When LTE does connect, it is no joke.
Average 20down and 12up.
I'm still locked out my home tower for LTE. But this was post update it started happening, sucks I can't test out the new radio lol

When I do connect to 4g its really bad now like its 3g. the tower i usually can connect to at work, i can no longer. I think they may be working on the towers.
Getting consistent connection off marbach and 410

I barely had WIMAX in Central Cali in the lesser of the two "major" cities in the area, Visalia. Now with my S3 LTE, I can't pick up a 4G signal there anymore.
Nice to see SA town talking.

Hell yeah. We should all have a get together! lol
I'm getting pretty good 4G speeds by 1604 & 281.

It was just me. Speed is great. (Original Poster)
Hi folks -- I have been meaning to circle back to correct my original posting. Although LTE reception is not very good inside my house, it is fantastic in most other parts of San Antonio. I have checked in Olmos Park, in the Quarry, in the Rim, etc., and have consistently seen 4G speeds above 10Mbps. Usually, it is closer to 15Mbps. There are some dead spots when data services drop out completely, but -- for the most part -- it is a strong and powerful signal.
Since I'm always quick to give Sprint (and other providers) grief when their service is lacking, I want to make sure I give them credit where credit is due. This phone and the new LTE network are super fast.
Thanks!
Aaron
p.s. I am puzzled by the CAPTCHA on this site. It took me several tries to post this message.

Thanks for the update. Out of curiosity, have you installed Sprint's OTA update to v LG8? It is supposed to include more "optimized" LTE connection software. The previous versions (LG2 and below) were believed to set the threshold for LTE signal strength too high, so it was difficult to get and keep an LTE connection. This would only magnify problems caused by the relatively thin tower coverage in newly launched LTE markets such as San Antonio, Houston, etc.
Just picked up the phone. I'm looking good on 4g at I10 and De Zavala

Hey san antonio peeps,
check this site out. More lte sites to be turned on by the end of august. maps show only new sites. and it shows how far behind some cities are in the lte roll out.
red means sites that are over due that have yet to be turned on. blue are sites that are to be turned on by end of august.
